It’s hard to believe that the Michelin Guide—something of a bucket list for lovers of fine dining—began in 1900 as a simple tour book for motorists. Since 1926, the Michelin Guide has given star ratings to restaurants and hotels, bestowing one, two or three stars upon establishments deemed by its reviewers as “very good,” “excellent” or “exceptional.” It wasn’t until 2005 that the iconic French handbook made the jump across the pond, first publishing a guide to New York City restaurants and then adding the Chicago and San Francisco metropolitan areas to its list of annually published guides. This year’s Michelin Guide: San Francisco Bay Area & Wine Country covers 540 restaurants and hotels. Here’s a look at the South Bay and Peninsula establishments that made the cut in the one and two-star categories. (Perhaps next year we’ll see some of these rise up and join The French Laundry and The Restaurant at Meadowood in the crème de la crème three-star club?)
Two Stars
Palo Alto’s BAUMÉ offers an intimate dining experience and emphasizes local ingredients. With just 25 seats and a small back-of-house team headed by chef Bruno Chemel, Baumé serves an ever-changing tasting menu using seasonal ingredients. Despite dabbling in molecular gastronomy in the past, Chemel has recently expressed his desire to return to the more traditional methods he used as a chef working in France Taking the farm-to-table concept to the next level, chef David Kinch of Los Gatos’ MANRESA has maintained a partnership with Love Apple Farms in the Santa Cruz Mountains since 2006. Supplying organic, biodynamic produce to the restaurant, Love Apple Farms also receives all the compost from the kitchen, thus forming a neat sustainable food chain. Manresa recently published Kinch’s much-anticipated first cookbook, Manresa: An Edible Reflection, which makes plain this region’s importance in shaping the restaurant’s cuisine.

Just into its third year, husband-and-wife-run ALL SPICE in San Mateo is a departure from the French-fusion approach. Chef Sachin Chopra draws upon various ethnic cuisines—notably Indian, Japanese and Mediterranean—to create dishes such as chicken confit kebabs or spinach-parmesan custard served with grilled paneer, and a bit of humor, too: it’s named “Popeye’s Dream.” Located in a historic home in Mountain View, CHEZ TJ recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. Presiding over the kitchen is chef Jarad Gallagher, whose training abroad at Le Cordon Bleu supports Chez TJ’s contemporary French philosophy. The restaurant has launched the careers of many celebrated Bay Area chefs. including the aforementioned Chemel, Joshua Skenes of Saison and Christopher Kostow of The Restaurant at Meadowood. A Bay Area native, executive chef Peter Rudolph of MADERA at the Rosewood Sand Hill in Menlo Park preserves the culinary traditions of the region with locally harvested produce and sustainably harvested seafood and meats, and a kitchen centered on a wood-fire grill. Also popular is the bar and lounge, a hotspot for the venture capitalist and Silicon Valley set. At Saratoga’s Plumed Horse chef Peter Armellino serves California cuisine that draws on local produce and seafood, with some choice imported ingredients. Since a major remodel in 2008, the sleek Old-World-meetscontemporary-aesthetic matches the refined character of the food. At WAKURIYA in San Mateo, contemporary Japanese cuisine by chef Katsuhiro Yamasaki creates a prix-fixe menu of nine dishes that incorporate seafood, poultry, meats and seasonal vegetables. HALLOWEEN IS just one day a year, but South First Fridays offers a sort of trick-or-treating every month. The gallery walk encourages visitors to go doorto-door in the SoFA district and other downtown neighborhoods, where the treats at local galleries, shops and restaurants include art shows, receptions and art activities.
‘Fall’ with Grace
This month South First Fridays follows up Halloween a day later on Nov 1. Here’s a small sampling of shows and activities going on around downtown. The full list of participating spots is available at southfirstfridays.com ANNO DOMINI, 366 S. FIRST ST. This gallery, operated by the founders of South First Fridays, opens “The Wind Whips the Palm Fronds,” an exhibition of colorful, detailed new works by Megan Diddie. Also continuing: “Suicide,” mixedmedia pieces by Barron Storey that explore the motivations of those who kill themselves—and delve into the emotions of those they leave behind. ART ARK, 1035 S. SIXTH ST. It’s not strictly walking distance from many other SFF participants, but the Art Ark offers some real bang for the buck of going just a bit outside of downtown proper: “The More the Merrier IV” is an exhibition and art sale showcasing the works of 51 local artists. And it promises to offer a lot of art per square inch: artists have been encouraged to pack as many of their pieces as they can into their given spaces. If may be a bit crowded, but it certainly won’t be gauche—the event is styled after a French salon, where it’s all about meeting the artists and discussing their works. KALEID GALLERY, 88 S. FOURTH ST. Longtime local artist Al Preciado teams with Andre Hart for “Flowers,” an exhibition that includes paintings that the duo created collaboratively. The exhibition plays on contrasts, including the generation gap between the two artists (one a Baby Boomer, the other Gen Y) and the push and pull between creation and destruction, and chaos and control. TECH SHOP, 300 S. SECOND ST. Bay Area artist and designer Eleanor Lawson has cred as a comic book production designer and a degree in the industrial arts. Her exhibition at Tech Shop includes pieces she’s created using Computer Assisted Design and a 3D printer, as well as interactive sculpture. DISCOVER SAN JOSE, 150 S. FIRST ST. This boutique celebrating all things San Jose opened over the summer. True to its mission, Discover San Jose offers an interactive talk on art for this art walk. The shop invites visitors to help create a community art piece, keeping in mind the theme “San Jose: Wish You Were Here”—what makes San Jose special to them. (Is that also a personal message to the Stanley Cup? Or is that “you will be here”?) —Heather Zimmerman
A COUPLE divided by faith and separated by a deadly accident is the basis for Next Fall, the topical drama by Geoffrey Nauffts that was wellreceived on Broadway a few years ago. Though it never quite merits the praise lavished upon its initial runs, the skillfully staged Bay Area premiere at San Jose Rep, directed by Kirsten Brandt, is nonetheless something to behold. Next Fall The first act gets off to a shaky start, but it doesn’t take long for the play to build momentum as the Thru Nov 10 friends and family of injured, unconscious Luke Tickets $10-$69 (Adam Shonkwiler) begin assembling in a hospital waiting room. Chief among them is Luke’s partner San Jose Rep, Adam (Danny Scheie, best known for his work with 101 Paseo de San Shakespeare Santa Cruz). Shifting between this Antonio, San Jose. setting and flashbacks, we see the conflicted romance 408.367.7255 and between the two men: Adam is an atheist—also out sjrep.com. and proud—while Luke is a devout Christian who isn’t quite so out. Luke’s Christianity isn’t the feel-good kind either; he believes that Adam is destined for hell, not for being gay, but rather for his failure to accept Jesus as his savior. Luke isn’t out to his parents, which leads to some interesting situations: these can be humorous, like the awkward exchange between Adam and Luke’s visiting father (James Carpenter) in a hastily “de-gayed” apartment. They can also be heartbreaking, as when Adam is barred from visiting his ailing partner in the hospital. Some critics have objected to this latter device, pointing out that most of today’s hospitals recognize the visitation rights of same-sex couples. However, in light of still-pervasive homophobia, it seems naïve to think that discrimination never occurs in this regard. Rounding out the cast are Lindsey Gates as Holly, one half of a Will and Grace-style relationship with Adam, Ryan Tasker as one of Luke’s fellow gay Christians and the delightful Rachel Harker as Luke’s mother. The cast does great things with characters that could easily have been mere stock types (the closeted conservative gay, the urban neurotic), and it is no overstatement to call them superb. Even Luke’s conservative hard-ass father receives a strikingly human portrayal by Carpenter, and Scheie can coax big laughs out of quips which, coming from a lesser actor, would barely provoke a weak grin.—Sean Conwell

