Rising Up Whoever runs for District 3 had better have a massive high-rise development planned for downtown to save it from its decline (“Too Many Chiefs?” The Fly, Sept. 19). Downtown San Jose must be

vibrant, and the proposed candidate can do it by overdevelopment of the downtown area with a whole bunch of high-rise buildings, preferably residential and hotels. If not, no need to apply for or run for City Council District 3. CITY BLUE | SAN JOSE

V for Vendetta? I believe most cops are good upstanding men and women who chose the profession to make a difference and not to exploit a position of power in the community, but they should do some policing of their own, because stunts like this do nothing to convince the public that the cops don’t take personal

Come on guys, you have more important things to do than take pictures and leak them. It is so far beneath your profession. Nuclear Shame While both presidential candidates seem to want to impress voters with

their “tough on terror” stance, neither has mentioned a looming terror from the shores of one of our closest allies, Japan. I refer to Fukushima Daiichi, the nuclear power plant. The Reactor No. 4 building teeters on the brink of collapse. It contains 1,535 spent fuel rod assemblies cooled by a pool of water several stories off the ground. Should this building be toppled by an earthquake, an enormous amount of radioactivity would be released and picked up by ocean and air currents headed for our West Coast. ceremonies of leading archaeologists, scholars, shamans and the living Maya. I have not seen the film, but trailers and outtakes provide convenient windows. At the ruins of Copan, Honduras, for example, Kring Buset descends 20 meters underground to the preserved 1,600year-old Margarita Temple, where few cameras have ever gone. In Dresden, Germany, she visits the famed Dresden Codex, one of three remaining ancient Maya manuscripts. In Mexico, she examines Tortuguero Monument 6, the only place on earth where one finds an actual inscription citing the end of the current cycle, around Dec. 21, 2012. Thankfully, this is not some ’70s In Search Of episode, with Leonard Nimoy in plaid slacks standing by the Great Pyramids, nor is it Geraldo nosing around for Al Capone’s tomb. The filmmaker actually gave up a lucrative career to reinvent herself and live among the Maya, discovering their spirituality and cosmologies, which eventually inspired her to make the film. Aside from being the most watched documentary at MPIDoc

in Cannes earlier this year, the film has screened at a rocking variety of venues: the Chicago Institute of Noetic Sciences, the New England Antiquities Research Association Spring Meeting and the Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa. What a combination. Following the Tech Museum screening, the panel session will feature internationally recognized scholars and experts in various components of the Maya cosmologies, including Dr. Isabel Hawkins, a staff scientist at the Exploratorium; Dr. Michael Grofe, a specialist in Maya hieroglyphic writing and comparative mythology; and Jean Molesky-Poz, author of Contemporary Maya Spirituality: The Ancient Ways Are Not Lost. At that time, the refugee, whose brothers had been killed in the war back home, was so distraught with the bloodshed going on in Guatemala that she invited Molesky-Poz up to the hills above San Jose to perform spiritual Maya fire ceremonies. The experience helped solidify Molesky-Poz’s interest in the Maya traditions. “It was the first time, I began to see that there was a whole different spirituality that I was not in touch with,” Molesky-Poz explains. “And when we went to Guatemala with our 8-month-old daughter, they did a ceremony up in the mountains for her, up in a cave, and I thought, ‘Whoa, what is this?’ and I didn’t realize that was the moment I decided that this was something I needed to understand, for my children, for my marriage and also for a larger population.”

on my Metro credit card and my alter ego. As Metro’s food editor and restaurant critic I strived for anonymity, and my David Cook alias helped me do that. My dining companions were trained to know me as Stett Holbrook outside of restaurants, but I became Dave once we went inside. But after eight years of eating for a living and chronicling Silicon Valley’s food culture, I’m leaving to take a new job as senior editor at MAKE, a magazine and website about the maker movement and DIY culture. If you think about it, getting paid to eat and write about it is kind of ridiculous, particularly given the number of people willing to work for food. Being a food writer was a privilege and thanks to the editorial freedom afforded to me by Metro CEO Dan Pulcrano I was able to take that freedom wherever it led me.

In my case, it was the connection between the food we eat and the impact it has on the planet and the people and creatures that live on it. In my mind, food writing that doesn’t place the food into a larger, ecological context is part of the problem. The production of Food Forward, a documentary TV series I co-created for PBS, was a direct result of this green food consciousness I was able to discover in me at Metro. But I spent more time eating than engaging in Michael Pollanesque diatribes against the industrial food system. My highlight reel is long. Some of the standouts include my visits to Manresa (believe the hype—it really is a special place) and Love Apple Farm, the restaurant’s biodynamic farm in the Santa Cruz Mountains. I had one of the most otherworldly meals ever at Nami Nami, a Kappostyle Japanese restaurant in Mountain View that doesn’t get near the attention it deserves. I vividly recall my meals at Chez TJ when Christopher Kostow was in the kitchen. He has since gone on to three-Michelin-star stardom at Meadowood in St. Helena.

