The San Benito County Board of Supervisors is preparing for a fight over the Panoche Valley Solar Farm. On Tuesday, supervisors approved a contract not to exceed $60,000 for legal representation in the county’s pursuit to fix breaches in the development agreement with ConEdison Development, which is behind the 26,000-acre solar project. This latest move comes after the county issued a notice of default to the energy behemoth last month. The county believes ConEdison
a 247-megawatt plant would produce $25.6 million in tax revenue for the county, compared to $8.9 million at its current projected size of 127 megawatts. “That’s $4.6 million in sales tax and $4.3 million in lieu of property tax,” explained Gonzalez, adding that he got his estimates from public information sources. “We don’t have any sort of direct reporting from ConEd regarding these revenue sources,” he said. ConEdison Development Director of Project Development Eric Cherniss addressed the supervisors. “First, let me just say that we recognize the communication with the county regarding some of these complex issues has not been ideal,”

The San Benito County chapter of the national nonprofit organization Birthday Cakes 4 Free started last spring and group members have been bringing cakes, cupcakes and muffins to low-income seniors and children ever since then. Since the group started in June, its members have delivered about five cakes a month to the Emmaus House, Chamberlain's Children Center and the assisted living facility Whispering Pines Inn. Now they're looking to expand to individual homes in the county. A2

the evening, starting at 4 p.m., they help vendors pack up.” Since the club, which consists of members throughout San Benito County, took over the event, a number of changes have been implemented. “We decided to give Rotary gift bags to vendors with items including granola bars, water, and candy,” said Muñoz. “We also started asking vendors to save the date for the following year, which has been very successful.” The club also installed more public restrooms and way finding signs, and brought in an antiques appraiser. “People bring items when they are not sure of their value,” said Muñoz. The line is always very long. It’s amazing how popular it is.” What started 53 years ago as a local flea market has grown into one of the largest antique fairs in California. “Everything is pre-1975,” said event volunteer, Jill Ortiz. “This is strictly antiques – no crafts, new items or flea market stuff.” “Over the years we’ve had

The pair will also have a selection of vintage dolls. “Unlike Barbies, these are works of art,” said Dolfin. “So many people come into the shop and are sent down memory lane.” Dolfin started collecting dolls when her sister passed away. “I fell in love with dolls all over again,” she said. Dolfin first sold at the antique fair in 2008, but her ties to San Juan Bautista run deep; her daughter, Wendy Varga, used to own the Mariposa House Restaurant. “You get dealers from all over the state and elsewhere,” said Dolfin. “Usually the crowds are 5,000 and more.” Since 2010, the Rotary Club of San Juan Bautista has been organizing the city’s premier summer event. “We are small, but mighty,” said Jackie Muñoz, one of the club’s 31 members and a fair volunteer. The group starts organizing for the fair in January. “To do a really good job on the day we have 40 volunteers,” Muñoz explained. “They get vendors to their spaces on Third Street, help them unpack and make sure all boxes are off the sidewalks because of fire safety laws. Collecting is more than a passion for Hollister antiques dealer, Sherry Dolfin. “It’s an affliction,” said the proprietor of Sherry’s Adoptable Dolls & Antiques at 890 San Benito Street, between smothered bursts of laughter. Dolfin, and business partner, Claudia Arnold, are preparing for the San Juan Bautista Antique & Collectibles Fair on Sunday. They will be one of at least 75 dealers in the historic town center showcasing their wares. “We’re taking a lot of jewelry, small furniture, cooking utensils – things that won’t break,” said Dolfin. “We’ll have loads of vintage jewelry from the 1940s to 1960s – some will be even older. We’ll have broaches, earrings, and bracelets. I love the glitz and glamour of that era. When you put a piece of jewelry on, it makes the dress. You can even wear it with jeans.”

