The day I spoke to Priscilla Presley

f you’re one of the only people in Christchurch I haven’t told about my encounter with Priscilla Presley, let me fill you in. There is only one Priscilla Presley. She’s the only person alive who knows the real ‘behind closed doors’ story of life with Elvis, and on 19 November she’ll share that with a Christchurch audience. The burning question since has been, ‘What she was like?’ Priscilla was soft, considered and had a no-nonsense energy. Well media trained, naturally, yet the now 80-year-old shared an honest purpose to live the remainder of her life as free and peaceful as possible. She’s committed to upholding Elvis’ legacy, but built her own in the years that followed too. and full of character. The three-day event was a welcome first for our city. At the festival’s opening, New Zealand Fashion Week board director Liam Taylor, board member Murray Bevan, and ChristchurchNZ chief executive Ali Adams all shared their passion for filling fashion week’s gap on Canterbury’s calendar. During the Christchurch Spring Fashion Festival, which took place from 7 to 9 November (I could think of no better Cup Week prequel), the word ‘relatability’ came up a lot. The general feeling was that fashion should strive for a better embrace of diversity – from designer to model and sample size – and invite an inclusive approach to the entire industry. Consumers need to see themselves in what they see on the runway, the lookbook, the campaign. I really noticed a shift – not just in the conversations I was having with others, but in the response to the expressive, personality-driven dressing we were surrounded by – and I really hope it continues into Cup Week and beyond. Now if you’re searching for a further celebration of fabulously hard-working and talented women – think environmentalist and entreprenuer Brianne West or South Canterbury interiors icon Maree Hynes – you’ll find it in this issue. It’s forever Metropol’s goal to champion Canterbury’s ‘leading ladies’, but I feel this issue truly drives that home. Priscilla Presley grew into womanhood in isolation and restriction. On 19 November at the Isaac Theatre Royal, ‘An Evening with Priscilla Presley: Life After Elvis’ takes back control of her own narrative – a privilege she wasn’t often afforded during her time with the King of Rock and Roll. The resilient Ms Presley tells Metropol editor Nina Tucker why it’s time she shared her truth.

s I’m getting older, I figured I would rather tell my story than let somebody else,” Priscilla tells me over Zoom in early November. The actress, businesswoman and philanthropist will host an intimate storytelling and Q&A-style show in Christchurch – and she’s not afraid to answer questions with the truth. “If they [the audience] ask me a question that is completely offbeat… I’m going to say that isn’t true.” Long before and long after she took one of the most famous surnames in existence, Priscilla’s relationship with Elvis was the centre of celebrity gossip. From her years in the limelight to those spent in the shadow of his, Priscilla has faced questions and heard stories so “terrible” that telling her own has become the only way to preserve how their time together really was. response to those who just can’t accept “the fact that he married me, and we were very, very close,” she says. “It’s sad to me, because, first of all, I’m not going to even tend to that,” – but the fact that those myths are out there still hurts. Rumours swirl fifty years on from the finalisation of their divorce, even with each time she’s set the record straight. “Elvis and I had a really great, wonderful relationship even after we were married. There are a lot of people out there who don’t want to believe that.” In her memoir, Softly As I Leave You: Life After Elvis, which An Evening with Priscilla Presley: Life After Elvis dives into, Priscilla writes “I never regretted my decision to leave Elvis. But I never ceased to mourn it.” Among her greatest memories in her 80 years, Priscilla shares

her top three with me: welcoming her daughter Lisa Marie Presley, son Navarone Garibaldi Garcia with then-partner Marco Garibaldi, and her wonderful time with Elvis. “Having that relationship with him, and that trust with him,” she remembers. “Even though I left, you know, I’ve always loved him, and still do to this day, it’s just that I couldn’t take the lifestyle. I couldn’t take the women,” she says, gingerly. Clawing back at the life and years she lost once she moved into the Graceland mansion at 17, and the whirlwind three years prior so unconventional to a high-schooler after meeting Elvis, each rare story told is an opportunity to heal. “Talking to people, sharing my life,” is how she hopes to spend her years to come – a therapeutic gesture for a history so extraordinary. Priscilla had been probed to write another book, even have someone write it for her. That didn’t feel right, and she didn’t feel ready. Her lens is exclusive authority – it demanded deeper, more personal reflection and conversation – and you can be part of it. Priscilla reclaimed her identity when she left Elvis – becoming an actress and producer beloved for roles in the television series Dallas and The Naked Gun films, yet her lesser-known achievements recognise her great love for animals. A powerful activist and advocate, Priscilla has campaigned against animal cruelty and for their rights for decades, remaining involved with and supporting multiple organisations. “I’m such an animal lover,” she says. Her extensive reach and platform is helpful when advocating better standards and attending charity galas, however Priscilla exercises just as much dedication with no one watching. “If there’s an animal that needs help, I will call [the organisation] and they’ll come,” she says. “If I see a dog that needs help, or if there’s an owner that’s not treating the animal well, I’ll report it.” Priscilla has finally managed to live her life on her own accord. “I’m not pressured to do anything. It just feels great.” Her future is rich in days just as they are now, she tells me, the peaceful bliss of beautiful Los Angeles – with strictly no snow, unlike where she spent most of her childhood in Connecticut. An appreciation for her home, the LA lifestyle is one she loves, made better by being near her son Navarone. “I can’t complain.” For her years spent trapped and suffocated, and by her own account, being a “living doll” moulded to fit Elvis’ ideal image, it was a beautiful thing to hear her say that. “I am riddled with self-doubt, anxiety and neuroses of some description all the time. But I’m also quite determined, some people might call it unreasonable. I’m also not that fazed about failing, because what’s the worst that can happen? It’ll be embarrassing for a while. “I got very stressed in the last few years of Ethique. I ignored my physical health completely. Even though I’m probably busier now, I’m better at maintaining balance.” Much of the time, that balance looks like animals and rewilding. A few years ago, she bought a neglected lifestyle block in West Canterbury, “full of weed mat and dead plants”. “We’ve torn out the pine trees, planted native forest and built a dino dome for native lizards, and we’ve replaced the lawn with insect islands.” Her animal sanctuary is home to three horses (two terminally ill, enjoying peaceful retirements), rescued cows, Highland cows (“that weren’t rescued but I adore them, they’re like giant teddy bears”), goats, frogs, rescue chickens, two bearded dragons named Nessy and Ahi, and until recently, an arthritic family dog who passed away. “I’ll get another dog sometime this year.” The animal care is not just a lifestyle; it’s a grounding force. “Being outside with the animals is an enormous form of self-care. Just being able to go outside and hang out with the horses when they have a nap in the middle of the day. I can’t overstate how calming and relaxing that can be.” Aside from the animals, what else makes Brianne happy these days? We’re back to the squidillions, more precisely, giving them away. “I work with and donate to an awful lot of amazing charities. The money has given me the ability to support lots of causes that are under-supported. The environment gets just two per cent of philanthropic donations,” she says. “I don’t like talking about money. I’m uncomfortable, yet it’s proven in science that the number one thing that makes people feel better in a lasting way, that actually helps combat depression, is donating to charity. So it has enabled me to be happy in a different way.” So yes, the local girl done good continues to do good. Go her.

