Extra Credit Stephen Layton’s article “KSJS Turns 50� (Feb. 6) lacked some vital information. The station transmitter was built, operated and maintained by a technician. He also built much of the television equipment used by

located at Fourth and San Fernando streets—still owns that collection of sheet music, something like 12,000 titles. Since there’s no way to possibly implement public browsing of the whole collection, one must search the catalog by title and then ask the librarian to fetch the music and bring it out. The collection includes pop standards, old torch classics, jazz, blues, novelty songs, easy listening, show tunes and all sorts of forgotten oddities from the Great American Songbook, all thanks to McDaniel. One of the San Jose Public Library’s greatest benefactors of the 20th century, McDaniel was a legendary eccentric in these parts. An amateur poet and crooner who graduated from San Jose High in 1926, McDaniel spent his life collecting thousands of books,
eventually donating all of them to various departments of the library. He died in 1977, a 70-year-old bachelor, and the books he donated had a combined worth of more than $100,000. After his passing, the library even named a community room after him, the only time they had ever done such a thing. It gets even better. McDaniel’s mammoth collection of sheet music, along with an equally insane collection of records and music books, helped justify what came to be called the Music Room at the old Market and San Fernando location, an entirely separate department with its own card catalog, which opened in 1949. Eight years later, another massive donation showed up, this one on behalf of the widow of Dr. C.M. Richards, former leader of Elks Concert Orchestra, the main gig around here before the San Jose Symphony officially launched in 1937. Richards also conducted his own men’s chorus, and the donation made by his widow included an entire catalog of men’s choral music, plus a large group of opera vocal scores and miniature orchestra scores.
Most of that sheet music is still located in the California Room today. For example, one file cabinet features titles from “Emaline” to “Flower of Araby.” The last title in the collection is “Zoot Suit.” Eventually, as the ’60s progressed, the Music Room evolved into an unprecedented multimedia endeavor for a public library. In a library document from 1964, Peggy Kraynick, then head of the Music Room, explained the facility had “record players in four of the listening booths, a piano which may be used for one hour at a time, an old Edison cylinder machine which can be used to demonstrate early recordings, a 16mm projector and screen for library use, and two slide and filmstrip projectors. The Talking Book recordings and Projected Books on 35mm film are housed and circulated from the Music Room to blind and handicapped patrons.” Continuing, Kraynick explained that the Music Room had become a charter member of the Northern California Film Circuit in 1953 and, by 1964, had owned 100 films, all the while receiving 20 titles a month from the circuit. At that time, the department also offered 400 filmstrips for circulation, complete with guides and recordings to accompany them. Eight hundred 78s and 1,500 mono LPs made up the record collection. “The development of the Music Room has been a combination of ‘learn-as-you-go’ and ‘do-it-yourself ’ experiments,” wrote Kraynick in 1964. “By observing routines in similar departments in other libraries, we have developed one of the outstanding film and record lending services in Northern California.” Thanks to those librarians, the legend lives on, at least in this columnist’s head. When I slithered into the main library on San Carlos Street in 2000, in order to photocopy tunes like “Satan Takes a Holiday” and “Laugh, Clown, Laugh,” I had no idea those exact pieces of sheet music were donated by McDaniel decades earlier. Just like a snake eating its own tail, everything seems to be coming full circle.

