It took more than a year, but Foothill College’s independent review of allegations that DOMINIC CASERTA sexually harassed one of his students has finally come to a close. And the findings don’t look good for the disgraced poli-sci professor and former Santa Clara councilman, whose campaign for higher office was derailed last year by the same young woman who filed the complaint at Foothill. An investigation summary dated July 22 and signed by a three-member personnel panel deemed the accuser, 21-year-old German exchange student LYDIA JUNGKIND, more credible than the accused. “Most compellingly, her accounts were largely corroborated by documentary evidence including contemporaneous text messages between Ms. Jungkind and other[s] regarding the alleged incidents.” Caserta, apparently, was less convincing. “On the other hand, the witness and documentary evidence tended to refute several of Mr. Caserta’s They material representations, Did including his ‘exoneration’ What? of wrongdoing following a prior allegation of sexual SEND TIPS TO FLY@ harassment, statements METRONEWS. from witnesses that COM directly contradict Mr. Caserta’s statements, and his apparent misrepresentation to a De Anza College administrator that he had been ‘cleared’ to return to teaching (when in fact he had not),” the ruling reads. To add insult to Caserta’s self-inflicted injury, a key witness he handpicked to help his case wound up making things worse by contradicting his version of events. Ultimately, the panel convened by the Foothill-De Anza College District upheld six findings of misconduct by Caserta, including that he showered Jungkind with comments about how “hot” and “sexy” she is, thrust his crotch against her butt and, in multiple instances, couldn’t seem to keep his grubby paws off his then-19-year-old pupil and campaign aide. The DA may have cited a lack of evidence when it declined to prosecute Caserta for sexual battery last year, but at least accountability has come in other forms.

HOUGH IT TOOK the targets of the search by surprise, the seizure of cell phones, computers and electronic records was months in the making.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office served a search warrant early Friday at Sheriff Laurie Smith’s command hub as part of a hushed, drawn-out investigation into one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent and enduring local political figures. A DA spokesman confirmed the search but declined to share much more in the way of detail. “The District Attorney’s Office retrieved certain items from the Sheriff’s Office, pursuant to a search warrant signed by a Santa Clara County Superior Court judge,” DA officials replied on Friday when Metro contacted them for comment. “The retrieved items are part of an ongoing
investigation, and therefore nothing more can be said at this time.” That’s all anyone’s saying—at least on the record. Under the cloak of anonymity, sources from other wings of the county’s sprawling bureaucracy corroborated enough details to sketch a rough outline of the inquiry. It involves concealed weapons permits, a large campaign donation of uncertain origin and at least one member of the sheriff’s inner circle: Capt. James Jensen. Sheriff Smith didn’t respond to Metro’s queries about the search. Neither did Jensen, whose mobile phone went straight to voicemail. Nor her No. 2, Undersheriff Rick Sung. The sheriff’s longtime political adviser, attorney Rich Robinson, says he only learned about the search warrant in question when asked about it for this story. County Counsel James Williams had his secretary relay a “no comment.”
But sources familiar enough with the events unfolding these past few days say they’re unsurprised by the DA’s interest. “I know people do approach her for favors, for special privileges, especially during campaigns,” a veteran law enforcement official says of the career law-woman. “But she always had a protector. You know what I mean? She’d have someone else do these things for her.” Increasingly these past couple years, that’s been Jensen, who faithfully served Smith amidst his breakneck ascent from public information officer to sergeant, lieutenant and captain. Of course, when it comes time to sign for a concealed-gun authorization, the buck stops with Sheriff Smith. And this wouldn’t be the first time she’s come under fire for the way she doles out the coveted permits. While DA officials have been tightlipped about what exactly they hope to find, a study of last year’s campaign records might offer some clues. In Metro’s review of financial filings, there’s one in particular that stands out: a Form 460 prepared by a pro-Smith independent expenditure committee called the Santa Clara County Public Safety Alliance. It names Jim Campagna, SnapFi CEO and self-described “king of mortgage brokers,” as treasurer and prominent attorney Chris Schumb as assistant treasurer. The committee
First Lady In the two decades since becoming the first woman sworn in as sheriff in California, 67-year-old Laurie Smith has secured one election after another. Since her 1973 swearing-in as a deputy sheriff matron, the only position available to women at the time, the Michigan transplant rose through the ranks in a career marked by a series of firsts. As a young officer, she became the agency’s first woman to work as a full-time undercover vice cop, posing in turn as a sex worker, a junkie and a purveyor of pilfered goods. And in 1998, another first: Smith handily won the election to her current post, becoming the first woman in the agency’s 150-year history and the first in the state to don the sheriff ’s badge. Over the course of her two decades in office, Sheriff Smith has also weathered one scandal after another—the worst of which involved the 2015 brutal beating death of mentally ill inmate Michael Tyree by three jail guards. Internal unrest and public scrutiny notwithstanding, Smith has maintained power by rewarding fealty among subordinates and forging an improbable alliance with both the labor and business communities. Another factor in her durability: a perennial lack of heavyweight political challengers. Granted, last year’s race against her mild-mannered ex-second-in-charge, retired Undersheriff John Hirokawa, pushed her into a runoff for the first time ever. But Smith went on to
land an unprecedented sixth term in the November rematch despite a challenge funded by the cantankerous Deputy Sheriffs’ Association membership, which backed her opponent but whose leadership imploded amidst a texting scandal. Barely a year into Smith’s latest term, however, the cracks again are beginning to show. And some of the people closest to her seem to be caught in the fissures. It’s unclear whether the incidents are related, but authorities served the search warrant just two days after Sheriff Smith abruptly fired her confidential secretary, Jennifer Roth.
Walk it off On July 31, sources say county Human Resources Manager Christine Goodson walked up to Roth to inform her that she would be reassigned to a new job. According to sources familiar with the situation, Roth was given three reasons for her involuntary demotion: she’s unsmiling, unfriendly and refuses to make coffee. Then, she was perpwalked out the door. The confidential secretary position is unique in the county charter. Each elected or Board of Supervisors-hired official can pick whomever they choose for the position of trust. Roth didn’t return calls for comment. However, a veteran county bureaucrat who spoke on condition of anonymity called the sheriff’s handling of the demotion “severely troubling.” A similar thing happened to Amy Le just a couple months ago. On the last day of July, Le—a captain with a three-decade tenure at the Sheriff’s Office—was told to turn in her badge and escorted off the Elmwood Correctional Facility grounds, which she had overseen since her promotion from lieutenant six months prior. It was a rude awakening for the longtime Smith loyalist, who in 2018 leveraged her position as president of the Santa Clara County Correctional Peace Officers’ Association (CPOA) to campaign for the sheriff ’s re-election. As the first Vietnamese-American woman to helm the union and one of the highest-ranking female law enforcement officials in Silicon Valley, Le’s was a trophy endorsement for an embattled Smith. “I worked many, many hours to campaign for her,” says Le, who also gave some of her own money to the