QUICKFIRE WITH BRIANNE Where would we find you on a Sunday morning? I’m so boring. I’ll be at my computer studying microplastics for uni. Your favourite exercise class? Pump! Love it. Although I have my own gym at home so I don’t go to classes so much anymore. What book are you reading right now? Science under Siege by Michael Mann & Peter Hotez. It’s a very interesting (and depressing) look at the anti-science movement and ways to combat it. What’s a habit you swear by? I’m trying to read at night instead of doomscrolling. I am trying very hard to make that a habit. And the days I do it, I’m better in the morning, so, yeah, put down the phone. One thing you wish more entrepreneurs understood? You don’t have to take all your advice you’re given, and a lot of advice you’re given is rubbish. Your go-to snack while working? Sea salt pea puffs by Serious Food Co.

of resilience At age 18, Jake Bailey was told he could be dead within two weeks from the fastest-growing cancer known to man. Days later, he delivered his end-of-year speech at Christchurch Boys’ High School. The video went viral. Today, at the 10-year anniversary of that watershed experience, he talks to Metropol deputy editor Tamara Pitelen about cancer, happiness, and the power of resilience.

one of us get out of life alive, so be gallant, be great, be gracious, be grateful for the opportunities you have.” So said Christchurch Boys’ High School head boy of 2015, Jake Bailey, in his end-of-year speech to classmates. After that speech, he went back to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMTU) at Christchurch Hospital and spent 52 days straight in an isolation room, to undergo chemotherapy treatment. That room was entirely sealed off from the world using an airlock and filtered air system. At just 18 years old, and a couple of days before that head boy speech, Jake had been diagnosed with stage four Burkitt nonHodgkin lymphoma. A fiercely aggressive cancer, doctors said that, without treatment, he would be dead within weeks. Jake was determined, though, to finish the year on his own terms. “I felt that I owed it to myself, and I owed it to the school to finish the year as strong as I’d tried to start,” he says, now, on the 10th anniversary of that life-changing period. What Jake didn’t know was that the school had filmed the prizegiving so he could watch it from his hospital bed if he wasn’t able to attend. But the internet had other ideas. “It exploded over the subsequent couple of days,” he says. It unlocked a huge amount of community support for which Jake feels incredibly grateful. “There was a genuine sort of interest and care in terms of what I was going through, and an extraordinary outpouring

of community support, which was really palpable and incredibly powerful. And that persisted throughout my treatment.” He became known as “that speech guy,” which came with a strange mix of national affection, media attention, and expectations he hadn’t asked for. “That was probably the biggest change after that video,” he says. “It was an indescribably unusual time overall, but that community support was so powerful.”

Speak easy

After being told he was in remission in January 2016, and on the back of his viral video, Jake was offered the opportunity to speak at a range of events for different organisations – Lions and Rotary clubs, schools, sports clubs, corporates, and sports teams. He also had a book published the following year, What Cancer Taught Me, which led to more speaking engagements. He didn’t set out to become a professional speaker, it just happened. “I took those opportunities and basically fell into public speaking. Things organically grew, and I ended up doing that for four years.” Over the next few years, he gave hundreds of presentations across New Zealand and overseas. Initially, they were mostly about his cancer journey and what it taught him – things like resilience, perspective, and, as he puts it, “how not to sweat the small stuff.” He avoids the term ‘motivational speaker’ like the plague. “I stay as far away from that term as I possibly can,” he laughs.

“You say ‘motivational speaker’ and people think of Tony Robbins jumping around on a stage. It’s not really me. “I came to see that my life after the cancer was a lot better than it had been beforehand, solely because of going through that experience. I was a happier, more grateful person,” he reflects. ‘It gave me a level of insight into myself and the world that I think otherwise would’ve taken me decades to develop – if at all.” However, he’s the first to state that cancer isn’t a gift. “I wouldn’t recommend it,” he deadpans, but he does believe the experience forced him to grow. “It’s not just about surviving,” he says. “It’s about taking those hard things and working out how they shape you.”

Beyond the ‘cancer kid’ story

Eventually, though, Jake began to feel boxed in by the cancer narrative. “I realised that the work had a finite lifespan,” he says. So he pivoted. He studied positive psychology, interviewed high performers, and started talking more broadly about resilience – in the workplace, in education, and in life. “I’ve had the privilege of working with over 100,000 people around the world, from an incredibly wide range of different backgrounds and countries and cultures and walks of life,” he says. “I’ve met a range of interesting, amazing people who have been through great challenges and overcome great adversity, and my focus became what makes people good at getting through challenges in life - evidence and research-based tools, skills and strategies for resilience.” Adversity, he says, is inevitable. Rough things will happen to every one of us. How we deal with adversity is key to our happiness. That’s something he learnt from his experience with cancer. “It forced me to develop resilience, and I’d taken those skills and tools and strategies, which I’ve learned from going through the cancer, and then applied them to everything from the car breaking down or having a fallout with someone, or not making a sports team that I’ve trialled for at school, or whatever it may be, and it just gave me the capacity to handle those challenges and pressures, which previously I had not done all that well at overcoming.”

