Meddling “Alum Rock Union School District trustees are making moves to fill

a vacancy left by Darcie Green’s departure” (SanJoseInside, Nov. 15). Merc editor Barbara Marshman’s meddling created this situation. In 2010, her editorial said that Darcie Green was the best-qualified person for election to a four-year term on a board of education compared to every other candidate for a similar position in the entire county. But when a position opened up on the county board of education (Craig Mann’s resignation) this year, someone submitted Green’s name to fill the vacancy. Marshman failed to editorially note that Green was already committed to serve Alum Rock for the four-year term she was endorsed for in 2010. Marshman stayed silent on Green’s commitment. Without Marshman’s meddling,

We begin with the emergence of San Jose Rock Shop at 30 N. Third

St., an idea long overdue. Ever since Guitar Center moved to Stevens Creek Boulevard back in the ’80s, there has not been a legitimate musical instrument shop in the neighborhood. Now there is. Located just north of a Hispanicowned colon-cleanser retailer and around the corner from a cheap Vietnamese tailor, one finds 8,000 square feet of instruments and amplifiers, rehearsal space and repair services. Yes, the building formerly occupied by WORKS/San José years ago is now reconfigured and replete with guitars, strings, keyboards, drum sets and more. Lessons are offered, consignment gear is available and bands can rent rehearsal space. Also inside is a private club, à la 924 Gilman in Berkeley, which presents all-ages live shows with no alcohol.

From Third Street, one can look right through the front window and see the gear. As its moniker suggests, the place rocks. With no effort on my part, one half of the polar opposition manifested itself. A few weeks ago, I slithered inside San Jose Rock Shop on a chilly afternoon and flipped through a stack of cheesy ’70s songbooks filled with piano/organ arrangements of TV and movie themes, easy-listening hits, pop schmaltz and campy lounge classics from before there was such a genre— exactly the stuff I grew up playing on a Lowrey Genie organ and exactly the material I played while originally taking keyboard lessons at Stevens Music. That stuff has been an integral component of my psyche ever since. My admiration of camp humor and the ridiculous side of everyday life can perhaps be traced to playing that cheesy material for years. For most of my younger years, I could not explain to any of my music circles why I was literate in and appreciative of easylistening crooners and crappy sitcom music. It gets even better. To exemplify how

the other half operates, a previously unnoticeable door exists on Third Street, right next to San Jose Rock Shop, leading one into an adjoining room. It is there that Jai Tanju’s Seeing Things Gallery now sits. I didn’t even have to knock. The door was open—I searched, and I found. Fittingly, the grand-opening party at Seeing Things Gallery this month featured the ’80s hardcore-punk photography of one Mr. Bill Daniel. Gritty live-action shots of Black Flag from 1982, nearly 4-by-5-feet, exploded off the wall for everyone to see. Daniel shot the band on ancient whatevermillimeter film, and the images convey the aggressive, brutal nature of Black Flag shows back in the day. I never saw Black Flag live, but their seminal violent masterpiece, Damaged, was the first punk album I ever bought, even though I snagged it right about the time hardcore was essentially dying. Experiencing Daniel’s photography of Black Flag from the Damaged tour brought it all back. The dark, disenfranchised isolation conveyed by that slab of vinyl altered my universe, and I don’t think I ever went back to popular music afterward. When first playing that LP, I remember looking at my record shelf and thinking that none of it was interesting anymore. Black Flag was where I wanted to be. My entire identification with punk and the dark side of the quotidian world can be traced to that album, which I purchased as a teenager. Right now, at 30 N. Third St., one can look through the front window and see Daniel’s photographs. So you can imagine the two windows I’m looking through. One goes into San Jose Rock Shop, while the other goes into Seeing Things. What a concept. For all of my life, I feel like I’ve been trying to reconcile those seemingly opposing parts of my psyche—easy listening and punk rock—and there they were, right in my own ’hood. No need to look outside or elsewhere. I have 30 N. Third Street to thank. A sense of integration has emerged, binary opposites are transcended and the grand synthesis is now at work.

