Misguided Please tell me you were playing a prank on your readers� (“Modern Whirl,� Letters, Dec. 5). I had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn’t April Fools Day. Much as I would love to remain in
denial that one of your “white, male� readers would get so defensive about Tom Tomorrow’s brilliant wit, I must concede that these backward views on race and sex still exist. Please, Mr. Stout, get out from your unnecessary defensive shield and understand that this country/world is still controlled by white males and their many unwitting enablers. Look at the faces of those in control in the dominant culture to understand where change is needed. If you are an inclusive human being, that will be noted and understood by those working hard for equality and toward a more inclusive world. There is no need to convince anyone as your actions speak the loudest. The destructive policies of inequality from racism, sexism and classism stem from the power relationships in this country/ world. Come join us in doing the hard

You
can’t just distribute tacky brochures to convention delegates or write business journalism about how much office space is available. That won’t explain anything. To recap 2012, aside from writing my 400th straight column in this very space, what stood out above all else was an understanding of the San Jose condition through a harmonization of opposing forces: highbrow/lowbrow, urban/suburban, art/science, East/West. It did not manifest itself in that fashion every single week, but it was always there beneath the surface. Many local folks did good this year. Silicon Valley strategist Sheridan Tatsuno wrote a book about growing up in San Jose. Another native, Thollem McDonas, wrote about his life as a peripatetic musician for The Deep
anthology. Listening Institute’s new anthology Artwise, Bruni opened up a new gallery in Willow Glen, while over in Santa Clara, the Triton Museum’s Preston Metcalf lectured on hidden symbols in pre-modern art. Our most famous esotericists, the Rosicrucians, allowed their park to host exotic tree tours. When it comes to sports, the San Jose Earthquakes broke a world record for the largest number of folks participating in a stadium groundbreaking. Several columns emerged documenting San Jose’s rich history of the world’s game and how the old league in the 1970s helped launch a youth soccer explosion, the aftershocks of which still resonate. But in particular, travel is what often facilitates new ways of confronting one’s local condition, and 2012 provided two distinct scenarios where that occurred in this column. The first one emerged via the triumvirate of Steve Caballero, Metallica and Tony Alva in Alva’s art gallery in L.A.’s Little Ethiopia neighborhood. In that column, the anti-man-about-
town recalled how, in 1985, the only folks in high school who appreciated his Metallica shirt were the skaters, thanks to Caballero’s influence at that time. And now, 27 years later, there they all were—skate legends and Metallica—in the same gallery, at the same time. The mind-blowing circle of events enabled the columnist to dislodge negative imprints from high school and the healing came from within. While that scenario allowed the narrator to expunge the suffering from his high school days in San Jose, a later trip to the Banff Centre in Alberta subsequently helped banish some repressed suffering from his college days in San Jose. That is, his rebellion against academic compartmentalization at SJSU came full circle at the Banff Centre, where such rebellion is emphasized and supported. He first traveled there in 1995 and then went back earlier this year, everything coming full circle in the process. Likewise, the healing came from within. In both of those columns, the pillars of self, time and space underwent a profound transfiguration with San Jose as the mystical vortex. I probably could have smoked DMT-laced cigarettes and momentarily achieved the same effect, but writing columns works much better. All of which means, in 2012, I needed no more proof that the past, present and future of San Jose continue to expand and contract like a rubber band, merging together into one timeless “now” process. Concerning the past, one of the city’s most treasured historians passed away earlier this year and was enshrined in this column. Jack Douglas was perhaps the last of his generation of beautifully cantankerous researchers who gave so much to this town by writing about its history for decades. Concerning the future, the ZERO1 Art Biennial erupted again, interconnected with a slew of projects, conversations, installations and artist residencies that took place for most of the year, all seeking the meaning of Silicon Valley. And just last week, San Francisco 49er Vernon Davis opened up an art gallery and said he was proud to be in “one of America’s future cities.”