Some of my favorite meals were at restaurants no longer with us like Menlo Park’s Kaygetsu (the first restaurant I reviewed for Metro) and the humble La Juquilita in San Jose, home of some of the best Oaxacan food I sampled in the South Bay. Some of my best dining experiences weren’t $400 meals, they were at restaurants I found in the generic minimalls and shopping centers of Silicon Valley where Indian, Vietnamese, Mexican, Korean, Ethiopian, Japanese and Chinese places thrive. These restaurants are Silicon Valley’s true strength. Year after year, I took great pleasure driving down El Camino Real between Santa Clara and Sunnyvale looking for new Korean or Indian restaurants or anything else that caught my eye. And there was always something new. Udupi Palace, Jang Su Jang, En, Real Ice Cream, Tofu House, Sawa, and Lovely Sweets and Snacks all bring back fond food memories. Milpitas was another food haven. South Legend, Tirupathi Bhimas, ABC Seafood—I’ll miss you. The long shadow cast by San Francisco’s dining scene over Silicon Valley was a running theme over my years at Metro. In some categories SF beats SJ. But ramen is not one of them. I’ve said once and I’ll say it again: Silicon Valley’s ramen shops rule. I’ll long remember the porky, soupy, slurpable goodness of Kahoo, Ramen Halu, Santouka, Maru Ichi, Orenchi and others. The South Bay has San Francisco beat on Vietnamese food, too. I remember the first time I walked into the all-Vietnamese food court at San Jose’s Grand Century Mall. Nirvana. After eight years of nonstop eating and drinking in the South Bay, I’d say I know the area’s food scene better than most. Or at least I’d better. Silicon Valley is a great place to eat, if you know where to look. There’s still a gap in the mid-tier, reasonably priced places you can eat at on weekdays, but nice enough for a date or special occasion. There are a few new places—Hay Market, Zona Rosa, the Table—that show what I think is the way forward: small, chef-owned restaurants that cater to their respective neighborhoods. The future is local—local food, local owners and local restaurants. When you find a good place—localize it. That’s what the late David Cook would do. Thanks for listening for all these years.

Gordon Biersch’s FestBier, an amber lager, pays homage to the ﬂavors of Oktoberfest. The brew has a slightly sweet toasted maltiness and spicy German Hersbrucker hops. Far’s brand of moody, intense, power-house rock & roll inﬂuenced the emo scene, predating it by a few years. The group was, though, much more interesting

and authentic than the radio bands that followed them. After Far broke up, lead singer Jonah Matranga went solo under the moniker onelinedrawing. The music was more diverse, including a bit of folk, dance music, metal and indie-rock. What connects his songs is the same intense honesty and vulnerability that propelled Far. Onelinedrawing has that, but toned down, or rather is more selective about when to be outwardly intense. (AC)

million (chump change for Mitt but out of reach for the 47 percenters), and the man who made it all possible—Edvard Munch—didn’t see one dime of that money. Imagine how much more satisfying it would be to spend a lot less money and know that the artist is alive to appreciate the gesture. Such is the premise behind the Art Exhibition and Auction at the Institute of Contemporary Art. The annual showcase provides a chance to sample works in many styles by scores of area artists. GFKLJ GcXp MODESTLY STAGED, yet epic in scope, City Lights Theater Company’s 44 Plays for 44 Presidents is exactly what its title says: a string of short, mostly self-contained miniature performances that relate the history of the U.S. presidency. Originally conceived by Chicago’s Neo-Futurists, best known for their similarly structured Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, 44 Plays is being staged across the country this fall. Each of the 44 plays is quite different. Some are absurdist comedies; others solemn tragedies; still others musicals. While all the great presidents are covered, even Rutherford Hayes, 44 Plays for Benjamin Harrison and Chester Arthur (the latter played by a volunteer from the audience) get their 44 Presidents time in the spotlight. They are, after all, as much a part of presidential history as Washington, Lincoln Runs through Oct 21 and the Roosevelts. at City Lights Theater Company, San Jose In the first play, a stoic, godlike George Washington Tickets are (Bill Davidovich) dons a red, white and blue coat $24.95–$39.95 symbolizing the office of president. In the following plays, the coat makes its way among a four-member cast—some fight over the coat, while others, like William Howard Taft (Ruth E. Stein), wear it reluctantly. In the case of James Garfield (Davidovich), fellow party members must staple it to his back before he will put it on. There are quite a few colorful characters, from the party animal Grover Cleveland, played by Ken Boswell, to Karen DeHart’s somber Abraham Lincoln and Stein’s gluttonous Zachary Taylor. True to the Neo-Futurist aesthetic, there is no attempt at realistic portrayal, no attempt at resurrecting these men and letting them speak for themselves. The perspective is unabashedly present-day, which often results in humorous anachronisms (the recent Boody Bloody Andrew Jackson was in a similar vein). Some of the gags are especially funny if you’re familiar with the lives of the presidents, but no prior knowledge is needed to enjoy the stories. Indeed, many of the segments assume that the audience doesn’t know much and assume an educational tone. The end of the performance, however, transfers responsibility to the audience. Conspicuously open-ended, the production finishes with a heartfelt admonition to vote in November, to get your friends and family to vote, and to help write the next chapter in the history of the American presidency. Whether or not you believe that your vote counts for anything, you have to admire the sincerity.—Sean Conwell