reported a total fundraising haul of $85,000 from July 1 to Oct. 20 last year. About half that amount involves several $5,000-apiece donations from Schumb, personal injury law firm Corsiglia, McMahon & Allard, real estate investor Lance Tate, Nvidia co-founder Chris Malachowsky, Roem Development Corporation, All Seasons Roofing & Waterproofing, Cybersci Inc. and Valley Water board member Gary Kremen of Match.com fame. The other half of that fundraising total comes from a single donor of mysterious provenance. On Oct. 4, 2018, Martin Nielsen, who’s logged on the form as “executive protection manager” at AS Solutions, chipped in $45,000. That’s an oddly generous gift for a bodyguard, even for one who has protected at least one billionaire. Maybe the DA’s public integrity unit thought so, too.

Unions Push for Election Reform in San Jose BY GRACE HASE Just as Citizens United changed the campaign finance game on a broad scale, a local coalition of unionaligned advocacy groups hope to upend what they call a pay-to-play environment in San Jose politics. Members of Silicon Valley Rising—an advocacy nonprofit led by the South Bay Labor Council and Working Partnerships—filed a petition last week at City Hall that could limit where candidates get their campaign cash. Under the proposed rules, some forprofit developers and landlords would be prohibited from donating money to political campaigns if they submitted a project application, owned or managed a certain number of rental units or participated in a bid involving more than $250,000 of city funds within the prior two years. Their lobbyists and special interest groups would also be banned from donating. The initiative would also shift the
city’s mayoral election, aligning it with the presidential election year starting in 2024. San Jose’s current mayor, Sam Liccardo, terms out in 2022, which would set up his successor for a twoyear term. Advocates for the measure argue that the realignment would up voter turnout in mayoral elections, citing data that show participation peaks in presidential election years. If the petition tops 70,000 signatures, it would make its way to the City Council for outright approval or placement on the November 2020 ballot. But critics of the move say labor groups backing the measure as a way to crack down on special interests are displaying a curious lack of self-awareness. “It is ironic that this proposed ballot measure that seeks to remove special interest money out of local politics, conveniently exempts other special interest groups such as labor unions from the
same standard,” said Matt Mahood, president of the Silicon Valley Organization (SVO), the region’s pre-eminent chamber of commerce. “Labor unions must be held to the same standard if we are to advance any meaningful campaign reform.” Konda, however, reassured critics that it wasn’t barring developers from the entire political process; they would still be able to donate to independent expenditure committees. But Liccardo said that there needs to be one set of rules for everyone. “The notion that an owner of a daycare center or yoga studio cannot support the candidate of their choice but the NRA or South Bay Labor Council can seems patently unfair to me,” he said. “Particularly when one of those later groups may be pushing to impose hundreds of millions of dollars of costs on taxpayers for pensions, for example.”

campaign. “Emotionally, I supported her. I took a lot of heat, too, from people calling me a kiss-ass and all that. But I thought that she was a better candidate at the time because she’s female and fought hard to get to where she is, and I could relate to that. I am the only Vietnamese female to rise up to sergeant, lieutenant and captain, and I know the struggles women face, and I thought she understood that, too.” After showing her allegiance, Le secured a promotion. Joining the top brass meant relinquishing union membership, but she says she welcomed the tradeoff. In her new post, presiding over Elmwood, Le says she tried to improve conditions for female staff and the incarcerated women under their watch. She saw a gazebo whose construction she initiated as an expression of that effort. Absent county funding for a rest area she called the “gratitude garden,” Le collected private donations: $6,000 from her correctional officer husband, $2,500 from her former union and $500 each from a CPOA lawyer, a lieutenant and a deputy. Female inmates who voluntarily built the structure learned valuable vocational skills, Le says, and took pride in their work. Sheriff Smith and her command staff were less thrilled about the project. On May 31, Sheriff’s officials placed Le on paid leave. A week later, Le received a letter with another charge: that she ordered a jail employee to delete files on a work computer. Le says the experience shook her. On June 12, she gave up on arbitration by retiring, which lifted privacy restrictions that silenced her side of the story. Le, who’s now mulling legal action, says she’s shocked to hear about Roth’s treatment. With a criminal investigation into the department’s upper echelons now apparently underway and the county’s two elected law enforcement officials on opposite sides of a battle of titans, another shoe may soon drop. Given the secrecy around the probe, it could be a big one.

