most powerful limbs of the South Bay political machine. He worked as a communications director for the San Jose Police Officers Association (POA) from August 2010 to October 2013. In the spring of last year, Hillis also worked on the Chavez supervisor campaign, according to his LinkedIn profile. A year ago he left the POA to join Chavez full time at the county. He has been on

temporary leave from the county to help get Cortese elected. VINCE ROCHA, a spokesman for Cortese’s mayoral bid, told Metro that he was not aware if Hillis had any role in the campaign, but after that Rocha did not return multiple follow-up requests for clarification. Chavez’ office also did not return a call requesting comment on Hillis and his involvement in the site. This isn’t the first time an operative for Chavez, formerly CEO of the South Bay Labor Council, used

an anonymous website to attack political opponents and journalists. In 2009, Metro’s political blog, San Jose Inside, reported that PHILIP BUMP, a former political director for the SBLC, was an administrator for the site San Jose Revealed, which published particularly vicious attacks, including maps to the home addresses of prosecutor DAVID PANDORI and the owner of San Jose Inside. After the map was published in the latter story, San Jose Inside reported, “the

home’s owner, falsely accused of making money through pornography, became the victim of a hate crime that involved property destruction and swastika graffiti.” The Fetch has not published information as brazen as Revealed, instead focusing on links to articles and public documents. But the rhetoric of the site did take a more poisonous tone as Election Day nears, at one point comparing a local journalist to Nazi propaganda minister JOSEPH GOEBBELS.—Josh Koehn

ARLIER THIS YEAR, Jay Essadki stumbled across an old juicer and cassette tapes from a health guru while cleaning out a neighbor’s garage. A convert to the juice movement, Essadki wants to introduce customers to its numerous health benefits with his new juice bar and health food shop, The Liquid Menu, which opened last month in Mountain View. He sat down with Metro to discuss his new venture.

HOW DID THE LIQUID MENU COME ABOUT? I’m helping a neighbor clean up her garage and she hands me this juicer box with these tapes from the ‘80s by Jay Kordich. One morning I put the tape into my car and started listening and he was really passionate about juicing. In March, I didn’t even know it had become such a movement. For me this wasn’t going to be some juice bar, it was going to be The Liquid Menu. HOW IS THE MENU ARRANGED AT THE LIQUID MENU? The first thing we tell people is that we don’t mix fruit and vegetable juices. We break our menu into two sides: fruits and vegetables. Fruit juices are rapidly absorbed and are the energizers and cleansers for the body. The Vegetables are to build and repair. Different vegetables have different vitamins and will go in certain organs, in the right combinations. And as a chef this is exciting, it’s almost like magic formulas, very educated and purposeful recipes. WHAT IS THE HEALTH BENEFIT OF JUICING COMPARED TO JUST INCORPORATING MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES INTO YOUR DIET? All of the nutrients are in the juice. Take one of our drinks for example, it may have a pound of carrots, another half pound of apples—you have all of that nutrition in a glass. [Comparatively], how long would that take to not only eat those raw ingredients, but then digest and have your body absorb those nutrients? WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR CUSTOMERS TO EXPERIENCE FROM THE LIQUID MENU? You can be “full” as in your stomach has expanded and can no longer eat, or you can be full in the sense that you have nourished your body with necessary nutrients. If you get genuinely fresh extracted juice with the right superfoods, your body can get all the nutritional value that is needed. I’m a chef, of course I understand the pleasures of a nice meal. It’s all about balance. Any addition of fresh vegetables into your daily diet will benefit you. You’re not going to get everyone to start eating organic broccoli. Let’s start by taking out the bad and simply putting in the good. I’d rather you have like two pounds of inorganic carrot juice over a cheeseburger, right? OOD TRUCKS, since they burst into popularity these past few years, have become known for their crossover cuisine. Sushi tacos, Korean burritos and Filipino sisig nachos make exotic dishes palatable to the diverse crowds that flock to mobile street food events hosted by Silicon Valley’s food truck scene.

