Things are taking shape for the 77th annual Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair, perhaps the most thoroughly Healdsburg event on the calendar. Between the culinary “Experience” of last weekend and the oncoming “Edge” of next month, it’s as if

history grabs us by the nape and says, “Pay attention!”

The animal showings began last week, when the HFFCF Horse Show trotted out onto the dusty oval of Hoofbeat Park. It will be followed this week by show animal judging; livestock, cake and barrel auctions; and— of course—the HFFCF Twilight Parade on May 21.

The parade will follow its normal route, which precipitates the usual road closures from the City of Healdsburg. “As part of the parade, we anticipate a significant influx of participants and spectators, necessitating

certain traffic arrangements to ensure a safe and successful event,” said Matt Milde, the city’s recreation supervisor.

The route of the parade, and the road closures, will be familiar from past years. It is staged east of Fitch on the residential streets Tucker, Hayden and Mason, then at 6pm launches its circum-downtown march on East Street in front of St John’s Church. Where’s the party? Everyone in Healdsburg knows the answer to that—it’s at the Plaza, every Tuesday at 6pm. Long known by the direct, unglamorized name as Tuesdays in the Plaza, the summertime music series starts just after Memorial Day and runs to the end of August. This year those dates are May 26–Aug. 25.

Last week Matt Milde, the city’s recreation supervisor, created an impromptu “reveal” video for Facebook to list the 10 bands that will perform at this year’s Tuesdays in the Plaza series. Erica Guiterrez, from Corazón Healdsburg, helped with the translations and announcement.

The rundown of the list, in front of a burbling fountain and the Gazebo, covered the high-

ly anticipated bands and performers coming to town, starting next Tuesday, May 26.

The music series isn’t quite as time-honored as a Fourth of July parade, or even the Twilight Parade this week. It’s only been a tradition for about 25 years, bringing weekly live music to the downtown square, but it has turned into a major social event. Friends and neighbors gather at impromptu picnic spots beneath a palm or pine to share food, beverages (usually wine) and conversation, or to dance with abandon in front of the Gazebo stage.

Sources remind us that prior to the introduction of the event, the Plaza was often a hangout for bike clubs, and not always a safe place in days gone by. The Hells Angles were a regular presence in the 1960s, and one particular — More on page 5

Tuesdays in the Plaza

For the first time this summer, the city’s Tuesday concerts take over the historic Plaza from 5-8pm for a picnic party and dance. Opening the season is the Sun Kings, the popular Beatles-era tribute band. Food trucks open at 5pm, music starts at 6pm, picnicking and dancing encouraged.

At the fairgrounds at Rec Park, parade awards will be given, but the Country Fair will have already begun earlier in the day, with sheep and goats, small animals like rabbits and poultry, and garden barrel planting and judging. The Swan Brothers Circus, too, will start its performance schedule this same evening, along with live music from DJ Uncle Paul on the stage near the baseball field. A regular midway of food and game booths provides a true country fair experience, as well as a revenue source both for social and school clubs.

Other HFFCF events include Friday’s animal shows and judging—at 8am 4-H Swine Showmanship, at 11am the Dog Showmanship and the “small animal round robin” at 1pm. The big creatures show up at 3pm for the 4-H Beef Showmanship show, and the Adult Showmanship for sheep and swine at 5pm. The “round robin” for large animals happens early the next morning, Saturday. Other similar country fair exhibits and competitions take place throughout the fair’s two full days, culminating on Saturday afternoon with the Livestock Auction.

Livestock Auction

This year about 285 market animals will be auctioned off. For many, that event at the Rec Park grandstands and on the baseball diamond, an annual irritation to the Prune Packers, is the Grand Finale of the Healdsburg Fair. “As the Auctioneer’s voice fills the arena and the paddles fly, you can feel the buzz and excitement in the air,” previews the HealdsburgFair.org website.

“The grandstands are packed with multiple generations of families, folks representing local businesses and organizations, community members, friends, and visitors alike — all there to offer a show of support for all the exhibitors who proudly showcase the projects they work so diligently on throughout the year.”

Past livestock auctions have raised between $800,000–$1.2 million.

Greyhound track and field athletes made a good showing at the North Coast Section’s Redwood Area meet, held over the weekend at Santa Rosa Junior College. Some 30 high schools participated from throughout the North Bay, resulting in several local student-athletes making the cut for the NCS Meet of Champions (MOC) next weekend.