It is, in fact, as though two different restaurants were sharing the same building. There is the pho restaurant—which is an actual sit-down Vietnamese restaurant with waiters and a diverse and expansive menu—and then there is a frozen yogurt restaurant, which is a self-service stand with several flavors and a topping bar all next to the cash register. The Froyo and toppings are 30 cents an ounce. My personal favorite flavor is the avocado. The odd inclusion of frozen yogurt, to the point of even weaving it into the name, raises the question: Can they actually make some good pho? Indeed they can—with a lot of different variations. There are three full menu pages of beef, chicken and vegetable options. The small bowl is $6.75, while the large is $7.75. I ordered the Thai (rare steak), which came highly recommended. The soup was very brothy and heaping with cilantro. Combined with the thick, chewy rice noodles and the rare steak, which came in razor thin strips, it made for a very filling, satisfying meal. There were many other Vietnamese options besides pho. Personally, I liked the vermicelli dishes, with pork and egg roll being my plate of choice. It comes with one long pork egg roll cut into three slices and a healthy serving of fajita strips of pork (marinated in oyster sauces and soy sauce), all served over a large bowl of vermicelli pasta (Asian style, which is made of rice and is much thinner than the Italian kind). It also served with cabbage, cilantro, cucumber and jicama. For a particularly succulent dinner, the Bo Luc Lan, for $10.95, is a good choice. On a still sizzling skillet, you are served several cubes of beef, which have been coated in A1 steak sauce and Teriyaki sauce, along with slices of bell peppers and onions. The meal comes with a heaping dish of garlic rice, a small salad and a bowl of broth. It is big enough for two people, if not more. The appetizer list includes salads, pot stickers, fried chicken, calamari and a variety of spring rolls. The Thit Nuong Cuon (grilled barbecue pork roll) is a great starter, with six spring rolls filled with pork, marinated similarly to the vermicelli dinner, noodles and lettuce. It features a sweet peanut dipping sauce, with actual broken peanut pieces sprinkled on top. At the end of the meal, a cup of frozen yogurt really does hit the spot. The interior has a distinct retromoderne vibe, with red vinyl chairs in Monsanto House of the Future styles and tables decked out in red swirly designs like the kind found on ’50s-vintage kitchenette sets. The result is sleekly comfortable although not homey—it’s not the kind of place to park yourself all afternoon. I imagined idling over an espresso between flights at a La Dolce Vita–era airport. Large high-concept photos culled from Lavazza’s famous fashion calendars dominate the walls. In addition to expressos, cappuccinos and lattes, Lavazza boasts a long menu of more exotic, flavored coffee drinks. The Bicierin comes in an elegant glass cup with stainless-steel handle and base, and features carefully poured layers of espresso, hot chocolate and heavy cream—beautiful to look at but a bit too sweet for an afternoon refresher. It would be better as a night cap. The Croccantino, which gilts a shot of espresso with caramel, brittle pieces and whipped cream, is a kind of miniature sundae. When the weather heats up, Lavazza also specializes in whipped and iced coffee drinks, as well as various fruit smoothies and crushes. I turned my coffee break into a light lunch from the surprisingly robust cafe menu. The light, toasty sliced-meat sandwich was accompanied by an excellent, piquant green salad with a peppery balsamic dressing. To chase some of the chocolate taste from the Bicierin, I stopped back inside to admire the gleaming espresso machines and order a latte to go (beans in bulk are also available). It came a trifle too hot but with an elaborate design of nesting hearts drawn through the foam—the mark of an attentive barista.