Downtown San Jose’s brand-new Grub Shack, a most appropriately named restaurant, appears to

be handling both models with hearty, tasteful success. Grub Shack had been operating as a catering business the past two years and just recently moved into its brick-andmortar location near the corner of Santa Clara Avenue and Third Street, where it shares a wall and customer base with Freddie J’s Bar and Lounge. The restaurant, which is still in its soft opening stages, serves a fusion of Pacific Rim flavors with Hawaiian favorites in mind, emphasizing simple yet hearty dishes. Previously housing a mediocre cheese-steak shop, Grub Shack’s location has been spruced up by the new owners for a hipper, friendlier environment. The staff takes orders on iPads from across the bar

where you can watch the kitchen prepare your meal. Artwork by Orly Locquiao of Humble Beginnings Tattoos and the sounds of Hawaiian riffs complete the Pacific Rim motif. While experimentation rules as Grub Shack feels out a solid menu, a lineup of house favorites has begun to emerge. The in-house-marinated Kalua pork appears quite a bit on the menu and is a sure item to try for first-time diners. The moist, tender, sweet pork is served up a number of different ways, from over rice to sliders and even tacos, all with a side of Grub Shack’s tasty chipotle aioli. For $7, the rice plate comes with two scoops of rice, a side of macaroni salad and a hearty portion of the pork. They also serve the Hawaiian favorite Loco Moco: a hamburger with a fried-egg patty atop a large bed of rice with gravy and macaroni salad. My favorite, and Grub Shack’s signature item, are the Kalua pork sliders ($7), which consist of three King’s Hawaiian sweet rolls sandwiching rich Kalua pork and a tasty dollop of the chipotle aioli. The result is a winning combination of sweet, spicy and salty. If you’re making a visit over from Freddie J’s and have a serious case of the munchies (and possibly a group of friends who can help you devour them), the Kalua pork fries are a must. Just as it sounds, $7 gets you a large dish of French fries topped with a gut-busting portion of pork with sour cream, chipotle sauce and jalapeños to boot. Another notable dish is Grub Shack’s lumpia, offered in several varieties, each for only a buck. I fell in love with Mama Ana’s lumpia, a tasty fried roll of carrots, peas, corn and other veggies, made by who else but the store’s Grandma Ana. Other favorites such as Hawaiian poke and Spam musubi are also available, and the final menu is a work in progress—the fun part of a new restaurant. Currently, Grub Shack is open for lunch from 11am to 2:30pm and again for dinner from 5 to 8:30pm. I would hope that as Grub Shack’s popularity grows, its hours will run later. Don’t write off Grub Shack as a typical Hawaiian barbecue drive-in. Despite its not being quite ready for its grand opening, I like what Grub Shack has to offer for downtown: a tasty, pleasing menu, large portions and a potential solid spot for eats after a night at the bars.

I suspect they offer tacos more for the people tagging along who are not in the mood for a sandwich. You can get good tacos at dozens of other taquerias in south county, but these tortas (available between $5.50 and $6.50) are unique—and the raspados (available between $4.50 and $5) are something I’d never seen at a taqueria before. On my visit, the owner of Las Tortas was friendly and quite accommodating. She told me that raspados are a commonly sold street food in Mexico. They are made with syrup and shaved ice, basically like Hawaiian shaved ice, but Las Tortas adds a little something extra: real fruit. Some of their flavors include strawberry, kiwi, coconut and tamarind. Their top seller is mango served with a shot of chamoy sauce—which itself has a strong, complex array of flavors (sweet, sour and spicy) and is made from chiles and pickled fruit. It is typically served on sweets in Mexico, and is, in my opinion, an acquired taste. My personal favorite was the pecan, which had actual pieces of pecan mixed in with the crushed ice and syrup. Surprisingly sweet, it was like drinking a slice of pecan pie. I would have saved it for dessert had I known what I was in for. I tried three tortas: Hawaiiana (ham, pineapple, bacon), Milanesa (breaded steak) and Cubana (milenesa, ham, pork leg). All the sandwiches were served with lettuce, avocado, tomatoes and onions and came on a thick doughy roll that is baked fresh in house. The Cubana was my least favorite, though it was still delicious. The Milanesa was better and had a thicker breading. It was like eating a country-fried-steak sandwich. The Hawaiiana was my favorite, which I wasn’t expecting. Filled with thick-cut and lightly grilled ham, it was just bubbling with flavor—and served with rings of fresh pineapple. Besides the lengthy lines at the new spot, customers are greeted by a burrito “roller,” who helps them build their meals with a wide choice of ingredients. In addition to tacos and nachos, Freebirds stakes its fame on burritos, offering three sizes: Hybird (its smallest), Freebird and the 7-pound Super Monster. Burrito customizing begins with flour, corn, spinach or cayenne tortillas. From there, Freebirds supplies more than 20 options for fillings, including two types of rice, three different beans and tasty ingredients such as roasted limes and Freebirds’ death sauce. The meat selections are also notable, as the place uses natural grass-fed beef, hormone-free chicken and tasty slow-roasted pork carnitas. The fresh ingredients and DIY technique result in a pretty tasty burrito. Yet it couldn’t be ignored that there was a definite feel of corporatized fast food and murmurs of patrons comparing Freebirds to Chipotle could be overheard in the restaurant. Additionally, if you’re dying to try Freebirds because you remember the original from Santa Barbara—go to Santa Barbara. There is no secret menu or secret sauce at this new location. HAWK JONES Caravan, San Jose Fri – 9:30pm; free In May, Hawk Jones released their EP Que Rico, which proved to be far weirder than anyone had expected. Before that, they carefully rode the line between weird and familiar, with one foot planted firmly in the safe rock & roll traditions and the other somewhere in outer space. Que Rico took that one familiar foot and obliterated it. The terms “experimental rock” and “math rock” don’t do them justice. Their music is off-the-charts odd, packed with chaotic, technical, mind-boggling licks. Yet, it manages to still be accessible—which is the weirdest thing of all. (AC)