Flynn is best known for his memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City and his second book of poems, Some Ether, which nabbed the 1999 PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award for Poetry. His work has been featured in major periodicals and journals such as The Nation, The New York Times, The New Yorker and the Paris Review. Enhancing his name recognition, his memoir was recently made into the ďŹ lm Being Flynn, starring Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore. Much of Flynnâ€™s work explores his dysfunctional family and childhood. Suck City, centers on the ďŹ rst-time meeting of the author and his alcoholic and homeless father. The poems in Some Nick Flynn Ether are mostly about his motherâ€™s suicide when he was a young adult. In an interview on NPRâ€™s Fresh Air, Flynn spoke of tough times beyond his fractured family and the hardship in his life when he worked at a homeless shelter: â€œI was young and quite lost and grieving. Iâ€™m not sure why working at a homeless shelter made sense to me, except that I needed to immerse myself in some sort of larger real-life situation to get me out of the cage of my mind.â€? That cage couldnâ€™t hold what he had to say. After earning a MFA in creative writing from New York University, Flynn published two poetry collections in a single year, Some Ether and Blind Huber, both of which were critically acclaimed and garnered numerous awards. One poem, â€œBag of Mice,â€? earned the Discovery/The Nation award. The work also led to a Guggenheim Fellowship for Flynn. Then, just three years later, he published Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, which won the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for the art of the memoir and cemented his reputation as a brave and lucid writer with quite a story to tell. Since that remarkable start, Flynn has remained an active writer, with The Ticking Is the Bomb: A Memoir and Alice Invents a Little Game and Alice Always Wins: A Play. He also teaches at the University of Houstonâ€™s Creative Writing Program. Reviews BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD (PG-13; 91 min.) A gumption-crazed little girl survives what looks like post-industrial living in Beasts of the Southern Wild. Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) lives in a waterside squatters’ camp called “The Bathtub.” A teacher in this swamp town displays a $200 custom-made tattoo on her thigh depicting some kind of mythical whangdoodle. That’s all the proof Hushpuppy needs that ice-locked beasts of the Stone Age could rise again. Hushpuppy tries to bond with her ailing dad, Wink (Dwight Henry), going on a boat trip with him when the storm waters inundate the town. The ﬁlm’s impressionistic selfseriousness is sweetened by Wallis’ own feistiness. (RvB)

(R; 137 min.) P.T. Anderson’s bewilderingly exciting film doesn’t offer a specific rebuke to L. Ron Hubbard. The story tells of a partnership between a shellshocked Navy vet of 1950, Freddie (Joaquin Phoenix) and a dapper, bigger-than-life fraud, Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Dodd picks up Freddie and conducts quasipsychiatric experiments on him, leading up to a new crusade called “The Cause.” Dodd’s stirring of Freddie’s soft brain heralds bigger things: the rise of the intelligence apparatus, the think-tank, Cointelpro, the lies of World War II furthered by new means. The bigger picture looms like Hoffman’s screenfilling head, demanding obedience in sickeningly insinuating tones. The voice echoes against the background of postwar America, a nation about to get gigantic. (RvB)