—Michael S. First, know that there are levels of sweetness when it comes to sparkling wine and that bottles are usually labeled according to such levels. Brut sparkling wine has little or no sweetness. Extra brut wines are even drier. Confusingly, extra dry refers to sparkling wine that is a bit sweeter than ones labeled brut. Sweeter still are sparkling wines labeled sec and dry followed by sweet, dessert wines labeled demi-sec and doux. Second, note that a lot of countries make great sparkling wines. There is Champagne, made in the namesake region of France and generally regarded as the best sparkling wine around. Of note are the sparkling wines made in Spain and Italy—namely Cava and Prosecco, respectively—and their growing popularity due to their affordability and delightful flavor characteristics. Sparkling wines from Portugal and Germany are called Espumante and Sekt, respectively. There are also stellar sparkling wines from California’s Napa and Sonoma counties. With a so many options out there, be sure to have fun hunting for the ones that most pique your interest at the various wine stores and bars throughout the South Bay. Artisan Wine Depot in downtown Mountain View is a great place to start thanks to their wide range of selections and knowledgeable, friendly staff. Third, sparkling wine is served chilled, but for particularly fine sparkling wines, be sure to serve them a bit closer to room temperature to fully bring out the aromas and flavors. Lastly, consider the sparkling wine offerings at the various South Bay wineries, such as KIRIGIN CELLARS and Fortino Winery both in Gilroy, and GUGLIELMO WINERY in Morgan Hill. Here’s a sweet, flavorful tip: mix the sparkling wine from Kirigin Cellars with their popular Vino de Mocha—a dessert wine with strong chocolate and coffee flavors. While still only 17, Ryan Schmale, a.k.a. That Ghost, had already selfreleased three albums (on which he played every instrument). That Ghost is in the same spirit as the beautifully imperfect four-track recordings of ’90s-era Guided by Voices, Sebedoh and every band on K Records. The only thing missing was the tape hiss. In 2008, now 18, Schamle got signed by indie label Twosyllable Records and continued to self-record more of his earnest, drunken, distorted folk records, only now to a wider audience. His latest recording, the
Rosalind EP, breaks the mold a bit. It’s It’ oddly ddl morose andd hhaunting, ti compared to the fun garage-rock sound that dominated his early work, though it’s still every bit as lo-fi. (AC)

They mix in some ska, too, but like Operation Ivy, even their ska is punk. Caps also understand the second rule of punk: When onstage, act like lunatics. Their bass player (who

overcompetent math-rockers, San Jose’s A Yawn Worth Yelling are some serious pop craftsmen. Not just that but they are some downright incredible singers. Their gorgeous, near-constant vocal harmonies disguise how strange the guitar parts are, making them some sort of alternate-universe pop band. They’ve also got some pronounced rhythms, which are influenced heavily by world beat—which almost competes with the whole math-rock thing more than their penchant for pop songwriting. But it’s these creative contradictions that make them such a pleasure to listen to. (AC)

The Ghost of Wrights have really shown some maturity in their music this past year. They were always good—as a quirky, indiefolk, dulcimer-driven band—but their latest recording sessions fuse elements of psychedelic and post-rock too, with them jamming out for nine minutes at one point. Oh, don’t get me wrong, it’s still indie-folk, though it doesn’t have the same quirky They Might Be Giants–inspired sound as it had before. It’s serious, moody and contemplative. They do, however, still have the dulcimer. Considering what a hodgepodge of styles these new songs are, it really makes you wonder what they’ll come out with next. (AC)

One might feel some kind of chest-flutter for an instant during “I Dreamed a Dream” in memory of Susan Boyle’s touching forcefulness, or try to respect the