DICK DALE Blank Club, San Jose Fri –9pm; $20 In conversation, Dick Dale is a little nuts—bouncing between his innovations with Leo Fender, his experience with martial arts and the exotic animals he’s trained on his SoCal property. It shouldn’t be a surprise after 50 years of shredding surf-guitar tunes around the world in front of maxed-out amps. Nor should it be a surprise that his appearances at the Blank Club—a holiday tradition at this point— continue to draw capacity crowds. The opening riff on his classic “Misirlou” has crossed generations since Dale debuted the machinegun spasm of notes in 1963, inspiring Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), Black Eyed Peas (“Pump It”) and thousands of guitar players

BLACK FRIDAY 5: AN F/X EVENT Brix, San Jose Fri –9pm; free Who would have thought that after nearly two decades since its closing, the F/X would continue to draw an enthusiastic crowd for its annual reunion event? That’s because the F/X was no ordinary club. Originally open between 1990 and 1995 on South First Street, the F/X hosted live shows, dance nights and other creatively weird forms of entertainment. It was home to a loyal group of regulars, making these gatherings really more of a family reunion of sorts. This is the fifth edition and will feature DJs Rick Preston, Harry Who, Chainsaw and

A DJ battle champ and L.A. radio show host in the late ’80s and early ’90s, the popular underground DJ and producer has re-emerged over the past few years after being reinvigorated by the dustup movement. Mysteries of Paris A KIND of movie-long dream sequence, Leos Carax’s bizarre and mesmerizing Holy Motors follows a man of mystery during his long journey to the end of the night in Paris. He’s a role-player of sorts, but one for whom cameras are not necessary. Carax’s protean star is the amazing Denis Lavant, a kind of cross between the SCTVera Rick Moranis and Walter Huston at his best. Lavant’s crepuscular M. Oscar is perhaps some kin of Fantomas himself: a key figure in French fantasy, related equally to the Phantom of the Opera and the omniscient Bond villain. Even the poster for Holy Motors recalls the mask of that shape-shifting demon of chaos: always sought, never found, still at large. In a white stretch limo loaded with makeup and costumes, piloted by the handsome, droll Edith Scob, M. Oscar goes on “assignments” of a frequently malign nature: anything from wetwork to the deliberate crushing of an adolescent girl’s spirit. Some of his other labors are more ambiguous: posing as a dying man with the help of a grieving niece. And at a factory, Oscar performs a dark ballet in a motion-capture suit studded with glass bulbs. In this startling dance sequence—in the studio days, Carax could have been a master of the musical—Holy Motors suggests that

sometimes the strangeness of what can be caught with physical acting and makeup beats the imaginary worlds wrought by animators. Oscar goes in for melodrama. One lowcomedy sequence features the return of Lavant’s one-eyed monster Merde (the Holy Motors terror of Japan in Carax’s episode in the NR; 115 min. Tokyo! anthology). The Opens Friday, nasty red-headed troll Camera 3, San Jose scoops up a deliriously impassive Eve Mendes from a photo shoot in Père Lachaise, where she is posed as a gold-lamé-wrapped goddess Diana. Mendes proves herself here—not just as a raving beauty but a really good sport. More sophisticated regret is evince d in a sequence in the empty shell of the Art-Deco landmark La Samaritaine, the now-closed department store that loomed over Carax’s immortal The Lovers on the Bridge. Holy Motors is sometimes like watching a cryptic Cirque du Soleil bit that doesn’t come off. But the arrestingly different way Carax cracks the mystery of an actor’s life makes this film one of the year’s best comebacks.

