I wanted to say that I found this week’s cartoon of This Modern World to be both a racist and sexist stereotype of white males (Nov. 28). Not all white males are racist, sexist or conservative. That is politically

correct BS propaganda. Is Joe Biden racist, sexist or conservative? What about Jerry Brown? Accusing any other ethnicity of racism or sexism appears to be a serious faux pas even if it’s true. McAfee Can’t Shut Up Police in Belize are dismissing reports of the capture of John McAfee, the founder and former CEO of the Silicon Valley anti-virus company that still bears his name, and the prime suspect in the murder of his island neighbor. McAfee himself conﬁrmed that he is still on the lam in a midnight post to his blog, whoismcafee.com, titled, “I Am Safe,” claiming that he used an earlier blog post and a double to dupe the media and Mexican authorities into turning their attention to a suspect caught at the Belize-Mexico border with a North Korean passport. “I apologize for the silence and misdirection,” said McAfee in his blog post. “I am currently safe and in the company of two intrepid journalists from Vice magazine, and, of course, Sam. We are not in Belize, but not quite out of the woods yet. I will do a more detailed posting later today if all goes well. My ‘double,’ carrying a North Korean passport under my name, was in fact detained in Mexico for pre-planned misbehavior, but due to indifference on the part of authorities was evicted from the jail and was unable to serve his intended purpose in our exit plan. He is now safely out of Mexico.” McAfee goes on to say that he left Belize to shelter girlfriend Sam, who

has “been my go-between and my eyes and ears in the outside world,” and whose safety he believes to be in jeopardy. He said he will return to Belize once he feels Sam is safe. “My ﬁght is in Belize, and I can do little in exile,” he said. “My lifeline of information pertaining to the inner workings of the government depends on my physical presence.” Ofﬁcials say the 67-year-old McAfee is using his blog to build an international base of public support following the Nov. 11 shooting death of neighbor and fellow American businessman Gregory Viant Faull. McAfee had reportedly been seen quarrelling with Faull in previous weeks but maintains that he is

building, 157 W. El Camino Real, which was then Andy Capp’s Tavern. With its initial success, Pong essentially launched what we now know as the video game industry. Pong was Atari’s ﬁrst commercial experiment and just about everyone who’s ever played a video or computer game knows it. The history endures, especially if you grew up in Silicon Valley, as there were some brief moments when Atari ruled the universe. As the story goes, Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney were Atari employees one and two, respectively. Alcorn was number three. Bushnell assigned Alcorn to create a video game based on table tennis, and Pong was the result. To test-market the idea, they installed a makeshift version in Andy Capp’s

Tavern in September of 1972. Right there on a borderline-rural stretch of El Camino Real, the first consumers put the first quarters into that first Pong machine. The rest is history, and the original box now sits in the Computer History Museum. Just imagine how different the last 40 years of video games would have been if Pong had never happened. The façade of Rooster T. Feathers is virtually unchanged since the Andy Capp’s days, save for a few paint jobs and a more recent sign. It remains an integral component of Silicon Valley history as well as a groovy independent business right at an intersection where a smattering of such establishments exists. That said, the physical scenery deserves mention here as well. Most of the Sunnyvale landscape is utterly forgettable, but the complex original bouillabaisse of independent businesses right along Murphy Avenue, as one careens away from El Camino, is a retro-exotic oasis amid the more homogeneous modern strip-malls

dominating the other side of El Camino. The intersection forms a suburban, old-vs.-new polarity that cannot go unmentioned. All along that stretch of El Camino, one ﬁnds a bland, tasteless broth of faux-granite exteriors, bread-themed mall restaurants, bad stucco, ugly boxretail outlets, canned dinner-jazz fusion emanating from every external speaker and countless vitamin shops and cellphone stores. As always, the planners at each of the malls implemented every possible technique to discourage any possible pedestrian from ever wanting to enjoy any of it. And as always, the malls are named after whatever they destroyed, like “Cherry Orchard.” This is precisely why the Allario Center on Murphy Avenue and its neighboring center are so uplifting and refreshing to the senses as one arrives there from the generic nightmare of El Camino. Just along that stretch of Murphy, one ﬁnds Coconut Hill Indian Groceries, a Thai Massage place, the Lace Museum, an acupuncture clinic, an Aikido studio, a decades-old locksmith shop, a yarn store, a sports-card collector and a wig shop. Yeah! It really looks like someone went out of his or her way to preserve some degree of interesting retail integrity amid the gargantuan swaths of monolithic ugliness on the main road. Just 200 feet off El Camino you feel like you’re in a different galaxy entirely. That stretch of Murphy seems off the beaten path but still native, somehow. Rooster T. Feathers, even though it’s on El Camino, functions as an anchor for the rest of the interesting shops and businesses that veer off along Murphy. At least that’s how I see it. Inside the comedy club, the party opened with Alcorn taking the stage to commemorate the history, claiming he never set out to start an industry—he just had a problem to solve on a $75 TV. “Thanks for all the quarters,” he quipped. “I appreciate it.” Host Erikka Innes of Sex With Nerds emceed the rest of the evening. “Without Pong,” she said, “no one would have invented beer pong, and my parents would not have hooked up and made me.”