Horror Film THERE’LL BE two kinds of viewers of 12 Years a Slave: the many who didn’t realize American slavery was so terrible; the few (like Henry Louis Gates, Jr.) who’ll point out that what went on was far worse than what we see here. Director Steve McQueen’s third and best film sources a real-life narrative, a best-seller of the 1850s. A free man of New York named Solomon Northrup was knocked out with a Mickey Finn and shanghaied to New Orleans, where he was sold. During his enslavement, Northrup was traded back and forth among cotton, pine and sugar planters. Some masters were relatively civilized (Benedict Cumberbatch plays one). Others were corroded utterly by what slave-mastering does to a person. As Master Epps, one of the latter, Michael Fassbender embodies a soul caught in a chasm of evil: sadistic yet silly with his selective religion. There are times when watching this monster—a palsy arm around his tormented slave, his sleeve-covered other hand concealing a knife—that it becomes clear why actors often end up with troubled lives: How could you give yourself up to be a sounding board for these kind of figures, and come back from it whole? The movie is alive with knockout character acting, including a psycho
overseer (Paul Dano), Epps’ deadeyed, vicious wife (Sarah Paulson) and Brad Pitt in a graceful, onescene role as a self-amused Canadian carpenter. Star Chiwetel Ejiofor’s moral firmness, compassion and natural nobility is perfect for conveying what the institution did to the people it devoured. The Shakesperean in Ejiofor is easy with the dialogue of another era; the 12 Years a Slave painter in McQueen is expert with visualizing R; 133 min. the ordeal, as when the extinguishing of Opens Fri. hope is visualized by the golden embers of a slowly dying fire yielding to total blackout. Great moments exist in Amistad—Morgan Freeman, examining the interior of a slave ship, getting tangled in the hanging chains, like a man fighting cobwebs. 12 Years a Slave is a far better film, focusing on the traumatized witnesses. It’s a timely movie—even today, revisionists are trying to rewrite these horrors. Such liars are accessories after the fact to our national shame, and they’re fools denying that the stench of what our forefathers did doesn’t linger in the air of 2013 America. —Richard von Busack