The high point of Healdsburg’s success was literally that, a personal best and new school record high jump of 6 feet 8 inches by sophomore Teague Jasper. The sophomore has been winning this event all spring, usually with jumps of 6 feet 6 inches, though he set his previous best on April 11 at the Arcadia Invitational with a 6-foot-7-inch jump.

His efforts to reach 6 feet 8 inches finally paid off on May 11 at SRJC. Video of the jump, available on the Athletic.net website, shows him taking an easy, then faster lope to the bar, making a graceful backflip over it, with self-congratulatory fist pumps when he clears it.

The mark is significant in Healdsburg history, too. In the northeast corner of the Plaza, a monument to the town’s Olympic athletes includes a plaque for Healdsburg’s Edward L. Beeson. In 1914, while a student at UCB, he set a world high-jump record of 6 feet 7 and 5/16 inches that stood until 1924.

Racing the Clock

Other local athletes who placed well enough at the NCS area championships to earn a pass to next weekend’s NCS

meet were freshman Phoenix De Maria Nall in the boys 800m run, where he came in second, and senior Jake McWilliams finishing fourth in the same race.

Track coach Kate Guthrie, who just last November saw several of her cross country runners make it to the CIF state championship, endorses the idea of returning this spring for track. She singled out a couple runners who have caught her attention in the last few weeks.

“Phoenix De Maria Nall’s 800m performance was truly exceptional. His time currently ranks him as the fastest freshman in California in the 800m this season, and the third-fastest freshman in the nation. For such a young athlete to compete with that level of composure and execution in a championship setting is incredibly exciting for our program.”

Two sophomores, runners Lucas Welty in third place (9:33.07) and Domenico Cornilson in fifth (9:42.04), advanced to the MOC in the Boys 3200m. Again, Guthrie added context to the results that Cornilson has shown.

“Domenico has made major breakthroughs this postseason and continues to shine in championship competition with huge PR performances to advance through qualifying rounds,” she said.

“To put his improvement into perspective, last year he ran 10:52.77 in the 3200m, and last weekend he ran

9:42.04—an improvement of more than 70 seconds in one year. That performance put him in position to qualify for the NCS Meet of Champions and represents an extraordinary amount of dedication and development.”

The boys 4x400m relay team of De Maria Nall, Jack Beckman, Cayson Hagen and McWilliams finished seventh with a time of 3:30.62, which could earn them a trip to the MOC too. “They actually ran their best performance of the season,” pointed out Guthrie. “They are still in contention for one of the next three at-large qualifying spots based on times from the other area meets feeding into MOC. We should know within the next few days whether they will advance.”

The MOC for the northern part of the state will take place May 22-23 at Dublin High School. The following weekend, May 30-31, the state CIF State Track championship will be held in Clovis, in Fresno County.

location in town attracted them almost as much as the bars, the fountain in the Plaza. “They kind of took over that part of the Plaza. There would be biker chicks taking sponge baths in the fountain,” the Healdsburg Museum’s Holly Hoods told a reporter in 2018.

Continues the story, by Marie Butler, “A concerted effort by the city and chamber of commerce in the 1980s birthed a redevelopment agency, which helped jumpstart the languishing downtown. Now, tasting rooms, shops and award-winning restaurants ring the Plaza.”

Now, too, the wine is more likely to be a curated vertical tasting than a jug, but the desired result is the same: a convivial gathering of the community to share an evening of live music together. Plaza Street is closed to traffic between Healdsburg Avenue and Center Street so the food trucks can set up in time to open at 5pm. Music starts at 6pm and goes to 8pm, though the wind-down period can last a song or two. In previous years alcohol consumption was rigidly cut off at 8pm, but several years ago the City Council decided to loosen the consumption rules.

Who’s Playing the Plaza?

This party starts next week, Tuesday, May 26, with the arrival of The Sun Kings —one of the most in-demand Beatles bands around. Their tag line is “As Nature Intended,” picked up from an unofficial release of the Get Back sessions—just four guys playing their hearts out for a small audience, crafting the magic that still casts a spell on listeners. The Sun Kings do not imitate the Beat-

les, cut their hair to match or don spectacles, but play their roles as musicians first. Even former Rolling Stone editor Ben Fong-Torres likes them.

Subsequent Tuesday performers include Rocio y su Sonora (June 9), a cumbia band led by the charismatic singer Rocio who has earned a loyal audience in Healdsburg with almost-yearly appearances. The next week (June 16) Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers bring an audience-engaging performance of jazz and swing as part of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival this year.