The décor of this Japanese/Hong Kong cafe is simple, but the place bubbles with activity. Loud, energetic music plays on the speakers, and there is a rack of random magazines available for perusing, not to mention several board games. The walls are filled with drawings done on small sticky notes by customers. My favorite was of a sketch of a Pacman preparing to eat a ghost with a woman right below him about to consume some tea. NeiTea House’s desserts and teas are the biggest allure. The egg puff (or eggette) is a must-try item. It is a simple wafflelike pastry that’s popular in Hong Kong. NeiTea serves large sheets of egg puffs for $3.25 apiece. The “original” flavor is lightly sweet, and the puff is soft on the inside, crispy on the outside and made fresh with each order. The other main dessert item, crepes, is a strictly Japanese concoction. The crepes are thin, crispy, fresh and wrapped like a cone—indeed, much like a waffle cone, except that it can still unravel if set down on the table. The ice cream and toppings are served inside the crepe, along with a spoon. I had strawberry ice cream with blueberries, strawberries, chocolate syrup and whipped cream ($5.25). The bites of crepes, ice cream and toppings all together are the best. Who knew that ice cream and crepes were such a perfect fit? The milk tea and honey green tea ($2.25) are particularly delicious. The taste of honey in the green tea is so strong it nearly overrides any tea flavor. They are served either hot or cold. The popcorn chicken was basically fried chicken with salt, pepper, basil leaves and white mushrooms ($3.50). The takoyaki, fried octopus balls, were crispy on the outside, mushy on the inside and served with takoyaki sauce, which is similar to Worcestershire sauce ($3.25). The barbecue pork and corn ramen was filling and delicious, particularly the doughy noodles and long slices of pork. It also comes with chives, corn and fish cakes ($6.95). Lastly, the owner suggested I try a new item: an Asian fusion pizza made with bacon, chives, seaweed, cheese and kimchi ($6.75). The flavors, he said, are a mixed bag from all over Asia. KraftBrew event specialist Vanessa Reed confirms that South Bay beers will be available for tasting. Look for Hermitage Maltopia and Ale of the 2 Tun Imperial Stout, Strike Imperial Red and Faultine Winter Strong Ale and Dunkel Weisse. She adds, “The WinterBall is a tasting event; unlike past KraftBrews, where people could choose to buy tastes or full glasses, for this event we will only pour 4-ounce tastes of the beers.” The “tasting event” mentality is a good one as winter beers typically have higher alcohol levels than their season counterparts. Although he has had some brushes with mainstream popularity, they’ve been scattered and brief. He was ﬁrst recognized as the innovative young guitarist for the late-’60s folk-rock band Fairport Convention. After spending the ’70s making introspective rock albums with his wife, Linda, their last album

together, Shoot the Lights from 1982, ﬁnally roused the albumbuying public. In 1991, his solo album Rumor and Sigh, which has an almost New Wave sound, became a surprising hit. Overall, Thompson’s music has maintained a certain dark despairing tone, with intelligent lyrics and no-frills production, which may explain why he has eluded the mainstream most of his career. (AC)

sometimes young bands forget that, at its core, that core the genre is supposed to be ﬁlled with angst and give voice to the alienated. The Antioxidants rely on music as their sole means of communicating with the outside world. It’s angry stuff, but not in a violent way—more in the nervous-outcast-trying-tobe-heard kind of way. They play pop-punk in the vein of Blink 182 and My Chemical Romance with occasional ska riffs. They’ll be giving away free download codes for their new album to everyone who attends the show. (AC)

What makes battle rap so fascinating is that instead of being a freestyle competition, rappers get to know who their opponents are in advance and can then spend days carefully crafting their insults. That allows them to think up very speciﬁc, very personal insults about their opposite numbers. This is the ﬁrst in what will, with luck, be a regular tournament in San Jose. “Fillmoe” rapper Andre Nickatina’s music video “Jelly” is a step away from being softcore porn. Nickatina, a.k.a. Dre Dog, has made a career out of no-holds-barred imagery, while maintaining an air of intrigue. Having lived through and transcended the “golden era” of Bay Area hip-hop in the early ’90s, the rapper has 18 albums in his catalog, including the Cocaine Raps series and his collaboration with Mac Dre, A Tale of Two Andres. In the last few years, he’s enjoyed a resurgence with constant touring, a new mixtape with his latest single, “Call the Dealer,” and a feature on local radio hit “Glamorous Lifestyle” with the Jacka. Although, years later in an oral history, she remembers San Jose as an “cultural desert,” the girl learns a great deal about art from a neighbor who is a commercial artist and from one of her teachers at San Jose High, who “was an absolute inspiration to me.” After a few art classes at San Jose State, she enrolls at UC-Berkeley. That’s not much time—maybe six or seven years—across a lifetime, but they were formative years for Jay DeFeo, easily the most famous visual artist the city has fostered. Her biography has taken on a life of its own, sometimes bolstering, other times hampering, critical appraisal

