ONE TOKE OVER THE LINE Two innocent teens succumb to the degenerate lure of reefer in San Jose Stage Company’s new show.

World of Weed WHEN IT COMES to a cult film like Reefer Madness, one wonders what more can be explored in an already absurdl collection of cautionary marijuana tales. Luckily, the San Jose Stage Company finds something new by embracing something old: the original script of the 1936 film itself, to which it shows commendable loyalty. Reefer Madness: The Musical, by Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney, brings to life the uproarious and downright farcical story of a young man’s descent into marijuana-induced lunacy with a multitalented cast, fantastic choreography, and an immersive and smoky setting where one almost feels a contact high. Reefer Madness The show opens with a “lecture” on a drug called Wednesday– “marihuana,” presented by the erudite but charismatic Thursday, 7:30pm, narrator (Galen Murphy-Hoffman). The audience is Friday–Saturday, introduced to a pair of wholesome teenagers, Jimmy and 8pm, and Sunday, Mary (Barnaby James and Courtney Hatcher). The story 2pm; $16.50–$45 then jumps to the so-called Reefer Den, where we meet Mae (Allison F. Rich), a sultry hostess who is bound to San Jose Stage her abusive boyfriend, Jack (Gabriel Grilli), through her Company addiction to the substance. Next comes a visit to the soda fountain, where the youth enjoy the controversial “race” music—i.e., jazz—of the time and where Jack trolls for potential victims. Jack takes Jimmy to the Reefer Den, where they meet a zany collection of people, including Sally (Jill Miller), an irresponsible and outlandish mother, and Ralph (Will Springhorn Jr.), whose messy clothing and behavior are typical of a marijuana user. Once Jimmy gets a taste for the reefer, his world goes spiraling out of control. Stage Company’s ability to translate a loud and frenetic musical into an intimate setting was astounding. The song routines were seamlessly choreographed, with the solid background band incorporated into the show (at several points, cast members pass joints to the backing band, cleverly breaking the fourth wall). The cast members are strong in acting, dancing and singing—and quick costume changes. Stand-outs include the narrator (MurphyHoffman), and Jack/Jesus (Grilli). Both actors superbly capture the preposterous confidence their characters demand, while still maintaining the subtle agreement between cast and audience about the silly premise of the show. The clever conceit behind Reefer Madness:The Musical is to keep all of the original silliness but to add phenomenal acting and singing. That happy result is that this entertaining homage could well keep this old and misguided cautionary tale alive for another generation or two. Bad Veins IN 2009, Cincinnati indie-rock duo Bad Veins seemed to come from out of nowhere. They had released their self-titled debut LP on Dangerbird Records with much fanfare and were suddenly the talk of the music blogosphere. In reality, however, they had been honing their craft for a couple years. They didn’t exactly blow up the way people were expecting, even though the album was worthy of the buzz it got. Singer Benjamin Davis’ songwriting mixes elements of solemn, heartfelt Friday, June 14; rock and nervous post-punk. Their performances, 8pm; free though, delivered the real magic. Davis played keys and guitars while Sebastian Schultz backed him up on drums. Cafe Stritch, The third “member” was Irene, a reel-to-reel tape machine San Jose that played additional backing tracks in their live sets. It was part spectacle, but with good music. After Bad Veins released last year’s superior sophomore album, The Mess We Made, on Modern Outsider, the band went through some changes: Schultz quit and was replaced by Jake Bonta. As they embark on their first major tour together (including a stop at Cafe Stritch on Friday), Bonta and Davis hope that their future will build on what the previous incarnation of the band had been working toward. “I think that Bad Veins hasn’t reached the peak yet,” Bonta says, “We’re very close to becoming the band that everyone thought that we were going to become back in 2009.” Davis and Bonta actually met via YouTube. When Schultz quit, Davis thought it would be impossible to find another drummer as energetic as he was, so he announced that he would be making Bad Veins into a full band, not just a duo. That is until one of Davis’ friends showed him videos of Bonta rocking out to random songs in his room on YouTube. Davis contacted Bonta and asked if he’d like to audition for Bad Veins. Bonta didn’t know who Bad Veins were but gave it a shot. Less than a week later, they were playing their first show together. Part of what makes their unusual lineup work, is that according to Bonta, they still have the basic essentials that gives a band character. “I think the two biggest aspects in the band that make you go, ‘Whoa that’s a good band,’ are the vocals and the drummer. That’s where the performance and excitement come from onstage,” Jake says.—Aaron Carnes
