Reviving a Russian River tradition
● Also, barrel racing isn’t as easy as it looks
By Christian Kallen It was an unexpectedly warm Sunday along the Russian River at Memorial Beach Regional Park on Labor Day weekend, and David and Kimberly Lockhart were glad they had decided to throw a party. Said David Lockhart, “I remember seeing photos of the historical bridge and then
1940s women [straddling] the wine barrel—and it’s just such an iconic image of the bridge.” Then he thought about “how cool it would be to do it now, while the river was full and the railroad bridge was still up.” So a couple of weeks ago they announced the “Goodbye Bridge Wine Barrel Races” party for — More on page 3

The fifth iteration of the unpronounceable HISFF, or Healdsburg International Short Film Festival, returns to Healdsburg the weekend of Sept. 25-27. As before, the centerpiece of the
festival is the films themselves, 57 short films from 17 different countries out of 398 submissions, highlighting a range of global talent. That’s a lot to take in in a single — More on page 4

Aug. 29 at the beach to try to replicate the iconic visual. They also knew this could be the last weekend that the historic Railroad Bridge—it’s to be taken down next summer—and the Memorial Bridge summer dam were both still in place. With their River’s Edge Canoe & Kayak property, and support from Moonlight and Fogbelt breweries, they re-enacted the historic riverside revelry as seen in museum photos (of which Henderson seems to have a collection). A patrol of energetic Boy Scouts crewed a heavily roped and knotted wood raft, River’s Edge friends and family filled an inflatable pink swan, and a dozen young folks straddled unsteady wine barrels as individual racers. “It felt like we were transporting back in time,” said Lockhart, still somewhat giddy two days later. “It was validating just to have people come and enjoy themselves. And it was such a beautiful day. It was clear and sunny, and … it just felt really nice.” Time however, has a way of moving its own way, in spite of our best efforts to correct or slow its pace. Railroad Bridge is scheduled to be demolished in 2027, if SMART’s plans are carried out, and Kim Lockhart for one is not too happy about it. “When I passed out flyers for the byebye bridge party, more often than not people were surprised to hear that the bridge is coming down next year,” she told the Tribune. “Their permit is still incomplete, so it hasn’t been approved yet. But it sounds
like they’re pulling the information for multiple permits and trying to get everything approved all at the same time.” Railroad Bridge is currently a threetruss span completed in 1921, though it may have been built on an older bridge. It features a “Camelback” truss design, arcing high over the railroad, and two smaller, squatter Warren trusses, similar to the style SMART has proposed for the eventually rebuilt bridge to carry the regional railway into Healdsburg and beyond. Since the Lockhart’s business, River’s Edge Kayak & Canoe, is located less than 50 yards downstream from Railroad Bridge, the couple has not only a financial interest in the bridge’s construction
but is motivated by accountability, Kim Lockhart said. “We’re not opposed to replacing the bridge. It’s not a question of if the bridge should be replaced. It’s about how it’s being done without public comment or awareness, that is the problem,” she said. “It will be low-water conditions and high-decibel noise from pile driving and jackhammers all season long,” she added. “What matters is that the public is given their legal right to weigh in on the construction instead of just having it happen without their knowledge.” For information visit sonomamarintrain.org/healdsburg.
TEAMMATES David and Kim Lockhart enjoy the afterglow of what may be Healdsburg’s last barrel race, held in the shadow of Railroad Bridge.

Film festival — Continued from page 1

‘AMERICAN DREAM’ Lili is an actress and singer in Iran, where women are forbidden from singing in public. When she and her boyfriend celebrate her birthday with a romantic date, what could go wrong? Find out Saturday at the 5pm block.
It’s difficult to pick favorites from the many films, but the Demorests have highlighted a few titles of special interest. Most local is Petaluma’s Sean Restivo, whose 15-minute documentary, Owl Hill, looks inside the owl boxes that Marin County preservationists use to protect the nocturnal predators. Owl Hill will show during the 1pm Sunday block. From much farther afield is an Irish comedy, Known to the Gardai, in which two local scallywags dare each other to commit an increasingly severe series of crimes. Some of the cast is expected to attend, adding further promise to the opening night screening, Friday at 7pm. From Iran comes American Dream, a romance in which a singer celebrates her
birthday with a date straight out of La La Land. But behind the dazzle, the film asks if love can truly survive when freedom is out of reach. American Dream is one of the films shown in the Women in Film block, at 5pm on Saturday night. Films range in duration. A micro-short of 41 seconds called The Great Distraction debuts during the Saturday night Student Films block at 7:30pm. The longest film, the 26-minute Magan’s Fare, about a ride-share driver’s dilemma of how far to go to help someone, plays at Friday’s kick-off screening. Coincidentally it features Barkhad Abdi, the Oscar-nominated pirate from the Tom Hanks film Captain Phillips, whose script by Billy Ray was also nominated for an Academy Award in 2013.
Those happy coincidences are among the reasons Kirk and Pamela Demorest keep undertaking this complex yet rewarding endeavor. “For us, it’s all about connection—filmmakers at every stage sharing their work with our community, all packed into one unforgettable weekend,” Pamela said. “It’s why our celebrity judges keep coming back.” A $100 all-films festival pass costs $100; each screening block is $20 ($10 for students). More details and tickets at healdsburgfilm.com.
IRISH HUMOR It isn’t for everybody, but the Irish seem to like it. In ‘Known to the Gardai,’ two local scallywags dare each other to commit increasingly severe crimes in a quick, 7-minute film. Shown opening night, 7pm.