of her achievements. A ne new i at SF O A brings retrospective SFMOMA together for the first time significant examples of her work and makes a powerful case for elevating her to the top ranks of post–World War II American artists. Starting in the late 1940s, DeFeo established herself as part of the Bay Area abstract expressionism movement. Early pieces, like Untitled (Florence), 1952, feature dynamic passages of bold colors anchored by simple geometric gestures. Later, she shifted to a monochromatic palette. The large canvas Untitled (Everest), 1955, builds from a smooth gray bottom section into a flurry of blacks and whites applied vigorously in overlapping waves like roiling clouds announcing a storm. More controlled but just as action-filled is Origin, 1956, a tightly bunched series of narrow vertical strokes of black and gray—the

painting is poised between a upward thrusts, like jets in a fountain, and a downward crashing, like a great falls pouring over a rock rim. Her work echoes and equals that of several major figures from the period: early Diebenkorn, Hassel Smith, Clyfford Still and Frank Lobdell. The exhibit also shows DeFeo’s forays into other media. She fashioned oddly crude wood and plaster sculptures of crosses and primitive totemic creatures (which influenced Manuel Neri). She made meticulous charcoal drawings in which fine waving and spiraling lines course through blank space. She experimented with collages of found images in the manner of fellow San Franciscan Jess. In the late ’50s, DeFeo embarked on a series of large paintings distinguished by the dense application, with a palette knife, of oil paints. These works take on a 3-D aspect, as much sculpture as painting. In The Jewel, 1952, a vertical starburst pattern of heavily caked paint converges across a spectrum of dark reds to a dazzling white center. Along the vertical axis, the paint has been cracked open to reveal deep fissures, as if bones has been pulverized to get at the marrow. These major works are mere preludes, however, to the piece that came to dominate DeFeo’s life: The Rose. Beginning in 1958, DeFeo devoted herself almost exclusively to the creation of this immense painting. It took over her apartment on Fillmore Street that she shared with her artist husband, Wally Hedrick. Taking up again the starburst pattern of The Jewel, she made it rounder. From a concave center point (located at just about eye level), the incised rays jet outward, growing thicker and more clotted until they disintegrate into blobs of gray and black. Carefully positioned in a special alcove at the museum, The Rose is a riveting, transcendent work—a grand vision of creation or universal flux. Photographs don’t do it justice; the scale and physicality have to be seen in person. The arduous process of creating The Rose became the stuff of legend. DeFeo built up and tore down the work over and over again. She

DeFeo, who had an instinct for selfmythologizing, posed half-nude for photographs in front the painting, as if she were a priestess instead of just a painter. The years of labor hindered her career; instead of following up on her first show in New York, she retreated to work on it. After The Rose was completed, her marriage ended, and she suffered from terrible gum problems, which she attributed to years working with toxic paints. Finally, The Rose had a showing in Pasadena, and then no one knew what to do with it. The Rose ended up at the San Francisco Art Institute, only to be covered by a wall of plaster. It was unseen for two decades until finally rescued and moved to the Whitney in New York. DeFeo did not paint again for several years, retreating to a rural farmhouse in Larkspur.

For many art historians, The Rose is a splendid climax with no second act. But the exhibit documents DeFeo’s return to signiﬁcant artmaking in a variety of styles and techniques. After Image (1970) is a splendid graphite and gouache drawing of a strange shell form with spiral ridges. DeFeo mounted it with a piece of torn paper on top as if the shell had been hidden for many years and only recently exposed to view—surely a comment on her own resurgence. DeFeo began using acrylics and synthetic paints, believing them to be safer for her health. The best of her works from the mid-’70s, Cabbage Rose, looks deep into the heart of some sooty-white and deep gray leaf forms to a center passage of pure black, so dark, so shiny that it acts as a mirror reﬂecting the shadows of viewers. She took up photography, proving to be extremely adept at both traditional gelatin silver printing and in the use of alternative, cameraless techniques like photograms. She worked, somewhat obsessively, on large pencil drawings of mechanical objects (most frequently, a camera tripod and a pair of diving goggles), rendering them at large scale, but rarely as complete things; instead, the lines often fade off into emptiness. Near the end of her life (she died of cancer in 1989), DeFeo produced several small abstract paintings that are a revelation. Using linen with very thick stretchers, DeFeo painted both the surface and the edges— again, in a subtle way, combining painting with sculpture. The color scheme is lighter, the brushstrokes assured but not tempestuous. In Blue One (1989), a smooth pastel blue meets a swath of swirling white and a rectangle of light gray. The simplicity is breathtaking. (The show is accompanied by a compendious catalog by Dana Miller, from Yale University Press, which comprises everything in the show and some intriguing pieces not on display.)

