CONTRACTORS ARE PUTTING THE FINISHING TOUCHES ON WHOLE FOODS

Management group visits site, just weeks ahead of opening day

Drew Penner, Editor

Last Wednesday, a management group from Whole Foods Market visited the Los Gatos Boulevard site of their nearly-finished store to check on construction progress, just hours after Amazon Grocery Communications announced it would open April 15.

Around noon, one contractor sought sign-off on the location for safes. Another couple workers were in the middle of moving a sink.

“It’s coming along nicely,” Bob Gordon, a construction project manager for Whole Foods told the Los Gatan in a brief interview at the Los Gatos location. “We’re excited about finishing up and opening to the public.”

E2S Building Performance had good news for him. Their infrastructure efficiency review indicated the structure was coming along swimmingly, though the company officials hinted this had followed some earlier updates that were more negative.

Just a few months back, Tesla opened a dealership and service center next door. And there’s been plenty of speculation in recent months about the scope of the Jeff Bezos-owned neighboring facility.

Well, now we know.

According to a spokesperson, the Los Gatos location will feature a coffee and juice bar, and ➝ Whole Foods, 16

THERE’S NO CONTROLLING SKATEBOARD CULTURE

NC Boardshop is is celebrating 40 years in business

Faizi Samadani, Contributor

This year marks 40 years since NC Boardshop first landed in Los Gatos. They’ve moved four times since their doors first opened in 1986. Their current spot at 16203 Los Gatos Blvd. has been their longest lease to date, says co-owner Mike Allen.

They’re in the process of planning a big celebration for their anniversary—as, after all, staying afloat for 40 years would be a major accomplishment for any company.

But it’s a particularly big milestone for a skateboard retailer, given the industry was considered somewhat of a trend that could flare-out, back when they started.

Allen says, despite the successive waves of industry turbu-

lence reaching the highest crest in the 1990s, NC has managed to find a way to continue existing—and thriving—thanks in part to the defiant nature of the target market they serve.

NC Boardshop was originally named No Control, before they went for the abbreviation.

Allen began skating in 1985.

“I just wanted to skate, skate, skate,” he said of his early years. “I had a job, and was

FAMILY OF THREE DISPLACED BY SUNDAY FIRE

A family of three has been displaced by a house fire on the 300 block of Bachman Avenue of Los Gatos that was reported at 1:02 pm Sunday.

By the time firefighters arrived, it had already grown to become “fully involved”, according to a spokesperson for the Santa Clara County Fire Department, who noted “a second alarm was called at 1:15PM.”

No injuries have been reported.

The cause is currently under investigation.

“The fire has been contained to (the) building of origin but not yet declared under control,” SCCFD said on its Facebook page around 3pm. “Please avoid the area.”

By that point, Pacific Gas and Electric Company and Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department were on scene, too.

According to Josh Ojeda, of Giuliani Construction & Restoration, the fire was out by 4:30pm.

Giuliani Construction worked into the night to board-up the damaged structure with plywood.

EARLY MORNING BLAZE AT BONNY DOON FIRE STATION

Staff Report

Around 4:45am March 18, firefighters learned of a fire at the McDermott Fire Station in Bonny Doon, at the intersection of Empire Grade, Ice Cream Grade and Felton-Empire Road.

The response to 7276 Empire Grade included crews from Cal Fire, the Santa Cruz County Fire Department and the Felton Fire Protection District.

“First arriving resources found active fire and the water tender involved,” a Cal Fire CZU spokesperson said on Twitter.

“Crews set priorities and conducted primary search of both stories and simultaneously conducted fire attack.”

The firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading beyond the water tender.

“The station received smoke and water damage,” the spokesperson added. “The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and is being investigated.”

KEEPING IT REAL IN LOS GATOS

NC Boardshop, from page 1 doing schooling—and via osmosis just meeting people. Skaters back then just knew each other regardless of if they'd met beforehand.”

Allen moved from Florida in 1991 at the age of 18 and quickly found community, in part due to his passion for skateboarding.