The Community Foundation of San Benito County and its allies have launched an online petition to support its plans to build the nonprofit new offices on the 400 block of San Benito Street. Started last Friday, the online petition is open to anyone with an Internet connection, even if they live outside city limits. It’s different than the petition spearheaded by Hollister Mayor Ignacio Velazquez, which needed to be signed by 10 percent of the city’s registered voters, to bring the 400 block sale decision before Hollister voters. That petition, submitted with approximately 2,465 signatures, is under review by the city’s election official. Marketing Communications Coordinator for the Community Foundation Sharlene Van Rooy said that while the petition has no legal force like the one Velazquez submitted to the city last month, it’s there to show support for the nonprofit’s new headquarters. Yet, when asked about the origins of the online petition, Van Rooy was quick to deny the Community Foundation had a hand in drafting it. “We sent out an email letting our donors and that sort of people in our mailing list know about the petition, but we didn’t write the petition,” Van Rooy said by phone Monday. “We had nothing to do with putting it out there, but we’re in support of it of course.” The point is a fine distinction. Executive board members from the Community Foundation, as well as the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce, Hollister Downtown Association and the San Benito County Business Council, comprise the Restore the 400 Block coalition behind the online petition. “The leadership of the organizations met over the last several weeks and developed their own campaign, including the petition, social media and other ways to demonstrate

The City of Hollister marked a milestone with cake and entertainment Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Building. “The 40th anniversary of the recreation department is an amazing accomplishment,” Hollister City Councilman Jim Gillio told a crowd of locals and parks department staff – past and present – at the celebratory gala. Recreation supervisor Tina Garza explained the extent of the department’s involvement in the city as she stood before a display of more than 2,000 photos of activities taken over the last four decades. “We provide a lot of services, adult and youth sports, and special events like Breakfast with Santa. The first day of school just got a lot brighter for thousands of local students. On Saturday, Stuff the Bus, a project from the United Way of San Benito County, distributed backpacks filled with school supplies to students in need. “It’s so our kids can start school prepared,” said coordinator, Vicki Fortino, as she stood before stacks of new backpacks laid out on tables at the Target parking lot. Throughout the morning, volunteers gave the backpacks to eligible students previously identified by their school district. “Homeless, foster and migrant kids are served first, then people who receive free and reduced school lunch,” explained Fortino. “We should have 7,000 backpacks based on that formula, but fortunately, what we got here is what the schools asked us for. We were able to fill every request.” The backpacks were filled with school supplies according to grade level.
“Kindergarten to third grade received items such as composition books, crayons, rulers, colored pencils, and folders and fourth to eighth grade got pencils, pens, binders and binder paper. All received pencil cases or pouches,” said Fortino. And for the first time this year, high school students were served. Their backpacks contained a scientific calculator. “As this grows and we get more donations, I’m sure they will open it up to more students who receive free and reduced school lunch,” said Fortino. Students who did not attend the distribution day will receive their backpack at school, said Fortino. Stuff the Bus, now in its fifth year, raised $15,000 for school supplies. “We had 10 donation drop-off points in the area,” said Fortino. About a hundred volunteers helped stuff and distribute the backpacks to students, explained Fortino. Businesses and organizations who participated Saturday included Target, Rabobank, Hope Services, the San Benito High School water polo team, local Girls Scouts troops, Cienega 4-H, Rotary Club of Hollister, and Heroes for Hope.

City and county leaders during last week’s intergovernmental meeting discussed sharing equipment across jurisdictions as a way to cut down on expensive road maintenance costs.
“You guys have a striping truck and we don’t,” San Juan Bautista Mayor Chris Martorana told the gathering of policymakers and top level staff from Hollister and San Benito County. “Maybe we should pay you to do the striping or work it out internally. It would be more collaborative on the planning side and we could direct staff to make every effort to line up what they’re doing [to what is going on elsewhere]. So if there’s extra asphalt,
it doesn’t get dumped in some holding area. It goes to the City of San Juan Bautista to fill in something over here.” Hollister Mayor Ignacio Velazquez said representatives need to know what road equipment is available to share. Hollister Vice Mayor Karson Klauer said that was more of a staff question. “We just don’t have the knowledge base to make those decisions here,” Klauer said. “We’ll