TRAVELS WITH MUMFORD Folk-pop superstars Mumford & Sons are this year’s recipients of SJSU’s annual Steinbeck Award.
NOVEL HONOR Band’s repertoire has strong links to Steinbeck’s body of work BY GARY SINGH

OHN STEINBECK is bigger than any radius clause. When British folk-pop superstars Mumford & Sons receive SJSU’s annual Steinbeck Award on Sept. 18 in a celebration at Stanford’s Bing Concert Hall, the event will not conflict with their arena gig the following night in San Francisco. Many threads have converged to bring Mumford & Sons to Stanford University. In the fall of 1919, when John Steinbeck was 17 years old, he
began a six-year period of in-and-out enrollment at Stanford. He dropped out and returned several times, never caring to complete a degree. Since this year marks the centennial of when he first showed up, the Steinbeck Center at SJSU is partnering with Stanford on numerous fronts. Each year the Steinbeck Center presents the illustrious Steinbeck Award, celebrating musicians, writers, documentarians, thinkers, artists and activists whose work embodies the empathetic spirit and values of John Steinbeck. The award is a large affair, usually presented in an auditorium or theater venue. Previous recipients
include Bruce Springsteen, Rachel Maddow, John Mellencamp, Ruby Bridges and Ken Burns. This year the award goes to Mumford & Sons not just because they’ve written songs inspired by Steinbeck but also because they’ve demonstrated a serious commitment to social engagement through their Gentlemen of the Road project, a charitable fund they founded in 2006 to support global and local charities fighting for social justice. Tickets go on sale this Friday for the Sept. 18 award ceremony at Bing, which includes a conversation with the band members as well as an acoustic performance. “We’ve been tracking Mumford & Sons for some time now, starting with their Railroad Revival Tour,” said Ted Cady, who previously booked SJSU’s Event Center for decades before retiring to become the Steinbeck Center’s senior curator of events. “From our perspective, that tour seemed like a truncated version of Travels with Charley, only with musicians on a train, sweeping from California to New Orleans, and all the country between.”
Steinbeck likewise sweeps all through the Mumford & Sons repertoire. East of Eden appears in their song “Timshel,” while The Grapes of Wrath inspired their tunes, “Dust Bowl Dance,” and “Rose of Sharon.” They also do a haunting rendition of Springsteen’s “The Ghost of Tom Joad.” And when the band’s 2012 smalltown tour brought them straight into the heart of Steinbeck country, band members Ted Dwane and Marcus Mumford took part in a panel discussion in Monterey led by Marcus’ older brother, the scholar-philosopher James Mumford. They also performed at a Steinbeck tribute concert. On the night following the Stanford gig, Mumford & Sons play the shiny new upmarket Chase Center in San Francisco, which would normally trigger promoters to implement a radius clause destroying any competing gig in Santa Clara County, but that didn’t happen. Steinbeck would have despised such vile behavior, so maybe it was his ghost looking out for the South Bay. In any case, the band has a longstanding history with Steinbeck’s material. “They’re super familiar with Steinbeck’s work,” said Steinbeck Center Director Nick Taylor. “And they’re on the young side for recipients of the Steinbeck Award, but I would say that they’re as familiar, or more familiar, with Steinbeck than any previous recipient. I would never suggest that anyone knows more than Ken Burns about anything, but for rock stars, they sure are literary.” It doesn’t stop there. Thanks to a few years’ worth of conversations between Taylor and Stanford English Prof. Gavin Jones, proceeds from the Mumford & Sons award gig will help support a new project, the Steinbeck Service Fellowship. Since both universities teach a class devoted entirely to Steinbeck’s work and since students therefore study the same material and the same criticism, SJSU students will be able to collaborate with Stanford students to devise their own service projects inspired by Steinbeck’s work, all to continue his legacy for compassionate community engagement. One hundred years after Steinbeck walked into a classroom at Stanford, his legacy remains intact and stronger than ever. New generations are picking up where he left off.

N THE SUMMER of 1990, local music impresario Bruce Labadie set up a stage at Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park and invited a handful of jazz heavyweights—including Bobby Hutcherson, Hugh Masekela and Freddie Hubbard—to perform outdoors at the first ever San Jose Jazz Festival. Rechristened the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, the annual party marks its 30th anniversary this weekend with an eclectic lineup of more than 100 performers playing on a dozen stages over the course of three days. With free stages and exclusive VIP packages to a variety of acts—from jazz traditionalists to cutting-edge, genre-blurring performers—there’s a little something for everyone at this year’s Summer Fest. Music lovers can catch performances at Plaza de Cesar Chavez, Post Street, the Hammer Theatre Center, Café Stritch, the Tabard Theatre and elsewhere. Some of the bigger names this weekend include Dianne Reeves, Love Train hitmakers the O’Jays and San Jose native, Peanut Butter Wolf. In addition to the standard-bearers and the boundary pushers, there will be plenty of big-band, Latin jazz, New Orleans-style, blues and R&B. Read on to learn about many of this year’s performers and get a taste of what’s to come this weekend.