maelstrom of tears wept by 25 years of matinee crowds—a monsoon undiminished by the fact that, for decades, South Park has been roasting this thing as if it were a luau pig. Yet critics go on tiptoe, worried about being punched out by theater fans, as if those idlers had any iron in their bones. Say it proud: Les Misérables is bad. It can’t contain the discursive beauty of the book. It zips around making characters turn up aged with white hair for yet another coincidental path-crossing, requiring them to describe their feelings in “what is this I’m feeling right now?” lyrics. The politics have a musty centrism that only looks like even-handedness; this is the least-rousing call to the
barricades imaginable. Plus, you could mash the revolutionary anthem “One Day More” with “Tomorrow” in Annie and scarcely miss a beat. Is there any original music in this behemoth? The cross-purpose duets and trios (which have the effect of people singing over each other’s solos) only emphasize the flatness of the tunes. Any hope of popular, artless simplicity is betrayed by a rigid, rhyming-scheme verse by Herbert Kretzmer. A group on a bare stage can make Les Misérables weepworthy live, maybe, but the pitiless camera exposes the conceit, the coincidence, the motivelessness—even suggesting (unforgivably) that it is Victor Hugo who creaks. Tom Hooper’s film version seeks streetiness with hand-held cameras and an emphasis on blood and realistically filthy sewers. Amid this squalor, Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean) and Russell Crowe (Javert) bellow at each other at close range. This sunless movie seeks to re-
create the surly clouds and gloom of the illustrator Doré (whose engravings were plundered for all those Les Mis sweatshirts and shopping bags). But Hooper is also trying to emulate Tim Burton’s last great movie, Sweeney Todd, in the soot and satin costume design, and the gore and the whores. Here are two of Sweeney’s cast members, Helena Bonham Carter and Sasha Baron Cohen, as the two thieving proprietors of a brothel/inn. This Rooster and Lily bit resembles a commedia del arte approach too gauche even for a children’s show, let alone for Annie. Hooper tries to zest these scenes up with cleavage. The best chest in the movie, belonging to the sloe-eyed Amanda Seyfried, is veiled. Seyfried gets the role of the uninteresting good girl Cosette. The good-bad Éponine is played by the not-bad Samantha Barks, a stage actress who has the advantage of a voice that can make the songs sound like they’ve got some dynamism. As the more-sinned-against-thansinning Fantine, Anne Hathaway sin gives something like 10,000 percent. giv Fantine falls into unemployment, Fa shearing, mutilation, prostitution and sh consumption in the time it takes to nuke co some popcorn, but there’s no time to som feel anything for her. She sings her swan fee song straight to the camera, big, brown son hollow eyes pleading for a Golden ho Globe. There’s a bit of retching in her singing: a cry from a broken stomach. This film is a job for FEMA. Hooper’s hand in the street-fighting scenes is as shaky as in the love scenes or the weird Alfonse/Gastonery of the Javert/Valjean antagonism. Ultimately, what dooms this mammoth mistake can be blamed on the verses and the insistence on the close-up for every incidental line. The cast has to give operatic emphasis to rhymes like “won” and “Don Juan”—or seek the colloquial (“Hey there, monsieur, what’s new with you?/ Are you planning to overthrow the state?”) The Warner Bros. cartoon vibe suggested itself when Valjean himself offered himself up this request: “Shoot me now/Or shoot me later.” It’s the uncredited writing of Daffy Duck.

Revivals BACK TO THE FUTURE The Retro Dome’s lease is ending in late January, so this might be the perfect moment to spend some quality time with the old girl. This weekend: Robert Zemeckis’ delightful trilogy of chrononaut action. Michael J. Fox is the brave yet clumsy Marty McFly, whose temporal and Oedipal adventures span a glorified 1950s (a tribute to Reagan, some thought) and a dangerous 2015—finally with a sidetrack to Marin County in the cowboy days. Enjoy it in the futuristic movie format of yesterday: the amazing dome theater. (Plays Dec 28-30 at the Retro Dome in San Jose.)