For the new Night Market, a weekly food truck festival that launches this Friday at DeAnza College in Cupertino, impresario Ryan Sebastian wanted to highlight authentic dishes. “Very different from what people have come to expect from a food truck,” the founder of Moveable Feast says of the roving food truck band. “Back to their roots.” Eight trucks will camp out for the evening, including favorites such as Curry Up Now (Indian), Eat on Monday (burgers), Formosa Streets (Chinese), KoJa Kitchen (Asian fusion), Mama Liu (Taiwanese), Taiwanese Street Food (Taiwanese, obviously) and Sip of the World (pearl tea). Peter Chung, a San Jose-native and singer-songwriter, will entertain diners. Thanks to an agreement Moveable Feast reached with the DeAnza College Board of Trustees, parking and admission is free and the event will continue every week for at least a year. The second Night Market event, Nov. 14, will double as a book launch for Food Truck Road Trip. South Bay writers Kim Pham and Philip Shen, the folks behind food blog BehindTheFoodCarts.com, hit the road to highlight some of the nation’s most creative food trucks and compiled some of their favorite recipes and photos into their inaugural volume. The book, released by Page Street Publishing, features several trucks from the Bay Area, including: 333 Truck, Doc’s of the Bay, Eat Fuki, Garden Creamery, Hill Country Barbecue, JapaCurry, Melts My Heart, Sam’s ChowderMobile, Waffle Amore and WhipOut! THE WORLD IS an indifferent place governed by the chaotic whims of nature. Humanity’s feeble attempts to corral these inexorable forces are futile and ultimately resolve in destruction and decay. And David Kimball Anderson is just fine with that. In fact, the Santa Cruz-based artist finds it all quite beautiful. Anderson is interested in classical beauty—in balance and contemplation. He looks for elegant forms out there in the world, in places overlooked or too familiar to be bothered with. In Ranchland, his show that just closed in San Francisco, Kimball photographed pieces of utilitarian ranch equipment, then rebuilt them, highlighting the humble grace of rusted troughs and cisterns.

Given Anderson’s penchant for finding the aesthetic appeal in ruins, it is appropriate that his new show, currently on display at the Art Museum of Los Gatos, is directly linked to a destructive event. The Manresa Seasons came about after a July fire ripped through the two-star Michelin rated Manresa restaurant in Los Gatos. At the request of Manresa owner David Kinch, Anderson had been installing a new still life sculpture at the beginning of each season, and now these seasonal sculptures and other bronze still lifes have found a home at the Art Museum of Los Gatos. These sculptures, unlike some of Anderson’s others, aren't meant to contain a narrative. Rather, he says, they're "a realist or representational image that's meant to evoke feeling." The still lifes depict delicate twigs, leaves and flowers contrasted with the heavy pots and bottles from which they emerge—new life springing from forgotten, man-made objects. Considering that the works on display aren’t meant to convey a narrative, it makes sense that Anderson might bristle at any of the pieces in The Manresa Seasons being described in narrative terms. And so, when the museum’s executive director suggested one recent afternoon that one of Anderson’s new still lifes might be called a “transition piece,” the artist replied brusquely. “I don’t do transition,” Anderson says. “What I do is I do whatever the fuck I wanna do.” He went on to explain that, much like the forces governing the natural world his work is “all over the map. I’ll shift gears and do a piece about astronomy tomorrow and I'll do a piece about landscape the following day and then I'll do a series of watercolors about energetic fields in the body the next day." And yet, while Anderson’s work mirrors the chaos of the wild, his art is not without purpose. "If someone were to say 'What do you do?' or 'Why are you doing this?' I would say I hope I am offering others the opportunity to deepen their lives,” he says.— Stephen Layton