Akira Tana & Otonawa Fri, 6pm Cafe Stritch Framing the rich cultural roots of their shared Japanese heritage, veteran drummer Akira Tana’s Otonawa quintet reimagines traditional Japanese folk songs in a modern jazz context. Alongside Tana, pianist Art Hirahara, bassist Noriyuki “Ken” Okada and woodwinds multi-instrumentalist Masaru Koga first came together for a benefit concert dedicated to the victims of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Northern Japan.
Otonawa—meaning “sound circle” in Japanese—recorded a self-titled album and later toured Japan, bringing their blend of Japanese and African American musical traditions to affected communities.

HRIS MANAK STILL regrets not signing jazz saxophonist and composer Kamasi Washington. Manak, better known by his DJ and producer handle Peanut Butter Wolf, had contemplated bringing the tenor saxophone prodigy onto his tastemaking label— the weirdo hip-hop and future funk-championing Stones Throw Records—but hesitated.
“I was sitting on his demo and wanted to sign him,” Manak recalls, “but I had put out a lot of jazz albums with Madlib—under the name of Yesterday’s New Quintet—which never did too well. I always felt bad about that. It got to a point where I decided not to put out anymore jazz music, because I felt like it would just be a disservice to the artists.” Perhaps Manak should have gone with his gut. In May of 2015, Washington turned heads with his massive major-label debut, The Epic, drawing the attention of pop music critics

His orchestra has recorded original suites and oratorios paying tribute to the legacy of cultural icons like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Hariett Tubman. He will be accompanied by vocalist Tiffany Austin.
Marquis Hill Blacktet Fri, 8:30pm Cafe Stritch Breaking down the boundaries between jazz, hip-hop and neosoul is Marquis Hill’s specialty. Hailing from Chicago’s South Side, Hill’s artistry reflects the evershifting cultural continuum of African American music. His latest album, Modern Flows, Vol. 2, spreads spacey horn arrangements and bop flourishes on top of boom bap-derived drum beats. It’s all sewn together with spoken word verses focused on the black experience in America. Hill capped his 2014 victory at the Thelonious Monk Institute Competition with his 2016 album, The Way We Play. Hill’s group, the Blacktet, includes rising stars like Joel Ross, Braxton Cook and Jeremiah Hunt. Gregory Porter
Aneesa Strings Sat, Noon Jazz Beyond Stage With a silky approach to R&B songwriting and both feet firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, Oakland-born bassist and vocalist Aneesa Strings honed her talents in the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars. Her debut album, A Shift in Paradigm, was produced by keyboardist and R&B vocalist Patrice Rushen, and their collaboration reveals many similarities in style. A Shift in Paradigm features soulful melodies, lush horn arrangements and colorful harmonies.
Dahveed Behroozi Trio Sat, 1pm Adobe Silicon Valley Stage A jazz educator at San Jose State University and Gavilan College, hometown hero Dahveed Behroozi is one of the Bay Area’s leading jazz pianists. Studying under Fred Hersch at Manhattan School of Music, Behroozi drew inspiration from Romantic classical music while developing his style. Colorful and highly expressive, Behroozi’s lyrical playing on his 2012 trio album Games evokes compelling emotional hues. Tracks like “The Barnhills” and “Nightwatch” reveal traces of Chopin, Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans in their poignancy and impressionistic harmonic palette.

DOMi and JD Beck Sat, 4pm Jazz Beyond Stage French pianist DOMi, 19, and Texan drummer JD Beck, 16, make up this virtuosic duo. Despite their youth, the two are currently touring across the US and France, and have collaborated with forward-thinking artists like Jon Bap, Anna Wise and Thundercat. The duo’s breakneck sound is raw and technically stunning: JD’s hypnotizing hip-hop backbeats dance with DOMi’s soaring post-bop lines, drawing equally from the legacy of hip-hop innovator J Dilla as well as Chick Corea.

The same year, Kendrick Lamar dropped his 2015 jazz-laden opus, To Pimp A Butterfly. Seasoned genre-melders like Robert Glasper, Thundercat, Terrace Martin, Washington and Flying Lotus were all instrumental in the realization of Lamar’s project. The album was a critical success, winning a Grammy for Best Rap Album, cementing Lamar’s reputation and refocusing an international spotlight on the vibrant cross pollination that has always existed between America’s hip-hop, jazz and funk scenes. In 2014, the avant garde electronic producer Flying Lotus—who once served as an intern at Stones Throw—brought Herbie Hancock, Thundercat, Lamar and Washington together on his project, You’re Dead! Manak, who grew up on San Jose’s
East Side and attended Piedmont Hills High School, performed at San Jose Jazz Summer Fest in 2014. That same year, the festival hosted a screening of Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton, a documentary about Stones Throw Records. The success of Washington, Lamar, Flying Lotus, Thundercat and all their contemporaries served to vindicate Manak’s instincts. Since the foundation of Stones Throw Records in 1996, Manak has staked his reputation to his curatorial expertise. It’s a talent he’s honed over decades spinning deep cuts and amassing a catalog of some of the most forwardthinking artists ever to lay music to wax. It’s a reputation he’ll defend this Saturday with a late-night DJ set at the annual SJZ Summer Fest.
ALL THAT JAZZ This summer marks the 30th anniversary of San Jose Jazz’s annual