Later in the evening, a second distinguished service award was presented to Marietta De La Cruz, the longest serving instructor in the department. De La Cruz, 49, first got involved with Hollister recreation programs when she was 12 years old. After attending University of California, Davis and four years of active duty in the military, De La Cruz returned to Hollister and began teaching martial arts. “I came back and took over the karate school,” De La Cruz said. “They were going to shut it down because there was some turmoil going on, but I’ve kept it alive since 1999 and it’s going strong.” De La Cruz said she likes that classes are kept affordable.
“A lot of karate schools charge a lot and not everyone can do it,” she said. “My parents were farmers and we couldn’t afford the expensive stuff and the programs were affordable for me. We just love to have kids learn to defend themselves and become confident people.” The free, anniversary event featured local entertainment by the San Benito Dance Academy, Barnes Academy of Irish Dancing, Sammy’s Animation Dance Community, Yamamoto Ohana Hula, singer/ songwriter Kya Andrade and country singer Martin Pulido. Contributors included The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Ohana Shaved Ice, Dino’s Hot Diggity Dogs, MANA food vendors and Safeway bakery.

We’ll have vintage western coming this year. There is also a gal who will bring old Chinese furniture. “ She added: “One year,
someone brought old teapots they turned into wind chimes. There are all sorts of really fun stuff.” The event will also feature live music, food vendors, and local merchants who are eligible to book a space at a reduced cost. “They can have a space to put things out on the street or they can keep their door open so people can see inside,” explained Muñoz. “We want to bring
people to town so merchants and restaurants can profit as well.” All space rental fees are donated back to the community. “After expenses all profits go back to the community in the form of grants, scholarships, support for needy families and events such as Lights on Parade. We support a lot of projects in San Juan Bautista and Aromas,” said Ortiz.
County loses revenue Panoche Valley, 1 Cherniss said. “We’re working hard to rectify that moving forward. We do have a commitment that [Panoche Valley Solar] will make good on all of its obligations under the development agreement, which are substantial.” Cherniss also addressed the downsizing of the project. “Right now, we have the approvals necessary for the current 247 megawatt project. We don’t have approvals necessary to potentially reduce that project. In the event that those approvals do come to fruition, we’ll continue to have what I hope to be a fruitful dialogue with both the supervisors and staff.” Supervisor Anthony Botelho asked Cherniss if an office had opened in the unincorporated area where the expenditures could be credited to the county. Cherniss said a fix was put in place to resolve future sales tax revenue.
“We also have changes in place to resolve retroactively some of the activities that have occurred on the site to fix that situation,” Cherniss said. “[The office] is actually on the project site on Little Panoche Road.” Board Chairman Jaime De La Cruz said he remembered going to Sacramento with former Supervisor Margie Barrios to lobby support for the project. “We believed in this project being beneficial to our community,” De La Cruz said. “Now to hear the numbers presented to us saddens me.” De La Cruz said he hoped ConEdison Development would commit to paying out the economic value of a 247 megawatt plant. “I know you have 125 out there on the floor at the moment. I don’t know what else to say other than we did have a gentleman’s agreement and I think it’s time your party fulfills their obligation,” he said.
During public comment, resident Marty Richman said it was the environmentalists that ran the project down. In July, a court settlement agreement between ConEdison Development and the California Fish and Wildlife, the Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife and the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society reduced the size of the solar project to around 1,300 acres. Where are our legislators? Why weren’t you in on the meetings? Why were you frozen out? Our legislators knew those meetings were going on and you didn’t. Shame on them and shame on you.”