BECAUSE OF HIM/I’LL BE YOURS (1946/1947) Deanna Durbin plays a star-struck performer dazzled by a noted actor (Charles Laughton). She sings the Rogers/Hart “Lover” and “Danny Boy.” BILLED WITH I’ll Be Yours. Durbin stars as “Louise Ginglebusher”—and if that name sounds like something out of Preston Sturges, you’re right—the film is a musical remake of The Good Fairy, with Durbin in the Margaret Sullavan part as the fixer who helps connect a poor lawyer (Tom Drake) with a tycoon (Adolphe Menjou.) CAN’T HELP SINGING/LADY ON A TRAIN (1944/1945) Deanna Durbin goes West in Technicolor. She plays a senator’s daughter who slips the leash and heads to Gold Country searching for the Army lieutenant she loves. Akim Tamiroff lurks about (as “Prince Gregory Stroganovsky”), and the songs (none of them famous) are by Yip Harburg and Jerome Kern. BILLED WITH Lady on a Train. Durbin asks the musical question, “Give Me a Little Kiss, Will Ya, Huh?” She thinks she saw a murder, and the stymied NYPD bring in a detective-fiction writer to debrief her. Dan Duryea meets Edward Everett Horton, which sums up the mood of this comedy thriller nicely. Plus Durbin sings “Night and Day.” (Plays Dec 26-28 in Palo Alto at the Stanford Theatre.) (RvB)

Reviews ARGO (R; 120 min.) Ben Affleck’s film is a comedy about the nadir of the American ’70s, the Iranian hostage crisis and the apparent impotence of our nation. Derived from a true-life story of rescue, the film’s heroics should prove particularly appealing. Yet while Affleck goes full ’70s, his nerve failed somewhere. He decided to pump up the tale. Affleck plays Tony Mendez, a CIA officer of tensed nerves and troubled stability. Mendez will organize the scouting of locations for a fake science-fiction movie. Six Americans who escaped the revolutionary roundup are currently hiding in the Canadian embassy in Tehran. They will be removed, disguised as crew members and writers. The film sees the famous “Canadian Caper” as comedy. While some documentarylike scenes of an embassy in flight ground the movie, it’s a fantasy about how a magic charm
of lies is able to brave the walls of the worst reign of terror situations. Who was the Scarlet Pimpernel, if not a showman? (RvB)

DEADFALL (R; 95 min.) Disappointing film noir with some advantages, one of them being the fact that there aren’t any other elf-free 90-minute movies this time of year. A plus: Olivia Wilde (of House M.D.) as one half of a pair of too-close Southern siblings on the lam in the snows of Michigan; Wilde has the too-vivid beauty Joan Bennett displayed in her Fritz Lang film noirs. Stefan Ruzowitsky made the dreadful
All the Queen’s Men and the flawed but interesting The Counterfeiters. He leads this one out of the gate with punch: a severe car accident leaves Liza (Wilde) suspended upside down inside the car from the safety belt. Her brother, Addison (Eric Bana, suitably tough), is forced to use his gun within the first five minutes, asking for forgiveness when he pulls the trigger. What seems like a sidebar about a crooked, shamed Detroit boxer (Charlie Hunnam of Sons of Anarchy) turns out to be the start of parallel plot lines converging at a Thanksgiving table, where Kris Kristofferson and Sissy Spacek are the hosts. The last half-hour falls apart. Addison’s God-haunted desperation and conflicted feelings turn into typical one-dimensional villaining, and the ordinarily deft Spacek and Kristofferson play it like a TV Thanksgiving special in
which there’s a sudden home invasion. (RvB)
DJANGO UNCHAINED (R; 165 min.) Django, an escaped slave (Jamie Foxx, emulating the stolid heroes of yesterday’s blacksploitation films) joins up with a benign German (Christopher Waltz, practically a one-man Goethe Society). Their mission is to free Django’s wife (Kerry Washington) from a vicious Southern planter. Talky and sprawling, the film rests solidly in Quentin Tarantino’s comfort zone, with alternating bands of speechifying and big payback. The fun parts are undimmed by the Connecticut tragedy. When you see blood spatter all over white flowering cotton, it’s a perfect illustration of Godard’s comment, “That’s not blood;