County music plants its flag on July 14 when Dustin Saylor and the Stowaways, the same band that teaches line dancing at Coyote Sonoma every month, take the stage. One can imagine the footwork at the Gazebo lawn that night: wear closedtoe shoes at the least. Not to be outdone, the Caribbean reggae band Sky Eyes, a well-traveled “music in the park” group whose material runs from roots reggae to hip-hop, comes to town June 30.

A blues theme runs through the Tuesdays menu, too. It’s kicked off by the funk-and-soul show of the Ariel Marin Band (June 2) and continues with the roots-blues-rock Shawn Jones Band on June 23. Chicago blues is represented by none other than Ali Kumar, a traditional harpist with a Bollywood vibe, on July 7.

There are other acts, 14 in all—a tribute band called Playing the Dead on July 28, Top 40s pop from Cassie B on Aug. 11 and Banda Potrero on Aug. 18. The season ends on Aug. 25 with none other than Super Diamond, a tribute not only to Neil Diamond but to the Healdsburg Museum’s 50th anniversary celebration.

GERALD “JERRY” KEITH SKINNER

May 24, 1937 – April 30, 2026

Gerald “Jerry” Keith Skinner passed away on April 30, 2026 at the age of 88. Jerry was born in Oakland, CA, on May 24, 1937 and raised in El Cerrito, CA, by Joe and Ellen Skinner. He attended San Jose State University where he met his wife of 64 years, Sharron Colombero of Mt. Shasta, CA. Jerry and Sharron were married in Mt. Shasta in 1961 and experienced life to its fullest, including traveling through Europe for one year in a Volkswagen van. Upon returning to California they finally settled in Sweetbriar, CA, where they raised their two children, Kirsten and Brady, and created a beautiful home and lifelong memories together.

Jerry worked as an educator for over 30 years, primarily at Dunsmuir Elementary School and finished with his final year at Castle Rock Elementary School. Jerry loved both teaching and forming relationships with community members and students with the intent of making the world a better place. Both Jerry and Sharron retired in 1993. In 1997 they moved to Healdsburg, CA, and continued to spend and enjoy time in Sweetbriar. Jerry also spent several years working as a Sommelier for Foppiano Winery in Healdsburg—a role which allowed him to make new friends in just a few ounces.

Jerry had an infectious personality and if you met him, you remembered him. He brought awareness and authenticity to every conversation and genuinely cared about every person he interacted with. Jerry loved his family, friends and Sweetbriar. He may be gone but never forgotten. Jerry is survived by his wife Sharron; daughter, Kirsten; son, Brady; daughter in law, Jennifer; and his two grandchildren, Sofia and Danielle.

There will be a Celebration of Life on July 2, 2026 at Jubilee Railroad (formerly Railroad Park) from 2:00pm-4:00pm. All who knew Jerry are welcome.

Monday, May 4

4:55pm Twelve people were drinking beer in front of one of the emergency exit doors at True West Film Center. The Reporting Party (RP) requested that police ask them to move, but the RP did not want to file trespass paperwork at this time. Officers contacted the people and they moved along.

9:47pm A city ordinance violation officer asked people to leave Plaza Park on Healdsburg Avenue.

Tuesday, May 5

9:44am A man loitered in front of Powell Avenue Laundry on Powell Avenue. The RP wanted an officer to let the man know that he was not allowed inside the business due to a theft case. Officers met the man at CVS and reminded him that there was trespass paperwork filed against him and he was not allowed at the laundromat.

10:17am Two people were near the Toy Chest on Center Street blocking the door. The RP wanted the people trespassed from the property. An officer and the city therapist contacted the people, who moved along.

1:02pm The RP said an intoxicated man and an intoxicated woman screamed at each other in West Plaza Park on North Street. There were two bottles of wine near them. A second caller said the man headbutted the woman.

A 49-Year-Old (YO) man was arrested

said the vehicle did not stop, and she believed there was video surveillance. The RP did not want criminal prosecution but wanted the driver’s insurance information. An officer obtained surveillance from HJH which showed the juvenile on the scooter who failed to stop at the stop sign and went into traffic. The information was relayed to his parents.

1:59pm The RP on North Street said his mother-in-law moved on March 30-31, 2026. After the move, the woman noticed her jewelry box had been tampered with and her wedding rings worth approximately $9,000 were missing. The moving company was Betsy’s Moving Company out of Santa Rosa. The RP did not believe there was surveillance video, and the thief was not seen taking the rings. A report was filed with the mother-in-law’s new local police department in Daly City.

6:41pm The RP on Maxwell Street wanted an officer to assist the RP with fraud and cybercrime issues. An officer met with the RP and an incident number was provided.