N<8M@E> N8PJ Sid Enck incorporates a wealth of materials in his art pieces.

Gathering Art “MY FRIEND used to call me Little Lost Indian, and I just went with it,” says Sid Enck. Choctaw by blood, but artistically driven by Hopi and Apache traditions, Sid will be showing his work in the Metro gallery beginning on South First Friday. Sid Enck Jr., or Sidenck, works in a small, utilitarian space. In a tiny garage off of 15th Street, Sid sits at a Singer sewing machine. Today, he is busy making various quilts. They are not traditional. He has picked up material along the way, throughout the years, and now it will become a visual history of some of his Sid Enck shows travels. “These bones I’ve sewn in there”—he points for South First to one of the quilts, which will be on display—“are Fridays from a raccoon I found dead, on a bike trip in Santa Cruz.” Metro Lobby Raccoon bones, rattlesnake skin and grip tape are just San Jose some of the things Sid weaves into his work. “I like to gather and recycle,” Sid says, while thumbing through various scraps of media, including a Redman tobacco pouch, which he includes in one of his quilts. Sid’s not afraid to take native imagery back from marketing material and showcase it in a place of artistic reflection. His style echoes time spent traveling through the Southwest. His influence wasn’t garnered in a classroom, or through book studies. Instead, Sid learned on the streets, from native artists, most of them Apache, and many without permanent residence. His quilts reverberate with the motifs of Apache art, while his dolls are influenced by Hopi traditions. They are not re-creations though; they don’t strive to be historically authentic. Sid’s work is an evolutionary side-step to the art. Many contemporary designers incorporate the style and art of the First Nations into their forms. Sid, on the other hand, isn’t trying to repurpose traditional imagery. His work is new, original, and personal, with an obvious influence from, and respect for, the past.—Tomasz Mackowiak

8ck$OdXj IT MIGHT be a contrary way to celebrate Christmas, but this year’s holiday offering from San Jose Stage, Reckless, is a dark, lyrical comedy by Craig Lucas (Prelude to a Kiss, The Light in the Piazza). Frequently revised and revived since its original 1983 premiere, Reckless is a fairy tale for adults—a whimsical ride through self-realization, the random senselessness of life and some of the worst Christmas disasters imaginable. Halsey Varady plays the heroine, Rachel, a chipper suburban mom bubbling over with seasonal euphoria until her husband, Tom (Will Springhorn, Jr.), informs her that he has put a contract out on her. Fleeing the house in her pajamas and hitching a ride out of town with a stranger named Lloyd (Michael Navarra), Rachel says that she’s always wanted to do something reckless like this. It all seems like a dream, and who knows? Perhaps it is. Things only get weirder from there, as Rachel moves in with Lloyd and his deaf, paraplegic wife, Pooty (Katie O’Bryon). Still in her pajamas, Rachel takes a job at “Hands Across the Sea,” a nonproﬁt that helps disabled people. She also appears on a television game show, witnesses several murders and visits an array of ridiculous psychiatrists (all played amusingly by Dena Martinez). Critics have called this dreamlike adventure “picaresque,” and there is something to that: for all its strangeness, it has the unmistakable air of everyday life.

Reckless Runs through Dec. 16; $20–$24 The Stage

Varaday’s Rachel is childlike and naïve, a sort of Goldilocks or Red Riding Hood confronting the big bad world, sympathetic even when her flightiness verges on irritating. With Navarra and O’Bryon as her adopted family, there is a splendid sense of mystery concealed beneath their aw-shucks Americanisms. Rounding out the cast are Judith Miller, who is almost animalistic as a surly bookkeeper at Hands Across the Sea, and Jay Steele, equally ringmasterlike playing Rachel’s boss at the nonprofit and a pair of television hosts. Furniture and other set pieces are whisked on and offstage, often with actors still clinging to them, illustrating the characters’ lack of control over their lives. In Reckless, life is a perpetual nightmare that you can’t wake up from. The play’s grotesque humor isn’t for everyone (a few of the funniest lines seemed to be lost on the opening-night audience), but it satisfies the urge for something edgy during the season of supposed good will.—Sean Conwell