Horndog-in-Chief WATCHING Bill Murray play Franklin Delano Roosevelt, one wonders why they didn’t just hire Kevin Kline. Kline’s easy, shallow Manhattanite manner could have done justice to the conception of FDR in Hyde Park on Hudson. The film gives us a vision of a colorlessly suave man shadowed by a ruthless personal life—he juggled mistresses—and tells us that he was surrounded by forceful, domineering women. Elizabeth Wilson plays FDR’s mother, a teetotaler terror, always on alert for the rattle of a cocktail shaker. The story involves a visit from the king and queen of England in summer 1939. Samuel West plays the stuttering George VI (who was the subject of The King’s Speech); he and Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) have come for an uncomfortable stay at a Dutchess County house not suited for royals. The uncertain king gets a boost from FDR’s world-famous ability to inspire confidence: the warmest scene is a late-night meeting of the two men. As an actor, Murray can’t do what he does best—exude the air of falseness and dubiousness. Instead, he gives a warts-and-all performance—literally, considering the distracting raisin-sized mole Murray wears on his brow. This very odd film tries to drain away
some of the myth of FDR. Hyde Park on Hudson is essentially the story of a photo opportunity and uses the least-interesting person in the room as the entry point: FDR’s cousin Daisy (Laura Linney), whom he seduces with banal authority. First Roosevelt shows her his stamp collection; Hyde Park then he takes her for on Hudson a country ride, parks, clasps her hand and puts R; 94 min. it in his lap. FDR may Plays valleywide not be a demigod, but this cutting-down to size (especially given Linney’s meek, slightly bewildered performance) isn’t edifying or informative. She narrates, so we hear all the details of her heartbreak when she realizes she’s been fed a well-used line by a powerful older man. This grubby, privacy-invading movie doesn’t make its point about how the lack of privacy keeps us from having the leaders we might have had. Hyde Park on Hudson is not as open as it seems, anyway. It says FDR spurned Eleanor (nicely played by Olivia Williams), but considering Eleanor’s lack of enthusiasm for sex, we might have seen his side of it. And the way the poster sells this story as a naughty comedy is the last straw. Richard von Busack

The film credits the power of H the bond between the Hitchcocks in a th time of crisis over Psycho, which studio ti heads he and censors alike are claiming can’t ca be made. Except for Cate Blanchett, ki sauntering in satin as Galadriel, sa the Lady of Lorien, The Hobbit: An th Unexpected Journey is a female-free U zone. zo Instead of romance, we get creatures: leprous orcs, gross, ravenous cr trolls tr and stone giants. It’s a wellstocked menagerie, but is it anything st more? The creatures are either bad m villains or good heroes here, and the vi most m serious personal conflict is confi co ned to one mere character: the oily, oi murderous Gollum (voiced by Andy Sirkis, returning), the films’ highlight Si for fo the 20 minutes that he gets to be onscreen. JACK REACHER (PG-13; 130 min.) There’s a school of thought that you don’t write about a film unless you see all of it. A fire alarm interrupted the screening of this Tom Cruise film by Christopher McQuarrie, but by an hour and a quarter I got the drift. Don’t consider this a review, just an account of what I did see. An ex-military sniper, comatose after a beating in police custody, seems the only suspect for a five-person massacre just outside of PNC park in Pittsburgh. Into the case comes man of mystery Jack Reacher (Cruise), a former Army MP investigator, described as a kind of superman. He teams with bosomy lawyer Rosamund Pike to find out who the real culprit is. A mad Russian lurks in the shadows, played with delicious nervelessness by Werner Herzog, with a fake cataract, yet. Considering villain, B-movie coincidences and brisk fight scenes, it might have worked—except for the actor who shaped it for his talents. Clad in a vintage, distressed-leather jacket with occasional chest-baring scenes and flaunting obviously dyed hair (maybe it’s time to go gray?), Cruise is in a stretch that’s far exceeds his reach(er). SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (R; 123 min.) The bipolar Pat (an ultimately monotonous Bradley Cooper) returns home to the Philly suburbs after an eight-month sentence to the mental hospital for threatening his wife. He’s lured back to coping with the help of his pal’s widowed sisterin-law, Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), who’s just as full of meds and emotional troubles as he is. Director David O. Russell veers all over the map charting these two troubled love birds, considering them as everything from quirky truth tellers to screaming troublemakers. (RvB)