Current plans for the vacant 400 block on San Benito Street are for a philanthropic center and a mix of shops and residential. How do you feel about these plans? Are there better uses for this space in the city’s downtown district? Keith Snow: I feel that is fine. We need to stay focused on what is best for the community. The parking? It is already limited. Will there be enough parking for the housing and offices they plan to put there? We need better planning and structure when it comes to new projects in our city. That is key. Mary Zanger: A branch of Gavilan College would benefit the whole community. Most requested and most needed courses could be offered. This would raise the level
of culture and knowledge thereby radiating unimaginable benefaction to all including the revitalization of downtown. Ruth Erickson: The 400 block was bought by the city with public funds derived from our taxes so those whose taxes have provided funds for the purchase of the property should have a say in how the property is used or developed. Robert Gibson: A homeless shelter, that should finish off the few businesses clinging to life in that area.

he Hollister City Council should go back to the drawing board on the 400 block. Dueling petition drives in a divided community are not a good way to make strategic planning decisions and revitalize a downtown. To make downtown the place it should be requires consensus and buy-in. The bumbling, secretive process that led to this ballot box war is having precisely the opposite effect, and could leave scars that will last decades. After voting in 2016 to give an exclusive negotiating agreement to a developer, the city kept its plans under wraps for a year. It then unveiled a new scheme to divide the property just days before a council vote, without public hearings or a public debate. That’s not exactly confidence inspiring. At minimum, the city should have allowed a new round of competitive proposals based on its change of heart about its willingness to divide the property. When more than 2000 citizens attached their names to a petition to rescind the decision or place the plan on the ballot, it should have made city leaders rethink their course. Instead, what did the city do? It ran to the attorney general in hopes the land sell-off would be declared a simple “administrative” or “executive” action exempt from the democratic process. The 400 block is downtown’s busiest corner and should be a signature project with iconic architecture that’s integrated into a broader downtown revitalization plan. The present downtown plan is outdated. The city and business leaders should be looking at retail and entertainment mixes, traffic and streetscape beautification, as well as how to create a pedestrian-friendly environment. The “let’s build this thing and figure it out later” notion is misguided and desperate. The 400 block properties were acquired by the city as an opportunity to create a transformative project, such as a cinema complex or a regional center for the arts. An office building and modest condo complex don’t rise to that level, and many members of the public argue that an open space for local events brings more benefit to the community. Whichever side of the debate one is on, a broad-based, open and inclusive community discussion, as well as a well-publicized competition for proposals, would serve Hollister well. The last set of discussions was limited to insiders. It’s not too late to do it right.

aomi Martin passed away on July 24, 2017 after a short decline in health following a “minor” heart attack in April. She died at home, peacefully and comfortably, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her son, Michael Martin and her daughter-in-law, Cynthia Martin; her daughters Antonia (Toni) Martin and Kelly Martin; and her granddaughter, Alyssa Martin. She is also survived by her sisters, Colleen Spoelstra and Darlene Todahl, and multiple nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Martin, granddaughter, Chelsea Martin and brother, Gary Goodwin. support,” said San Benito County Business Council Executive Director Kristina Chavez-Wyatt Monday. “Basically, the goal is to express to the city council and their leadership staff that the work they’ve done over the years to restore this 400 block is absolutely the right direction.” The business council believes