Alpha Female You’re the willowy redhead I see all over Santana Row. The other night you were with your regular entourage, taking up space at the bar, squinting at your phones, none of you drinking, smiling, or even talking. Then some poor regular-looking guy had the temerity to approach you to introduce himself. You looked him up and down and then pretty much yelled at him in a voice that could cause paint to peel from the walls. You screamed at him to leave you alone because you were “tired of being bothered.” He had the good grace to smile as he backed off while everyone within earshot (which was EVERYONE in the bar) looked away awkwardly. The icing on the cake was the way you and your friends busted out laughing as the guy made his way to his group. Bravo!

Like a Modern Man

AN JOSE native Ryan Shelton’s wide-ranging résumé includes local institution Chez TJ, where he worked alongside chefs Christopher Kostow and Bruno Chemel. He followed Chemel when the chef opened Baumé four years ago in Palo Alto—he was chef de cuisine when Baumé received its second Michelin star in 2011. Shelton now serves as executive chef at the newly opened Mixx, a contemporary American restaurant in downtown Mountain View. He sat down with Metro to talk about his past and current work. WAS BAUMÉ YOUR INTRODUCTION TO MODERN COOKING TECHNIQUES SUCH AS MOLECULAR GASTRONOMY? Actually, I did a lot more molecular gastronomy at Chez TJ. [Bruno’s] style is actually very, very traditional. He and I just kind of played with all the molecular techniques and the different modern stuff people were doing and sort of developed a style together at Chez TJ. It’s kind of weird, because there it’s contemporary French, that’s what it says on the door. And Baumé was French cuisine moderne—we had never said molecular gastronomy. At Chez TJ, I would have dishes made of powders, and spheres and foams and stuff. At Baumé we would use one technique and people would be like, ‘This is insane—wild!’ So, we actually had to tone it down at Baumé. WHAT KIND OF MENU HAVE YOU PUT TOGETHER AT MIXX? We’re not doing fusion. Everything we’re doing, we’re trying to maintain the integrity of all the individual dishes. For example, I have an Indian dish where, basically, all the techniques that I use to create the dish would be used in an Indian restaurant. It’s made in the style of a skewered tandoori chicken and we do it with curried kale, rice and grilled bread. Something popular has been our pork belly steamed buns. The pork belly is braised really slow and then we sear it crispy and it’s stuffed into a steamed bun. The most popular is the chicken and waffles. We do a cornmeal waffle, the chicken is sous vide before it is battered and fried, so it’s actually really juicy and tender—I think that’s kind of the surprise element to the dish. ON THE SURFACE THE MENU LOOKS PRETTY CASUAL AMERICAN, BUT YOU’RE DOING A LOT OF MODERN COOKING TECHNIQUES FROM YOUR BACKGROUND, SUCH AS SOUS VIDE? Exactly! I heard one time, that the best technique is the one that you don’t see. So we use sous vide and we use a lot of that stuff in an attempt to create consistency and sort of ease for us in certain elements, so we can really focus on all those ﬁnal touches. ONG GONE are the $1 Thursday night well drinks, but the new iteration of 349 S. First St. offers a welcome boost to San Jose’s SoFA district.

Festival impresario Fil Maresca, who produces the SoFA Street Fair and other well known events, tells Metro that The Continental Bar, Lounge and Patio is yet another sign of SoFA’s resurgence. In the district’s earliest days, Maresca founded F/X The Club, which once occupied the theater on the corner of S. First and San Salvador streets. The Continental is the newest venture of Sam Ramirez, owner of The Cardiff Lounge and El Guapo’s in Campbell. It’s so new that last week it hosted Maresca’s annual F/X The Club Black Friday party, which featured four DJs spinning ’90s alternative and house music, as part of a “sneak preview.” The official opening is Wednesday, Dec. 10. “I’m really excited,” Maresca says, noting the successful launch of Café Stritch, the soon-to-be-completed South First Market and the enthusiasm for the rejuvenated SoFA Street Fair. “It’s becoming more of a community again. There’s a lot more people in the neighborhood who care about what’s happening.” Ramirez certainly falls into the category of people who care about the district, and the opening of The Continental represents a return to his roots. Born and raised in San Jose, Ramirez learned the ins and outs of the nightlife business working for Maresca at F/X, throwing parties at the Cactus Club and working at the Agenda Lounge. After cutting his teeth in the SoFA district, he opened Cardiff. “I feel like I’m coming back home,” he says. Ramirez has transformed the inside of what was once Brix and Hunters, and before that a pasta restaurant, Sal & Luigi’s. He went for a rustic look, using reclaimed wood, salvaged metal and exposed cement floors. The Continental will feature DJs spinning electronic music, including acid jazz and rare groove beats, much like the Cardiff’s programming. Ramirez also plans to occasionally host live music. Leather couches, arm chairs and a back patio area will give the spot a “lounge feel,” Ramirez says, while the bar menu will no longer be restricted to the stuff of bottom-shelf binging, but focus instead on craft cocktails. Ramirez says he plans to stock mostly high quality and small-batch spirits, micro-brew and craft beers, and fine wine—with a few exceptions: “I might do a Coors Light, or something like that,” he says. IRAN SO FAR AWAY Director Ana Lily Amirour puts a new spin on the vamp genre by setting her nightstalker in an Iranian ghost town.