The magic of resilience

Earlier this year, Jake released his second book The Comeback Code. It’s intended as a resilience guide for young adults – though he points out that it’s not just for teens. “My favourite review was, ‘I’m three times the age of the author and still came away from this book having learned some things.’” The book took four years from concept to publication, involved a publisher switch, and required a hefty rewrite. “It’s the book I wish I’d had growing up in New Zealand,” he says. “It’s evidence-based, it’s lived experience, it’s practical stuff.” He hopes it’s useful not just to those facing major adversity, but to anyone dealing with the ups and downs of daily life. After nearly a decade of speaking, Jake is stepping into a new chapter of life and a new role as General Manager of the Inspire Foundation, a Christchurch-based charity that identifies and invests in extraordinarily talented young people. “I’ve done 10 years of this work and I’m 28. I’m slightly restless and ready for a new challenge, and the work with Inspire is incredibly impactful and rewarding,” he says. “I think it’s the next mountain to climb.”

Namely, that resilience is the most critical factor for living a happy and successful life; and resilience can be learnt and strengthened. one big challenge and becoming overwhelmed by it. Instead, break the challenge into manageable chunks.”

• Salvage: “Deliberately seek out the good within the bad, no matter how creative you have to be.”

• Streamline: “Try to minimise and contain the everyday fears and anxieties that we all have.”

A spontaneous Christmas to remember Christmas 2018 was unforgettable. I told my husband to pack a 7kg bag – summer and winter clothes, plus his passport – without saying why. On Christmas morning we drove to Christchurch Airport with no tickets, destination, or plan beyond going somewhere. At the terminal I asked an airline staff member for any flight with two spare seats. “Where to?” she asked. “Anywhere – surprise us!” Six cancellations had opened on a flight to Singapore, arriving Christmas Day. Minutes later we’d booked, grabbed Singapore dollars, and boarded – adventure underway. We texted the kids, landed in a tropical wonderland, and wandered. Streets were wrapped in lights – magical. We sipped Singapore Slings atop Marina Bay Sands and explored for 10 days in cosy B&Bs. Spending time with family and friends over the holiday break is something I get really excited about. Family is very important to me. With my own two children, partner, mum, two sisters and their families, plus extended family all living in Christchurch, family dinners are a regular occurrence throughout the year, especially on birthdays! However, Christmas Day is the biggest one with over 20 people involved for lunch or dinner. After Christmas it’s a normal occurrence to pile over to the West Coast and attend the Race Day and spend quality time together for three or four days. With over nine years’ experience in Real Estate I am kept busy at work but do understand the importance of work life balance. Feeling nostalgic for a White Christmas! The highlight of Christmas for me now is having all my kids at home and being joined by extended family, relaxing and sitting around talking and drinking! Having grown up in the Northern Hemisphere and experiencing the magic of a White Christmas (their middle of winter), it just doesn’t feel the same and tends to turn into a big party instead. It’s still fun to create a summer party with loved ones, when the weather is lovely and we can enjoy al fresco on the BBQ – just a different way of celebrating! I might even be able to fit in brainstorming to find even more new ways to help my clients reach their home ownership goals in 2026. It’s amazing how creative I get when I’m totally relaxed with a drink in hand – watch this space.

At the end of a hectic year in real estate I love how Christmas is such an important thing for our large family when we all come together and celebrate! Summer is definitely my favourite time of year, so this is why I love the Christmas break so much. Socially, I hibernate in winter and come alive again in summer. After Christmas the fun times continue throughout the holiday season with time to connect and keep in touch with friends. Alfresco dining is my favourite – there is something about the good old Kiwi BBQ that I really love. Family, beach, sun, sand and a glass of wine and I am in my happy place. When it comes to Real Estate – I always get asked when the best time to sell is, my answer to that is always the perfect time to sell is when it is the best for the client, although with solicitors closed there is always a natural shutdown for over Christmas. How I love to spend Christmas I’ll be with my family – telling stories, sharing food, and laughing together. I’m lucky to have my Nana spend Christmas with us, and it’s a special time to catch up with my mum and sisters, who make the holidays shine. It means the world. ur Government is committed to providing improved social housing. That means building the right homes, in the right places, with the right support, for the people most in need. Having warm, dry homes helps keep families thriving at school and at work, so it’s vital we improve the housing situation. I recently joined Housing Minister Chris Bishop and Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger for the opening celebration of Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust’s new housing developments in Somerfield, which has 43 new, one-to-four-bedroom homes. When this project is completed, there will be 65 homes in total. Under this Government it wont stop there, with more than 65 new social homes on the way for Canterbury to be delivered by Community Housing Providers. Four of the homes have already been delivered by the Christchurch Methodist Mission, and over 60 others will be delivered from early 2026 by Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust, working in conjunction with construction partners of their choice. Importantly, more than 80 per cent of these homes will be one- and two-bedroom units. Half of those waiting for a home nationally need a one-bedroom property yet only 12% of Kainga Ora stock meets that need. These builds will help address the greatest gap in social housing supply in Canterbury. Throughout New Zealand, CHPs and Kāinga Ora have delivered over 6800 net new social homes since November 2023, with 837 of those places being in Canterbury. In addition to this, the Government has committed funding for more than 2000 additional homes to be delivered by CHPs over the next two years. We’re also simplifying the funding system so providers can get on with building homes, instead of navigating a confusing system and announced a new loan guarantee scheme, reducing borrowing costs for CHPs to help them deliver to more homes. The Government’s wider reset of the social housing system is already showing positive results. Recently, the Community Housing Funding Agency achieved an A+ credit rating from S&P Global. We’re focused on delivering homes that match the needs of people and communities.