Director Patrick Wang got into ﬁlm as a second career and has been

an actor on the indie-ﬁlm circuit. He has the lead role and demonstrates his serious talent as an underplayer and a reactor. In the Family takes a serene, low-key approach to what might have been deadly Issue of the Week material. Wang’s immaculate compositions match aesthetic choices that double as thrifty decisions. Example: During a police visit because of a domestic dispute, we witness the cops’ arrival through the beveled-glass panels surrounding a front door. We see the glow of blue and red lights and hear the chatter of a walkie-talkie. The light silhouettes the woman inside the house who has called the police. She has her back turned to us. There’s mystery here. And while it’s

matter, there was certainly less a lesser matter expense in doing it this way than in renting a cop car and a uniformed actor. The film begins disarmingly with a child puttering into an adult’s bedroom to wake up his parents. Here’s the film’s first surprise: the boy is white, and an Asian man’s sleepy head pokes out of the covers; he’s Joey Williams (Wang). Then the boy’s biological father, Cody (Trevor St. John), leans into the frame from his half of the bed. The singularities mount. The couple isn’t just mixed-race and gay but also quite Southern. Joey speaks with a molassesy drawl and the imperturbable pleasantness of a small-townsman. The story unfolds in Martin, Tenn., a college town 120 miles from Memphis. Joey’s job is restoring old buildings and doing a little antique bookbinding on the side. Cody teaches math at the local elementary school. Wang withholds the back story of how these two met until we’ve gotten to know them. Instead, the director builds the details of the life they share, especially

their interactions with their son. The boy is played by the irrepressible but well-directed Sebastian Banes. He is pleasingly boisterous but not a gratuitous scene-stealer. They call him Chip—nicknamed “Chipmunk,” much to his disdain. Too soon, Joey and Chip are left alone, a progression told through surroundings first and dialogue second. First, a close-up of the chair-legs on the too-shiny linoleum on a hospital floor, then a blackout with a cappella keening on the soundtrack. At last, Chip and Joey arrive home, both dressed in identical black suits. Earlier, we’ve discerned a slight nip of frost between Joey and Cody’s relatives: the tall, slightly uncomfortable Dave (Peter Hermann) and Eileen (Kelly McAndrew), Cody’s sister. Cody seemingly died intestate, but then Joey learns that a few years before, he had left notes about what he wanted done in the case of his demise. This is the straight couples’ chance to press pres for custody of their nephew and to seize Cody’s house. In carrying what they consider the right thing out wh do not deliver any speeches to do, they t about the wrongness of lifestyle choices or the Focus on the Family blather expect villains to spout. one would wo Dave aand Eileen have their reasons and believe that they’re legally right. And anyway, in situations of prejudice, it’s anywa what’s said out loud that matters. rarely w The standoff becomes a legal matter, and Brian Murray steps in, playing Joey’s seemingly placid but obviously formidable lawyer in the custody case. During the deposition, we see what lies beneath Joey’s stillness and learn how much he’s lost in life. It’s the antithesis of soap opera or traditional gay-film-fest fodder. Certainly, the difficulties Wang had making his movie and placing it in festivals tells enough of how very different In the Family is. This is a humane, gentle film, but it’s got strength. It’s a model of low-budget, between-the-lines filmmaking, avoiding pedestrian conflict while staying compelling during its ambitiously long but never boring length.

Holiday Horrors ALAMEDA-BASED archivist/nostalgist/ bon vivant Johnny Legend flabbergasts with the two-part “Christmas in Acidland” program he is bringing to Camera 3 in San Jose on Dec. 12. Here are relics of what the season used to mean in the early days of television: skeevy puppets, inebriated midgets, false-bearded, cackling weirdos in cotton-trimmed suits and ventriloquist dummies on the moon. In this two-part potpourri, vintage mid–20th century performers such as Liberace, Paul Winchell, Jack Benny and Ricky Nelson show that they still repay the attention. The first half is a harvest of quaint old seasonal snippets. Ronald Reagan uses the “faith and brotherhood” of the season to shill for General Electric. Ernie Kovacs shows some sobriety in a season where “Everybody’s a little bagged” as he does an antiadvertisement for Dutch Masters cigars. Amid this array comes one of the most startling things Legend has ever disinterred. It’s untitled, but let’s provisionally call it “The Monkey’s Christmas,” a magenta-shifted torture session beginning with a home-invading Santa: “I want you to believe in me,” he threatens. To convince a pair of doubting children, St. Nick uses stock footage of swarming monkeys at some horrifying zoo fighting like gladiators over a single