current plans for the vacant 400 block, which also includes condominiums and commercial space, will encourage job creation and smart growth. It also demonstrates to the community and investors the area is open for business, she said. “Where we’re coming from is: we want everyone to take a breath and look at the big picture of what this means for the past, present and future of our community as a whole,” Chavez-Wyatt said. Originally comprised of of retail buildings, the 400 block of San Benito Street was left devastated by the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Over the years, various ideas have been floated for the vacant space, including a cinema and performing arts complex. None of the plans came close to fruition, until recently, when a proposed donation of $900,000 to put towards a new headquarters for the Community Foundation was pledged by local benefactors Randy and Rebecca Wolf. Rebecca Wolf, who is vice chairwoman of the Community Foundation board of directors, said the development will help restore downtown Hollister. “The Community Foundation looks forward to building our new philanthropic center as part of the 400 block to support all our local nonprofits and our community,” said Wolf in an email. “We will be
sharing more information with our local news organizations soon.” Pinnacle Strategy President and Chamber of Commerce Board Member Victor Gomez reached out to the Free Lance Tuesday and suggested holding this story, as the Restore the 400 Block coalition would be putting together a press conference in the coming days. Chamber of Commerce CEO Juli Vieira said the chamber supported the 400 block development. “The Chamber isn’t just about tourism, but economic development in our community also,” Vieira said by phone Monday. “We have some areas open downtown, but they’re all large. We have some small businesses that want to come into the downtown area. This would give them a chance to start.” On August 4, Vieira sent out a Chamber newsletter that included links to the Restore the 400 Block petition and Facebook page. “It’s the Chamber’s place to look out for the local business and nonprofit community, their members, and what should be good for the community as a whole,” Vieira said. “I don’t see this as political. It’s being made into a political agenda, but I don’t feel it’s political. It’s what’s good for downtown and for the economic vitality of the downtown area.” Velazquez believes there is a conflict-of-interest behind this latest public relations move by the Community Foundation and its partners. “What’s important here are groups that receive money from the Community Foundation are involved and groups that are financially supported by the city are also involved, that being the Chamber and Hollister Downtown Association,” said Velazquez. The petition Velazquez submitted
to the Hollister City Clerk last month for verification would compel the city council to either withdraw the current proposal, reconsider it or place it on an upcoming ballot for a community vote. The city owns the 400 block parcel. The city is currently awaiting an opinion from the California Attorney General’s Office as to whether or not Velazquez’s petition would actually require council action. Velazquez has recused himself from all of the city’s 400 block decisions because he owns the neighboring Vault building. The Free Lance is still waiting on signature verification from the City Clerk. San Benito County Assistant Clerk-Recorder-Registrar of Voters Angela Curro said she received the 400 block petition from the city on July 20. The petition has been signature checked and official results were submitted to City Clerk Tom Graves on July 27. Curro explained the county registrar’s verification process. “When a petition is filed with a city, they send it to the county clerk or registrar for signature verification only,” Curro said. “All the county does is report back what those results are.” Petition signatures are checked against voter registration information. It starts with a random sample, Curro said. If that sample fails, then every signature is checked. Velazquez said he gathered an estimated 2,465 signatures, more than the 1,600 required for a referendum. As of Wednesday morning, The Restore the 400 Block coalition’s online petition gathered 199 signatures out of their goal of 3,000.