Thursday, May 7

and brought to county jail for public intoxication, domestic violence and resisting arrest.

4:39pm The RP on Ward Street at Healdsburg Avenue said a truck almost turned into the RP’s vehicle when leaving Fincher’s Auto. After the RP honked, the suspect vehicle tailgated the RP on Healdsburg Avenue while honking and flashing hazards. Subsequently, the truck sped through back streets at approximately 60 to 80 mph. Officers were unable to respond due to a priority incident.

6:17pm The RP said a city ordinance violation occurred daily on Ward Street when workers operated a tractor after 6pm. Officers were delayed due to another incident. When officers responded, there was no work happening.

Wednesday, May 6

10:18am The RP said an accident occurred on April 26 at World Gym on Healdsburg Avenue. The other party fled, but the RP obtained the contact information from the gym. The RP tried to contact the other party without success. An officer responded and oversaw the exchange of information.

10:59am An unwanted person who had previously been trespassed from the property was at a business on Center Street. An officer and the city therapist responded and advised the man that he was not allowed to be there. The man complied and moved along.

12:38pm The RP said that on May 5, 2026, her son rode his electric scooter near Healdsburg Junior High School (HJH) on Grant Street and was hit by a vehicle. The student was taken to the hospital and evaluated for a minor shoulder and head injury. The RP

6:16am The RP said a sexual assault occurred on Montage Way on March 20. The RP feared retaliation. The RP sought advice from a lawyer and was advised to follow up with law enforcement. A report was taken and an investigation is ongoing.

10:25am The RP, the manager at a pet boutique on Center Street, wanted an officer to respond regarding a trespasser. The RP stated the same person was on the property on May 6 and was not arrested. He was back and disturbed the landscaping by moving rocks. The 42-YO man was arrested and brought to county jail for violation of probation, trespassing and resisting arrest.

12:19pm The RP on Washington Court requested a fraud report. Several days earlier, the RP’s computer had died. She used her phone to log into her Poshmark account. She was notified to put in further information. Her PayPal account was subsequently used to purchase $3,000 in cryptocurrency. A report was taken.

5:06pm The RP said a vehicle crashed head-on into the bridge on Healdsburg Avenue. An officer responded and the driver was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. The driver was an elderly woman with heart issues.

8:19pm A road-rage incident occurred near W.C. Sanderson Ford on Healdsburg Avenue. A driver threatened the RP and asked if the RP had been to prison. The other driver stated he had seen him around before leaving the scene. The RP subsequently looked for the other driver. Dispatch advised the RP that there were no criminal threats made and to stop looking for the other driver for the RP’s safety. An officer spoke with the RP and gave him advice.

Friday, May 8

3:11pm Vandalism to a vehicle occurred on Sherman Street. A report was taken.

4:52pm Fraud occurred at BMO Bank on Center Street. The RP had paperwork from the bank documenting the fraud. An officer contacted the RP and took a report.

5:26pm A neighbor saw a person on Front Street near the railroad tracks in violation of a court order. The person was intoxicated. Officers arrested the 40-YO man and brought him to county jail for violation of a court order.

6:47pm A man and woman at Healdsburg Veterans Memorial Beach screamed at each other and drove erratically with their doors open. They subsequently parked at the park entrance. Officers arrived and contacted the people. The man was released from the scene. The 52-YO woman was arrested and brought to county jail for public intoxication. A report was taken for Driver Risk Inventory.

Saturday, May 9

11:44am The RP said a man on Westside Road at Kinley Drive rode a bike with another bike on his shoulder. The caller was transferred to Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. The 18-YO bike rider was arrested for resisting arrest and contempt of court. He was taken to Healdsburg General Hospital for medical clearance before being brought to county jail.

12:55pm A woman at Dollar Tree on Vine Street threatened to “clean the shelves of the store.” She did the same thing on May 8. The woman left when the RP called the police. The RP was given advice about the trespassing process.

2:40pm The RP said there was a possible drunk driver near Healdsburg Bar & Grill on Healdsburg Avenue. The RP said the person was in a certain car usually driven when drinking. An officer searched the area and was unable to locate the vehicle. The California Highway Patrol was notified.

4:06pm The RP at Plaza Park on Healdsburg Avenue said a person camped under the Gazebo with two bicycles. An officer responded and advised the person about the relevant city ordinance. The person was asked to move along.

6:44pm A woman on Grove Street threatened property damage. The RP was offered contact with an officer, but the RP stated the situation was not that serious. Attempts were made to clarify the nature of the threats, but the RP was dismissive and said he would call back if necessary. The RP refused to provide his name and the woman’s name. The RP was told about the Family Justice Center.