Homegrown fashion Christchurch’s inaugural Spring Fashion Festival just wrapped. It wouldn’t be a fashion week without a trend report, writes Metropol editor Nina Tucker.

n its three days of glory, the festival uplevelled our city’s sartorial spirit. If not for the energised street style I witnessed on the ground, it left inspiration for the art of getting dressed in its wake. But the overarching theme? An unapologetic desire to dress with individuality, creativity, and a sense of personal conviction. Fashion’s true beauty is in the uniqueness of its wearer, and I felt both joyful and proud to find this resoundingly clear at every show. To a soundtrack that embodies how a sartorial summer should feel, models floated across the stage-turned-runway at Christchurch Town Hall’s James Hay theatre. Three days of shows, panel talks and styling sessions produced an event well overdue for our fashion-inclined community – attended by Christchurch’s finest fashion lovers, designers, sponsors and supporters. Online fashion retailer The Iconic marked its firstever runway presentation; designer Caitlin Crisp and beauty entrepreneur Mary Outram came together in ‘homegrown harmony’; Christchurch’s own Ladi6 shared her melancholic sound, and New Zealand Fashion Week creative director Dan Ahwa offered his artistic eye across the best of local fashion. Waves of polka dots ruled both the runway and the average festival-goer’s OOTD (outfit of the day, if you’re new here). What legendary designer Margarita Robertson offered in her signature gothic palette for the PLUME showcase, was balanced by the dress code of ticketholders for Caitlin Crisp’s resort ‘25 debut. Street style honoured Caitlin’s collection inspired by sunshine and the sea, while nodding too to Mary Outram’s butter yellow gradual tanning brand BONNIE, which added a glowing, golden layer of beauty to the runway.

At a recent Inspire Me Women breakfast - a fun morning of eggs Benedict, laughter and great discussion - we put a question to the group: Who is your hero?

eroes varied yet the theme remained – people who impacted our lives with unconditional love, who left their fingerprint on our soul, or who showed great leadership and compassion for people and the natural environment. One thing that resonated with me was the raw emotion of heroes lost. No matter how long ago that loss took place, grief can tiptoe into the room and take us unaware, and stay for lunch. It takes courage to sit with sorrow when it creeps up unexpectedly. I was humbled to share watering eyes with women reclaiming the richness of what was lost. Loss visits all of us at some time and it leaves an ache that’s hard to shake off. It’s painful and it’s proof of something meaningful; we can only mourn what truly mattered. Grief is not a weakness but a quiet honouring of who or what once filled us with love, purpose, or belonging. The deeper the love, the deeper the grief and therein lies the gift. So I think it’s not only ok, but absolutely essential, to say ‘I love you’ more often, open our arms wide to those who need it, live with more intention and let ourselves and others talk about the moments that mattered through tears or laughter. So you may be thinking… wow that’s a heavy start to the day, talking about loss. Let me tell you though, that I left that roundtable breakfast walking taller, with more purpose, and I swear I could feel my beautiful mother who I lost in my 30s walking right beside me smiling. She told me I’m doing just fine.

Biscoff bash

Biscoff seems to be the trend that won’t go away, so foodie and chef Cherie Metcalfe decided she may as well lean into it. This Biscoff mousse recipe from her latest cookbook Seasoned invites all the party energy in glassware to suit the season. INGREDIENTS • 315g white chocolate • 5 egg yolks • 100g Biscoff spread • 60g strong black coffee • 300ml cream • Lotus biscuits, to decorate

METHOD 1. Melt the white chocolate. 2. Whip the egg yolks and Biscoff together until light and fluffy (you should be able to see ribbons that slowly dissolve away). Then add the coffee. 3. Whip the cream to stiff peaks. 4. Stir the egg yolk mixture through the chocolate and then fold through the whipped cream lightly until it is a consistent colour. 5. Set in glasses or small bowls, and top with crumbled Lotus biscuits.

he beauty of platters is that they are fully customisable to you and your guests, there truly are no rules. This makes charcuterie or grazing boards the ideal way to accommodate dietary needs and groups big or small.

Warm weather and a drink and nibble in the sun. Bliss. A grazing platter, or charcuterie board, is the ideal appetiser for relaxing or entertaining. Here’s your guide to the perfect platter – the ﬁve key elements to effortlessly assemble and arrange yours.

1. Cheese: start with a variety of hard and soft cheeses to anchor your board. Include classics like brie, and make it interesting with cheese from different animals like goat’s milk feta.

2. Meat: next add cured meats. Think prosciutto, salami, smoky chorizo or pâté. Soft meats can be folded into ribbons or even crafted into a salami rose.

3. Sweet: add pops of colour and flavour with fresh and dried fruit. Fruit preserves, chocolate covered nuts, or even a piece of honeycomb are great additions.

4. Savoury: dips like basil pesto or a beetroot hummus

work a treat - literally. Consider adding other elements like nuts, stuffed olives or fresh vegetables including carrots, cucumber or celery.

5. Crunch: finally, fill any remaining gaps on your board

Top tips: • Adding small dishes like ramekins easily separates dips or condiments while giving your platter interest and structure. • Try cut fruit or arrange meat in a way that will be easy to pick up, or provide toothpicks. • Elevate your brie by drizzling with honey and baking for ten minutes, or until soft.

A hot, melty wheel of brie is one of those things that will always go down well. From the ‘Seasoned’ cookbook, this recipe takes literally zero effort and everyone always goes wild for it.

INGREDIENTS – Serves 4 | GF • 1 wheel brie of your choice • 70ml of your favourite honey and chilli sauce or Sweet Sesh Hot Honey by Pepper & Me.