He’s carried that niche part of his identity with him into his career.

These days, Allen acts almost like a father to a subculture that's been surprisingly resilient here.

As Allen's social circle grew, he met people who were sponsored. He eventually began helping out at a skate shop until he was employed.

Alex Vecchiet began NC Boardshop in 1986. Though now a commercial fisherman, he remains one of the co-owners.

The second location was at 145 N. Santa Cruz Ave. The next decade was at 442 N. Santa Cruz Ave., by where Starbucks and Aldo’s Restaurant are now.

NC has been along Los Gatos Boulevard for 26 years.

Skateboarding was fuelled by raw rebellion, where skaters would ride the ramps of a local library or mall. Though many found this troublesome, the sport’s prominence flourished in the cracks of society, as skaters eschewed the commercial world.

Allen says he has been approached more than once to be acquired by big companies. But he said no each time. Allen explains that NC was one of the first stores in the Bay Area to carry snowboards. Surfing on snow is no longer a novelty.

When the culture—and their business—were pumping on all cylinders in the 90s, investors would go around and look for shops like NC to scoop up.

"We never wanted to go that route,” Allen said. “It takes the heart and soul out of skating. We opted to stay small instead of selling out to that.”

Allen muses that he sometimes wishes he had taken that path, joking that he'd probably be retired already, driving a cooler car and living in a nicer house.

But this desire to stay small—and not explode—allowed NC to maintain its sense of self.

What does Allen think about the fact that Los Gatos has no skateparks? He reflects on how, in the 80s and 90s, skateboarding used to be very organic, with a legitimate countercultural ethos.

"To me, skate parks take all the skaters of the world and just corrall…them into this little micro environment,” he said. “It takes a lot of the artistry out of it. And that's why we're seeing a decline in skateboarding."

But Allen also remembers being part of the drive to argue for the building of a

skatepark—with the costs and benefits all laid out—which did not succeed.

"I don't want there to be a skatepark in town, because I don't want skateboards or scooter riders getting blamed for everything that happens in town,” he said. “I want to keep skating in a good light."

For Allen, skateboarding is about freedom. He wants to protect it from becoming a scapegoat.

However it seems in no danger of that on the global level.

The skateboarding business is anticipated to surpass $4 billion in value by 2030. And it’s now in the Olympics. But some argue the culture has taken a back seat.

According to Allen, skateboarding is at a commercial high since it's gone to the Olympics and Having seen the undulations before, Allen's speculates mainstream skate culture is bound to hit another rocky patch at some point, as it becomes more generic.

But as the corporate side faces strain, he says, skate culture is bound to return to its roots.

Preserving the heart and soul

Allen says that kids who grew up on NC are now coming in with their own youngsters.

“We're more than just sales people to them, we're part of that community," he said.

Some of the biggest brand names that Allen carries are Roark, Viori, Santa Cruz Skateboards, Volcom, RVCA and Rhythm.

NC’s inventory caters not just to surfers or skaters, but people of all ages, from children to grandparents.

Allen knows that, historically at least, skate shops have had a stigma.

His goal is to create a retail environment where his own mother can walk in and be comfortable.

“The stigma is always going to be there,” he said. “And that's why I try embracing everybody.”

Jimbo Phillips, of Santa Cruz, made the original No Control logo.

In the late 90s, NC developed their own skate team. They were pretty elite, with names like Jerry Hsu, Mark Johnson and Paul Sharp among them.

This helped to create a community and build brand recognition.

“There was the core team, and then the ethos and atmosphere of the community,” Allen said, adding the competitive landscape is something that’s grown-up with the newer generations of skaters.

Allen says NC has always tried to support athletes in any way that they can, from making videos that went world-wide, sending riders on trips or inspiring younger skateboarders to try their first ollie.

Their initial team of skaters have moved on, many with their own families and businesses.

But the passion remains.

"Skate culture is like a tight clique of friends that all explore and develop an industry together,” Allen said. “You all support each other, and are lifting each other up. It's the unspoken bond of community.”