fête, and Manak will once again take to the ones and twos, spinning up a set of choice selections at the Jazz Beyond Stage on Post Street—where many more boundary-bending artists will also explore the borders of America’s indigenous art form. Manak oversees a diverse roster of artists at his independent record label, headquartered in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. The Stones Throw offices sit above his newly opened vinyl-oriented watering hole, Gold Line Bar. Stones Throw’s highly eclectic catalog makes it one of the most respected boutique labels on the West Coast. And while a cursory review of Manak’s roster may read as somewhat scattered, there is a certain consistency within the chaotic crew of creatives who have called Stones Throw home over the years. “There’s always been a lot of jazz influence at the label,'' says Manak, referencing underground OGs of the
alternative hip-hop movement like MF Doom, Madlib, Ras G and J Dilla. These are the master samplers, cratedigging savants and oddball emcees who’ve influenced an abundance of contemporary producers— including Stones Throw labelmates such as trippy, beat-making virtuoso Knxwledge. Through their encyclopedic knowledge of jazz and sprawling vinyl collections, these innovators helped Manak define the contours of the label’s aesthetic. Take, for example, The Unseen, by Quasimoto, the alter-ego of Stones Throw producer and emcee Madlib. The 2000 album’s third track, “Microphone Mathematics,” samples a live recording of Thelonious Monk’s “Pannonica,” a languid ballad reminiscent of a nursery rhyme, captured during a 1959 solo concert in San Francisco. This choice needle drop is followed by another great cut, from Blue Note Records trumpeter Don Cherry. The rest of the track, like the rest of the album, is steeped in hazy vignettes of jazz samples and lyrical references to heroes of the genre. “Jazz Cats Pt. 1” name-checks Sun Ra, Dizzy Gillespie and Gary Bartz, among others. “There’s plenty more I could name,” Madlib raps in his Lord Quas disguise, “but y’all won’t put them to good use.”
FUTURE FUNK The label’s newer acts are of a slightly different breed. Recent recruits such as Mndsgn and Kiefer are seriously talented keyboardists with a deep knowledge of the musical lexicon of influencers like Monk or Ahmad Jamal. Manak’s latest addition, 20-year old prodigy Jamael Dean, is also a promising jazz pianist. Alongside their technical skill, Kiefer and Mndsgn are masters of hip-hop production techniques like sampling, pitch-shifting vocals and drum machine wizardry. The two have been known to track their performances live, then chop up the recordings to mimic the feel of a sample. By running their recordings through a

Jazz piano grandmaster Fred Hersch is a legendary figure in the jazz pantheon. Since emerging from the New York City scene of the 1970s as a sideman for icons like Art Farmer, Hersch has gone on to define the sound of contemporary jazz piano. Recognized for his supple virtuosity, Hersch has also garnered acclaim for original compositions like Leaves of Grass, a setting of Walt Whitman’s poetry for an octet and two voices. On top of that, Hersch’s mentorship of contemporary pianists—wizards like Brad Mehldau, Sullivan Fortner and Gerald Clayton—has solidified his influence on today’s musical landscape.
Shabaka Hutchins, the fiery saxophonist and composer leading Sons of Kemet, takes diverse musical cues from free jazz, dub and Afrobeat. This politically charged jazz supergroup based in the UK generated considerable buzz with their 2018 album, Your Queen is a Reptile, which pays tribute to influential black women throughout history while challenging British cultural conventions. Tracks from the album, like “My Queen is Angela Davis,” present an alternate royal family fleshed out in the group’s eclectic instrumentation: Hutchins on sax, Theon Cross on tuba, and Seb Rochford and Tom Skinner on drums and percussion.
Gregory Porter carries on the lineage of late 20th-century singers like Nat King Cole and Johnny Hartman, while deftly setting a new standard for vocal jazz. His 2010 debut, Water, highlights Porter’s rich tone and superb lyrical interpretation of Great American Songbook classics, such as “Skylark” and “But Beautiful.” Later works, like his Grammy-winning 2016 project, Take Me To The Alley, dip into a wavy R&B-inflected sound. Backed by acclaimed instrumentalists like tenor saxophonist Tivon Pennicott and trumpeter Keyon Harrold, Porter draws on the raw honesty of the blues and gospel.
This jazz drummer, producer, DJ and emcee deftly evades categorization. After graduating from Oberlin Conservatory, Overall was a member of pianist Geri Allen’s Timeline project, and has performed with Christian McBride, Vijay Iyer and Gary Bartz. As a rapper and producer, he’s collaborated with Bay Areaborn rapper Kool A.D. His latest project, Go Get Ice Cream and Listen To Jazz, showcases Overall’s unfettered creativity: He layers 808s, his own vocals, his own rapping and choppedup samples of his own live drumming alongside the contributions of pianist Sullivan Fortner and trumpet legend Roy Hargrove.

Returning to San Jose for her fourth appearance at the Summer Fest, NEA Jazz Master and five-time Grammy winner Dianne Reeves ranks alongside Dinah Washington and Carmen McRae as one of the most accomplished and critically acclaimed jazz vocalists of all time. Reeves has collaborated with artists like Billy Childs, Lenny White and Airto Moreira. Her stylistic versatility seamlessly moves between quartet and orchestral settings on jazz standards and R&B-influenced compositions alike. Reeves was also behind the Grammy-winning soundtrack for George Clooney’s 2005 film, Good Night, and Good Luck.
SJZ’s support of jazz education continues at the SummerFest, showcasing high school bands from SJZ’s own education programs like the High School All Stars Combo and the Summer Camp Combo, as well Monterey Jazz Festival’s High School All-Stars. Shining a light on some of the most promising young musicians in the South Bay, the Next Gen Stage provides exposure to these aspiring performers.