Hijab of Horror EVEN IF YOU won’t see many movies as cool and beautiful as director Ana Lily Amirpour’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, it needs a little sifting to distinguish its accomplishments. It’s not the first time a Persian filmmaker, scripting in Farsi, has used the New World for a forbidden Iranian location; Silicon Valley’s own Mohammad Gorjestani re-created a modern Iranian roadside in British Columbia for his short “Sayeh” (The Shade). In Amirpour’s voluptuous re-creation of a half-empty oil town nicknamed “Bad City” (Taft and Bakersfield provide the desolation), this highly talented director/writer works in the trad of Von Sternberg’s Morocco and Welles’ Touch of Evil. She isn’t pioneering the black and white avant-garde vampire movie with allegorical heroin use. Almereyda’s Nadja and Abel Ferrara’s The Addiction—films made almost a generation ago—depicted the quest for numbness by those young and hurt by love. And this year Jim Jarmusch did his own avant-garde vamp film Only Lovers Left Alive. Jarmusch is likely an influence in one of Amirpour’s ideas—the way the show stops to listen to a vintage British tune “Death” by White Lies. The old song speaks, as it were, for a lovely female vampire of few words.

Here’s what is all Amirpour: the surprising vision to transform a hijab into a vampire’s cape when The Girl (the startlingly expressive Sheila Vand) goes on her rounds as parasite and avenger. Unique to Amirpour is the vision of The Girl commandeering a skateboard so she can glide just like Dracula, or to have her play an uncanny mirror game with A Girl Walks Home a passerby on an Alone at Night otherwise empty street. Amirpour also Unrated; 99 min. found Arash Marandi, Opens Fri. as Arash, a troubled young drug-dealer who charms The Girl. Marandi has a soulful comedic side to counteract the horror-show material—it’s a quality Brendan Fraser has when he’s at his best. Arash is suffering from family angst; mother (Mozhan Marno, recalling Melina Mercouri) is a witchy prostitute, his father (Marshall Manesh) is a junkie, and there’s something uncanny about the family cat, too. Amirpour’s taste also shows in hiring director of photography Lyle Vincent, equally superb at illuminating the blurry edges of the night, or in using a ﬁne enough grain to highlight the dust motes in a moribund man’s apartment. — Richard Von Busack

Old Soul FOR MANY TWENTYSOMETHINGS electronic dance music is the latest and greatest form of musical expression. Producers like Kaskade, Skrillex and Avicii pack festivals full of college-aged men and women with their high energy, synth-based beats. But for 24-year-old San Jose denizen Jackie Gage, horns, upright bass and analog, brush-beaten drum kits are where it’s at. Gage was born in Mountain View and raised in Sunnyvale by parents who loved soul and jazz. She grew up listening to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Dionne Warwick and Stevie Wonder.

For much of 2014, Gage served as the co-founder and host of Fatale, a weekly series spotlighting local female soul, R&B and jazz vocalists at Blackbird Tavern and the Pagoda Bamboo Lounge in downtown San Jose. A singer since childhood and a songwriter since college, Gage says that the women she saw singing at Fatale inspired her to write an entire album of original material and take her show on the road. Gage played the ﬁnal Fatale last week at Pagoda and then embarked on a short California tour, which took her to Oakland, San Rafael, Sacramento and down to Los Angeles, where she spoke with Metro on her cell phone about the upcoming release of two singles from her forthcoming LP, Ladies—named for the women singers who inspired her to take on this challenge in the ﬁrst place. “I really want as many ears as possible to hear this,” she says of Ladies, which she hopes to release in full some time in 2015. “I want the world to hear these stories and this music.” For those who want to hear Gage’s material sooner, she will be performing at City Lights Theater Company in San Jose on Sunday, Dec. 7. It’s the second-to-last show of her brief tour, which will wrap up with one more stop in Los Angeles on Dec. 9—the same day she’ll be releasing two singles from Ladies. Gage’s voice has been described as “velvety,” like a “smooth wine,” and indeed, her vocal ability is impressive, as she has shown in original songs like “Let Me Know,” a live version of which can be found on YouTube, and her jazzed-up cover of Rihanna’s hit “Umbrella.”— Nick Veronin