This is the fast food of the future. It’s quick, cheap and delicious but also healthy and flavorful. What I like about Tava is the amount of thought the owners have put into their business. They describe Tava as “America’s gateway to Indian food,” which they have achieved by designing a simple menu with fewer ingredients than a typical Indian restaurant, preparing familiar-looking food but still remaining true to traditional flavors. I like Indian food precisely for its strong, complex, competing flavors, but Tava’s slightly damped-down version certainly creates a superior alternative to most fast-food restaurants. Ordering at Tava resembles the assembly-line process at Subway. First you select your meal’s packaging—a wrap, rice bowl or salad. The wrap is known as a “burroti,” a clever mashup of burrito and roti, the south Asian whole-wheat, tortillalike bread. If you order the burroti, they grab a ball of dough and actually flatten and cook the roti right there on a tava, the large Asian griddle that inspired the restaurant’s name. The protein options include chicken, lamb, paneer (a soft Indian cheese) and spicy Goan chickpeas (cooked in coconut milk, garlic, ginger and onions). The prices are based solely on the choice of protein. Lamb is $7.99; all the others are $6.99. The next choice is sauce. There is tikka (light tomato cream) and daal (spicy lentils). You finish it off with a choice of chutney: mild tamarind, medium cilantro, hot mint or an in-house hot “lava” sauce. I ordered a rice bowl with chicken, tikka and yogurt dip; it tasted somewhat like chicken tikka masala, but since the sauce and chicken were cooked separately, it didn’t meld quite as well. I also got a burroti with lamb, tikka and the lava sauce— which was really hot. I sampled a salad with paneer, spicy Goan chickpeas, daal and mild tamarind. It was by far the best dish I ordered. The paneer was lightly grilled, which gave it a nice punch, and the chickpeas had the complex flavors the other items lacked. You could taste the ginger, garlic and the light sweetness of the coconut milk in every bite. The high-ceilinged corner space is lit by a pair of impressive frostedglass hanging fixtures and two large walls of windows. The seating is in rattan-style chairs around small, round marble-top tables—with several overstuffed chairs for longer lounging periods. Extra tables take advantage of the wide sidewalk on Campbell Avenue. A corner bookshelf contains an eclectic selection of paperback and hard-cover fiction, as well as toys to amuse those too young to be satisfied with one of the cut-above espresso drinks (sourced from Barefoot Coffee Roasters). A bit of retro chic is provided by two old-school school desks—the one-piece kind with hinged, lift-up tops under which students used to squirrel away broken pencils, rulers and the erasers. My latte was satisfying and rich, a perfect foil for an exquisite salted fig caramel with a blue glaze on top. The selection of chocolates showcases Snake & Butterfly’s main occupation with intriguing flavor combinations like apricot bourbon and jalapeño dolce de leche. A large, glass-fronted counter with a shiny red base contains two dozen flavors of gelato, some of them not encountered all that often: pumpkin, honey lavender and coppa mista. On a warm day, Snake & Butterfly would be the perfect spot for an affogato—a scoop of gelato gently melting into a shot or two of espresso. The cafe also serves pour-over coffees, hot chocolate and chai, as well as some gluten-free baked treats. Of course, this is also the place to pick up wrapped bars of S&B’s chocolate, jars of flavored caramel sauces and four-packs of truffles. A excellent last-minute option for Valentine’s Day is a box of chocolates inside a dark-chocolate box (no waste that way), for $30. Snake & Butterfly hosts a variety of events, including live music, trivia sessions, tastings and even a book club. The cafe opens at a leisurely 10am and stays open into mid-evening.—Michael S. Nowadays, every town has several DJs with crates of obscure hip-hop, soul, funk and Afrobeat jams who will assemble a mix that is not only packed with the best songs you’ve never heard but will also construct the order of the songs with artistic flair. Philadelphia DJ Rich Medina was an early pioneer in making DJing cool and artistic. He was the DJ who introduced Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti to a lot of people—and made going to nightclubs a chance to learn about music, not just dance. He’s been working hard for more than two decades, and he’s still one of the best at it. (AC)

reinvents herself like five times in each video. As far as being punk rock, well maybe that’s an exaggeration, but she has collaborated with Tim Armstrong from Rancid, as well as Linda Perry from 4 Non Blondes and Beck. Plus, the Hives are opening for her on this tour, and they just opened up for the Refused last year. Pink has a self-awareness and sense of humor most pop stars lack, and it’s nice to hear songs on the radio about female empowerment for a change. (AC)