variety of filters, overlaying different patches and slicing up their own playing, they are effectively blurring the line between sample-based and live instrumental music. Karriem Riggins, a jazz drummer, producer, emcee and original Stones Throw heavyweight, is a pioneer of this production method. Riggins, 43, started his career as a jazzman, playing with musicians like Mulgrew Miller and Roy Hargrove. As a producer, he was a frequent collaborator with fellow Detroit native J Dilla, appearing on three of his albums, and has also worked with Common, Erykah Badu and Kaytranada. Notably, he produced Kanye West’s “30 Hours,” from The Life Of Pablo. Riggins’ 2017 project, Headnod Suite, is composed of tracks like “Bahia Dreamin’,” which fluidly transitions from 808 backbeats into an acoustic trio setting, with live keys, upright bass, and Riggins himself on the drumset riffing beneath classic Slum Village samples. “He’s a unique one—I signed him and Madlib as rappers together,” Manak says of the musical Renaissance man, adding that nowadays Riggins has primarily been drumming for Canadian pianist and jazz singer Diana Krall. Go figure. Manak’s crew of genre-defying artists have always drawn on cues from jazz, hip-hop and funk—musical idioms that FM radio and the Billboard charts have often segregated, but which in reality lie along the same cultural continuum. This junction of genres is hardly a recent development. On the East Coast, veteran jazz pianist Robert Glasper has been covering J Dilla beats in his trio setting since the early 2000s, working with the likes of Erykah Badu, Bilal, Q-Tip and the Roots. In 2017, Glasper headlined at the SJZ Summer Fest, which has recently been a sanctuary for fellow boundary breakers like Kamasi Washington. Stones Throw artists have also maintained a presence at the Summer Fest, with Knxwledge and Riggins both making appearances at the festival. Manak is well aware of SJZ’s patronage of Stones Throw
15 artists, and it’s put future prospects on his mind. “In the future, I’d like to secure a Stones Throw stage,” Manak says about the Summer Fest. “There’s just so much jazz talent at the label right now, I think that would be the next step.”
SIP & SPIN Speaking of next steps, Manak’s newest venture—the Gold Line Bar—has been generating quite a buzz. Eater Los Angeles and Los Angeles Magazine recently profiled the drinking establishment, which opened in late 2018 and pairs highfidelity analog audio equipment with craft cocktails. Located in the same building as the Stones Throw headquarters, Gold Line is styled after the Japan’s “hi-fi bars,” where patrons are encouraged to kick back and listen to deep cuts over top-shelf spirits. LA restaurateur Tyler Bell, co-owner of L&E Oyster Bar and El Condor in Silver Lake, curates the cocktail menu, and they don’t serve food. What Gold Line lacks in small bites it makes up for with quality tunes. The bar is equipped with a vintage analog stereo system and its walls are home to more than 9,000 records from Manak’s personal collection. Barkeeps and guest DJs make the selections. “It’s the first vinyl bar in the US with a record collection that large,” Manak says, proud to have a leg up over other Los Angeles vinyl bars, like The Semi-Tropic in Echo Park and In Sheep’s Clothing downtown. “It’s not really traditional DJing, where you have to beat match. No turntables and scratching or anything like that; it’s more about selecting music and creating a vibe. For me, it’s really just all about the music.”

A
THRONG OF people snakes around the interior of the Valley Fair Mall, waiting in a line that’s well-over over 90 minutes long. What could they possibly be waiting for? A celebrity autograph? The latest gadget from Apple? The answer, as it turns out, is ramen. The brainchild of Satoshi Ikuta, the award-winning Ramen Nagi recently opened its second US location in the Santa Clara shopping center. Ikuta, the son of a gas worker and a nurse, never had aspirations of becoming a famous chef. However, as a young man, he fell in love with the
high-intensity, team-driven nature of kitchen work—and after a visit to New York a year after 9/11, he was inspired to strike out on his own. “Even after a crisis like that, I saw that people were making good food from all over, and I wanted to join in,” Ikuta says, through a translator. “And not just in Japan, but all over the world.” Upon returning home he realized he didn’t have the money to start his own business. So he began the practice of aida kari, borrowing space at a small food station in the bustling Hakata-ku ward of Fukuoka, Japan. It was here that he began honing his craft and developing his signature flavors. “I got a lot of feedback while running my bar from customers,” he says. “They
would say I want the chashu (roast pork) bigger, or I want my soup thicker.” Ikuta listened. Soon his adjustments and hard work led to a big win in a Tokyo ramen contest, which won him a spot in Tokyo’s famed Tachikawa Ramen Square noodle theme park. He opened his first restaurant in 2004 at the age of 27. Ikuta now has 35 restaurants all over the world, but his sole American storefronts are located here in Silicon Valley. He opened his first U.S. location in Palo Alto last June; the Valley Fair restaurant opened in December. South Bay ramen fans have definitely taken notice, as both restaurants sport a 4.5-star average on Yelp, and Nagi took second in the 2019 Metro “Best of Silicon Valley” reader’s poll; the Michelin Platerated Orenchi Ramen took first. Nagi’s known for their Hakatastyle ramen, which is renowned for being served quickly and simply. Their standard ramen, dubbed the “original king,” features a rich, 20hour slow-simmered tonkotsu (pork bone) broth, noodles that are made daily in-house, and a few slices of melt-in-mouth chashu. This simple base provides a great platform for building out flavors, as
Nagi has branched out to include a squid ink, pesto and a spicy chili ramen, aptly named the black, green and red kings, respectively. Ikuta has also developed a vegetarian ramen (veggie king), specifically for the US market. It includes a puréed, roasted cauliflower base, shiitake mushrooms and a potato hashbrown “chashu” cutlet that was inspired by Ikuta’s visits to American diners. He is currently working on developing a vegan broth, as the veggie king does include milk in its base. The word “nagi” means calm, but the restaurant itself is anything but serene. A swarm of well-trained staff buzz around in red shirts and yellow bandannas, delivering food and making sure diner’s needs are met, while a mix of Japanese heavy metal and pop songs pulsates over the restaurant’s sound system. The goal is to get patrons seated, fed and on their way as quickly as possible—another hallmark of Hakata ramen bars. While this may sound a bit harried, I never felt rushed. It was more like a well-organized dance routine. The ramen itself is spectacular. The pork broth is rich and has just the right balance of unctuous porky flavor, salt and a milky creaminess. They are also generous with the noodles. Hakata ramen is known for its thin noodles, which can be cooked quickly, but Nagi has a thicker option for a more robust noodle experience. After I had finished my interview and meal, I began to walk back to my car when I was surprised to see Ikuta chase me down with his translator. He seemed genuinely interested in whether I had enjoyed my ramen. I noticed that the line was still going strong, though I had been there for at least two hours. I asked him what he thinks when he sees that many people waiting for so long to eat his ramen. “When I first opened up my shops, I was lucky to have two or three people a day,” he said, his eyes lighting up and his smile widening. “And now—this is unbelievable. Because I started from nothing and I fear that could still happen. So I am very thankful.”

