The piece, Eighty One, is a world premiere by choreographer Jessica Lang, set speciﬁcally for Ballet San Jose’s “R/Evolutionary” program to dovetail with Ciupinski’s

commissioned score. This week, on Wednesday, April 10, Ciupinski will demonstrate the technology and discuss the piece at the ZERO1 Garage in downtown San Jose. For the uninitiated, the Theremin is a unique instrument, invented in 1928, that works by hand capacitance. That is, the two antennae pick up the player’s hand movements. One antenna converts the nearby movement to pitch, while the other converts the movement to amplitude. The player never touches the instrument. As a result, it’s easy to make spooky scienceﬁction soundtracks but more difficult to play a melodic tune with any degree of accuracy. Ciupinski, however, is using two Theremins in lieu of gestural MIDI controllers—which is to say, he’s not playing the Theremins as

musical instruments; rather, his hand movements are converted by the Theremins, with the audio then piped to MAX for Live, a hybrid of Ableton Live and MAX, an interactive graphic software environment for control signals. Together, they trigger or generate various components of Ciupinski’s electronic score. Parts of the score are prerecorded, while others are generated organically by the software in real time. The dance, while carefully choreographed, also includes improvisational elements and timing cues for the score. Likewise, while most of the music is precomposed on a macro level, Ciupinski will improvise parts of it on a micro level. As a result, the piece will always be slightly different for each performance. Ciupinski says the key is to maintain a balance between control and improvisation, between structure and variety. “On many occasions, the dancers follow me, but I’m also following them, in a way,” he explained. “I’m looking for certain gestures, or certain phrases, and I’m synchronizing to them. And on a lot of occasions,

though, I’m responsible for triggering certain dance events, and the dancers are waiting for specific moments, where I can decide when I will trigger them. It’s a hybrid between a traditional piece, prerecorded, with live improvisation and some kind of undetermined events.” For example, Ciupinski can move his hands in one particular way, the Theremin picks up the movement, and routes the audio to MAX for Live, which analyzes the signal in order to control anything Ciupinski wants. Or he can pull his right hand one way in order to alter the amount of reverb or pitch modulation the software applies to sounds organically generated by the signals converted from the movement of his other hand. If he wants, he can even implement a system to control the stage lighting in real time, or use servo motors to regulate the water fountains in the lobby. Or he could put infrared sensors on the dancers’ bodies, or on the floor, and have the dancers interactively control and/or interface with the music. All of which has been done before, but what’s totally new here is the use of two Theremins as gestural controllers. Ciupinski says he did initial research into various sensor technologies, like the scenarios just mentioned, but he found Theremins to be more natural: no messy wires and no interference from other signals nearby. “I thought about Theremins because they are very organic,” he said. “It’s not about how close is the certain surface of your hand, it’s more about how much flesh of your body is in the proximity of the antennas. And that feels way more organic. And it’s extremely sensitive as well. There’s just something very convenient about this setup.” Last November, Ciupinski, who lives and works in New York, came to San Jose to rehearse the piece with the ballet. He and Lang worked through ideas, discussed options and now the world premiere is good to go. Start waving your hands.

Homebrew clubs are a diverse bunch, just like their members, yet each homebrew club has its own mission and philosophy reflecting its members’ passions for good beer. Derek Wolfgram, communications co-chair of Silicon Valley Sudzers, says, “Homebrew clubs have their own personalities: some are really technical or competition oriented; others are very social, basically beer drinking clubs— not that there’s anything wrong with that.” Wolfgram 9I<N G8KIFC J`c`Zfe MXcc\p Jl[q\ij d\dY\ij gravitated to the ;\i\b Nfc]îXd c\]k # B\`k_ DZBXp Z\ek\i Xe[ Kfd Sudzers after <XjkdXe d\k i\Z\ekcp Xk ?XiipÊj ?f]YiXl è JXe Afj\% arriving in the South Bay in 2009: “I’ve always appreciated the way the Sudzers have balanced the educational aspect of learning about beer and brewing with the social activities.” Formed in 1997, the Sudzers are an active South Bay homebrew club, holding monthly meetings to share and receive feedback on homemade brews. One such event is based on an idea from beer-industry pioneer Pete Slosberg in partnership with the East Bay’s Slow Hand BBQ restaurant. Several months ago, Slosberg and Slow Hand owner Dan Frengs invited Sudzers members to use Slow Hand’s smoker to create smoked malts but with a twist—malts were smoked with wood smoke and the aromas from a variety of smoking meats, like barbecue ribs, brisket and chicken. The resulting beers can be tasted Sunday at Slow Hand BBQ. Funny, I always assumed Satan would manage bands that sounded like Slayer or Sepultura, not a high-energy, jangle-pop quartet. Still, there is a subtle darkness underlining what is mostly a happy sound. Vulture Smile deliver a weird combination of sunny twee-pop and sulking shoegaze, underlined by some sophisticated post-rock guitar work. Lead singer Ed Pereira punctuates this dichotomy by varying between restrained melodies and all-out screaming. They ﬁt in nicely with

the growing scene of ’80s alt-rock revival bands in San Jose like the Trims and Turn Me On Dead. (AC)

KENNY SCHICK Blue Rock Shoot, Saratoga Fri-Sat – 7:30 and 10:30pm; $10 In 2009, longtime San Jose musician Kenny Schick (and his wife, Sabiné Heusler-Schick) started the company Basement3, which records and produces bands (not to mention helps out with photography and graphic design). Schick is, of course, the perfect person to record other people’s bands. He plays a million instruments and has been in a ton of completely different bands: Dot 3 (art-rock), Neosoreskin (circus-ska), Curveball (funk) and Dub Nation (reggae), plus he’s released ﬁve solo albums. His latest, Shufﬂe, which

comes out this weekend, is his ﬁrst in six years. It’s really a collection of old unreleased tracks and new songs. The title is appropriate because the album swerves all over the map stylistically: Americana, post-punk, jazz, funk—the list goes on. It’s truly eclectic. (AC)

LIGHTING THE WAY EmazingLights sells rave gloves that are light shows unto themselves.