Licks and Laughs COMEDIAN PHIL JOHNSON never expected to earn a living making people laugh. As an established guitarist with a degree in music, he had a very different vision of the path his career would take. “I had rockstar dreams like anybody else”, Johnson says. He inadvertently stumbled into comedy songwriting when he penned a couple of humorous tunes for some friends, and was surprised at their reactions. His pals not only enjoyed the songs—they suggested he make a career out of his jokester jams. “I was like, ‘No, no, no. It’s just a garbage song,’” recalls Johnson, who grew up in the Berryessa area of San Jose and now calls Milpitas home. But his friends persisted and he ultimately gave in. After drawing big laughs from crowds in San Francisco and elsewhere, Johnson realized he had found his calling. “It just kind of snowballed from there.”

Ten years later, Johnson is an established comic/musician with a resume that boasts two comedy specials and performances at such notable festivals as the Sundance Film Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. Now he is in final preparations for his third full-length comedy special, which will be filmed Nov. 8 at Art Boutiki in downtown San Jose. “I’ve been working on this [show] for about four years now.” Johnson says. He had originally planned to do it two years ago, but realized he wasn't happy with the material, and spent two more years polishing the set. While most comedians do straight stand-up or comedy music exclusively, Johnson’s act is a hybrid of the two, with about a third of his stage time devoted to just telling jokes. His act ranges from silliness to satire, and most of it is rather upbeat. “My comedy isn't too dark, because I’m a pretty happy person to begin with,” Johnson says. “But there is a little bit of social satire. I’m big on self awareness.” And though people will come up to him after shows thanking Johnson for his refreshingly clean humor, that isn't to say he pulls any punches—there are plenty of sexual references and four-letter words in his act to keep Johnson from the “squeaky-clean comic” classification. "Somehow I manage to do a lot of that stuff without coming off as a blue comic,” he says.—Tad Malone

But I was thinking that when the server waits for a while at our table, he may feel we don’t respect his time, and other customers may feel neglected and leave him a crappy tip.” By asking her to sympathize with the waiter instead of telling her what a jerk she’s been, you help her stay cool enough in the head to consider potential solutions—like doing a little online menu recon before hitting the restaurant. If you both start sending criticisms up for processing to the kindness and tact department, you could get in the habit of “accepting influence” from each other—listening to each other and becoming better individually and together—a practice marriage researcher John Gottman sees in the happiest, most stable relationships. Think of this as living the dream—the one where your relationship is a safe place to expose the real you (as opposed to that dream where you’re back in 10th grade standing naked in front of the school assembly just as your mom starts reading your diary over the PA).

I try to be direct, but my girlfriend often sees this as meanness. For example, when we’re out to dinner, she sometimes takes forever to order when the server is standing right there. I’ll call her out on this—tell her she was rude to keep the guy waiting. Personally, I think it’s unhealthy in the long run to keep quiet about issues, but my girlfriend gets upset whenever I give her constructive criticism. How can I convince her that she’s being too sensitive? --Honest There are times when directness is best. Like if you’re an air traffic controller. What’s important is not that you make the pilot feel supported in his life goals but that he brings the plane to a stop on the runway instead of in some lady’s pool. But, in many non-emergency situations, being direct—like bluntly criticizing someone—is about as effective as throwing somebody a fruit basket instead of a life preserver when they’re drowning. The problem, as I explain in Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck, is that “criticizing people doesn’t make them change; it makes them want to clobber you.” Because of a lack of software updates to our body’s ancient fight-or-flight system, we respond to a verbal attack with the same supercharged biochemical ammo we would if we were attacked by some sharp-fanged thing looking to turn our left eyeball into an after-dinner mint. You are right, by the way; your restaurant table shouldn’t start to seem like a bus stop for the waitstaff because your girlfriend’s applying Bayes’ theorem to whether she’d prefer the chicken to the pasta. But is your ultimate goal hammering her with how right you are or having a relationship? If it’s a relationship you’re after, you need to keep her fightor-flight defensiveness from whirring into