sitting—we can thank Kirk and Pamela Demorest for doing that labor, though they spread it out over almost a year of screening. “We start when the last one is finished!” she has said. Yet despite all that viewing, she said, “I am truly amazed that people consistently make excellent short films.” Again this year, like last, the Short Film Festival takes place at the same time as the Healdsburg Festival of the Arts on Saturday, Sept. 26. In fact the Arts Festival welcomes the Film Festival into its festivities, which include blocking off Center Street and Plaza Street for most of Saturday. The film festival opens on Friday with a red-carpet kickoff screening at 7pm, followed by an “Opening Night Soirée” at Portalupi Wines at 8:30pm. A rooftop “Sweet and Uncorked” wine-and-desert mixer is lined up for Saturday at 8:15pm at Harmon Guest House, and the awards ceremony takes place at 5pm on Sunday. All that, plus a book signing with Billy Ray, the screenwriter of The Hunger Games and Captain Phillips. The “meet and greet” takes place Saturday at 11am at the Raven Theater, like nearly all HISSF events. It serves as a book signing in association with Copperfield’s Books for Ray’s new YA novel, Burn the Water. It also gives festival attendees a chance to hear more about Ray’s notable career in film. He is best known for his screenwriting work on major film projects including Captain Phillips, The Comey Rule, The Hunger Games and the upcoming The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. All six Hunger Games movies are based on the work of Suzanne Collins. This film is scheduled for release in November 2026. Ray will serve on the film festival jury for a second year, along with several returning judges including Emmy-nominated actor Ed Begley Jr., original SNL cast-member Laraine Newman, Emmy-winning actor Jeff Kober, and beatnik songwriters Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, among others. Returning this year is instantly recognizable character actor Jack McGee. Sometimes some of the jurors attend all or several of the film blocks, though others make their selections known through private screenings. The 57 film entries are organized into eight screening blocks of about two hours apiece over the three days of the festival. Some of them will be placed in special categories, such as Documentary, Women in Film (showcasing female-focused stories), Student and the first annual Cine Latine Spanish-speaking film block.
WRITER & JUROR Billy Ray, who wrote the screenplay for ‘The Hunger Games,’ now has a new, young-adult book coming out called ‘Burn the Water.’ He will hold a meet-and-greet at the Raven Theater at 11am on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Talented Actress Appearing in Healdsburg This Week. The Manhattan Stock Company, which is playing an engagement at the theater this week, is a very meritorious company and worthy of patronage. Miss Virginia Calhoun is an actress of considerable renown. She is the sister of Eleanor Calhoun, the famous actress, who is now in England, where she is a popular favorite. Miss Virginia Calhoun is a native daughter of California. She is a highly educated young lady, endowed with much literary talent, and is a fine conversationalist. She often contributes to the public press, and while visiting with her company in the Hawaiian Islands she was correspondent for the San Jose Mercury, furnishing many interesting articles to that journal. Miss Calhoun visited all of the Islands and the great volcano at
Kahului, a very interesting description of which she furnished for the columns of the Mercury. Miss Calhoun visited England, making quite a bit in London, and also played through the provinces. She has spent most of the past few years in Europe and the Eastern States following her chosen profession. There are some first-class people in Miss Calhoun’s company, and they are worthy of patronage. The play for to-night is “A Happy Marriage.” The low prices asked for admission will enable anyone to attend the performances. 75 years ago – September 13, 1951
Civil Defense Office Moved to New Location On Tuesday the local office of Civil Defense was moved from its location in the City Hall to an office in the Luciani Pump and Metal Company building, Redwood Highway North. The temporary phone number for the new location is 615W. Reason for the move to the new loca-
tion was the need for easier accessibility to the Defense office by Luciani, who is the local Civil Defense coordinator. The Civil Defense Office, this week, issued the following message to the people of the Healdsburg Township: Civil Defense is your assurance that a proper plan and organized group of teams will be ready to operate in the event of an extreme emergency. This emergency may arise from fire, earthquake or any other natural cause, or yet from the ever-present danger of attack by enemy action against our cities and homes in this Region 3 of the nine Bay Area counties. Your part in this insurance program is your willingness to serve by registering with the Civil Defense and Disaster Council so that your services may be utilized in the event of an extreme emergency. 50 years ago – September 9, 1976
City Says ‘No Way’ to Peninsula Housing It took the City Council only 12 minutes to dump any plans to convert prime agricultural land in the city’s Peninsula into housing Tuesday night. Led by Coun-
MISS VIRGINIA This 1901 photo of Virginia Calhoun is not from the Healdsburg Museum archives, but otherwise aligns well with her place in local history as an actress and writer.
cilman Robert Sauers, who said frankly that he was “unalterably opposed,” the council rejected a housing development on the 560-acre area which lies west of the Hwy 101 freeway between Westside Road, the Russian River and Dry Creek. John W. Ronayne, president of Ronayne Sales and Development Inc., of Walnut Creek, told the council, “Tell me if you don’t want me now, so I’ll know,’’ when he appeared to explain his proposal. Ronayne proposed 20 acres in single family residential development, and another seven acres for duplexes, although the duplexes had to be dropped from the start because they were to be built on land now in an agricultural preserve. The homes were to sell for $27,500 to $32,000. Sauers said development of the Peninsula is “not right in terms of soil or in terms of urban sprawl.” He said use of land north of the city is much better. He said he liked the idea of development of lower cost housing, but not on the Peninsula. “It’s the wrong place and I think it only fair to tell you that in the beginning,” he said. The council voted not to turn the Ronayne proposal over to the Planning Commission for study, thereby killing it. The Healdsburg Museum is open 11am to 4pm Wednesday-Sunday, and located at 211 Matheson St. healdsburgmuseum.org