When it comes to musical biopics, few films loom larger than Amadeus. The 1984 Academy Award-winning film made a rock star of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart—one of the most talented composers of the Classical period (between the Baroque and Romantic periods). Painting Mozart as an eccentric and irreverent genius, the film weaves together elements of palace intrigue, jealousy and revenge into a fictionalized history of the Austrian musician. Eddie Griffin’s career began with a dare. The 51-year-old comic’s cousin challenged him give standup a try at the Sanford and Sons comedy club in Kansas City. What started as a lark morphed into a 45-minute improv set, and Griffin’s been hooked on the art of cracking wise ever since. The Missouri-raised Griffin is known for Malcolm & Eddie, Scary Movie 3 and recently as the pastor who married Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in A Star Is Born. At a show in 2017, he expressed vexation at white people’s love of adventure tourism and creepy crawly creatures. “Don’t fuck with nothin’ that got more legs than us!” (ER)
It’s been 75 years since Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy in June of 1944. A year later, in August 1945, Japan declared its intent to surrender. History Park commemorates the end of World War II this weekend with two days of 1940s-themed fanfare. Friday is swing night, featuring the brassy reverie and splashing percussion of San Jose big band The Swing Solution. The old-timey tunes return on Saturday, along with plenty of old-fashioned fun including a period-appropriate fashion show, car show and recreation of a WWII homecoming parade. With their unique synthesis of musical forms from the Americas—everything from rock & roll to cumbia to zydeco—Los Lobos are an American treasure. The East LA-based group has long been a favorite of critics. Rolling Stone ranked Los Lobos’ third album, 1984’s How Will the Wolf Survive?, at No. 30 on its list of the greatest albums of that decade. And 1992’s Kiko is perhaps even more highly regarded, earning near-unanimous critical acclaim. The group continues to earn awards and recognition. Their most recent release is 2015’s Gates of Gold. They’re joined at the Mountain Winery by Los Lonely Boys. (BK)
One of the oddest and most transgressive bands America ever produced came out of the South. Go figure. This group of Athens, Georgia, weirdos broke onto the scene in 1978 with “Rock Lobster”—following it up with a bevy of big hits, including “Love Shack” and “Private Idaho.” At first blush, their debut single sounds like a dadaist mash-up of surfrock tropes, post-punk yawps, new wave synths and doo-wop cooing. But listen closer and you’ll hear the gender-bending themes hiding beneath the beehives. In retrospect it’s clear: “boys in bikinis, girls with surfboards”is a not-so-subtle dig at the toxic machismo of late-’70s surf culture. (MS)

These hip-hop and R&B superstars first collaborated on their 1997 single “Love is All We Need,” topping the charts with wholesome verses sung by Blige in her trademark soulful tone. The duo linked up earlier this year on another single, “Thriving,” to announce their co-headlining summer “Royalty Tour.” Their vastly influential careers began in the ’90s, with legendary albums like Nas’ Illmatic and Blige’s What’s the 411? OVERLOAD A generation’s worth of toxic masculinity and aggressive value signaling converge in Tracey Snelling’s new installment.
Seeing Red The American psyche is laid bare in SJICA’s immersive ‘Clusterf*ck’ BY JEFFREY EDALATPOUR