PROBABLY THE ONLY PERSON who would think that Lou Reed dying is funny would be Lou Reed himself. Best known for fairly humorless songs about mainlining heroin and shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather, the guy had a wicked wit. I interviewed him only once, but it was just as strange and hilarious as his appearance in Blue in the Face would make you think. He had one of the biggest personalities rock music has ever seen, and while he usually took a more writerly approach to his songs, the one place he could always be counted on to let loose was in his live shows. This is why I always made a point of seeking out Lou Reed bootlegs in college, because his live records were priceless—you never knew what he might do. Thankfully, there are several legit live albums that showcase how he brought his weirdness straight to the people—often pulling off versions of his songs that were far better than the studio recordings. Here are my personal favorites, in order of preference: TAKE NO PRISONERS (1978): This double album is hands-down the most entertaining live record you will ever hear. It’s actually more of a stand-up album than anything else—he can barely get through three chords at a time without going off on some ridiculously awesome tangent. He tells Village Voice critic Robert Christgau to fuck off, responds to people who ask him if his music is political (“gimme an issue and I’ll give you a tissue”) and in general gives his take on everything. He once suggested that he should have called the album Lou Reed Talks – and Talks and Talks and Talks. Totally. ANIMAL SERENADE (2004): You can argue with some of the set selections, but you have to agree that this last, heavily orchestrated Reed live album features some of his most gorgeous live versions. Even classics like “Street Hassle” and “Dirty Blvd” are better here than on his studio releases. 1969: THE VELVET UNDERGROUND LIVE (1974): Absolutely essential for VU fans, this long-after-the-fact live release features the slow version of “Sweet Jane” that most people only know from the Cowboy Junkies cover, and a totally different “New Age,” too. ROCK ‘N’ ROLL ANIMAL (1974): This was Reed’s Guitar Hero record, and while that may annoy some fans, anyone who dug Cheap Trick’s Live at Budokan (or hell, Ted Nugent’s Double Live Gonzo!) will appreciate Lou in epic arena mode. Also captures possibly the best live version of “Sweet Jane” he ever performed. —Steve Palopoli

Every so often the world presents us with little IQ tests revealing our ability to think rationally in the face of ideology, emotion, and other distractions. Now the test case is energy. One wants to be optimistic, but dolphins, take note: there’s a chance that spot as Earth’s intelligent apex predator may soon open up. Background: Most oil and gas extracted till now has been found in porous rock, which allows for relatively easy harvesting. However, large reservoirs of petrochemicals remain behind, trapped in rock as impermeable as brick or concrete. Several technologies have been developed to get at these “tight and unconventional” reserves. The first is directional drilling, in which you start drilling a well vertically, then turn the bit horizontal and bore sideways to free gas and oil that are difficult to reach from directly overhead. The second is rock fracturing, which breaks up rock to allow trapped oil and gas to escape. The current method, using hydraulic fluid under high pressure, is more efficient. That’s fracking. Fracking has its problematic aspects. Among them: Toxic chemicals. Fracking fluid is mostly water plus fine sand, but also may contain various friction reducers, disinfectants, surfactants, acids, and corrosion preventers. Some of these chemicals, such as benzene, are carcinogenic, some are otherwise harmful to people or the environment. Water consumption. An analysis of 15,000 fracking wells in the Barnett Shale region of Texas found they consume about a tenth as much water as Dallas. Overall, fracking consumes less than 1 percent of Texas pumpage, but the southwest has limited water resources— things could get pretty dry. Contamination. Some injected water returns to the surface, carrying with it brine and other pollutants that could leak into aquifers and water wells. A possible related problem is methane migrating into places where it shouldn’t, giving rise to such disquieting phenomena (check out YouTube) as flammable tap water.

Earthquakes. Some claim fracking sites are prone to them; others scoff. I don’t dismiss these concerns. Nonetheless, the environmental cost of fracking so far seems controllable and beats alternatives like coal. But here’s the thing: we don’t have much choice. Let’s review: 1. By my rough calculations, the point at which world fossil fuel extraction will peak, and thereafter decline, will occur around 2100. 2. Fossil fuels account for the vast majority of global energy consumption. Absent suitable replacements by 2100, our descendants are, not to put too fine a point on it, fucked. 3. The idea that alternative energy sources such as wind, solar, etc., are an adequate substitute for fossil fuels is a fantasy. As MIT professor Daniel Nocera has shown, even if all known alternative resources plus nuclear power (see below) are tapped to their practical limits, and current fossil fuel consumption stays constant, we’ll barely have enough juice to provide the world’s billions with (on average) a Poland-level lifestyle by 2050. 4. Yes, nuclear power is one longterm energy source that hasn’t yet been maximized. But in Nocera’s analysis, just to keep up with expected demand over the next 40 years we’d have to open an additional nuclear power plant every two days. 5. Not going to happen, obviously. But the fracking boom plus the exploitation of other unconventional fossil fuel resources such as Alberta’s tar sands may have bought us an additional 50 years. 6. That doesn’t mean we can blithely frack away with no thought to the future. Setting aside the question of energy exhaustion, there’s this thing called global warming, to say nothing of the deadly pollution afflicting much of Asia.