Lucius to light up the Ramble

● ‘Girl-group revivalists’ on the bill with Spoon, others

For the past decade-plus, Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe have balanced roles as background vocalists for hire in addition to being one half of the group Lucius— guitarist Peter Lalish and drummer Dan Molad complete the band.

Laessig and Wolfe have recorded and toured with a dizzying array of artists, from Roger Waters and John Legend to Sheryl Crow and the Killers. In 2022, the band raised its profile considerably with the release of Second Nature, their third non-self-released studio album, which was co-produced by Dave Cobb and Brandi Carlile.

The band took time in 2023 to take stock of the decade anniversary of their second studio album, 2013’s Wildewoman This moment allowed the band’s current selves to have a conversation with their past selves.

“We realized we hadn’t listened to the album for almost a decade,” Laessig said in a recent interview. “Listening back to it, we realized what the record sounded like. It was like, ‘I don’t sing that harmony any more’ or ‘I don’t even remember the last time I sang that harmony.’”

So the current group decided to re-record the album, and in 2024 Lucius released the new version as Wildewoman (The New Recordings)

do-it-yourself spirit to the project was deciding to have drummer Molad produce the self-titled album and record the songs at his Los Angeles-area home studio and Altamira Sound studio in the L.A. suburb of Alhambra.

“Danny kind of understands our musical language like nobody else. It cuts out a lot of translating and time,” Laessig said. “It was also the first time he, Jess and I wrote a bunch of songs together from the beginning of the song. That was a great experience. Pete Lalish lives in Portland, and he came up a bunch, too. It was a great experience.

“It just felt right and like home. We’re all just in that stage of life where we’re getting married, buying houses and having babies, and are just in that sweet spot right now. That’s kind of where the record came from,” Laessig added.

Although much of the new album is self-contained, the relationships the band has made with other artists naturally bled into the recording process. Among those old friends who checked in were War On Drugs guitarist Adam Granduciel, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes and singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham. These cameos played into the vibe of oneness that came out of this new batch of songs.

“We thought it would be nice to bring some of what the road taught us over time back to this particular record,” Laessig said, regarding the decision to record and release the new version. “It was fun. Some of the things were newer arrangements of the song and some of the things were just pretty true to the original, but with a couple of tweaks that were more road-informed.

“When we decided to re-record Wildewoman, that kind of solidified for us that we were missing that feeling of hope within our band, the way we started and the nature of it just being us together creating,” Laessig continued. “We had been talking a bit about coming back together, just the four of us, and doing a record that we had done the way we did for Wildewoman and the early days stuff. This was how it worked so well the first time and how good it felt.”

And as it turned out, the decision to re-record that 2013 collection of songs created a more far-reaching effect than merely being a walk down memory lane. It had a direct impact on how the band approached the eponymous album, Lucius , released in May 2025. What also helped bring back the in-house,

“Having these guests played into our favorite part of this overarching feeling of comfortability and familiarity,” Laessig said. “Just having Danny behind the wheel and knowing our instincts and his knowing where we might be trying to [go] with what we’re trying to explain, having that level of communication was the best part and it was really fun—just making music with your friends again.”

This sense of fun and unfettered creative abandon is one hallmark of Lucius’ live shows. Prone to donning matching wigs and outfits, Laessig and Wolfe are often mistaken for being twins. On top of the flawless harmonies they deliver, longtime fans have learned not to bat an eyelash when the duo busts out matching “keytars.” It’s this kind of spontaneity Laessig nonchalantly mentions when asked what fans should look forward to on the group’s current tour.

“Folks coming out to see us can expect a [fiery] show,” Laessig said. “As always, we have small, intimate moments where we come together as just a stripped-down band … acoustic. It’s just us and the audience, and then there are other moments with lots of rocking out, big sounds, synths and psychedelia. It’ll be a dynamic show.”

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING REGARDING THE ADOPTION OF FY 2026-27 WATER RATES AND THE FY 2026-27 OPERATING AND CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT BUDGET

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN to citizens served by SWEETWATER SPRINGS WATER DISTRICT that on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m. or shortly thereafter, during the regular meeting of the Board of Directors at the Sweetwater Springs Water District, 17081 Hwy. 116, Ste. B, Guerneville, California 95446, the Board will discuss and hear comments on Resolution 26-03, Adopting FY 2026-27 Water Rates, and on Resolution 26-04, Adopting the FY 2026-27 Operating and Capital Improvement Budget.