In real life, Wang’s wife moved from Beijing to the United States, and
the Chinese government supposedly denied his application to visit her eight times over, so his performance reflects his nightmarish experience via Dadaist absurdity. Guest curator Miles Barth organized the original show, which ran last year at the Katonah Museum of Art in New York, in four sections: “Performance and Photography”; “Narratives and Constructed Images”; “Landscapes and Cityscapes”; and “Photojournalism and Documentary Photography.” Most of the photographers in the exhibit were born between 1960 and 1981 and represent an emerging generation of artists who attempted to elevate China onto the world photography stage during the last 12year astrological cycle. Since 2000 and 2012 were both Dragon years, Rising
show. Dragon became the symbol of the show Several motifs emerge in the work, but the overarching theme is that of China’s entrance into the mass hysteria of global consumerism and the relationship of that process to traditions that are thousands of years old. Several of the artists photograph their closeknit domestic territory and the changes they see due to the technological and industrial evolution, which is often equated with Westernization. Li Yu and Liu Bo, working under the creative name Liyu + Liubo, take Chinese tabloid articles from Chutian Golden Paper and Chutian Metropolis Daily for inspiration, fabricating their own satiric photographs using the original headlines and texts as their captions. For example, in Chutian Golden Paper 200708-13, An Escapee Being Chased Dropped Through the Top Floor of a Building and Scared Everybody Inside, we see factory workers sitting around a boardroom table while someone’s legs come crashing through the ceiling. Wang Qingsong vamps on imagery of peony flowers, traditional symbols
of good luck and prosperity. Red Peony, White Peony and Frosted Peony (2003) consists of three photographs of three traditional Chinese flower arrangements, but with the peonies created from vegetables and raw slices of lamb and beef. In the accompanying text, Wang says the flowers are, “a literal depiction of the transition from prosperity to decay, along with my hope of freezing such materialistic decadence made from fleshy desires.” Landscape photos, including cityscapes, make up other parts of the show, with several artists providing commentary on how much their immediate surroundings have been obliterated by the progress of industry. Wang Wusheng, in particular, provides scenic black-and-white shots of the Huangshan mountain range of Northern China, a.k.a. the Yellow Mountains. Essentially using the mountains as his muse, he says: “This is the homeland of my soul, the thoughts of a dreamland. ... I wanted these photos to remind people which life is better: a modern one or a traditional one?” Overall, something deeply odd emanates from the way in which the show depicts this particular generation of photographers. The relationship some Westerners might have to Chinese photography remains somewhat screwy, due to decades of communist propaganda imagery. Viewing the show, it’s hard to remove that screwy perception from one’s mind. It seems as if the artists themselves are grappling with that exact same issue, underneath the surface. To go even further, it seems that the artists are using the motifs and techniques of the West in order to appeal to the West—but while ridiculing the West at the same time. Hell, if I were them, that’s exactly what I would do. Which means, to me, that Rising Dragon is properly titled. Chinese photography, as a contemporary movement, seems to be in its infancy. It will be an intriguing movement to follow, in that sense. Since we are now officially entering the Year of the Water Snake, a beautifully elusive and mysterious sign, one can only imagine what will transpire next.

DXb`e^ 9ffb AS MUCH as I appreciate the convenience of e-readers like the Kindle and Nook, I still treasure the tactile pleasures of the physical object—the distinctive smell of a leather binding, a stray page with its corner neatly folded down, the felicities of typographic design, the generosity of margins in fine-press volumes, the penciled notes of previous readers (everything but the annoying color highlighting of obsessive-compulsive college students). No better place exists to indulge in—wallow is more like it—the pleasures of the printed page than the California International Antiquarian Book Fair, which brings together more than 200 dealers in rare and unusual books, as well as maps, manuscripts and prints. The books on display and for sale this weekend range from the earliest products of the bookmaker’s art, known as incunabula and printed before 1500, to modern first editions with pristine dust jackets (often worth more than the book itself ) to limitededition titles from specialty presses. Not everything is priced for the 1 percent, and I have often come back laden with affordable finds that satisfy both the urge to read and to collect.