THIS IS 40 (R; 134 min.) It sure is—40 minutes too long. Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) endure the week before her 40th birthday, which she is cravenly describing as her 38th. Their marriage is under pressure because of child rearing, lack of sex and debt. The attempt to peel back the comedy seems to reveal all the more sitcom undercurrent, all the more vertigoinspiring navel (and other orifices) gaze. Albert Brooks, Charlyne Yi and Melissa McCarthy give this film’s everstalling comedic flywheel a spin or two. Judd Apatow’s film is a refinement of the frat-pack comedy as much as a tombstone for a subgenre. (RvB)

:l[[c\]\jk )'() THERE HAVE BEEN upward of 20 “Cuddleâ€? shows in and around San Jose since 2004, according to organizers, and yet the concert series remains mostly unknown to Silicon Valley music fans. The upcoming Cuddlefest 2012 at Dana Street Roasting Company on New Year’s Eve holds true to a key element from the past editions: packing as many bands on the bill as possible. This year’s show includes Shinobu, Pteradon, Leer, Slime Girls, Colossal Rex, the High Sea, Kill the Bats, Yulia, Buttery Thursdays, San Francesca, Hard Girls and DJ Coco. Initially, the Cuddle shows were loosely stitched together parties that bands Shinobu and Pteradon threw in the tiny practice space that they shared. “We settled on the name because the members of Shinobu and Pteradon at one point had no inhibitions about shamelessly cuddling and loving one another, and all we’re invited to join in the cuddle Dana Street action,â€? says Bob Vielma from Shinobu. Roasting Company By just rounding up all their friends, they’d cram enough Monday, Dec. 31; people into the practice space that any notions of personal 5pm; $5; all ages space were obliterated, making the show’s name that much more ďŹ tting. Quickly, they started asking their friends in bands to play the shows, and they would come up with increasingly more ridiculous names, such as Cuddlestock, Cuddlechella and Cuddle Lilith Fair. The more bands that Shinobu and Pteradon friended, the more eclectic the shows became. Some past participants include Phoenix folk-punker Andrew Jackson Jihad (who now draws several hundred people to his shows), Japan’s Ging Nang Boys (who at the time drew 3,000 people in Japan), DJ Altair Nouveau (who was at one point signed to DFA) and rapper J-Tripz (a junior member of Tha Dogg Pound). “When J-Tripz played, he rolled up in an SUV with his album cover emblazoned on the side of the vehicle,â€? Vielma recalls. These days, Cuddle shows are more sporadic and no longer take place in the old practice space. Cuddlefest 2010, for instance, happened at Nickel City—and was packed. People that were part of the Cuddle scene back in the mid-2000s still remember the early years. The show the Ging Nang Boys played, in particular, stands out with everyone who was there. Local DJ Chris Rios, a.k.a. Demichild, recalls that show: “There were more than 50 people crammed into one room. Performers were in their underwear, drenched in greasy dressings of salty sweat, and foaming amounts of spit seeping out of every singer’s mouth. In that room, we were all brothers and sisters who became one screaming, sweaty mess.â€?—Aaron Carnes

It makes it too easy to drag a duffel bag of cash to the obvious places: the jewelry store, the cashmere store, the handbags that cost more than some compact cars store. These items aren’t exactly horrible gifts, but a better choice is “the gift that keeps on giving,” which, I know, sounds like something you get from drinking the water in Mexico. It actually describes a feeling you give another person—the feeling that she’s loved—through showing her that it means a lot to you to make her happy, and not just on Christmas, Valentine’s Day and days you’re trying to say you’re sorry for doing something you shouldn’t have.