John Pryor, the manager of NC, has been best friends with Allen for over 20 years now.

“We're like brothers,” he said. “My mom and I moved here from Illinois when I was in the fourth grade.”

Those were simpler times, growing up in the early 80s.

Modern day activities like doomscolling on smartphones weren't a thing yet. Pryor bmx-riding and skateboarding became the default after-school activities for Pryor.

He, too, found belonging in the skateboard counterculture—another outcast finding his tribe. Pryor says working at NC can feel less like a job and more like a way of life.

The skate world culture has changed quite a bit, he says. But, he adds, through it all, the local shops have remained like a “church” to the culture.

“The biggest issue is phones. I think that's changing the kids,” he said. “Kids are always on their phones, even at the skateparks.”

So, in a town like Los Gatos keeping a business alive can be tough, how has NC been able to succeed for so long?

It’s stood the test of time by embracing the core—outside of society's norms. And if they’ve proven one thing it's this: there's no controlling the heart of skateboard culture.

LOOKING BACK NC Boardshop manager John Pryor (left) and co-owner Mike Allen reminisce about the time, in 1998, when John photographed skater Jerry Hsu in Los Gatos. The event was a skate demo and canned food drive at a former location on North Santa Cruz Avenue. Hsu now owns Sci-Fi Fantasy.
RETAIL CREW Pryor (left) and Allen have ridden the highs and lows of the skateboard industry together.

COLIN PEATTIE JOINS THE SUB 4 CLUB

Los Gatos native adds to storied running career

Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor Decades from now, the date of Jan. 31, 2026 will still be seared in the mind of Colin Peattie.

That’s the day the Los Gatos native joined the “sub 4” club—in running vernacular that’s running a mile in under four minutes.

By finishing in 3:59.53 in the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic, the 23-year-old Peattie accomplished a goal he’d set in his freshman year of high school.

When Peattie crossed the finish line, reality turned out to be better than a dream.

“It was the most incredible feeling in the world to finally accomplish that,” said Peattie, a Boston College graduate student who spent the previous three years at Santa Clara University (and before that a year at the University of Virginia). “It’s been eight years I’ve been thinking about this, so for it to finally happen is indescribable.”

In the leadup to the race, Peattie had never felt more prepared to accomplish his goal of going sub 4.

Yet perhaps paradoxically, he’d never felt as nervous toeing the starting line as he did Jan. 31.

“It was really nerve-wracking, because I ran 4:02 at Santa Clara last year,” he said. “I knew based on the last eight months I’ve been at Boston College, I am a lot fitter than I was a year ago. So, I knew breaking four was realistic. Knowing I was capable of it and that it would come down to execution, that’s what made me really nervous. Everything was in my control and it was pretty scary, because I knew I wouldn’t have something to point to if I didn’t accomplish this dream I’ve had since I was a 14-year-old starting the sport.”

Competing on one of the fastest indoor tracks in the nation, Peattie’s race plan was rather straightforward: sit on the third or fourth runner until someone surged and made a move.

“And that pretty much ended up happening,” he said.

The field of fleet-footed runners went through the first 800 meters in 2:08— slightly above 4-minute mile pace—but that quickened in the final 50 percent.

SPORTS

“Things really got going in the second half of the race,” he said. “It turned out to be bumper cars: physical, elbows thrown, people really getting aggressive the last three, four laps. I kept on trying to cover moves for the rest of the way.”

Once Peattie got within a few feet of the line, he leaned in—because he saw the clock getting close to four minutes.

“It started freaking me out,” he said. “I finished, and all my teammates started screaming and going crazy. I was kind of in shock and didn’t want to celebrate until I saw my name on the results screen.”

Bent over, hands on his knees, head facing upward, Peattie saw his name appear, with the time: 3:59.53.

At long last, mission accomplished.

“In a way, I felt mostly relief that it finally happened and I had done it,” he said. “And right after that, I got tackled by a bunch of my teammates.”