(PG; 127 min.) Pi (Irrfan Khan), a friendly professor in modern Montreal, is lunching with an avid American (Rafe Spall). Pi unfolds the tale of his singular voyage to the Newer World from his home in the French colony of Pondicherry—a Tintin-esque locale. The son of a man who believes only in logic, Pi becomes pious in all the religions, in passages that director Ang Lee envisions as a handsome pastiche of Satyajit Ray. Dad runs a zoo. When the money runs short, the family must sell the critters to overseas collectors. The animal freighter sinks, and young Pi (Suraj Sharma) is stranded in a lifeboat with a wounded zebra, an orangutan and a hyena. Then, out of the waves, comes the zoo’s tiger, Richard Parker. The tiger has never seen a Disney movie; he has a vicious temper and refuses to be gentled. Worn down by weeks of certain doom, Pi puts his

Jack Frost (voiced by Chris Pine) is recruited by the team of mythical heroes protecting the children of the world ever since the end of the Dark Ages: Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman and the stroppy Australian Easter Bunny (voiced by Hugh Jackman). A bit busy, and it skews young. Among a cast of superior voice actors, Jude Law seems light-loafered to play a prince of darkness named Pitch. But this 3-D-animated film is often dashing. There’s a lot of pleasure in watching Alec Baldwin’s outrageously hearty Santa. He’s tattooed, Russian, formidable and bearish. He’s slightly scary, just as Santa was when one was a child, contemplating someone you’d better watch out for. There’s an element of

A draw to atomicblaster fans: the chapter about the tears of a clone (Doona Bae) enslaved at a New Seoul restaurant of the future.This business doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t transcend the trap of the literary ďŹ ction writer delving into sci-ďŹ â&#x20AC;&#x201D; stripped of the prose, the plot is as bald as the shiny-domed oppressors of the future. SKYFALL (PG-13; 142 min.) 007 (Daniel Craig) recuperates from a riďŹ&#x201A;e wound and follows a trail of clues leading to a dangerous hacker called Silva (Javier Bardem). Starting with a wounded hero, Sam Mendes gives up more backstory than a lot of James Bond fans would want. In the interests of rebuilding the series, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re drilling for bedrock even at risk of making Bond yet another little boy lost and in need of reparenting. The photography (by Roger Deakins) is a landmark for digital ďŹ lm; there are stunning sequences in Istanbul, a Chinese red-dyed Macao and Shanghai. And the virility of Daniel Craig reaches Clark Gable levels; it seems no one will ever look less ducky in a suit. Too bad the ďŹ lm is undervillained. Sure Bond can save England, represented here by the Tube, by J.M.W. Turnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s painting The Fighting Temeraire, by Tennysonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ulysses,â&#x20AC;? by even a homely china bulldog. But just England? The music industry, on a 10-year juice fast of plummeting record sales, is devouring the trend. Unlike traditional bands, which require a crew and multiple band members and instruments to put on a show,

most EDM artists bring their laptops—and that’s it. The New York Times has reported that top DJs like Deadmou5 and Tiesto can pocket $1 million for a festival appearance and $10 million for a Las Vegas nightclub residency. Realizing that these shows are like Cheesecake Factory entrees for their bottom line, promoters are churning out EDM festivals like a Twinkie industrial unit in the 1960s, from the migrating Electric Daisy Carnival to the Ultra Music Festival in Florida. Some are comparing the EDM movement to the housing bubble or dotcom IPOs—a cheek-flapping rise followed by the inevitable dubstep drop. However, EDM represents a cultural shift, as rock & roll did for baby boomers, and promises to leave a permanent tattoo on young music lovers growing up with the stuff. Between the adolescent identity

and subsequent nostalgia fans associate with it, and the low-cost/ high-profit margins for artists and promoters, EDM is not going away anytime soon. And as much as it’s a boon to the music industry, the deepseated passion of the artists and the fans are what has and will sustain this movement. San Jose is getting in on the act, hosting the seventh-annual Give Thanks concert at the newly renovated San Jose Civic on Friday, Nov. 23. The show features artists such as Showtec, Manufactured Superstars, Dirtyphonics and upand-coming Russian beat maker Arty. Born Artyom Stolyarov, Arty is a 23-year-old producer and DJ who has made a name for himself with a prolific body of work created in three short years. Endorsed by the likes of Skrillex and Paul van Dyk, and rocketing to No. 25 on the 2011 list of the Top 100 DJs by DJ Magazine, Arty already roams with the best of them. Arty plays a signature classic house style that can be twirl-in-a-meadow euphoric or drag-you-onto-the-dancefloor-by-your-hair manic, and he loves his rising crescendos. Currently