pretzel, as well as tarted-up costumed chimps acting out an inexpensive Xmas pageant. But what, says a small voice, what of the children who still doubt Santa?: “They do not believe except they see; they think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible to their little Christmas in Acidland minds.” If this enormity is Wednesday, not actually the Dec. 12, 7:30pm work of Ed Wood, Camera 3, San Jose it’s so far down the idiosyncratic director’s alley that Wood could have had it towed for blocking his driveway. At 7:30pm, a Christmas noir cavalcade includes 1953’s “The Big Little Jesus,” a Dragnet episode directed by Jack Webb, in which Joe Friday and his partner hunt down the punk who ﬁlched a baby Jesus from a church’s manger. “Silent Panic” is like that Cornell Woolrich Christmas special you’ve been begging for, with Harpo Marx as the deaf-mute witness to a serious crime. Also: popular puppet Howdy Doody investigates the case of a kidnapped Santa, which turns out to be a typical goof by pro wrestler Ugly Sam (Dayton Allen, a ringer for De Niro in Cape Fear). Oh, come, let us abhor it.—Richard von Busack

(R; 97 min.) Cold as a mackerel but darkly funny; it brings back the leftwing political disappointment essential to film noir, usually booted out in neonoir. New Orleans during the election of 2008: a mucky Australian junkie (Ben Mendelsohn) and his buddy, a minor thug (Scoot McNairy), are recruited to rob a high-stakes card game. A Cheneyian lawyer played by Richard Jenkins calls on a fixer (Brad Pitt) to unearth and punish the robbers. Working from a ’70s-era novel by George Higgins (The Friends of Eddie Coyle), director Andrew Dominik manages a smooth blend of ’70s funk and digital estrangement. The film offers the idea of a life of crime being difficult in the easy parts and vice versa—with the real risk in unbearable pressure to snitch, with killings that end in tears, vomit and blood instead of the final graceful “Nothing in his life became him like the leaving it” gestures to which moviegoers are accustomed. Pitt is heavyweight, but it’s James Gandolfini, as a gone goose called “New York Mickey,” who really flabbergasts; here’s everything he gave us in The Sopranos, only more so. (Plays valleywide.) A ROYAL AFFAIR (R; 129 minutes) It’s not that the king’s insane, really—he just utters slimy snickers like Dan Duryea in a ﬁlm noir. Christian VII (Mikkel Folsgaard) quips, “I like to drink, I like hookers with big breasts and I like to ﬁght.”This fascinating take on the rottenness in Denmark during the mid-1700s makes it rival Farewell, My Queen as a topdrawer historical romance. We watch an enlightened doctor (played by Mads Mikkelsen) soothe the royal inbred’s temper, even as he gets to know the

unfortunate queen (Alicia Vikander) better than the court would like. Freshly presented in pastel colors, with lots of looseness, lambency and melancholy Danish gloaming. Mikkelsen is a phrenologist’s dream—there hasn’t been a skull that interesting since Jack Palance was alive. (Opens Dec 7 in Cupertino at the BlueLight Cinemas.) (RvB)

Deanna Durbin as an inmate at a Swiss boarding school whose tales of her long-lost father force her to find a stand-in (Herbert Marshall) for the man. Durbin sings “Ave Maria” with the Vienna Boy’s Choir. BILLED WITH That Certain Age. Deanna gets a crush on Melvyn Douglas. Dec 8-10: Three Smart Girls Grow Up/First Love (both 1939). Durbin’s sequel to her first hit, billed with the movie in which she got her first kiss (from Robert Stack). Dec 11-14: It’s a Date/Spring Parade (both 1940). Durbin faces rivalry in love and life with her mother (Kay Francis). Spring Parade is a slice of Franz-Josef-era Viennese sacher torte, in which Durbin warbles “When April Sings.” (Plays in Palo Alto at the Stanford Theatre.) (RvB)

Reviews ANNA KARENINA (R; 129 min.) Adapter Tom Stoppard does a superior job of whipping the story into just over two hours, keeping as many aphorisms as possible and not neglecting Tolstoy’s compassion for the minor characters. But director Joe Wright (Atonement) stages the tale of ruinous adultery as a postmodern entertainment. This Karenina is ultimately a case of a ﬁlm that thinks it’s a play. The anti-heroine, Anna, a Russian aristocrat destroyed by adultery, is played by Keira Knightley. Her glacial face—her skin is almost ceramic in its whiteness—is key to the same po-mo approach that stalls the audience identiﬁcation with her suffering. Knightley can’t break through the thickness of the frame. Jude Law makes a dutiful, sympathetic Karenin; he is a dull, understanding saint dressed in clerical robes like a priest. Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s vain Vronsky wears some gleaming uniforms but bears an unignorable resemblance to Gene Wilder. (RvB)