By truly listening when a woman talks and then using the intel you get to make her life happier, easier and more fun, you tell her a very loving thing: “I’m paying attention to who you are.” You can say this by going out of your way to pick her up a latte or her favorite snack; by making a $50 book with your photos and captions about all the things you love about her (Shutterfly.com, Apple. com); by sending sweet, funny, 30-second videos you shoot of yourself on your phone; and by fixing things she didn’t realize were unwieldy, uncomfortable or broken until you made them better. I’m assuming it’s based on her memory of being in church or Catholic school when she was a teenager. You probably have an analogous rule lodged somewhere in the depths of your unconscious mind— an outmoded prohibition or taboo that may still be subtly corroding your life energy. The coming year will be an excellent time to banish that ancient nonsense for good. If you were Deborah Sullivan, I’d advise you to ďŹ ll a whole notebook page with the corrected assertion: “It’s OK to look a boys during prayer.â€? LEO (July 23–Aug. 22): For years, the gravestone of Irish dramatist Oscar Wilde was covered with kissshaped lipstick marks that were left by his admirers. Unfortunately, Wilde’s descendants decided to scour away all those blessings and erect a glass wall around the tomb to prevent further displays of affection. In my astrological opinion, Leo, you should favor the former style of behavior over the latter in 2013. In other words, don’t focus on keeping things neat and clean and well-ordered. SCORPIO (Oct. 23–Nov. 21): In 2013, I will try to help
you retool, reinvent, and reinvigorate yourself in every way that’s important to you. I will encourage you to reawaken one of your sleeping aptitudes, recapture a lost treasure, and reanimate a dream you’ve neglected. If you’re smart, Scorpio, you will reallocate resources that got misdirected or wasted. And I hope you will reapply for a privilege or position you were previously denied, because I bet you’ll win it this time around. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22–Dec. 21): Based on experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, a team of physicists in France and Switzerland announced last July that they had tentatively discovered the Higgs Boson, which is colloquially known as the “God particle.â€? What’s all the fuss? In her San Francisco Chronicle column, Leah Garchik quoted an expert who sought to explain: “The Higgs boson is the WD40 and duct tape of the universe, all rolled into one.â€? Is there a metaphorical equivalent of such a glorious and fundamental thing in your life, Sagittarius? If not, I predict you will ďŹ nd it in 2013. If there already is, I expect you will locate and start using its 2.0 version. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22–Jan. 19): In 2013, I pledge
to help you bring only the highest-quality inuences and self-responsible people into your life. Together we will work to dispel any unconscious attraction you might have to demoralizing chaos or pathological melodrama. We will furthermore strive to ensure that as you deepen and ďŹ ne-tune your self-discipline, it will not be motivated by self-denial or obsessive controlfreak tendencies. Rather, it will be an act of love that you engage in so as to intensify your ability to express yourself freely and beautifully.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20–Feb. 18): “Genius is the ability to renew one’s emotions in daily experience,â€? said French painter Paul Cezanne. What do you think he meant by that? Here’s one interpretation: Many of us replay the same old emotions over and over again—even in response to experiences that are nothing like the past events when we felt those exact feelings. So a genius might be someone who generates a fresh emotion for each new adventure. Here’s another possible interpretation of Cezanne’s remark: It can be hard to get excited about continually repeating the basic tasks of our regular routines day after day. But a genius might be someone who is good at doing just that. I think that by both of these deďŹ nitions, 2013 could be a genius year for you Aquarians. PISCES (Feb. 19–March 20): Home is not just the building where you live. It’s more than the community that gives you support and the patch of earth that comforts you with its familiarity. Home is any place where you’re free to be your authentic self; it’s any power spot where you can think your own thoughts and see with your own eyes.