SLEEPWALK WITH ME (Unrated, 90 mins.) Brooklyn comic Mike Birbiglia co-wrote, co-directed (with Seth Barrish) and stars in an adaptation of his semiautobiographical one-man show. “Matt,” a standup comedian, has three worries: a stalled career, a girlfriend (Lauren Ambrose) who wants to marry and have a baby, and, lastly, his own untreated sleep disorder. A little misbehavior is part of the ﬁlm, but Birbiglia’s passiveness is lulling; Matt’s character is only shaped by his careerism. There’s something about this underachiever that must bring out the maternal side of women, because he’s got a noteworthy supporting cast of them. It’s not just the lively Ambrose, whose ﬁne red hair is woven in Slavic braids, but there’s also the bracingly odd Carole Kane, with a voice like an inebriated Betty Boop—not to mention Sondra James as the elderly, disinterested agent, and Kristen Schall as a masochistic MC at a remote college. Peninsula Features THE BIG EVENT at the Palo Alto International Film Festival is a preview screening of Rian Johnson’s Looper (Sept. 27 at 6pm at the Palo Alto Square). Johnson is a particularly quixotic director, influenced by the classic cinema to a degree unseen in others of his age. Brick (2005) stages a hardboiled detective caper in a suburban Orange County high school; the idea sounds rebarbative, but the result was ultimately more acute than cute and showed the capability of Joseph GordonLevitt (The Dark Knight Rises) for lean, tough acting. Johnson’s charming 2008 feature The Brothers Bloom is one of the best and least-seen of confidence-man movies, and he gave Rachel Weisz a chance to excel in Audrey Hepburn levels of froth. I’m avid to see Looper (which opens wide Sept. 28) co-billing Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis in a particularly twisty time-travel story of assassins in two future eras—if only to see what Johnson (a shrewd one for setting a mood inexpensively) will do outlining the world to come. At the festival, viewers will also find four free nights of outdoor movies to take advantage of the last of the summer weather. Thursday through Sunday, a series of food trucks will pull up to feed fans watching Dial M for Murder in 3-D

(Thursday) with a new Disney short, “Paperman.” On Friday: an anniversary screening of Stephen Spielberg’s 1982 E.T. with Variety editor David Cohen on hand to explain it all for you. On Saturday, YouTube presents a series of hand-picked online films. Sunday, also in 3-D, the festival will show the vintage Palo Alto swamp horror of The International Creature From the Black Film Festival Lagoon. Sept. 27–30; Palo Inside the walls, the Alto Square festival hosts a number www.paiff.net of documentaries, high school made shorts, classes and animation. Morgan Spurlock’s Mansome concerns the plight of the meterosexual. Andrew Neel’s shot-on-phone-cam King Kelly is a road-trip picture about an Internet performer on the warpath. Takashi Miike’s violent yet emotionally stirring redo of the classic Hara-Kiri, played in this area recently, but not in 3-D as here. And reflecting this young and ambitious fest’s emphasis on changing and emerging technology: Chris Keanelly’s documentary Side by Side contrasts the end of film, with the rise of digital moviemaking, which is appropriate, seeing how the Palo Alto International Film Fest offers a choice between oldmovie magic and snatched off the street imagery of today.—Richard von Busack

Following the release of his new album, Rebirth, earlier this year, the Jamaican native—who recorded his ﬁrst single 50 years ago—has

been touring the world, including performances at Coachella and, with Bruce Springsteen, at South by Southwest—and a stop at Shoreline Amphitheatre on Saturday for the Harmony by the Bay Festival on a bill that also includes the Shins, Tegan & Sara, Dirty Heads and Matisyahu. As one of the originators of the reggae genre, Cliff has inspired countless other musicians over the years, including Bay Area punk rocker Tim Armstrong of Rancid and Operation Ivy, who was brought aboard to produce and perform on Rebirth.

“When his name came up, I was familiar with it via Joe Strummer of the Clash, and knew that punk music and reggae music had a kinship, because reggae inspired and influenced punk,” Cliff says. “We address social and political issues in our music, and everything just kind of blended.” Though the album has a classic reggae feel to it, the punk spirit that Cliff mentions comes shining through on two of the tracks, one a cover of Rancid’s “Ruby Soho,” the other an excellent version of the Clash’s “Guns of Brixton,” featuring a fitting cyclical connection between all of the artists. In one verse of the song, which was released in 1979, the lyrics read, “You know he feels like Ivan/ Born under the Brixton sun/ His game is called surviving/ At the end of The Harder They Come,” referencing the 1972 film that starred Cliff and featured his title song.