Increasingly Baptist, increasingly obvious, increasingly flattened by on-the-nose needle drops (“Sweet Jane” during a heroin OD), Flight is a drama/procedural of a drunken airline pilot’s redemption. Robert Zemeckis, returning to the real world after more than a decade of synthespian-wrangling, engineers a terrific air disaster in which the dashing “Whip” Whitaker (Denzel Washington) brings her in upside down. You pay your fare afterward: a long slow series of AA meetings, some 10-ton affirmations and some urgings to get clean from a recovered junkie (Kelly Reilly, sincere in the part). Chemical temptations are provided by the fleshy John Goodman. As a polydrug purveyor who has a beer-bottle opener mounted on the dashboard of his car, Goodman seems to wander in from another movie. At what point would the glowering Whitaker have had this yappy good ol’ boy as a party buddy? Washington’s moral authority may be unequaled by any other actor, unless the actor is Morgan Freeman. His deep-down integrity makes this particular battle with the bottle (and with dawning faith) about as interesting as it can get. Which is, ultimately, not that interesting. (RvB)

?@K:?:F:B (PG-13; 98 min.) Entertaining but mostly meretricious. The sinful old British uncle walks again. The ﬁlm’s main pleasure lies in watching Anthony Hopkins inhabit the famous silhouette as the Borodin theme plays. The actor is entombed in fat makeup, and only Hopkins’ eyes have much range; he must express stirring fear, vanity and jealousy inside the outward tranquility. He fears losing his wife, Alma (Helen Mirren), to a young upstart (Danny Huston). The ﬁlm credits the power of the bond between the Hitchcocks in a

time of crisis over Psycho, which studio heads and censors alike are claiming can’t be made. The closer Hitchcock sticks to the matter at hand, the better. There should have been more on composer Bernard Herrmann and less on the idea of Hitchcock boiling with jealous rage. (RvB)

C@=< F= G@ (PG; 127 min.) Pi (Irrfan Khan), a friendly professor in modern Montreal, is lunching with an avid American (Rafe Spall). Pi unfolds the tale of his singular voyage to the Newer World from his home in the French colony of Pondicherry—a Tintin-esque locale. The son of a man who believes only in logic, Pi becomes pious in all the religions, in passages that director Ang Lee envisions as a handsome pastiche of Satyajit Ray. Dad runs a zoo. When the money runs short, the family must sell the critters to overseas collectors. The animal freighter sinks, and young Pi (Suraj Sharma) is stranded in a lifeboat with a wounded zebra, an orangutan and a hyena. Then, out of the waves, comes the zoo’s tiger, Richard Parker. The tiger has never seen a Disney movie; he has a vicious temper and refuses to be gentled. Worn down by weeks of certain doom, Pi puts his trust in providence. Whatever Life of Pi is trying to say about the Hindu/ Buddhist Wheel of Suffering, it says much more interestingly than did Cloud Atlas. (Read a full-length review online at metroactive.com.) (RvB)

(PG; 97 min.) Jack Frost (voiced by Chris Pine) is recruited by the team of mythical heroes protecting the children of the world ever since the end of the Dark Ages: Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman and the stroppy Australian Easter Bunny (voiced by Hugh Jackman). Among a cast of superior voice actors, Jude Law seems light-loafered to play a prince of darkness named Pitch. But this 3-D-animated ﬁlm is often dashing. There’s a lot of pleasure in watching Alec Baldwin’s outrageously hearty Santa. He’s tattooed, Russian, formidable and bearish. He’s slightly scary, just as Santa was when one was a child, contemplating someone you’d better watch out for. There’s an element of Sendakian mystery and design in the mute gold-dusted imp who can put anyone to sleep with a handful of sand. Pleasing as it is, the ﬁlm contains an implicit guilt-whipping to parents: Neglect the holidays and you may destroy the world. (RvB)

(PG-13; 142 min.) 007 (Daniel Craig) recuperates from a rifle wound and follows a trail of clues leading to a dangerous hacker called Silva (Javier Bardem). Sam Mendes gives up more backstory than a lot of James Bond fans would want. In the interests of rebuilding the series, they’re drilling for bedrock even at risk of making Bond yet another little boy lost and in need of reparenting. The photography is a landmark for digital film; there are stunning sequences in Istanbul, a Chinese red-dyed Macao and Shanghai. And the virility of Daniel Craig reaches Clark Gable levels; it seems no one will ever look less ducky in a suit. Too bad the film is undervillained. (RvB)

(PG; 108 min.) The story walks a fine line between the cute and the uncanny. An apelike 8-bit video-game heavy has been demolishing the same apartment house for some 30 years. Shunned by the other characters in the Fix-It Felix Jr. video game, Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) sojourns into neighboring video games. Through mishap, Ralph is stranded in a sticky, fer-girls racetrack game called Sugar Rush. The metaphysics of how this arcade world works includes a transit system and homeless characters from out-of-order games and graffiti. Yet the movie isn’t crushed by its own concept or by injokes, and the central fable transcends good-vs.-evil storytelling. The film honors the balance between creation and destruction. (RvB)

