Throughout the decades, it survived fires, blizzards, robberies and thousands of miles of traveling wear and tear. The circus was Weber’s dream and his ministry, although the performers came
from all points of the spiritual spectrum. Now living in Milwaukee, Weber returns to Silicon Valley next Tuesday, March 19, appearing at East West Bookstore in Mountain View to read from his 2012 book, The Circus That Ran Away With a Jesuit Priest: Memoir of a Delible Character. On Thursday, March 21, an special reunion performance takes place in the Fess Parker Theater at Santa Clara University, at 6:30pm, featuring special guests and including guitarist Stevie Coyle and juggler Dana Smith—both alums of SCU and the Circus. San Jose native and SCU Bronco Kevin Curdt, who toured with the group as a juggler, unicyclist and trapeze artist, slipped me a classified document titled “An Overview of Life With the Royal Lichtenstein Circus.” Typed on circus stationery from at
least 20 years ago, it says the circus, at its foundation, was “a self-consciously poetic invitation to play, wonder and imagine, realized through an energetic parade-ritual of traditional circus visions. Thus a potpourri of juggling, magic, comedy, mime, acrobatics and animal acts is seen to complement and inspire hope and quality in the day-to-day life of its spectators.” Weber’s book tells his life story, from a humble youth in Yuba City to his arrival at Bellarmine in 1953 to a storied career running the circus and breathing fire. The Circus That Ran Away With a Jesuit Priest is jammed with historical tidbits form the underbelly of San Jose. For example, Weber explains the moment when he launched the ideas that eventually turned into the circus. He stood on a box in downtown San Jose’s Fountain Alley, the box lettered with “Sam’s Sidewalk Show,” and performed balancing acts and escape tricks for the passersby. “Those folks who gathered were midday shoppers and retired people who lived above the downtown stores,” Weber writes. “They were all guinea pigs. So was I. It was a mutual test to see
whether I could hold an open-ended crowd, all by myself. I had no permit, no space reservation. Such things were unneeded in San Jose those days.” Page 128 even features a photo of Weber sitting on that box in Fountain Alley in 1971. By then, Weber had graduated from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley and was teaching at St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco. Within a few months thereafter, other folks came on board to strengthen the crew, including a thenunknown Steve Aveson. Now a multiple-Emmy-winning newsman, Aveson claims the Royal Lichtenstein Circus on his résumé, right alongside ABC News, 20/20 and Good Morning America. Photos and vignettes of Aveson appear throughout the book. Aside from barn-burning yarns from the traveling circus life, the book functions as a sidelight on Santa Clara Valley history, especially Chapter Five: “Stretches.” Here, Weber describes in vivid detail his arrival from Yuba City and new experiences at Bellarmine High School, beginning in 1953. Full tuition, plus room and board, was $1,100 per year. There were 800 students, 200 of which were resident students. Weber describes march-stepping through a meticulous daily schedule of grooming inspection, mass, meals, room cleanups, classes and study halls, all before lights went out at 9:30pm nightly. “I immediately sensed that I was a small-town boy,” writes Weber. “The skyline of downtown San Jose was a fair distance from campus but looked immense, and the neighborhood areas stretched all the way to the edge of that skyline and in all other directions as well.” We also get curious insights into same-sex school life at Bellarmine, adolescent self-doubt, bravado and sexual experimentation. I won’t spoil the action for you. In any event, Weber says his pre-circus inclinations began to materialize in the form of parlor tricks and sleight-of-hand games: “It took no time at all to find a magic store downtown on First Street where I spent $1.25 of my allowance for ‘The Siberian Chain Escape,’” he writes.