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C fan bake. 2. Pop the brie in a small baking dish, or a mini cast iron pan. Ideally it’s nice and snug. Top with the hot honey and bang in the oven. 3. Bake for 10 minutes till melty and oozy. 4. Add a little more hot honey after baking if you like! 5. Serve it in the baking dish or pan you’ve cooked it in, with croutons or crackers, and a bunch of nice red grapes.

TOP TIP Walnuts and cranberries, pistachio and figs, and macadamias go well on top with the honey. Try any combo you like.

Rhubarb, raspberry & ginger

strudel braid

A beautifully braided pastry, bursting with tart rhubarb, juicy raspberries and warming ginger, all wrapped in golden puff pastry with a sweet almond crunch. From Nadia Lim’s latest book, it’s an eye-catching dessert or morning-tea treat that’s easier to make than it looks. SERVES 6 to 8 Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 35 minutes

INGREDIENTS • 400g rhubarb, trimmed and cut into 2.5cm pieces • 150g fresh raspberries (or frozen) • 4 to 5 Tbsp sugar, to taste • Zest of half a lemon • 1 tsp finely grated fresh ginger • 1 tsp cornflour (to soak up juices) •

1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• 1 large sheet puff pastry (about 2530cm wide x 35-40cm long), kept cold (Note: if you use the Paneton brand, it conveniently comes in this size). • 1 free-range egg • 1 Tbsp milk, for brushing • 1 to 2 Tbsp raw sugar, for sprinkling • Small handful sliced or slivered almonds, for topping

TO SERVE

• Ice cream, crème fraîche or yoghurt

METHOD

1. Preheat oven to 200°C. In a large bowl, gently toss together the rhubarb, raspberries, sugar, lemon zest, grated ginger, cornflour, cinnamon and a pinch of salt. 2. Lay the cold sheet of puff pastry on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Spoon the fruit mixture lengthwise down the centre of the pastry, leaving a 6 to 8cm gap at the top and bottom. 3. To braid the pastry, use a sharp knife to cut diagonal slits about 2.5cm apart on each side of the pastry, leaving a 1 to 2cm gap on either side of the filling. Starting at the top, fold the pastry strips over the filling, alternating sides to create a braid pattern. Gently stretch the strips as you braid and tuck the ends underneath to snuggly encase the filling. 4. Whisk together the egg and milk, then brush the braid with the egg wash. Sprinkle over raw sugar and sliced almonds. 5. Bake for 35 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crisp, and the filling is bubbling slightly at the seams. Allow to cool for at least 10–15 minutes before slicing. 6. Serve warm or at room temperature with a scoop of ice cream, a dollop of crème fraîche, or thick yoghurt for a real treat.

White Christmas slice We’ll all be dreaming of a white Christmas with this mouth-watering festive treat. INGREDIENTS • 500g quality white chocolate • 1 1/2 cups rice bubbles • 1/2 cup red glacé cherries • 1/2 cup dried apricots, quartered • 3/4 cup unsalted shelled pistachio nuts • 1/4 cup sultanas and/or golden raisins • 1 cup desiccated coconut

For the topping:

• 1 Tbsp red glacé cherries • 1 Tbsp pistachios

METHOD 1. Line a 20cm tin with baking paper. 2. To a large bowl, add the rice bubbles, glacé cherries, dried apricots, pistachio nuts, sultanas, raisins and coconut. Stir well to combine. 3. To melt the chocolate, place the pieces in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water. Stir with a metal spoon or spatula until the chocolate has almost melted. Remove from the heat - residual heat will melt the remaining chocolate. 4. Add the melted chocolate to the other ingredients and stir well to coat everything evenly in the chocolate. 5. Pour into the prepared tin and flatten down with a spatula or metal spoon. 6. Sprinkle with the cherries and pistachios and refrigerate for three hours, or until the mixture has set. 7. Once set, remove from the fridge, sit for 10 minutes before cutting into 16 squares.

Now a thriving design destination, Maree Hynes Interiors has come a long way from its beginnings in a mobile curtains van. The woman behind it all looks back on a 30-year South Canterbury legacy.

rom humble beginnings to building one of the South Island’s most admired interior design brands, Maree Hynes’ story is one of grit, grace, determination and perseverance. Growing up in South Canterbury, Maree’s life changed dramatically at just 14 when her father passed away suddenly. “Dad’s motto was just get on with it, so that’s what I did,” she says matter-of-factly. “You left school and got a job and got on with it.” With no qualifications but a fierce work ethic and natural creative flair, Maree began ticket writing and dressing windows at a local department store. She was soon promoted to be surrounded by fabrics, furniture, and colour, her love for interiors began to bloom. Inspired early on by her impeccably dressed mother, Maree says her eye for detail and beauty came naturally. “Mum was always well-dressed and well-groomed. I think that, along with my love of art and colour, really shaped me. I’ve always loved beautiful things.” It wasn’t long before word spread of Maree’s design talent. Encouraged by her husband, Michael, she launched Maree Hynes Interiors – from a mobile van, working from home. 64 November 13, 2025 Metropol

As her passion grew, so did her family. Maree juggled interior design work while raising young children. “I’d take my babies on client visits – three-year-old Ruby in one hand, baby Michael in a car seat,” she laughs. “Looking back, I honestly don’t know how I did it, but the clients loved it. Many are still friends to this day and remind me of these great memories.” The business started to take over their lives. “There were curtain samples on the kitchen table, and in every room of the house,” she recalls. “Constant phone calls, late nights quoting… Mick finally said, ‘This can’t go on. We need a showroom and you need staff.’ Taking a leap of faith, the couple purchased a property across from the Polytechnic on Theodosia Street in Timaru, renovated it and created an interiors showroom where Maree Hynes Interiors successfully traded for 18 years. After the earthquakes damaged their homestead and with their farm more than 30 kilometres from town, the couple decided to move closer to Timaru. Finding a property that suited both of their lifestyles wasn’t easy, until Maree discovered Harlau House saw it as an amazing project. With an old stables building that had been run as a café, it offered the perfect balance: Maree could have her art studio, and Mike could commute and still work the land.