GX`ek @k ÉI\[Ê WHEN STANDING before a Mark Rothko painting, you may find yourself absorbed in the expansive canvas; or, exasperated, you may mutter “a thirdgrader could have painted this.” This dichotomy only adds to the mystique of the artist and his work, which is the subject of John Logan’s Red, now at San Jose Stage, where the company’s artistic director, Randall King, plays the great abstract painter, a role filled by Alfred Molina in the play’s acclaimed West End and Broadway runs. Here, the visage of Rothko, bald and slouching in his ill-fitting, paint-spattered clothes, is onstage before the show even starts. He gazes intently at his paintings; specifically, the Seagram Murals, the vivid set of pictures he designed for the Four Seasons Restaurant. You wonder what he’s thinking, what the great swaths of red and black mean to him. By the play’s end, you’ll be thinking about what they mean to you.

Red details Rothko’s relationship with fictional assistant Ken. This character, played by Aaron Wilton, serves as an audience surrogate and a foil for his employer, though he has a not-uninteresting backstory of his own. The pair’s interactions show Rothko as arrogant and capricious—and so angry that his serious approach is becoming anachronistic in the Pop Art era of comic books and Warhol’s Campbell’s soup cans. Through his bitterness, however, shines a touching parental concern for his paintings. Ken has his own notions of what art should be and is surprisingly bold in standing up to the imposing Rothko. In the play’s version of events, it is Ken who elicits Rothko’s conflicted feelings about the Four Seasons project. The painter is torn between his stated goal, to “ruin the appetite of every son of a bitch who ever eats in that room,” and the thought of his precious works hanging unappreciated in such a shallow, bourgeois setting. More interesting than the spoken dialogue is the visual experience of the play, which brims with chaos and passion. Cigarette smoke swirls through the air and bits of noodle fly out of King’s mouth as he talks art through a meal of Chinese food. Most striking of all is the red, blood-like paint that is liberally strewn about, and the physical act of King and Wilton actually painting onstage creates a very visceral sense of the artist’s connection with his work on the canvas.—Sean Conwell

Most of the other artists represented have some association with the skateboarding industry, including Rich Jacobs, an Oakland-based artist and curator whose work stood out for its raw and imaginative mix of portraits and abstraction on homemade paper. Seeing Things Gallery has only been open since early November of last year but has already put on six different shows (sometimes two a month) and become part of South First Fridays. Owner Tanju is a photographer and artist best known by his print ads for Enjoi Skateboards, Black Label Skateboards and Pig Wheels, as well as his long association with the collection of San Jose and South Bay skaters known as the Tiltmode Army. “Much of my life has revolved around skating, and the work shown in the gallery reflects that,” Tanju says. That focus extends to next month’s show, “Barricade,” devoted to skate photography. The gallery also carries a growing collection of zines, books and oddities for display and purchase.—Tad Malone

A DIFFERENT kind of art crowd descended on San Jose’s Seeing Things Gallery last Friday for the opening of “Concrete Thread,” a skating-influenced showcase of works by artists, illustrators and photographers—and professional skaters. Unlike the visitors at most art shows, the patrons at Concrete Thread Seeing Things donned hoodies and beanies; well-worn skateboards leaned against the Runs through Feb. 22 walls, highlighting the casual and independent Seeing Things Gallery, atmosphere of the gallery. 30 N. Third St., San Jose The show was put together with the help of one of the featured artists and legendary San Jose skater Jason Adams, a longtime friend of gallery owner Jai Tanju. Adams and Tanju requested art from around the country, including pieces by noted skaters Ray Barbee, Chet Childress, Lance Mountain and Stephan Janoski. The result is an intriguing look into the world of skateboarding through a variety of styles, including action photography and mixed-media painting.