Running sub 4—even just once—can never be considered a fluke, because of all the factors it takes to produce a performance of that magnitude. However, if a runner does it multiple times, it speaks volumes of their talent and work ethic.

So it is for Peattie, who went sub 4 again a mere three weeks after the first. On Feb. 22 in the Saucony Battle for Boston Last

Chance Meet, Peattie established another personal record, running a 3:58.76.

“It felt good to know there was more progress to be made, and 3:59 wasn’t the ceiling,” he said. “So it’s definitely a confidence-boost going into the outdoor season, knowing I can still get better.”

Peattie’s string of all-time bests didn’t come in a straightforward manner—they rarely do.

Carving his own path

Raised in Los Gatos, Peattie seemed destined to make a name for himself as a Wildcat. After all, his entire immediate family—parents Mark and Michelle, and older brother Clayton—all graduated from Los Gatos High School. Peattie even attended Fisher Middle School, where he joined running competitions for the first time.

“Up until the seventh grade at Fisher, I wasn’t doing running just to run,” he said. “I played a lot of sports, like soccer and basketball. It wasn’t until middle school PE where I kind of realized, ‘Oh, I could be a pretty good runner.’”

That’s because the Fisher Middle School P.E. staff saw in Fisher what he didn’t see in himself at the time: an athlete whose running talent was undeniable.

“We did the mile (run) in PE and the teachers at Fisher kept on encouraging me to go out for the cross-country team,” he said. “At first I said no, because I wanted to play soccer and basketball. They got me eventually, and I’m thankful for them guiding me that way.”

It didn’t take long for Peattie’s immense talent to translate into spectacular results. At Fisher, he established school records and won the USTA national title in the boys U14 cross-country race. So, everything was set up for him to attend LGHS, right?

Wrong.

Peattie ran for the Los Gatos Track Club during his middle school years. Some of his friends on the team were headed to Bellarmine, and Peattie decided the private Jesuit school was his best option, as well.

“I knew Bellarmine was really good at track and cross country,” he said. “Some of my track club teammates were really good runners—and ones I looked up to and admired. I had my head set on Bellarmine, and needed to go there to run with these guys more.”

Peattie joked that for a short time he became an outcast in the family.

Los Gatos gears up for Chamber gala at Nestldown, Thrifted Treasures at Adult Rec Center

Where did Los Gatans celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year?

Short answer: all over town.

But I came up with a longer answer: from Hapas tap room, through Chez Phillipe (with a bite of the French version of corned beef-cabbage), an iced green matcha at Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Co., then a quick green beer at the upstairs Heritage Pub, with a peek into the Second Story. On down thru Gardino’s, a “Hello” to the regulars at The Black Watch, and ending up at the main event—Campo Di Bocce’s “Little Ireland”—which rocked-on until 11pm.

Remembering St. Patrick’s Day past

CB Hannegans opened their doors in Sept. 1979. From then on (38 years) Los Gatans went there to celebrate on March 17.

PEATTIE GETS HIS GROOVE BACK AFTER BIG SETBACK

“I’m definitely the black sheep for not going to Los Gatos, but things worked out,” he said. “At the time, my parents and Clay definitely would’ve liked for me to go to Los Gatos from the perspective that we would’ve all graduated from there. But, once I gave them my reasons for wanting to attend Bellarmine, they got behind it, eventually.”

Peattie’s best performances at Bellarmine came in his sophomore 2019-2020 school year. In the fall cross-country season, he won the Central Coast Section Division I race, before placing fourth in the CIF State Championships. The following spring in the track and field season, Peattie won the 1600-meter run in the CCS Championships, before landing second in the CIF State Championships with a PR of 4:09.99.

Critical decision

Similar to when he chose Bellarmine out of middle school, Peattie had another critical choice to make, when it came to where he would compete in college. He chose the University of Virginia, in large part because of its academics—but also because of legendary running coach Vin Lananna.