Closing the café, however, sparked public outcry. “We didn’t set out to run a café,” Maree laughs, “but the community begged us not to close it. So we gave it a go.” Reopened as Harlau House Café, it quickly became a bustling local favourite restaurant and function complex hosting weddings, parties and conferences along with daily dining. An extension to the café was completed and extensive renovations to the homestead were undertaken. The recent development of the new design showroom at Harlau marks the next evolution of the Hynes legacy – a true

destination for South Canterbury. The space brings together interiors, art, homewares, dining, and inspiration all in one complex. “We wanted to create more than a showroom,” says Maree. “It’s about creating a lifestyle experience here in beautiful Timaru.” With both the café and design studio open seven days a week, slowing down has become a distant dream. On top of it all, Maree also hosts popular homestead/history garden tours, sharing her creativity and hospitality with visitors from across the region. Today, Maree leads a team of 30 talented staff, designing timeless spaces, delicious food and experiences for clients across New Zealand.

Putting Things into Perspective: The Art of the Annual Review It’s November as I pen this and we all know it’s not long till Christmas trees go up, carols feature on repeat in shopping malls and people turn their minds to the holidays ahead. But it’s also a time when our leadership team starts one of the year’s most vital processes; that being the task – and it’s often a big one – of reviewing… everything!! Put simply, we look at both the calendar and financial year, casting a discerning and curious eye over our journey. We measure our goals and intentions, and their achievement or otherwise, our timeframes and accountability, mindsets and wellbeing, for ourselves and our teams. It’s a big team and a big undertaking that takes time, perseverance and selfawareness, as well as considerable quantities of analytical data. Some people love data and are particularly good at analysing it, and I’ve been told on numerous occasions that ‘data doesn’t lie’, but neither do people's faces or

actions when they are travelling through a very difficult or successful period. I tend to focus on people first. It’s a value we hold ourselves to and focussing on this gives us the chance to see if the direction we’ve determined at the beginning of the year is resonating with the team we're leading and the clients we are representing. It allows us to consider what the next steps are because it’s easy to be different, but much more difficult to be better. So, how have we done? From a sales and recognition perspective, it’s been a strong year, reflecting the hard work of a world-class team and firstclass leadership. Our Papanui office has been recognised as the number-one residential office in New Zealand, as well as the number-one office internationally out of almost 900 offices for our brand, and the number-one big office across all brands in New Zealand. We also have the number-one franchise for productivity, which is measured in the industry as ‘income per sales consultant’ and I like to think it’s the sharing that occurs within the company that allows everyone to flourish, not just a few. All of this culminates in what I know to be true: 95% of success is hard work,

often it’s not much fun, it's hard and challenging but that creates growth, and that, after all, is the purpose of this annual review. How do we get better, growing our teams and our market share, whilst not losing touch with the people that matter the most to us? For me personally, I have the first anniversary of losing my mother coming up very shortly. That loss and my desire to live life with care and intention sit at the heart of my own personal review. Rake and weed:

Removing thatch (dead grass, dry vegetation and plant matter) and lifting weeds from your lawn gives space to encourage new grass growth, and fresh air to breathe.

Oxygenate:

Work with an aerating tool (available at most home improvement stores) to drive small holes in your lawn that assist in disrupting soil compaction and circulating air, water and other nutrients to penetrate the soil and reach grass roots. To a freshly watered and mown lawn, run the tool across the grass when it’s in a growing stage – its appearance will soon become more lush and green, with added disease resistance.

To reseed an established lawn, the best time is now – spring. Prepare your soil by de-thatching the lawn, raking, and aerating. Sprinkle fresh seed across before adding a light layer of soil, and running over it with a lawn roller. Water frequently until the grass grows steadily.

Water:

No one wants grass burn during a game of backyard cricket at Christmas because the grass is too dry. In spring, it’s recommended to water your lawn evenly every four to five days, and this time period narrows to around two or three days in the heat of summer.

ow often do you ask yourself if your cat is really your friend? Or argue with your family over who your cat adores most? In turn, we show affection to our cats in multiple ways – physical touch and petting, using toys to play with them, providing treats, and giving them a comfortable living environment. But how do they feel about this – and us?

Cats, much like children and dogs, use their human caregivers as a source of comfort and security, forming a strong bond. Mark says that our cats show their love through their ability to offer solace and their affectionate behaviours. Dog-gone it New rules for people with dogs across Christchurch and Banks Peninsula are now in force.

n 3 November, new rules about managing dogs in public spaces came into effect, following the Christchurch City Council’s public consultation over its dog bylaw and policy across 2024 and 2025. The Council’s animal management manager Lionel Bridger says a lot has changed over the past 10 years. “The rules have been tightened in some places to keep people, wildlife, stock, the environment, and dogs safe.” New areas that prohibit dogs or require leashes have emerged, as the Council focuses heavily on habitat restoration and wildlife protection. With more dogs than ever before, Lionel says that overall, the Christchurch and Banks Peninsula District is dog-friendly. “We have around 45,000 dogs registered to around 39,000 owners. Per capita, that’s about one dog for every nine people.” “That is why we rely on people knowing the rules and doing the right thing,” he says. In some parts of New Zealand, dogs must be leashed everywhere, except in specified off-leash areas. “We didn’t want to take this approach,” Lionel says. “We’d rather that restrictions are in place only where necessary, so that there are lots of opportunities for dogs to be exercised on and off-leash. An email outlining the rules was sent to registered dog owners, and information on the Council’s website was updated on 3 November 2025. New rules have been set for the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor (former residential red zone) and for Te Kuru Wetlands in