YOUNG AND INNOCENT/SECRET AGENT (1937/1936) Part of an extensive Alfred Hitchcock retrospective at the Stanford; read a full account by Richard von Busack online at www. metroactive.com. In Young and Innocent, a ďŹ lm actress turns up dead on an English beach, throttled with the sash of a raincoat; the main suspect (Derrick De Marney) and a constable’s daughter (Nova Pilbeam) head out to ďŹ nd the real killer and the coat in question. Plenty of quaint English countryside locales; the ďŹ nale—a tracking shot across a crowded tea-dance to zero in on a drummer’s trembling eyes—is one of Hitchcock’s most memorable gimmicks. BILLED WITH Secret Agent. John Gielgud stars as the reluctant gentleman spy “Ashenden,â€? in an adventure taken from two of Somerset Maugham’s perhaps autobiographical accounts of espionage in Switzerland, 1916. “You can’t root for a hero who doesn’t want to be one,â€? Hitchcock judged in hindsight: the excellent cast (including Madeleine Carroll and Michael Redgrave) are overshadowed by Peter Lorre, who plays a Mexican professional assassin with few worries about his job. Reviews ARGO (R; 120 min.) Ben Afeck’s ďŹ lm is a comedy about the nadir of the American ’70s, the Iranian hostage crisis and the apparent impotence of our nation. Afeck plays Tony Mendez, a CIA ofďŹ cer, sent to organize the scouting of locations for a fake scienceďŹ ction movie. Six Americans who escaped the revolutionary round-up are currently hiding in the Canadian embassy in Tehran. They will be removed, disguised as crew members and writers. The ďŹ lm sees the famous “Canadian Caperâ€? as comedy. (RvB)
AMOUR (127 min, PG-13.) A serious ďŹ lm. Profound, cruel and not at all depressing, despite director Michael Haneke’s insistence on avoiding anything that euphemizes. The story follows a cultured Parisian couple as the lady of the house (Emmanuelle Riva) perishes by inches from the complications of a stroke; her elderly husband (Jean-Louis Trintignant)— who is a bit of a cold bastard—tries to preserve their dignity as a couple as situations worsen. What we see is the ďŹ nal stage of a successful love story, the end of the line. (RvB)
GANGSTER SQUAD (R; 113 min.) Josh Brolin, the star, is meant to look like Robert Ryan, but they keep shooting him in proďŹ le so you think “Dick Tracyâ€? instead. He leads a group of vigilante cops on the trail of 1940s L.A. thug Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn). As Chief Parker, Nick Nolte sounds like a laryngectomy patient. Parker reminds us of what a racially harmonious place L.A. in the 1940s was by approving this mixed-race band (including a too-sensitive Ryan Gosling, Michael PeĂąa and Anthony Mackie) to get the goods on the megalomaniac Mickey. OSCAR SHORTS Divided into three programs (Best Animated, Best Documentary and Best Live Action). Of the ďŹ ve nominees for Live Action, one is familiar to those who attended the San Jose International Short Film Festival last fall: the well-received “Asad,â€? a story of Somali refugees shot by an American ďŹ lmmaker on the coast of South Africa. Social justice scores big in the Best Documentary Short category with “Inocenteâ€? being the story of a homeless girl who hasn’t allowed the lack of an address to crush her spirits. The animation category is, as usual, very strong, but the shoe-in for the Oscar is “Paperman,â€? a wordless, Disney-made romance in a 1955 NYC cityscape. The British “Head Over Heelsâ€? is the saddest and wisest of the show: a British-made short of great imagination regarding a bitter middle-aged couple separated by an immemorial quarrel. (RvB)
SIDE EFFECTS (R; 106 min.) Stephen Soderbergh’s allegedly last movie has a witty, plausible subject—it plays on the shudders you get seeing cartoony advertisements for antidepressants. A serious crime is committed by Emily (Rooney Mara). Emily’s defense is that she cannot recall the crime because her meds made her a sleepwalker. This leaves her psychiatrist (Jude Law) legally vulnerable. Law’s skeeviness (this shrink forgets to shave) is well worked; Channing Tatum is used deftly; and Soderbergh has a ďŹ ne sense of the erotic, for making you feel you’ve seen far more than you have. Though he’s seen the trends and sonics change—his 2006 hit “Hell Yeah” was one of the high points of the midaughts hyphy movement—his modus operandi remains the same: honest, authentic lyricism. Though born in Oakland, Quincy Brooks IV, grew up in San Francisco’s Fillmore district. Along with JT the Bigga Figga, he’s one of the city’s hallmark rappers. On Feb. 16, he will travel to the South Bay to headline a show at Agenda Lounge.
Quinn’s success has come from adhering to Vallejo rapper E-40’s two H’s: remaining humble and hungry. As his Facebook artist page proves, Quinn is only a call away, still willing to link up with practically anyone looking for a verse. “It’s called ‘putting paint where it ain’t,’” Quinn muses when discussing his penchant for collaboration. “They take the music to where I’m not taking it.“ Case in point: “Paid,” his recently released collaborative single with genre-bending Panamanian duo Los Rakas. Staying true to the formula that’s made him a Bay Area mainstay, Quinn thoroughly branded the track with his signature energy and delivery. “Everybody wants to rap like they’re from down south or they have the California swag, the laid-back type flow,” he observes. “I just wanted to make sure I had a record that represented me.” “Paid” is one piece to a greater three-
stage release set to deploy in the coming months months. First comes All in the City City, a street mixtape produced exclusively by KMEL mix DJ Rick Lee, dropping Feb. 19. In April, he plans to release Cookies and Cream, a collaborative album with Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang signee (and San Francisco native) Berner. The culmination will come with the release of FTC, his studio follow-up to A Hustler’s Hope, his late 2011 collaboration with upcoming Oakland spitter Tuf Luv. Though Quinn is laying the groundwork for the run-up to his next retail release, he contends that there’s still plenty of work to be done for local hip-hop to gain the same foothold of major markets outside of California that dominate the rap game. Using Atlanta as an example, Quinn explains that cities with healthy scenes have been able to consistently churn out artists with mainstream appeal. In the case of Atlanta, there’s been plenty of turnover, from T.I. and Ludacris to more recent examples like Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame. It’s a trend that’s long overdue in the Bay Area, according to Quinn. “When I think about us on a national or international level, there ain’t nothing