touring the world at a torrid pace (Netherlands, United Kingdom and South Korea in late October before his current North American tour), he somehow finds the time to record singles, host a radio show and maintain an active Twitter account. Arty is no stranger to allconsuming work schedules, however. When he was just a budding EDM artist back in Russia, fresh off seven years of formal music schooling, Arty “spent 15 to 16 hours a day making music like nothing else existed.” “Very few things have changed since that moment,” he says. “I just started to travel a lot, and all musicmaking happens usually on the road now. But still, it’s all about passion and beautiful melodies.” He might be raking in a bit more dough and getting more praise, but it all goes back to his love for electronic music, having been weaned on EDM demigods Axwell (Swedish House Mafia), Deadmau5 and Eric Prydz. One thing that has changed for Arty as a result of his rising-star status is that instead of just listening to SHM on his ear buds, he gets to mix with the Nordic DJ himself. “My collaboration dream came true. We’re working with Axwell on a track together. It takes a lot of time, but I hope we finish it,” he says. Some guys might get caught up in the glitz. Some guys might get burnt out. While no one is immune, it seems like Arty has a chance. He still claims to get a warm fuzzy feeling after a great show or finishing a new track. That feeling, along with the support of his close-knit family, is what can keep him grounded amid the strobe light flashes of success and challenge. While the Civic Center and Arty’s team of managers and promoters are probably pretty stoked that, as an EDM artist, his shows are as cost- and laborefficient as that Hong Kong space-saver apartment on YouTube, Arty says he just wants to see as many people as possible have an amazing time. That’s what will keep them coming back for more, long after they age out of halfshaved heads and glow sticks.

New Trapt and Pounders IT HAS BEEN a decade since Los Gatos quartet Trapt hit it big with the nu metal single “Headstrong.” Ten years later, they’re getting ready to release their sixth studio album, Reborn, which arrives in January 2013. “Headstrong,” the band’s first and biggest single, came off their second album (and their first major-label release). It is just one of those songs that takes you right back to that specific time and place in the early 2000s when nu metal was really exploding—heavy melodic guitar work; hushed, pained singing mixed with angry screaming; and hip-hop-influenced metal grooves. It was all there.

While a lot of the bands from that scene have either broken up or moved on to different musical genres, Trapt has, for better or worse, stayed true to the original sound that made them famous in 2002. BACK IN THE STREET Local favorites Curbside are reuniting for a Blank show.

Curbside IN THE mid-’90s, San Jose was bursting at the seams with good bands. One of the best punk acts of the day was Curbside, an outfit that exemplified the energy and quality of the music being created at that time. After disbanding at the height of their career in 1999, Curbside return to the stage for one night on Nov. 30 at the Blank Club. The Blank Club Curbside began in late 1994 when guitarist/vocalist Josh Santaga recruited drummer Jiri Ciernava. Santaga had just Friday, Nov. 30; purchased a Ludwig Vistalite drum set and needed someone 9pm; $10 to sit behind it. Ciernava’s lightning-quick reflexes did not disappoint, and soon the outfit was joined by Mike Davis on bass and Sean Bjordahl on vocals/harmonica. In the very early days, Bjordahl would send lyrics to Santaga from the boiler room of the U.S.S. Ouellet, where he was stationed during a stint in the Navy. Upon discharge (honorable) from the Navy, Bjordahl joined Curbside as their front man. From the mid- to late-’90s, Curbside dominated the South Bay music scene, went on several European tours, sold a mountain of tapes and CDs and enjoyed recognition by local and international audiences before vanishing in 1999. By the summer of 1995, the band was going full steam, playing with acts like Fang, Goldfinger, Papa Roach, Incubus, Zeke, Supersuckers, Seven Year Bitch, Saxon, DOA and Mötorhead. “We just hit the ground running,” Santaga recalls. “We played a lot.” Curbside’s unofficial home base in Europe was Usti nad Labem in the Czech Republic. From there, the band would launch its European tours. Back home, Curbside were regulars at the Cactus Club, the Pizza Depot and other venues of the day. Their trajectory was cut short in 1999, when Curbside disappeared. Some would attribute this to their lead singer not showing up during an A&R showcase with Papa Roach. The official statement from the band lists the “Internet” as Curbside’s downfall. Today, the band is more or less the same. The only change is Shawn Packer, a member of local act Shitkickers, filling in for Mike Davis. With a respect and reverence for Mike D’s style, Packer is a perfect fit. Packer understands the work Curbside put in during their tenure. Curbside will return to the stage for one night in celebration of guitarist/vocalist Josh Santaga’s 40th birthday.