Halswell, aiming to balance wildlife protection and recreational access in these developing areas. A new rule bans dogs from Te Ihutai Avon Heathcote Estuary, including the beach around Southshore Spit Reserve and near Shag Rock. The rules have also changed at Styx Mill Conservation Reserve. “Some areas across the district are vital habitats where birds roost, rest, breed and/or feed, and dogs pose a significant threat to them. This is the case in estuary, wetland and riverbank environments, especially for ground-nesting birds,” Lionel says. “We’ve listened to community feedback that wildlife in these areas need protection from dogs – a lot of dog owners shared that sentiment.” A new rule states that dogs must be leashed on paths in green spaces such as parks, and limits the number of dogs a person can walk together in a public space – four dogs, with only two off-leash at a time in off-leash areas, including dog parks. Lionel says the Council is working on an exemption process for those with the skills required to exercise multiple dogs safely, for May 2026. “In the meantime, we’d like those people to follow all other rules, such as carrying a leash for each dog, picking up after their dogs, and following any leash requirements and prohibitions.” The Council is required by law to update its dog bylaw and policy at least every 10 years, meaning it is likely the rules in place now will remain until about 2035. Construction has started on the Canterbury Museum’s new basement and building.

arlier this month, an overnight concrete pour marked the official start of construction on the new base-isolated basement and building at the Canterbury Museum redevelopment site on Rolleston Avenue in central Christchurch. Leighs Construction contractors poured the first slab for the outer basement floor, about 13% of the total area. Several more large concrete pours will take place over the next two years to create both the outer and the inner basement floors. Museum tumuaki/director Anthony Wright, says he’s really pleased to be seeing the plans for the new basement and building become a reality. “But that’s nowhere near as exciting as the exhibitions and displays that museum staff are developing to fill the new structure. “Nearly half of the exhibition spaces are now progressing through various stages of design and three are ready to move into production. It’s a joy to see the new museum visitor experience take shape, and we’re looking forward to sharing that with visitors when we reopen in mid 2029.” Work on the new basement and building structure, to be built inside the outer basement now under construction, will start early next year and progressively expand across the site, with completion scheduled for early 2028. The next stage will be the fit-out of all the buildings, including the strengthened Mountfort buildings and the Gallery, followed by the installation of the new museum exhibitions and displays in early 2028.

Age-old problem Despite looking efficient on paper, New Zealand’s retirement housing is failing communities and seniors.

y grandmother is 86. She wants to live near her 30 grandchildren, her church, her doctor, and the familiar streets she has walked for decades. Yet finding an affordable, accessible home outside a retirement village proves nearly impossible. New Zealand has built a retirement housing system that looks efficient on paper but often fails in practice. Mono-tenure, age-segregated villages promise safety and convenience, yet often extract our seniors from the ordinary life of their neighbourhoods. The result is poorer social connection, higher long-term costs, and communities that lose elders as mentors, volunteers, and culture bearers. The research is consistent. Most seniors, like my grandmother, want to remain in familiar places when the right supports are available. Adapted homes, reliable transport, and responsive local services protect health and independence. Age segregation, by contrast, raises the risk of loneliness, which is strongly linked to worse health and lower life satisfaction. Intergenerational contact is a protective factor. When ages mix, both the young and the old benefit through shared purpose, informal care, and everyday reciprocity. The economics tell a similar story. Building and operating standalone villages is capital-intensive and locks care into fixed sites. As more people enter retirement without owning

homes, that model will only become less sustainable. By contrast, retrofitting existing homes for accessibility, funding in-home support, and strengthening neighbourhood services scale more efficiently because they build on what communities already have. A well-connected street with level entries, safe footpaths, and reliable transport serves everyone, not just one age group. The demographic wave is here, and finding a scalable, sustainable response has never been more urgent. There is a better path. Prioritise intergenerational, mixedtenure neighbourhoods where housing is adaptable, accessible, and close to daily needs. Use existing levers such as targeted home modifications, portable care packages, and incentives for age-friendly design. Align planning, transport, and health so people can stay local as needs change. Measure success by reductions in loneliness, avoidable hospitalisations, and carer stress, not only by units delivered or occupancy rates. This is not an argument against all retirement villages. It is an argument against letting a single product define ageing. Choice should include staying put with support, small co-housing, multi-generational options, and yes, high-quality villages where they are the right fit. Our parents and grandparents should not have to choose between safety and belonging. We can build communities where both are normal.

he spring selling season is well underway and Trade Me Property has seen a surge in new listings. In September, national listings were up close to six per cent year-on-year and nearly 19 per cent from August. We also saw property searches by prospective buyers skyrocket by more than 24 per cent compared to September 2024. This all suggests confidence is growing and Canterbury as a region is a standout performer. In September, the median days on site for properties across Canterbury decreased by six days compared to a year ago, sitting at an average of 51 days. That’s well ahead of the national average of 65 days. In terms of value, the average asking price in Canterbury is down -1.1 per cent year-on-year, but it did tick up between August and September, +1.1 per cent. Interestingly, the biggest increases in property prices across the year to September 2025 were Timaru, up +4.5 per cent, Ashburton, up +3.1 per cent and Waimakariri up +2.2 per cent. Keep it moving

A noisy garage door often signals dry rollers or hinges. Twice a year, give all moving parts a light coating of silicone-based lubricant (avoid WD-40, which attracts dust). While you’re there, tighten any loose bolts or screws – vibrations from daily use can cause them to shake free over time. But don’t overdo it. Tighten just enough to secure them to avoid stripping threads.

Clean and check

Dust and grit in the tracks can make the door struggle. Wipe them down with a damp cloth and mild detergent to keep things gliding effortlessly. Then test the auto-reverse safety feature: place a small object, such as a block of wood, under the door. If it doesn’t immediately reverse when closing, it’s time to call a technician.