“As a high school senior, I really had big goals for what I would want to accomplish in college, and I felt going to Virginia was the best possible way to achieve them,” Peattie said. “I wanted to be a part of their championship tradition. I had a great support staff at Bellarmine telling me it would be a great decision to go to a program like that.”

However, things didn’t go as planned at UVA. In the fall cross-country season, Peattie was disappointed with his results and lack of improvement. To make matters worse, Peattie suffered a fractured patella in his left knee and needed surgery in late November. That sidelined him for five months.

“That was really hard,” he said, “because I was out for a long time, and coming back from the injury wasn’t a smooth process.”

In the months after the surgery, Peattie started to second-guess his decision to attend UVA.

“Once doubt came in, I knew I needed to make a change,” he said.

Thus began the most trying period in Peattie’s life.

“There were so many unknowns after that injury,” he said. “My expectations and confidence obviously weren’t there anymore, and I was kind of questioning whether or not the sport was really for me anymore. That was really tough to deal with. I considered quitting pretty seriously.”

Peattie finished out the school year at UVA, enabling him to transfer to another college as a sophomore. The question was, where would he end up? And would he continue to run?

The answers came at a place a stone’s throw away from Bellarmine. In June 2022, Peattie committed to Santa Clara

University, igniting a three-year run in which Peattie made dramatic strides on the track.

He got his groove back.

Peattie developed a stronger connection with running, which manifested itself in key ways.

“The coaches and my teammates at Santa Clara—some of my best friends— helped breathe new life into how I look at the sport,” Peattie said. “Now, I think about not so much that I have to run really fast, but simply enjoying the experience. Over time, I went from being someone who put huge expectations on

myself to having a mindset of, ‘I love doing this; I love the sport; I love the process.’ That definitely made doing it everyday so much easier—and more fun. I’m so thankful to have had teammates and coaches who shifted my mindset that way. It was the perfect situation for me, and I couldn't have asked for a better place to transfer to.”

Renewed and invigorated, Peattie had a solid three-year run at Santa Clara, culminating in the 2025 outdoor track season in which he established personal-bests in the 800 and 1500. His results proved to be a sneak preview for what

happened this past indoor season and now as he transitions into his final collegiate outdoor season.

Stronger out of adversity

At UVA, Peattie faced the biggest bout of adversity in his running career. The circumstances nearly led him to quit the sport. Yet his time there proved to be a crucible, testing Peattie’s resolve and character.

“While it was challenging at the time, in hindsight, I’m thankful I went through that process of going to and transferring from UVA,” he said. “To realize going there wasn’t the best decision, and then to follow through and make a change is something that wasn’t easy. I’ve definitely thought about that year a lot. It was really formative for me because it was super challenging.”

Peattie credited his family for supporting him throughout, especially in the difficult post-surgery

“My family would have my back in whatever decision I made,” he said. “I decided to come home to be closer to them, and having that support system really close by was the best decision I’ve made in college. Without having family right there, it would've been much harder to come back and impossible to build the momentum I have now. I’m really thankful for their support in the whole process.”

Strong bonds have always been a source of strength of the Peattie family. Clayton, a 2012 LGHS graduate, is largely responsible for Colin’s determination and tenacity.

“He’s the person that made me as competitive and driven in sports as I am today,” Colin said. “He played basketball at Los Gatos, and at one point I think held the state record (for) steals in a game. We’d play hoops in the backyard, and he would hide a yellow Gatorade bottle—but beat me in the first half of the game. Then, he’d pull out the Gatorade bottle, and after I drank it, he’d let me win. So, it was like a power-up kind of thing. We’d always be playing games and competing. Him being nine years older, he definitely became the person I was chasing and trying to be like.”

After all these years, Clayton and Colin remain close.

“Clay continues to inspire and push me to this day,” Colin said. “He always talks to me before races and knows the right things to say to motivate me. I’m really thankful I had him to look up to when I was little, and now I have him to guide and push me.”

With a couple of months left in his college career, Peattie is cherishing each moment. His identity is no longer tied to his results and times; rather, he values being able to compete—period.