OP CULTURAL ARTIFACTS and ephemera invade every visible corner of Tracey Snelling’s immersive work, Clusterfuck 9. Shades of red stain drip and creep along the walls, which are also covered with collaged imagery of TV, film and rock stars. Pages cut out from tabloid journals feature pinup girls with glossy lips in various states of undress. The artist intensifies the fever and fury of Hollywood by adding splashes of spray paint, glowing neon, video monitors and gushing, viscous tears.
At the center of this maelstrom, Snelling places a red leather sofa to up the ante on how much saturation the eyes can take. This is a hellscape made from an everyman’s day of mindless media consumption. Once you step inside, you’re completely caught up in Snelling’s restless imagination. In an email exchange from her studio in Berlin, Snelling discussed the origins of the Clusterfuck project. “I started out as a photographer, but was always interested in experimenting— painting on the photo, adding threedimensional elements, taping the negatives and scratching them, among other alterations,” she writes. Eventually she moved into sculpture, adding
sound, light, video, water pumps, and sometimes motors and pulleys. Snelling constructed the first of her Clusterfuck series in 201. “It was in the entryway of the Oakland City Hall, and contained many sculptures of mine, combined with posters, signs, lights and souvenirs representing many cultures.” When you scan the gallery, that juxtaposition of cultures is a visceral presence. A movie poster of The Killing Fields is pasted above a video promotion still of Lilith’s Night Out. They’re adjacent to a barrage of other images, including Bruce Lee kicking in mid-air and the Scorpions’ album cover “Blackout,” featuring a man in a straitjacket with forks in his eyes. The amount of collected aggression on display is alarming. As filtered through decades of pop cultural detritus, Snelling’s visual references wrestle with the idea of toxic masculinity. When she was working on this particular Clusterfuck, she “was focused on total immersion through visuals and sound, addressing modern popular culture and the overwhelming and unusual aspects of it, and looking at the politics of today, such as the mass shootings and gun issues in the US and the war on women, especially now.”
On Snelling’s website she writes, “Walking down the street at night, I look at the lit windows of the homes I pass, and wonder what is taking place behind that drawn curtain.” She often imagines that it’s something “mysterious, strange or unusual.” Clusterfuck 9 doesn’t take place in some peaceful suburban setting. It depicts the American psyche as a disordered thing that’s suffering and in distress. Bleeding eyes are a recurring motif that Snelling says just happens intuitively. “In hindsight, the eyes and red paint reference the horror that’s going on today. It’s actually surprising that I don’t just paint the whole room red…” On the exhibit’s opening night, Snelling arranged a performance that now plays on the TV set in the center of the installation. “It shows a husband and wife (Lee Anne Payne and Chris Reber) in ‘traditional’ roles, slowly breaking down into chaos,” Snelling says. It’s no surprise then that film noir—featuring people who follow their most desperate impulses—has influenced her work. ”I've always been attracted to the tarnished characters and edgy stories. David Lynch is one of my favorite modern-day film noir directors. Touch of Evil and Double Indemnity are two of my favorites, along with U-Turn and Blood Simple.” But growing up, she also remembers repeatedly checking out books by Hieronymous Bosch and Albrecht Dürer from the library. “Other works, predominantly my sculptural work, are more introspective and voyeuristic,” she adds. “With the Clusterfuck installations, especially Clusterfuck 9, the introspection is turned inside out. ” In this topsy turvy realm, the artist unites Ozzy Osbourne, as he salutes the devil, with a bare-chested Vladimir Putin riding a bear, and a handsome Jesus surrounded by his many disciples. The host of associations could devolve into an incomplete thought or a mess of conflicting reds. But for Snelling, she understood when it was time to stop. “One just knows when a work is finished.”

IN FLAMES A new documentary about the Cambridge Analytica scandal opens at Burning Man.
Scrape Goats ‘The Great Hack’ explores how the power of suggestion swung voters in 2016 BY RICHARD VON BUSACK
T
HE HORRIFYING documentary The Great Hack opens with a pink-haired young lady named Brittany Kaiser, one of the thousands on the Playa at Burning Man, using a marker to write the words “Cambridge Analytica” on a wooden structure. It’s not explained, but I’ll do it. She is at the Temple, which is burned the day after the Man. You tour it and see messages
begging forgiveness, letters to the dead, tokens of lethal diseases survived. Kaiser’s two words are a gesture of apology for her time at CA. She is at times as enigmatic as Elizabeth Holmes, and despite her denial, potentially the conduit between Wikileaks and the Trump campaign. Sometimes you end up swearing at the screen because of her purblindness. Admittedly directors Karim Amer and Jehan Noujaim try to make this political turncoat more mysterious, by concealing her back story until the end of the film. Kaiser went from Obama intern to snuggling with Kellyanne
Conway. No matter what Kaiser’s loyalties are, she ultimately did her part to shift the 70,000 voters in three states who decided the 2016 election. The CA scandal is now well known—how a British company, funded with help from Steve Bannon, sold data to political parties, helping to bugger elections around the globe through disinformation campaigns and inflammatory social media. Trump’s “Project Alamo” spent $1 million a day on Facebook ads aimed at handpicked voters. Neither the “deplorables” or the “despicables” decided the election; it was swingstate “persuadables”—targeted with the help of data mined or scraped from social media—who were then inundated with cascades of grandpainfuriating hot-button advertising. A gangster under arrest always claims he was just providing a service, and yet one never wants to be in the position of having to deny that their company is a James Bond villain, as former COO Julian Wheatland does here. Alexander Nix, Kaiser’s mentor
and CA’s former CEO, blames the folding of his company and its legal woes on the liberal media. Two working tirelessly on the case were the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Carole Cadwalladr of the Guardian and Parsons School of Design Prof. David Carroll; the professor hired a British solicitor to try with all futility to find out what the harvesters had gleaned. If the filmmakers partisan sympathies are clear, so is the imminent threat. Facebook, the most culpable in this digital surveilling, declared they were taking steps to protect data. We saw this when what appeared to be a Mark Zuckerberg robot visited the Senate in April 2018. But the manipulators are ready and will be at work in 2020. I urge all to watch The Great Hack, and beware.