Seal out the elements

Construction of the city’s new stadium remains on budget and on track to open in April 2026.

ith six months until the city’s new stadium opens its doors, the roof is finished, and the landscaping works are coming along in leaps and bounds. Christchurch City Council project director Kent Summerfield says the last section of roof has been installed, and the team is preparing for the next phase of landscaping. “With the planting, lighting, pathways, and exterior stairs well advanced, we’re ready to connect the grounds to the surrounding footpaths and complete the precinct. “To do this, we must first take down the perimeter fencing. Temporary fences will be placed in the road to allow our contractors to safely asphalt the footpaths and tie everything together.” Asphalting work has started on Barbadoes, Tuam and Madras Streets, and is expected to finish in December. Inside the stadium, the seating bowl is coming together. “The team has installed around 18 kilometres of railing for the 25,000 permanent seats. We’ve also got all the handrails and safety barriers in place,” says Kent. “Several large sections of seating have now been installed, and you can see the kowhaiwhai pattern starting to take shape.” For the field of play, the turf has been growing off-site since March and will be transported to the stadium and unrolled during the summer. Major works are on track to finish late this year. This includes the landscaping, seat installation, and fit-out of the stands. “Next year, the focus will shift to establishing the turf, testing and commissioning, and staff training,” says Kent. Timaru’s Kaitlyn ‘Tornado’ Tucker started Muay Thai kickboxing at 21 when she needed a new challenge. Success swiftly followed, yet after a bitter defeat for a world title earlier this year, Kaitlyn took a break from fighting to work on a new version of herself – and get married. On 6 December in Mount Maunganui, debuting her fresh fight name, Kaitlyn ‘Misfit’ Millington seeks redemption. Muay Thai, Kaitlyn says, is a martial art described as “the art of eight limbs” because each one can be used to strike your opponent. A lesser known sport in New Zealand, it’s full-contact combat that uses stand-up striking, sweeps, and various clinching techniques. People with a passion like Kaitlyn are changing that, introducing it to her community and educating on the benefits beyond a winning belt.

Muay Thai responded with vigor. “I felt a new found sense of confidence and purpose,” she says, reflecting on the early days. Now, the sport steals every spare moment and wraps around her entire life, from her personal career to helping build that of the students she coaches. The sport itself offers its own lessons. “It represents the core values of Thai people including discipline, honour, bravery, perseverance and respect.” For that, plus its habit-building qualities from fitness to friendship, learning how to eat better and now winning national and international titles, Kaitlyn thanks her 21-year-old self. “Muay Thai has shaped my life by teaching me resilience, discipline and self-belief. It’s given me confidence both inside and outside the gym, and that’s why I’m passionate about passing it on. I know first-hand how powerful it can be for someone’s growth.” “I do see it as much more than just a martial art. Being able to perform to the best of my ability and perform Muay Thai well is what I aim to do in my fights. But it’s not all about the results,” she says. In October, Kaitlyn travelled to Bangkok for a training camp at a gym known for producing worldclass fighters with authentic style. It was an opportunity to refocus and refresh ahead of her December duel against Australia’s Erin Carter. “This will be a cracker of a fight. The Aoraki Women’s Fund held its third annual Impact Event on the 23rd of October, at the Timaru Yacht Club, bringing together a vibrant crowd in celebration of collective giving and community empowerment. Organised by a dedicated committee — Erin McNaught, Paula McPherson, Roselyn Fauth, and Beth Park — the event marked a shift in approach. Rather than the traditional model of 100 women donating $100 to raise $10,000, this year’s event embraced inclusivity with $35 tickets and an open invitation for individuals and businesses to contribute what they could. The result? A resounding success, with the fund reaching its $10,000 goal, thanks in part to a generous $2500 contribution from major sponsor Raine & Horne. The funds were distributed to three impactful charities selected through a prior application process: • Pinc & Steel – $3750, supporting cancer rehabilitation • Thrive for Life – $3750, leadership experience for year 13 girls • Gloriavale Leavers Support Trust – $2500, helping women transition to freedom. Each organisation shared heartfelt stories on the night, highlighting how these grants would make a tangible difference in the lives of women and girls across the region. A standout moment of the evening was a lively Q&A session led by Jo Goodhew, featuring a panel of inspiring women: Aoraki Woman of the Year Roselyn Fauth, former Aoraki Foundation

trustee Jan Hide, and Roncalli Head Girl Maevi Fleming. Their conversation blended wisdom, humour, and heartfelt reflections on motherhood, leadership, and aspirations for the future – leaving the audience both entertained and inspired. Reflecting on the evening, Chairperson Erin McNaught shared, “We are incredibly grateful for the generosity and support shown by our community. It’s humbling to see so many people come together to make a real and immediate impact for women in our region.” Beyond the immediate impact of the grants, the Aoraki Women’s Fund is also working toward long-term change. Their endowment fund has quietly grown to $68,000, largely thanks to a committed group of 15 regular donors. The committee has set an ambitious yet achievable goal: to grow the fund to $500,000 over the next decade. At that point, it will sustainably distribute $20,000 annually to causes supporting women and girls, without needing to host fundraising events. Aoraki Foundation Chief Executive Richard Spackman acknowledged the team behind the event, saying, “The voluntary committee has done an outstanding job. Their energy, vision, and commitment made this evening a great success and continue to drive meaningful change for women in our community.” The evening was a celebration of generosity, vision, and community spirit – proof that when women come together, real change happens.

On the face of it, it sounds tempting. Slap ‘four bedrooms’ on the advertisement and hey presto – more rent, right? Well, not so fast. A cabin only counts if it’s fully lawful and compliant. That means it has to tick all the boring but essential boxes: built to the Building Code, insulated, ventilated, dry, safe exit, smoke alarm, the lot. If it doesn’t? Then the cabin isn’t a real bedroom. In fact, it’s not really anything from a tenancy point of view. You can’t legally include a cabin as part of the ‘habitable spaces’ of a rental at all – not a rumpus room, not a study, not even a place to stick the teenager. It’s just a shed with nicer curtains. So in this case, we had to burst the bubble and explain that unless the cabin passed muster, it was still a three bedroom property. Our advice to any landlord looking at a place with a ‘bonus’ cabin is simple: do your homework first. If the cabin stacks up, great – you’ve got an asset. If not, treat it like it’s not there.