bigger than E-40 or Too Short,” he points out. “I’m just ready to see us on these Top 20 weekend jams with two or three videos in the mix, not just one.” Though hip-hop fans may attribute the strength of a scene to the overall star power of its talent, its sustainability is dependent upon maintaining visibility despite turnover. That’s been a missing link in the development of the Bay Area scene. To take that next step, Quinn contends, “We need a mogul.” Why has the Bay Area struggled to gain a foothold? In addition to the lack of a sustainable local industry, Quinn links it back to nationwide misperception about the scene’s message. “They don’t really look to us for respect,” he admits. What we need is business to start taking place here.” While he hopes to see a greater infrastructure develop, Quinn has been enjoying recent success from a left-field source: Tap Tap Revenge, a touch-based mobile game similar to Dance Dance Revolution. Following the lead of his manager, he agreed to add “Paid” to the game’s song catalog. So far, the gamble has paid off. “I got 40 or 50 thousand downloads [from the game],” he says, admitting it’s forced him to do his homework. “It’s making me try and figure out what it is.” Still willing to give anything a chance, Quinn’s out there with his brush, ready to paint.

Kvitka was first contacted by Red Bull after Menace, a DJ at LIVE-105 who is a friend of hers, sent out her demo to different people he knew in the music business. The demo landed in the hands of someone at Red Bull, and they were very interested in meeting with her. Right around the same time, Anya and the Get Down won the best band award at Metro’s Silicon Valley Sound Experience, which piqued the interest of Gary Avila, who managed Papa Roach in their heyday. With Avila’s help, Anya has met with other labels as well. So far, more than one has expressed some interest, but nothing is official yet, Kvitka says.