REAL ESTATE
Decluttering: Short-term pain, long-term gain ● ‘It gives people a tremendous sense of peace and control’ By Janis Mara
I
f you’re selling your house, your car won’t fit in the garage or you can’t find anything amid all your stuff, it’s probably time to declutter. And if you are staging your home for sale with your own things, a possession-weight-loss program is absolutely mandatory. The first part of the process is usually hardest: Deciding what to keep and what to dump. The second part can be physically the most demanding, as the unwanted stuff has to be removed somehow. To get started, “Separate items into categories such as keep, donate, sell, recycle and trash,” said Kimberly Ward, a Bay Area real estate agent who has helped dozens of families declutter. Choosing what to discard can be agonizing. According to the experts, if you find yourself saying, “I might use this in X scenario in the future,” out it goes. That’s hoarder talk. W hen in doubt , con sider t he $20/20-minute rule recommended by professional organizers: If it fits within your budget, costs $20 or less and takes 20 minutes or less to replace, it can probably go. Once you decide to get rid of something, there are three broad categories: Sell, donate, or dispose. Selling may seem attractive at first. However, with lots of things, such
as books, you may not make that much money. And you will have to invest time and energy. Consult the sold and completed listings on eBay to get an idea of the value before deciding to sell. If you choose to donate, look into local “buy nothing” groups like the Freecycle Network. In some instances, all you have to do is leave the (clean, safe and functioning) item on your porch and a grateful neighbor will take it away. Or you can give it to an organization like Goodwill or the Salvation Army. If you’re recycling stuff or tossing it, hopefully your recycling or trash bins will accommodate it. If not, check with your garbage company; many have a set number of free curbside item pickups per year. If not, it’s off to the recycling center or the landfill. One of the big gest challenges of disposal can be getting the stuff to the curb, or into a vehicle, yourself. Often, you can recruit some friends to help. If you have bulky items like a sofa or piano, can’t cheaply access a truck or just aren’t up to it, check out a professional hauling service. Full-service junk removal and hauling companies will come inside your house, load your items and take them away. While the process can be stressful, once it’s done, there’s more space, it’s easier to find things and there’s a sense of accomplishment, Ward said. Also, “Decluttering gives people a tremendous sense of peace and control, especially during a move, which can feel incredibly overwhelming,” the Realtor said.

7:59am The Reporting Party (RP) on Monte Vista Avenue at University Street requested an officer to be in the area during school hours due to speeding vehicles. Dispatch said the patrol request would be made, but no commitment was promised. 12:16pm Officers contacted three people near a vehicle on Rosewood Drive. They appeared to be under the influence based on the way they walked around and acted disoriented. One person worked on the vehicle. An RP said the people yelled at someone. A 33-Year-Old (YO) man was cited for violation of probation. 3:44pm The RP said a man stole approximately $4,000 worth of jewelry from Gallery Lulo on Center Street. The RP indicated her workers saw the man around the Plaza. Officers searched the area and took a report. On Sept. 1, 2026, at 8:59pm, the Citrus Heights police department located the 30-YO suspect. The man was arrested for grand theft and burglary and transported to Sonoma County jail. 4:10pm The RP near the Roundabout on Healdsburg Avenue witnessed a rearend accident and believed the driver of one of the vehicles fled the scene. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.