Rave Candy CASHING IN on the nearly $5 billion dance-music industry, Southern California–based EmazingLights is expanding with a new Milpitas store catering to the EDM fans who fill some of the Bay Area’s largest venues. Simulating an EDM event, the store (which celebrated its grand opening last Friday) features blacked-out windows, a DJ station and a 2,000-square-foot hardwood dance floor. Its walls are decked with fur boots, brightly covered tutus, gloves and original Tshirts reading “Legalize Gloving.” But the shop is more than just a candy store for candy ravers. Despite what shop owners call a “growing gloving culture”—dancing with gloves with LED lights at the tips to create a personalized EmazingLights light show—event producers have banned the rave toys from events due to a stigma attached to drug use at events. 100 Dixon Road, EmazingLights founder and CEO Brian Lim hopes to change Milpitas that perception. Insomniac, the largest producer of dance-music events in the 408.262.1600 United States, banned the gloves in 2010 after a 15-year-old girl died at the Electric Daisy Carnival festival, an event that draws more than 300,000 to Las Vegas each year. Lim—who sells the gloves for $20 to $80 at the store and online—says the art of gloving isn’t taken seriously by the promotions company. “It’s not just wiggling their fingers around,” Lim says. “There are so many moves and combinations people can do. It’s really harmless fun, and I think Insomniac isn’t seeing the artistic side of it.” Lim now uses his three stores in Southern California and the Milpitas location as places for the gloving community to come, practice and share a common interest. It’s a community Lim had a hand in shaping by organizing weekly, monthly and annual competitions where thousands of glovers attend and compete. Lim also advises gloving groups on a collegiate level with fraternity-like chapters. UCBerkeley was among the first chapters and currently offers a gloving class. Before opening EmazingLights, the 25-year old Lim used to hold gloving sessions from the trunk of his car using homemade LED gloves. Frustrated with the LED vendors at the time, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Two and a half years later, he’s an industry leader, making and manufacturing gloves. Lim admits to riding the coattails of the EDM popularity surge. “Now it’s on the radio, and Skrillex started winning Grammys,” he says. “It’s been great as a movement.” Lim and the EmazingLights crew remain confident that the light-show culture can stand on its own with or without acceptance of larger EDM events. “You can see by our community that light shows and gloving are legitimate art forms,” Lim says. “Kids are here practicing every single day and, at the end of the day, it’s all from our love of EDM.”—Jennifer Elias

Holding Pattern THE INDIAN call center has become an unfortunate racist cliché, the place where robotlike workers perform outsourced American jobs, and even for many who don’t partake in churlish vitriol about “stolen” jobs, there is something undeniably surreal about being connected with a service person in South Asia. With her play Disconnect (now running at San Jose Rep), Anupama Chandrasekhar provides a welcome perspective from the other side of the telephone. Set at a call center in Chandrasekhar’s home city of Chennai, India, the play depicts the call center as a symbol of globalization, but also as a place where real people, not cultural stereotypes, slave their lives away. Avinash, played by Rajesh Bose, is an aging manager at an American-owned credit card company. His superior is Jyothi (Devon Ahmed), a woman whose concocted Americanisms sound like a cross between an Eastern seaboard accent and Valleyspeak. During an employee review, Jyothi determines that the traditionally minded Avinash does not embody the trendy “core values” of the company, and she demotes him to a position in Illinois—that is, the ﬂoor of the building that deals with customers from that state, where he is to supervise a trio of ambitious debt collectors.

Disconnect Runs through April 14; $29–$74 San Jose Repertory Theatre

The collectors, Ross, Vidya and Giri (Imran Sheikh, Sharone Sayegh and Ray Singh, respectively) labor through the nights in a windowless “upstairs basement,” subsisting on rations of Coca-Cola as they try to squeeze money out of American creditors, often building up a rapport by pretending to be American themselves. The act seems to come naturally to these young, somewhat Americanized workers, and it’s an effective tactic until “supercollector” Ross takes his role too far and jeopardizes the entire office. This is the consequence of the “disconnect” referred to in the play’s title, between India and the United States, between the characters’ true selves and their aspirational identities. These kids are not Americans, no matter how much their employer wants them to be, or how much they want to be. This setup is all remarkably dynamic for a play about sitting and talking on telephones. The dialogue runs at a quick clip, and the scenes shared by Sheikh, Sayegh and Singh, often with simultaneous phone conversations evoking a massively stressful, hectic atmosphere, are especially energetic. The grueling regimen of work that they portray almost makes you squirm in your seat, and it’s hard to fend off a sense of nail-biting terror at watching them dig themselves deeper and deeper into inescapable holes.—Sean Conwell