She hopes to find a balance between catchy songwriting and her interest in going all over the map with different genres. “I definitely want to maintain as much diversity as possible, so that’s it’s not just one avenue or lane. I don’t want an avenue; I want the neighborhood,” she says. There is talk that some of the industry people and labels she’s spoken to will be coming to the Blank Club show on Feb. 15 to see her perform in a hometown environment. If all goes well, this show could be Kvitka’s last in San Jose for a while. The plan is to move to L.A. and take some time to work on making a debut album that will really represent who she is as an artist. “Whatever you release for your first album, you’re always going to be that in people’s eyes,” she says. “It’s very difficult to stray from that. Why would I put myself in this box that I won’t be able to get out of ? I kind of want to be a bridge between accessibility and left of center. That’s kind of my goal with my music and how I write. I think that’s why I gravitate toward so many different genres, because I love so much music.”—Aaron Carnes

As with so many popular beliefs, the answer boils down to: (1) this story is mostly Hollywood BS, but (2) not 100 percent. To get a better handle on things, let’s look at different permutations of the concept, starting with the least plausible and working up. Virgins have been thrown into volcanoes to appease god(s). This is the story in purest form—so pure, in fact, that I haven’t been able to find any actual examples of it. The closest I got was the 1932 film Bird of Paradise, starring Dolores del Rio as native girl Luana. Plotwise it breaks down as: boy meets girl, boy hooks up with girl, girl is betrothed to someone else, boy steals girl, boy is cursed by volcano goddess Pele, girl sacrifices self to appease Pele and save boy. Long in the public domain, the film is available for free download and worth every penny. I need to point out a couple things, though. First, while Luana’s primitive culture is perfectly willing to sacrifice her to placate the volcano god, it doesn’t actually do so. She sacrifices herself. Second, volcanoes suitable for throwing women into for the most part don’t exist. The popular idea is that a volcanic cone has a lake of molten lava inside, perhaps with a rocky promontory jutting out from the rim to provide a convenient spot for victimflinging. In reality, an erupting volcano typically spews lava up or outward from a cone, vent or fissure, after which the lava flows laterally along the flattish surfaces nearby. One could, I suppose, shove a sacrificial individual into one of these flows and thereby incinerate her (or him), but that doesn’t constitute tossing a virgin into a volcano as the trope is usually understood. Virgins have been sacrificed on, if not in, volcanoes. I’ll go out on a limb and say this is 100 percent true. The mummified remains of numerous murdered Incan children, many of them female, have been found on the upper slopes of volcanoes in the Andes. For example, a girl was discovered on Mount Ampato in Peru in 1995 and

two girls and a boy on Llullaillaco in Argentina in 1999. The victims, aged 6 to adulthood, were well dressed and nourished, suggesting they’d been fattened for the slaughter. Humans, but especially children, have been sacrificed to the gods, or to accompany deceased rulers who presumably were going to join the gods. This is so abundantly and widely true that it may not seem worth mentioning, but we ought not to let our interest in a particularly baroque sacrificial mode blind us to the larger truth, namely that our species has slaughtered innocents by the uncountable thousands since antiquity, without even the excuse of war. Examples: In the Bible, Abraham famously comes close to sacrificing his son Isaac, and Jephthah actually does kill his daughter in return for winning a war. As part of the funeral rites of the Incan ruler Huayna Capac a thousand people were sacrificed, including many children. The sacrificial cenote, a big sinkhole at the Mayan city of Chichen Itza, was found to contain the skeletons of children mostly from 7 to 15 years old. It’s guessed that the victims were selected for their beauty and freedom from blemish, signifying innocence, youth, and (temporarily) health.