“In terms of goals this year, I just want to continue to improve,” he said. “At the end of the day, it’s easy to get caught up in thinking, I need to run this time or it’s not a success. I just want to compete against myself and keep getting better, and go out and leave the track as the best version of myself, athletically. Of course, I’ll try to get a few PRs, but either way, I can walk away with a smile on my face.”

THE GREAT VANISHING

Did the Los Gatos Lodge sign finally check out?

If you drove down Los Gatos-Saratoga Road this morning and felt a strange, existential chill, as if a beloved landmark had been quietly snatched in the night, you aren't alone. The horizon is flatter, the colors are duller, and the “Gateway to the Mountains” is suddenly missing its crown jewel.

A few weeks ago, the Los Gatos Lodge sign, a towering beacon of Mid-Century roadside glory, officially checked out. After nearly seven decades of service, the sign has vanished, leaving behind nothing but a rectangular patch of empty sky and a town full of amateur detectives.

While the Lodge itself prepares for its transformation into the “Solana” residential community, the fate of its iconic sign remains shrouded in mystery and whimsy. Was it carefully crated for a museum, or did it simply decide that if the Veranda Bar was closing, it had no reason to keep the lights on?

Local authorities (and by that, I mean the regulars at the nearest coffee shop) have begun circulating a virtual flyer to aid in the search:

Missing: The Gateside Guardian (Last Seen: March 2026)

• NAME: The Los Gatos Lodge Sign

• AGE: 68 (but looks 25 under the right neon)

• HEIGHT: Impressive. Taller than your average Los Gatos High School basketball player.

• DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: A penchant for green, white and yellow.

• “Atomic Age” geometry.

• Adamantly refuses to believe in minimalism.

• Has a "star-burst" personality and a geometric soul.

• LAST SEEN: Standing faithfully at the gateway to the mountains, minding its own business and glowing with mid-century pride.

• REWARD: The eternal gratitude of every driver who uses it as a landmark to know they’ve finally escaped the Highway 17 crawl. Also, a round of vintage martinis at the Veranda Bar (if we can find that, too).

• IF FOUND: Please do not attempt to dismantle. It is sensitive to modern

On Monday, the Los Gatos Lodge sign—not to mention the entire former garden motel—was nowhere to be seen, as plans proceed for a 155-townhome development from SummerHill Homes called “Solana.”

Theories of “The Vanishing”

Where does a forty-foot neon sign go when it wants to “get away from it all”?

The prognostications are flying faster than a Tesla on the 85 interchange. Some say the sign is currently in a witness protection program, hiding out in a high-end garage in the Santa Cruz Mountains to avoid being repainted "Swiss Chocolate." Others suggest it’s joined a traveling circus of vintage neon, finally touring the country like it always dreamed of doing back in the 60s. There is even a darker theory: that

the sign, sensing the arrival of high-density housing, simply folded itself into a fourth dimension of pure nostalgia. It’s still there, some argue, you just have to be driving a 1957 Chevy Bel Air and listening to a vacuum-tube radio to see it.

But there is a more domestic possibility. We’ve seen this kind of thing before. My daughter and son-in-law, for instance, have a ten-foot-high ceramic bear taking up permanent residence in their backyard down in Monrovia. If a giant, stoic bear can find a happy home in a private garden in Southern California, who’s to say our Lodge sign hasn't done the same?

Perhaps it’s currently reclining behind a fence in a suburban cul-de-sac, acting as the world’s most over-the-top nightlight for a patio set. It wouldn't be the first time a piece of oversized California kitsch was “liberated” to provide a little mid-century ambiance to a private BBQ.

A legacy in neon

The Los Gatos Lodge opened in 1958, a time when the "Motor Hotel" was the height of Californian luxury. For generations, that sign was a North Star for weary travelers and a “Welcome Home” for locals. It represented a time when architecture had a sense of humor and a dash of space-age optimism.

