Cookie Monster At a casual restaurant in Palo Alto, you and your friends were late for a movie, but you wanted dessert. So you asked one of the staff to bring you a cookie, even though the restaurant is one of those places where customers order at the counter. You said you were in a hurry, but you lingered much longer than the time it would have taken for you to just wait in line and get the cookie yourself—and you didn’t leave once it was brought to you. CUBAN-BORN José Manuel Carreño’s dancing days may have ended, but he’s eager to tackle the next challenge in his storied ballet career: that of Artistic Director of Ballet San Jose. The 45-year-old retired American Ballet Theater principal dancer starts his three-year contract Sept. 3. He succeeds another ABT alum, Wes Chapman, who stepped in as acting director for two seasons after the STEPPING INTO THE SPOTLIGHT company’s board of trustees let go of American Ballet Theater alum José founding director Dennis Nahat. Manuel Carreño takes over this fall as Ballet San Jose’s artistic director. “I’m very, very excited,” says Carreño, 45, whose credits in addition to ballet’s revered Romantic repertoire include a guest appearance on Dancing with the Stars. “It’s a new step in my career, in my life. And deﬁnitely, it moves me forward. My life has always been full of challenges.” The internationally ranked dancer was 10 years old when he started taking lessons at the Provincial School of Ballet in Havana, but even when he was a toddler his family exposed him to the ambience, studios, theaters and rehearsals of ballet. He later transferred into the Cuban National Ballet School. As a young adult, Carreño began making a name for himself in the competitive circuit, winning the gold medal at the New York International Ballet Competition in 1987 and the grand prix at Jackson, Mississippi’s International Ballet Competition in 1990. Having achieved some level of recognition, Carreño signed on as principal dancer for the English National Ballet in 1990, the Royal Ballet three years later and the American Ballet Theater in 1995. The experience of working with some of the world’s greatest ballet companies has prepared him for his latest challenge in San Jose, says Carreño, who made his Ballet San Jose debut as Basilio in February’s production of Don Quixote. “I’ve never been in this position, to lead a company,” he says. “I’ve always been dancing. But I think working with the biggest ballet companies–ABT is the biggest one in America–has prepared me.” Ballet San Jose is half the size of ABT, which Carreño says affords him more control. He can enact changes more quickly. The 27-year-old San Jose company is also still up-and-coming, which affords him a good opportunity to up the ante. “One of my ideas, my vision for San Jose, is to start touring with the company, to raise the level of exposure and take it to a higher level of recognition both nationally and internationally.” Raising recognition locally is another part of his vision. “I want to do more community outreach, to interact with children and expose the public to great dance,” he says. The ballet also promoted its principal ballet master Ray Rodriguez to Associate Artistic Director. “He’s my right-hand man,” says Carreño, who plans to announce the 2013-14 season some time this month. “He’s been there for so many years, so this is somebody who can really help me do anything.” —Jennifer Wadsworth www.balletsj.org

Some of Sunriseâ€™s success, as well as that of electronic music events in general, can be attributed to how the parties have evolved compared to traditional rock shows. People go into them expecting light shows, crazy costumes, exciting visuals and lots of eye candy in the crowd. â€œOther genres are more focused on the music itself,â€? Mine says. â€œWe make it more of an experience for all the senses. So music is just as important as the visual experience, which is just as important as the atmosphere. We want people to be completely immersed in another world.â€? This year, the promoters are looking to enhance other elements of the experience. Theyâ€™ll be setting up a Twitter channel for attendees that the DJ on stage will be able to see while performing. Heâ€™ll be able to talk back to the audience, or even alter his set accordingly. â€œWeâ€™re trying to break down the wall that separates the performer and the audience and try and develop ways that they can communicate with each other,â€? Mine says. Rather than ďŹ ghting technology and telling people to put their smartphones away, they are encouraging people to use them as a means to get consumed in the event. The next step is to set up video streams. Though they probably wonâ€™t be able to do it this year, by their next event they hope to set up several streams that people at home can watch, but more important, the audience at the event will see the streams and get a more in-depth view of whatâ€™s happening all around them. Some ideas include setting up streams in the backstage area, perhaps one of the audience and a close-up of the DJs performing.â€”Aaron Carnes

Bonanno points out in his terrific book, The Other Side of Sadness, that there’s no evidence for this belief or a number of widely held beliefs about grieving, like the notion that there are “stages of grief”—five of them—that every bereaved person must go through before they can go on. The “stages of grief” were based on psychiatrist Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross’ observations of people who were themselves dying, not those who’d lost someone they loved. “Grieving over the death of a loved one is not the same as facing your own death,” Bonanno points out. He adds that Freud’s notion that the bereaved must do “grief work” to heal— slog through every one of their memories

and hopes about their lost loved one (as if sorting a mountain of wet clothes at an industrial laundry)—is unsupported by research, and there’s even evidence that this re-chewing of memories strengthens their connection to the deceased, preventing healing. Yet another myth is that your failure to go into Scarlett O’Hara-style hysterics in the coffee room every day means you’re postponing your grieving. In fact, the idea of “delayed grief”—grief as a darkly mischievous force determined to eventually pop up and bite you—is another unsubstantiated idea from one of Freud’s psychoanalytic minions. Studies ﬁnd delayed grief extremely rare, almost to the point of nonexistence. What your behavior seems to reﬂect is resilience— healthy coping through putting your girlfriend’s life and death in perspective in ways that help you go on with your life. In other words, if you have a problem, it’s that your friends think you have a problem. The next time they suggest you’re grieving incorrectly, you might reassure them. Tell them you’re in the “bargaining” stage and that you’d feel much better if only they’d stock your fridge with beer and steak, and on their way out, would they mind detailing your car?
