Older Americans Month: Communities of Strength
I
n these difficult times, communities find strength in each other, and people find strength within their communities. In the past year, in Marin, we’ve seen this time and again as friends, neighbors, and businesses found new ways to support each other. Volunteerism increased in many agencies, even with social distancing restrictions. In our community, older adults are a key source of our strength. Through their life experiences, successes, and difficulties, they have built

The Marin County Commission on Aging presents this special webinar designed to promote an understanding of Telehealth—the new normal—and what the County is doing to provide wider access throughout Marin. resilience to face new challenges. When we pull together, we tap into that collective strength. Each May, the Administration for Community Living leads the celebration of Older Americans Month (OAM). This year’s theme is Communities of Strength, recognizing the important role older adults play in fostering the connection and engagement that build strong, resilient communities. Vivalon lives this theme every year. Strength is built and shown not only by bold acts, but also small ones of day-to-day life. Working in the garden, checking in on a friend, testing out a new recipe to deliver to a disabled neighbor, or taking time to practice intentional breathing with your yoga practice. These activities help to center our hearts and minds. And when we share these activities with others—even virtually or by telling about the experience later—we help them build resilience too. This year, Vivalon will celebrate OAM by encouraging community members to share their experiences. Together, we can find strength—and create a stronger future. Here are some ways to share and connect: • Reach out to neighbors: Even if you can’t get together in person right now, you can still connect with your neighbors. Leave a small gift on their doorstep, offer to help with outdoor chores, or deliver a home cooked meal. • Try something new: Skill building comes in many ways. Learning something new allows us to practice meeting challenges and getting beyond them. Try a Zoom exercise class, or take an art course online. Vivalon has many classes to offer. Be sure to check our calendar of classes at vivalon.org/calendar/. Have a skill to share? Find an opportunity to teach someone, even casually. • Share your story: We are wired for stories and sharing your story can have a positive impact on others. This is also a fascinating time to interview family, friends, and neighbors about how they are experiencing the pandemic. When people of different ages, backgrounds, abilities, and talents share experiences—through action, story, or service—we help build strong communities. And that’s something to celebrate! Please join Vivalon in strengthening our community — check out our classes and activities, pages 5-8 or call today to volunteer 415-456-9062 or email volunteer@vivalon.org.

ay is Mental Health Awareness Month and practicing yoga benefits your physical and mental health. Yoga is the calming of the vacillations of the mind. Volunteer and Yoga Instructor, Kelly Lynch loves sharing yoga. She especially enjoys the sense of community she feels with older adults who come to the practice with a level of groundedness and a life experience level that means they are already well along the yoga path. Kelly said, “They want to move right into the benefits of what yoga can do to make them feel better. They really con-
nect to the deeper aspects of the practice very quickly. And it is a great community opportunity. To join a new community in your world who is interested in yoga.” She added, “If you go to a yoga class and you sit and you breathe for the duration of the class, you’ve had a huge success. It is all about the breath and you build from there.” Kelly believes that doing any amount of yoga is terrific. Consistency is good and asking for help is important and encouraged. Kelly even offers a private appointment to meet virtually with any student that needs

extra help. At 56, Kelly wants yoga to be part of her life for as long as she can. One of her teachers is in his 80’s so she hopes she’ll have 30 more years of practicing yoga. Starting the practice of yoga often makes it easier to realize that feeling better in one area makes you want to improve in other areas too, like eating healthier and practicing the quieting of the mind. Kelly has trained in 3 yoga disciplines, Restorative Yoga, Birkram and Bhakti. She explained, “I use a combination of these with my students. And I’ve improved my own practice during COVID. It’s fun to get better at something. At a time in our lives when some things may become more difficult, like running, learning a new practice that you can gradually get better at as you age is wonderful. I still work full-time in a field that is totally unrelated to yoga. I sell software and services to financial service firms. Doing yoga everyday has gotten me through COVID. So, for anyone hesitating, I’d recommend you just join us.” Call Vivalon Guest Services at 415-456-9062 or see page 5 for more information.

and are sometimes the loneliest among us. It also ignored the reality that older adults have so much to offer... Why would we be putting them in a box as only the recipients, rather than contributors in the Social Call experience?” Wade participated in a recent podcast entitled “Seniors and Loneliness” with Covia Social Call volunteer, Jeremy Warshaw (www. theconnectery.com/episode-4-seniors-and-loneliness/). Warshaw happily shared his views, “I really look forward to the calls. It’s never a burden or obligation. I’m not some savior coming in to save older people. I get as much out of it as I ever could have imagined. We talk freely... about everything from politics, to family, to fear of dying or books, whatever is on our minds. You get to look beyond... to the spirit of a person. You realize they can be and should be vital members of our society.” Wade added, “We started emphasizing the give and take in the relationship, we changed our training to reflect that, and we changed the language we use to describe the program, and we’ve seen the shift in the last couple of years where the relationships are so rich. 97% of our volunteers this year say they have developed a meaningful relationship as a result of the program and 93% said they feel
more socially connected. We have volunteers all over the world, so if someone is looking for an individual with a very similar world view or a completely different worldview, we can make a precise match.” For information on how to get involved in Social Call, please call Vivalon Guest Services at 415-456-9062.

hile we all know the very human experience of loneliness, chronic loneliness poses significant health issues, especially to older adults. Fortunately, the treatment for loneliness is a joyful one – quality social connection! A visiting program, where volunteers and older adults are thoughtfully matched for regular visits, works. The director of Covia’s Social Call program, Katie Wade, shares an uplifting view of how phone or video visits can be mutually beneficial, providing meaningful connection to both parties - a volunteer and older adult participant. “We’ve been running our program for 12 years,” Wade said. “It used to be in-person visiting and even pre-COVID, it grew to include phone calls. When COVID hit, we experienced a 100% growth in volunteer and participant interest. We’d already been unpacking the traditional model of a visiting program that felt really one-sided, where the focus was on the charitable listening from a volunteer. This model was lacking and came from a pretty ageist view, that the older adult was the one in need and the younger person was offering the service.” She continued, “That ignored the fact that younger people are also in need of meaningful connections