New four-way stop for Fifth and San Benito intersection CITY COUNCIL ACCEPTS RESULTS OF TRAFFIC STUDY Nicholas Preciado Reporter
The flashing red intersection at Fifth and San Benito streets is expected to become a permanent, four-way stop. The Hollister City Council accepted the results of a traffic operations analysis for the San Benito Street corridor at their Monday meeting. The study was approved on June 19 and prepared
by Hexagon Transportation Consultants, Inc. According to the study, the intersection operates at acceptable levels of service during morning and evening peak hours and thus does not warrant signalization. Replacing the signaled intersection with a four-way stop will have no adverse effect on the intersection, the study said. “What’s happened at Fifth and San Benito streets has changed downtown,” Hollister Mayor Ignacio Velazquez said during the meeting. “I can remember cars racing through there all day long running
the red light just trying to get to the next point as fast as they could. It’s changed downtown.” Additionally, the traffic analysis showed the intersection at Fourth and San Benito streets operates at an “unacceptable” level of service during both morning and evening peak hours. It recommended signal modification to improve traffic flow, which includes removing the existing signal poles and installing new signal equipment and poles with longer mast arms. Cost for this intersection is estimated around $175,000 and is eligible for fund reimbursement, according to the meeting’s staff report.

A taste of Hawaii is at Ohana Shave Ice in downtown Hollister. “We want to bring the flavors of the island to the mainland,” said Karina Hernandez, who with husband, Peter, opened the stylish eatery less than two weeks ago. The unique dessert is very different from a standard snow cone. “The ice is shaved rather than crushed so you get a cotton candy type of consistency,” said Karina Hernandez. “The syrup is then absorbed into the ice instead of draining to the bottom. We make our own simple syrup and use concentrates from Hawaii.” Tropical flavors include: guava, passion fruit, mango, lime and a twist on strawberry called Tigers Blood. “We also get the best quality purified water that is available and make our own ice from it,” said Karina Hernandez. To get an authentic Hawaiian shaved ice experience Karina Hernandez recommends including a scoop of vanilla bean or
macadamia nut ice cream with a drizzle of sweet cream on top, called a snow cap. “When you do that it creates a creamy consistency because the ice is so fine,” she said. Ohana Shave Ice sources from regional vendors, including Marianne’s Ice Cream. “We want to keep things fresh by introducing new ice cream flavors and new combinations depending on the season,” said Karina Hernandez. “We aim to offer new products as we move forward.” While on vacation in Hawaii the couple fell in love with the relaxed island culture and sweet, cool shaved ice. When they could not find a similar product back at home, they saw an opportunity to start a new business. “We began with a booth at the Hollister Farmers Market,” explained Karina Hernandez. “Then we started doing catering events. Then, slowly but surely, we were able to expand to a mobile trailer.” Earlier this year Ohana Shave Ice was a finalist at the Startup Challenge Monterey Bay, a regional competition and accelerator program for entrepreneurs. The top placement encouraged the couple to open a

ice in Hawaii, each tabletop is engraved with a word or sentence fragment that when put together reads, “sit back, relax, enjoy, you are on Hawaii time.” “We want to provide a fun and safe place for kids and families to visit in the downtown,” said Peter Hernandez. “We intentionally didn’t provide
Wi-Fi. We don’t want to see kids on their phones; we want to see them talking to each other.” Family is very important to the parents of three boys. “We wanted to reflect our family with our business, because family is everything to us. And that is what Ohana means,” said Karina Hernandez.

For the second year in a row, the Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival will be held at the San Benito County Historical Park in Tres Pinos. Starting Thursday, top California bluegrass bands will descend on the beautiful venue, giving attendees an opportunity to jam with their favorite musicians. “This festival is oriented towards camping and playing your own music,” said Michael Hall, president of the Northern California Bluegrass Society, which
hosts the 24th annual event. “It is very informal. At night, groups will play in the campground.” This year, 50 bands will perform on four different stages. On Saturday, the Honeysuckle Possums from Santa Barbara will inaugurate the late night stage at the dance hall. While 35 Years Of Trouble, a band named after the combined ages of its youth-filled roster, will kick-off the morning performances earlier that day. “The bands are all based in California,” said Hall. “At other festivals you’ll get very exciting bands from outside the state, but once they play they get back on their busses and they are off to
the next show. They are not hanging around.” This is not true for the Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival. “About 60 percent of the people who come play an instrument,” said Hall. “People show up partly to see and learn from other bands. In the evenings people will take out their own instruments and jam in various camp sites. Sometimes you will see about 50 different jam circles going on all over the place with musicians going from one circle to another. It’s a very social kind of music.” The four-day event will also feature workshops, a kids performance on Sunday and children’s activities.

“Christina is definitely naturally gifted like Maxine,” Chris said. “She is ultra motivated, super tough and very passionate about the sport.” Said Bradford: “Christina has got good genetics. Her mom has a degree in P.E., and her dad was a competitive weight lifter. All that stuff matters. She also trains hard without any issues. She never complains, and so these are all the things you look for in an athlete.” Chris and Maxine have created a nurturing environment for their daughter to grow at her pace—which just happens to be a fast one. Remember, you’re talking about the same girl who wakes up her dad to work out. “Christina has the perfect atmosphere,” Bradford said. “She’s got great parents, not some of the parents who can be over the top and basically ruin the child. That’s not the case here. They are firm but loving.” On the race course, Cunningham makes all the right moves. In BMX racing, the outcome is
often determined right out of the gate. Whoever leads off the start has a big advantage because races are chaotic yet controlled sprints, and it’s hard to overtake someone who has gotten out of the gate fast. “She already explodes (at the
start),” Bradford said. “She has a lot of maturity and is a pleasure to work with. She’s very intelligent and takes to coaching well. That’s why she’s got a huge future in the sport—because she understands racing and knows ➝ BMX, page 16

