A 69-year-old San Jose man has raised age discrimination concerns with state and federal authorities after a “building attendant” job offer he’d received from Los Gatos-Saratoga Community Education and Recreation (LGS Recreation) was yanked. On Friday, Paul Taylor—who says he’d made it through two rounds of interviews with the social services agency and received an official contract—filed complaints with both the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and California’s Civil Rights Department. “In a way I feel violated,” said Taylor, by telephone on Friday morning. “I can’t go back in time and be 43 again.” Per the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act and California’s Fair Employment and Housing Act, people 40 and up cannot be treated differently because of their age than others in the workplace—including when it comes to hiring. Taylor says his interviews with the local nonprofit, which offers fitness classes, seasonal day camps and the 55 Plus program for seniors, went well and he was offered a position on July 16. “I was formerly hired,” he said. “It was a done deal.” Taylor says he completed the online onboarding the same day he got his offer letter, then completed the Life ➝ Ageism, 6

Ask most coaches and parents, and they’ll gladly scrap their annual summer destination travel plans if it meant their team would advance far in the postseason. So it is for the Los Gatos Little League 12U All Star
baseball team, whose riveting run continued after a 6-5, extra-inning win over Los Altos in the Section 5 Tournament championship game on July 22 at Aptos Little League Field. The victory—a heart-pounding, white-knuckle contest that displayed Los Gatos’ resiliency—qualified it to the NorCal Tournament in Chico. Los Gatos opened Norcal action with a 7-5 win over Section 6 champion Amador East on July
25, putting them into a winner’s bracket semifinal against San Ramon Valley. To qualify for NorCals, Los Gatos had to come up clutch in the rubber match with Los Altos in Sectionals. Los Gatos was sitting pretty after winning its first three games—6-2 over Santa Teresa, 10-0 over Los Altos and 17-2 over tournament host Aptos—which landed it in the championship round. ➝ Champs, 8