Yet as the SoFA neighborhood become younger and more casual, the traffic for fine dining waned. “Conceptually, white tablecloth fine dining isn’t really as relevant as it once was,” said Cafe Stritch manager Michael Borkenhagen, adding that he hopes Stritch will mesh well with the neighborhood’s artistic culture. As a nod to the artistic vibe of SoFA, the restaurant’s name describes the straightened alto saxophone played by jazz musician Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Michael described the restaurant as having “a casual funky vibe that’s real fun and real good food.” The current menu is just a small offering of what the restaurant hopes to eventually offer but features American staples such as house-made clam chowder in a bread bowl, a sandwich board with selections such as a BLT with tomatillo slaw as well as vegan and vegetarian options. The bar also features a range of craft beers such as Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA, Firestone Walker Velvet Merlin Oatmeal Stout and Lagunitas IPA. N 2011 Jeffrey Nguyen joined the fusion-friendly world of food trucks and opened Le Bon de Cuisine in San Jose, which took elements of Vietnamese and French food to make some delicious, unique street food. French and Vietnamese shouldn’t seem like such a dramatic marriage given the influence France has had on Vietnamese cuisine. The French introduced such ingredients as beef, carrots, onions, lettuce, tarragon and, of course, baguettes, which are found at nearly every Vietnamese cafe in the form of sandwiches. Still, given the different ways the cuisines have evolved over the past century, and the distinct ways they’ve used ingredients, the blend is unusual—but in a good way. Recently, Nguyen has made the transition to a brick-and-mortar restaurant. The food is similar, but the presentation and ambience accent the gourmet qualities better—maybe it’s the contemporary art on the wall. Le Bon de Cuisine remains casual, though, as you order the food off of a big glowing digital menu at the register and wait for your name to be called. Coming from the food-truck business, the menu is small but with a lot of variety. On the Vietnamese side of the spectrum: pho (beef noodle soup) and garlic noodles. On the French side: coq au vin (red wine stew with braised chicken and roasted potatoes) and a classic French burger with truffle fries. Nguyen is especially qualified to take on the challenge of a French-Vietnamese restaurant. His grandfather, a Vietnamese native, ran a restaurant (also called Le Bon de Cuisine) in Saigon, between 1950 and 1975, which served French food. For only $3, they sell what look like puffy pork tacos, called Buddha Buns. Upon closer inspection, they seem more like deconstructed pork buns, remade into tiny sandwiches. The pork belly is a truly succulent mixture of pork meat and fat. Mixed with the Cognac reduction sauce, papaya and green onions, the Buddha Buns are very intense, albeit brief, bursts of flavors worth trying. The garlic noodles, which can be ordered plain for $6.50, or with chicken, pork or shrimp for an additional $2–$3, are much simpler, yet still managed to balance flavors well. I ordered the noodles plain, which still came with crumpled bacon pieces and fresh parsley. The garlic, while quite prominent, was not overpowering. The bacon was a thick cut and surprisingly juicy. From the burger menu, I opted for the French Burger ($6.50). With the tangy French mustard and the caramelized onions, it had a surprising complexity about it. Off the sandwich menu, I ordered the Fat Charles for $7.95, which was similar to a standard Vietnamese sandwich but with different flavors thrown in the mix. Unlike a lot of polished poppunk bands, Greater Fools seem like they’re actually having a blast—and not just trying to get famous. Where a lot of bands in this genre seem to devote an inordinate amount of time to taking perfectly composed photos, Greater Fools spend