Every once in a while, Christina Cunningham—a fifth grader at Southside School—will wake up her dad, Chris, so they can start working out. What’s unusual about this? Christina is only 10 years old. And Chris is certainly no slouch, as he is a firefighter for the city of San Jose. But that speaks to the nature of Christina’s precociousness— and why an Olympic-pedigreed coach like Jerry Bradford said she seemingly has all the tools to develop into a future Olympian. Cunningham, who is coming off a fourth-place finish in her age group in the UCI BMX World
Championships in South Carolina, is a top-level factory rider for the Yess BMX team, which employs Bradford as a coach and manager. Bradford has coached a half-dozen Olympians, including Alise Post, who is a two-time Olympian and silver medalist in the 2016 Rio Olympics. “I was coaching Alise at the same age Christina is right now,” Bradford said. “There are a lot of similar comparisons going on there, and only time will tell. But as long as Christina loves the sport—and she does—she has a very bright future.” Bradford, who has a pretty sharp eye for picking out talent, listed several things that Cunningham has working in her favor, including intrinsic motivation, great racing instincts, genetics, and a loving family home. Cunningham’s parents happen to be physically strong and talented. Although Chris is a firefighter, he said Christina’s athleticism comes from her mom, Maxine, who is a P.E. teacher at San Benito High and a former three-sport standout.

After playing out the summer and weighing all his options, Marquez made a verbal commitment to play for the Division I program—he won’t be able to officially sign until Nov. 8—approximately two weeks ago. It was a dream come true for Marquez, who set his sights on reaching the college level at an
early age. His hard work made it happen. “Sometimes it’s still hard to believe,” he said. “It caught me by surprise because I hadn’t heard of the University of Seattle before this.” The Redhawks went 20-35-1 overall and 8-16 in the Western Athletic Conference last season. When the University of Seattle baseball program first started showing interest in Mason Marquez at a showcase tournament at the end of May, the San Benito High senior didn’t think much of it. After all, several college coaches have come up to Marquez after showcase games in the past, only to never make contact again.
So after Marquez talked with Seattle assistant coach Mike Nadeau, the Haybalers’ second baseman didn’t think much of it. “I wasn’t expecting much,” said Marquez, who played for Trosky Baseball this summer. But Nadeau continued to show up wherever Marquez was playing, mixing in texts and phone calls throughout the summer. That all led to the

“This year’s team had great chemistry, and they all came together and played for each other,” he said. “It was pretty gratifying to see that maturation from the team.” In the PGF National Championship title game, Salinas entered the bottom of the seventh inning with the score at 4-4. Ito reached on an error with one out before advancing to second on a Rossi groundout. Ramos delivered the game-winning hit, allowing Ito to score. Ito is the consummate pro’s pro, a heady player who delivers in the clutch and seemingly makes all the right decisions. Rossi carries those attributes as well, something that will come in handy when she arrives in Hawaii. Rossi first dreamed of playing college softball when she was 8 years old, and through the years she worked hard to become one of the top leadoff hitters in the Central Coast Section. “It took me a while to really believe I could play in college,” she said. “Growing up I saw the college players on TV, and I was really amazed to see how good they were. I didn’t think I could get to that level.” The recruiting process was a bit nerve-wracking, as Rossi had no offers until University of Hawaii coach Bob Coolen contacted her a couple of months before the start of her senior season. “It was kind of getting to the end of the line for me to sign