C@E:FCE (PG-13; 120 min.) Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln is by far the most intelligent of the director/impresario’s history ﬁlms. He gives us the reliable pleasure of watching a charismatic, covert man who won’t tell us what is dearest to him. The movie portrays Lincoln as an outwardly serene manipulator. You can see the Bismarck in him behind the mask of the weary saint—herding lame-duck congressmen and using his agents to cajole, bribe and threaten. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Lincoln with sterling wit and nobility. Visible right from the beginning is not just an uncommon man but a very strange one—and certainly an unhappy one. (RvB)

(R; 120 min.) Ben Affleck’s film is a comedy about the nadir of the American ’70s, the Iranian hostage crisis and the apparent impotence of our nation. Derived from a true-life story of rescue, the film’s heroics should prove particularly appealing. Yet while Affleck goes full ’70s, his nerve failed somewhere. He decided to pump up the tale. Affleck plays Tony Mendez, a CIA officer of tensed nerves and troubled stability. Mendez will organize the scouting of locations for a fake science-fiction movie. Six Americans who escaped the revolutionary round-up are currently hiding in the Canadian embassy in Tehran. They will be removed, disguised as crew members and writers. While some documentarylike scenes of an embassy in flight ground the movie, it’s a fantasy about how a magic charm of lies is able to brave the walls of the worst reign of terror situations. (RvB)

Emotional Delight I LOVE how theatrical a lot of the indie-folk bands are. San Francisco’s Fox & Woman is no exception. They don’t have lavish costumes or props, but they bring an air of drama to their live shows that is stageworthy. Their gig in San Jose this Saturday takes place at Anno Domini as part of the Uncanny Valley of the Heart’s Delight series, which Corpus Callosum hosts as a sort of marriage of live music, performance art and theater. Fox & Woman Fox & Woman will be right at home. They are solid acoustic players who combine guitars, violins, banjos, ukuleles and percussion into what would seem like, on the surface, great campﬁre tunes. Jess Silva and Emily Haltom bring a near-constant wall of vocal harmonies to the music that is spot-on and ﬁerce. They also deliver a lot of soul, a little bit of twang and enough passion to shake the soul.

The opening track, “Break Into My Heart,” from their self-titled debut EP, exempliﬁes their musical strategy. The song consists mostly of just vocals and hand claps, but it has intense power and drive. Yet what makes it so remarkable is how well-crafted it is. Listening to “Break Into My Heart” is like experiencing an especially emotional and heartfelt scene in a good play; you wonder to yourself how exactly the actors can display such strong feelings night after night.—Aaron Carnes

Kfn\i f] Gfn\i FOR MORE than four decades now, Oakland’s Tower of Power has graced stages around the world with a signature blend of R&B, funk and rock & roll, scoring a number of their own hit songs as well as performing with the likes of Santana, Little Feat, Huey Lewis and Elton John. Originally formed as the Motowns in 1968 by Emilio Castillo and Stephen Kupka, the band quickly changed its name to Tower of Power and began making a reputation gigging around the Bay Area, eventually getting the attention of local concert impresario Bill Graham, who signed the group to his record label. Throughout the ensuing years, the band, which performs at the San Jose Civic on Dec. 8 with WAR, became known for a soulful sound that was propelled by an outstanding horn section and earned Tower of Power hit singles such as “So Very Hard to Go,”“Soul With a Capital S” and “What Is Hip?”

San Jose Civic “It’s wonderful to play the Bay Area, no matter where it is, it’s always fabulous,” says Castillo, who now resides in Scottsdale, Ariz. “We have a big history in San Jose. We used always go there to buy our equipment and were part of that band circuit before we were famous. We used to the play the Warehouse.” Tower of Power has come a long way since those early days, and recently released a 40th anniversary box set featuring selections spanning the band’s history—an immensely successful run that Castillo says still amazes him. “When people ask me if I ever had any idea that it would turn out like it has, I say the idea when I started it was to get to Sacramento—to be ‘on the road,’” Castillo says. “It’s gone far beyond my wildest dreams. I’ve traveled the world, and played with great, great musicians. I never imagined it would be like this.” As with many long-running rock acts, Tower of Power’s success did not come without a few bumps in the road, some of which Castillo says nearly destroyed them. “We made every mistake you could possible make,” he says. “We abused ourselves; we nearly lost our career to drugs and alcohol—but we got clean around ’88 and started taking a spiritual approach.” In addition to a healthier lifestyle and positive outlook, an ever-present independent attitude seems to be the secret behind the group’s continued inspiration. “We make our music selﬁshly—we make it to please ourselves, and we’ve noticed that when we do that, our fans dig it,” Castillo says. “By virtue of that fact, it’s easy to go to work every day.”—Sean McCourt