come loaded with screaming, screaming a lot of screaming. Yet, most of their choruses are softer and have actual melodic singing parts (which are arguably the weakest parts of their songs). Cool, tragic, small-scale and focused, Ken Loach’s ‘The Wind That Shakes the Barley’ honors the bitterness of a rebel’s life Downton Abbey’s Maggie Smith was astonishing in 1987’s The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne—but few Americans braved that kiss-ofdeath title. The film is a beautifully wrought tragedy of a respectable, narrow-minded closet alcoholic in Belfast in the late 1940s. Bob Hoskins also excels as the brother of Smith’s landlady—a brash go-getter who spent enough time in the States to pick up bad manners, if not any real money. Also startling: Ian McNeice as an obese, scheming fraud of a poet. Ken Loach’s The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) is, along with Paul Greengrass’ forceful debut Bloody Sunday, one of the two best films for explaining Irish history to a foreigner. (Michael Collins, intended as a two-part film but forced into one episode, will just confuse outsiders utterly.) Loach stages the Irish Civil War as familiar strife between liberals and radicals. Cool, tragic, smallscale and focused, the film honors the bitterness of a rebel’s life, so romanticized on the walls of American Irish bars. Recently, when Hall was finally ready to release his own poetry book, Erectile Dysfunction, naturally Victorino and Collins wanted to release it on Orchard City as well. “What I strive for in my work above all else is honesty, even if it paints me in a bad light,” Victorino explains. “Chad’s writing comes from a similar place. He’s not scared to face his failings and to Erectile share them.” Hall doesn’t just share his failings, he shines a bright light on them and exposes their every detail—a Dysfunction process that can be uncomfortable. Hall talks about heartbreak, loneliness, getting drunk, pushing people $9.99 plus shipping away and, of course, erectile dysfunction. “It’s the ultimate orchardcitybooks male vulnerability. It’s a common thing, yet we’re all so andnoise.com embarrassed by it,” Hall says. The concept is a perfect platform for Hall as he devotes much of the book dealing with his conflicting ideas and feelings about his own manhood, as well as the different expectations of society. “What is the modern man now? What are we? Are we macho misogynistic men, or are we completely effeminate pussies? We’re neither,” Hall says. The book opens with a piece named after the poet Hall has clearly been influenced by the most, Charles Bukowski—not just in his simple, nonrhyming, narrative style but also in his blunt, dark topics. Hall put this poem first in part to be transparent about his influences but also to move past him and to acknowledge that while Bukowski was a brilliant writer, he wasn’t necessarily a great person. The darkness in Hall’s poems is an attempt to work through these feelings, not revel in them. The book closes with a poem, also called “Erectile Dysfunction,” perhaps the loneliest, most somber piece in the book. In the midst of the sadness, Hall makes it clear that he desires to move past his fear of intimacy, which is a constant struggle. The final line, “Leave me alone, but don’t leave me alone,” is, according to Hall, the most important one in the book. “Ending with anything else was lightening the purpose of what I was doing,” Hall says. Erectile Dysfunction is the first volume released on Orchard City Books and Noise not written by Victorino. There will be more books and albums on Orchard City Books and Noises this year by other artists.—Aaron Carnes

BARBARA (PG-13; 105 min.) Dr. Barbara Wolff (Nina Hoss), late of Berlin, arrives at a hospital in a backwater near the Baltic coast. She is a handsome, cold woman at the end of her 30s. The humane, literate Dr. André (Ronald Zehrfeld), who runs the hospital, knows a little about Barbara’s plight. It’s 1980; the German Democratic Republic will be in existence for one more decade; and the squealers and secret police are making the most of the time remaining. It turns out that Dr. Wolff is in the provinces because she’s just out of political prison. Christian Petzgold’s film is an intelligent, mature love triangle with well-picked citations of Rembrandt and Turgenev to deepen the film’s frame of reference. (Opens Friday at Camera 3, San Jose.) with it all—Carell’s title character has become a jaded, velveteen-wrapped creep. The team splits; he hits the skids—and then Burt re-encounters his old childhood mentor. (The mentor is Alan Arkin, and this hale character actor’s sereneness and pleasure in performing almost save the movie.) Jim Carrey is interesting as Steve Gray, a long-haired fakir of a street performer whose act involves serious bodily harm. His character is billed as “The Brain Rapist.” For all I know this title was hung on Carrey himself by some mean critic, just as “rubber-faced fartsmith” was. Carrey reminds you here that he spurs contradictory impulses to loathe and laugh. And if that sounds contradictory, talk to a Jerry Lewis fan—Carrey has a bed of coals sequence that’s as good as Lewis at his best. (Opens Fri.) (RvB)
OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL (PG; 130 min.) Seeing anyone work with this material makes one want to quote the Yeats line about treading softly. Being a blockbuster of 2013, there’s little softness to the film’s tread, and the tread gets heavier with a Sept. 11 allegory (never forget). We’re told that in the Land of Oz, “the people are united.”The exception to the bombast is an extremely touching sequence in a porcelain village blasted by the wrath of a witch. Ideally someone like Burt Lancaster is what was needed in the role of the Wizard—a trifling Kansas mountebank forced by circumstance to battle for the peoples of Oz. James Franco is neither beguilingly slimy nor really terrifying when he thunders—it’s elemental miscasting. (Plays valleywide.) (RvB)

THE SUICIDE SHOP (2012) Patrice Leconte, whose light attitude toward mortality goes at least as far back as his 1990 film The Hairdresser’s Husband, takes that attitude all the way to a lovable, witty and macabre animated musical. On a gray Parisian side street, Maison Tuvache (established 1854) has been selling potential suicides ropes, poisons and razors—and even samurai swords. Their motto: “Life a failure? Make death a success!”The lady of the place (voiced by Isabelle Spade) is one of those chirpy shopkeepers comedienne Karin Viard does so well; her husband, Mishima, is a debonair Gomez Addams type. But then tragedy strikes when they have a child whose disgusting zest for life interferes with the family business. Based on Jean Teule’s novel, this movie in need of a cult does end (sadly) on a positive note. What can you do—dead people don’t buy movie tickets. (Plays Mar 17 at 1pm in San Jose at Camera 3.) BONNIE AND THE BANG BANG Last year was a busy one for local indie-folk outfit Bonnie and the Bang Bang. Not only were they gigging consistently throughout the Bay Area, they also released their debut EP, Ode to Darkness, and even toured the West Coast and the Midwest. 9flk`b` fe k_\ Dfm\ CELEBRATED local venue and comic-book shop SLG Art Boutiki will throw two nights of packed programming before its South Market Street location closes for good to make way for a new residential development.

On March 15, SLG Art Boutiki hosts Drop Dead Sixty, Curious Quail, Fossil Tree, Brooke D and 8:19. March 16 features Picture Atlantic, Bent Knee, Little Red Lung, Rin Tin Tiger and Zen Zenith. The venue’s last shows feature some of the owner’s top musical picks. “They’re all personal favorites of mine,” says Dan Vado, owner of SLG Art Boutiki. Vado says that no band turned the gig down. “People made the time,” he says. “They’re trying to make sure we end on a high note.” Asked why the space holds a personal reverence for so many, Vado cites Art Boutiki’s willingness to let anyone shine onstage. “We took the same approach to giving bands a space as we did publishing comics—it’s all about what you can do with your art,” he explains. “If a musician takes themselves seriously, we’ll bring them back.”

Art Boutiki will be moving from its current space to a location on Race Street near The Alameda. Vado sees the move as an opportunity to get involved with a growing midtown scene that’s become populated with boutiques and specialty shops over the last few years. Although he isn’t sure what the neighborhood reception will be for live music at the new location, his outlook remains confident: “I’m thinking we’ll be OK; we don’t run rowdy shows.” While he’s sad to be leaving downtown, Vado admits that his landlord told him 11 years ago that there were plans to develop the building eventually. He does wish there were a way for it to be converted to something other than residential space. “No one saw potential for that corner to be anything other than some middle- to high-rise development,” he says. With San Jose turning downtown into what Vado calls a “bedroom community,” it’s hard for venues like Art Boutiki to compete with money gained through redevelopment. Though Art Boutiki may have only hosted a small community, it was fervent. To Vado, that passion is worth something. He just wishes downtown saw value in helping develop that passion. “It’s the little guy people really get behind,” Vado muses. Despite a tough location, Art Boutiki was able to create a scene that resonated with both bands and patrons. As the venue awaits its reception on Race Street, yet another live music space turns vacant downtown.—Brandon Roos