or the first time in history, a travel ball softball team from the South Valley and Central Coast has won a title at the Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF) National Championships at the 18-andunder level. The Salinas Storm 18s team— which featured four players from this year’s Haybalers squad— defeated Batbusters Gomes Clark 5-4 in the 18U Platinum B championship game on July 30 in Huntington Beach. It was a storybook ending, as the Storm won in walk-off fashion on a Noellah Ramos single that scored Balers junior Alyssa Ito with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning. As Ito crossed home plate, several of her teammates were already out of the dugout running onto the field in jubilation. “The girls showed a lot of raw emotion and excitement,” said Storm coach Curtis Heen, who is a longtime Hollister resident. “And for the coaching staff, it was a bit surreal.” The four players off this year’s San Benito High team that played for the Storm include Ito,
Brittnee Rossi, Makayla Johnson and Chloe Cortez. Rossi, an incoming freshman player at the University of Hawaii, had a standout summer season and PGF tournament. “Brittnee throughout the whole year was a steady contributor,” Heen said. “Some seniors who are going on to college either decide to take the summer off or take off tournaments, but she didn’t miss one tournament.” The Storm went 6-1 in the tournament, with Rossi hitting .407 for the week and around .400 for the entire season. “The success she had in high school she continued to the club travel ball season,” Heen said. Heen’s daughter, Callee, the former Balers standout who is entering her sophomore season at the University of Hawaii, served as an assistant coach this season. Rossi said this was a perfect way to end things before she goes on to play at the college level. “It was a great way to go out playing with these girls,” she said. “I’m really proud of them for stepping up against some great teams.” Curtis Heen said Cortez was a solid starter for most of the season, and Johnson played well whenever she got an opportunity for this powerhouse squad. Even though Heen said last year’s Storm team had more talent, this year’s squad blended together in beautiful harmony.

experience turned out to be a fruitful one. It only confirmed what many people already knew— that Cunningham is among the world’s best in her age category. “I was really happy with my performance,” she said. “I wanted to get out of the gate first, but some of the girls beat me down (the chute).” Cunningham combines
a competitive intensity that is balanced out by her love for the sport. Her favorite part about the World Championships— besides finishing fourth, of course—was meeting other riders from around the world. “I got to meet a lot of them and learned a lot,” she said. Cunningham traded jerseys with Australian
rider Portia Eden, the 2016 world champion. Cunningham showed a precociousness from an early age—at age 3 no less. That’s when Christina saw all of her dad’s motorcycles in the garage before asking if she could ride one or get into Motocross. “I’m like no way, but she was persistent,” Chris said. “I told her that she couldn’t even ride a bicycle
with training wheels, so at 3 ½ she talked me into taking the training wheels off her bike. I took them off knowing she might take a horrific fall. But after she sprints three or four laps around the Cerra Vista (Elementary School) basketball courts, she says, ‘Let’s go get our motorcycle.’” Instead, Chris allowed her daughter to get into
BMX, and her love for the sport has grown with each passing year. As a factory rider for Yess BMX, Christina gets all of her gear and entry fees paid for. In recent years, the Department has undertaken to develop a comprehensive plan for the effective delivery of Project water across the SacramentoSan Joaquin Delta in conjunction with the conservation and rehabilitation of the environment and species in and around the Delta. Currently, Project water is conveyed across the Delta through the channels of the river delta formed by the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers, as those channels have been modified over 150 years by the construction of levees, ship and other canals, flood protection channels, salinity gates and other facilities. The Department has approved the financing of the planning and design and, if and when appropriate, the acquisition and construction of conveyance facilities known as the “California WaterFix.” Broadly described, the California WaterFix would transport water from new intake points on the Sacramento River across the Delta by two underground tunnels running below the natural waterways of the Delta to export facilities at the southern edge of the Delta. The Department is authorized to carry out its various duties and functions in relation to the Project by the Central Valley Project Act (Cal. Water Code §§ 11100 et seq.) (the “CVP Act”) and the Burns-Porter Act (Cal. Water Code §§ 12930 et seq.), among other authorities. The Department is authorized to construct units of the “project” as that term is defined by the CVP Act, and to issue revenue bonds to pay the capital costs of those units. Among its authorities, Section 11260 of the CVP Act authorizes the Department to include the California WaterFix as one or more of the units “provided for in this chapter[;]” Section 11454 of the CVP Act authorizes the Department to “do any and all things which in its judgment are necessary, convenient, or expedient for the accomplishment of the purposes and objects of this part[;]” and Section 11700 of the CVP Act authorizes the Department to issue revenue bonds “[f]or the purpose of providing money and funds to pay the cost and expense of carrying out any of the objects and purposes of this part.” /// On July 21, 2017, the Department adopted resolutions authorizing, among other matters, the issuance of revenue bonds, in multiple series, the proceeds of which would be used to pay the costs of the planning, design, acquisition, and construction of the California WaterFix.