While the new Solana development promises a "modern living experience," the loss of the sign feels like the end of an era. It wasn't just metal and gas; it was a visual handshake.

As we wait for news of its whereabouts, we can only hope the “Gateside Guardian” is somewhere warm. Maybe it’s even hanging out with a giant ceramic bear in a quiet backyard, being appreciated by people who understand that a star-burst shape is always superior to a flat glass facade.

WHOLE FOODS PREPARES FOR ITS FIRST BATCH OF CUSTOMERS

Whole Foods, from page 1

the store will offer more than 2,000 local items from 350+ California-based suppliers.

The Austin, Texas-based multinational will provide an all-electric refrigerated van and food donation to West Valley Community Services, part of the corporation’s Nourishing Our Neighborhoods program.

And on opening day the first 300 shoppers are to receive a limited-edition tote bag and a “Secret Saver” card—featuring offers of up to $100 off—when the store opens at 9am.

The building at 15650 Los Gatos Blvd. itself boasts 43,130 square feet of space—almost double the size of the previous location.

Don’t expect wooden tables for eating your lunch, like at the Santa Cruz location. But though the outdoor seating is plastic, the furniture can still fit four people comfortably.

The grocery items from California-based suppliers are being sourced with the help of “Forager for Local & Emerging Brands” Patrick Wyman (floral items have to meet Whole Foods’ Pollinator Health Policy meant to reduce the use of pesticides, the company says).

Produce will come from Tomatero Farms and Coke Farms; specialty department items will come from Andante Dairy, Charles Chocolates and Nicasio Valley Cheese; the “curated grocery section” will feature raw honey from Small Bees, light, medium and dark roasts from Coffee & Water Lab, and fermented almonds and cashews from Philosopher Foods; the seafood counter will offer ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat meals, and will get their array of items from partners such as The Santa Barbara Smokehouse and Tsar Nicoulai (HQ promises all offerings will either be “sustainable wildcaught” or “Responsibly Farmed.”)

The full-service meat counter is to feature “animal-welfare-certified selections,” with butchers there to cut beef and poultry to order. Consumers can expect made-in-house sausage, as well as marinated and seasoned meats. Suppliers include Eel River Organic Beef, Pozzi Ranch and Silva Sausage Coop. “Animals must be raised with no antibiotics ever,” the release states.

There will be 500+ wines and 330+ craft beers and a variety of spirits to choose from.

“The department will also feature product from more than 110 local win -

eries and 40 local breweries, including McBride Sisters Collection, Field Recordings Wine, Russian River Brewing Company, Original Pattern Brewing Coop and Cellarmaker Brewing Company,” the spokesperson said.

In February, the Los Gatan interviewed Morgan Bricca, the muralist who painted four bright birds in a series of murals on the side of the building. She explained that these correspond with the four seasons: a house finch for spring, an American goldfinch for summer, a scrub jay for fall and an eastern spotted towhee for winter.

Around the same time, the Wall Street Journal—another Bezos-owned compa-

ny—announced it would cut a third of its staff. This came not long after Amazon pledged $1 million to Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration fund.

Back in Los Gatos, Whole Foods is readying its prepared foods department, which will serve-up hot food and salad bars, with a rotating menu of “comfort foods” and seasonal items. You will be able to purchase pizza by the slice, or order an entire pie. Sushi will be crafted daily by Genji.

Bread will be baked fresh daily and the department will also have items like strawberry cherry pistachio crumble pie and mango yuzu Chantilly cake. Expect merchandise from Sconehenge Bakery,

Over in the Wellness & Beauty aisle, company officials say you’ll be able to get moringa powder and gummies from Kuli Kuli Foods, soy wax scented candles from Viviana Luxury Candles and skincare from Cocokind.

“Opening morning, customers will enjoy coffee and pastry samples from local suppliers,” the spokesperson said. Whole Foods Market will also provide monetary donations to Ma’alot Farms, which was featured in the Los Gatan in November, and Santa Clara-based River of Life Food Pantry.