“The fact that the last song Joe Strummer ever recorded was with me on my last album—that made it all seem right,” Cliff says. In choosing the title for the album, Cliff says he was inspired by a number of different things: “It is a ‘rebirth’ in many ways—my career, the music that I have created and helped establish—I’m going in kind of a different direction now, it was time to take another step forward, writing a new page of my career in the new millennium.” He continues, “Humanity is going through a rebirth period as well— the ancient Mayans had predictions about this year 2012, as a new change, a new cycle. The energy shift is from the constellation of Pisces to the constellation of Aquarius, it’s a new energy, a higher energy, a better time for humanity.” In addition to the success of the new album, Cliff has received many other accolades over the past several years, including Jamaica’s Order of Merit, and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “There were a lot of feelings with that,” he recalls. “One was of gratiﬁcation, and one was of encouragement in the sense that the music I contributed is Jamaican bred, and to be inducted into an American institution of such caliber like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it’s just a great feeling.” While the present is looking brighter than ever for the international star, he isn’t content with simply resting on his laurels and enjoying his current success. Cliff says he is working on several screenplays, including a sequel to the Jamaican gangster classic The Harder They Come and has many other ideas for future projects. “I’m always writing—I’ve got lots of music to record, whether it will be for soundtracks [for the movies] or the next album. I intend to break out of the mold as a festival act and break into the arenas and stadiums.”

The quintetâ€™s new album, Cabin by the Seaâ€”an ever so appropriate titleâ€”came out in June, and features a variety of feel-good tracks designed to transport listeners to a sunny beachside state of mind. â€œI think a positive message in music is always going to work,â€? says singer Jared Watson over the phone from a noisy tour stop in Las Vegas. â€œIt was lacking a little bit for a while with the whole emo phaseâ€”there was a huge depressed, â€˜blahâ€™ kind of music sceneâ€”and I think people just got over it, especially with all of the stuff going on in the world.â€? That infectious and uplifting spirit echoes throughout the 11-song collection, the groupâ€™s more laid-back, sophomore effort. â€œWe wanted this album to be more organic,â€? Watson says, â€œand if things werenâ€™t perfect, then we left them not perfect as long as they felt good, we just had a lot of fun with it.â€? He adds, â€œI think with the ďŹ rst album we were a little nervous and a little scared. This time we were just a lot more comfortable in our skin, we knew what we were capable of, we learned a lot, and we matured a lot.â€? The Dirty Heads have played a fair amount in the Bay Area and toured across the country several times now, but they are particularly excited to be performing at Harmony by the Bay. â€œFestivals are cool because you get to play in front of people that wouldnâ€™t necessarily come and see you,â€? While it may seem hard to regularly ďŹ nd these talents in a single place, a national organization called RAW started showcasing events locally this past May with a novel focusâ€”rather than cover one aspect of a cityâ€™s creativity, why not share them all at once?

From a quarter to a half of psychiatrists say they’re suffering from burnout at any given time. A study of more than 8,000 Finnish hospital employees found the psychiatric staff was 81 percent more likely to suffer from a current or past mental illness and 61 percent more likely to miss work due to depression. Psychiatric staff were twice as likely to smoke as other hospital staff and had much higher rates of alcohol use. If you were a woman in the mentalhealth field, Paul, you’d have an especially tough time of it. Compared to other female physicians, female psychiatrists have a 67 percent greater likelihood of suffering from psychological problems, primarily depression, and have a 26 percent greater likelihood of having a family history of psychological problems. They’re twice as likely to smoke, drink 50 percent more alcohol and rate their personal health much lower than their peers do. Many of the problems you’ll encounter as a mental health professional have a lot to do with the nature of the work—hey, skimming through my inbox any given week is enough to make me reach for the Thorazine. Jung called the transference of psychological problems from patient to doctor an “unconscious infection.” Patients can get violent, either with you or themselves. Dealing with certain types of patients can be emotionally draining, such as those with borderline personality disorder or victims of sexual abuse. You’ve also got stressors such as overwork, job instability, liability fears, paperwork overload, and disciplinary actions and monitoring. Let’s get back to the point I made at the outset. Does the mental health field attract people with mental problems? Research is thin, but some studies have found mental-health workers are more likely than average to have experienced early abuse and trauma. A much-cited 1963 study reported that 24 out of 25 psychiatrists had entered the field because of a wish to explore some personal conflict. That gives one pause. Sure, there’s value in consulting a health professional who’s been down the same road as us. But who wants their therapist thinking, “Maybe after I get this head case straightened out, I’ll figure out what’s wrong with me”?

On the contrary, there are indications some mental-health professionals enter the field because they do recognize their problems and think their work will help them get a grip. I can hear you saying, “That’s like becoming a cop so you can work on your anger management.” Please, a little sympathy. The best way to understand shrinks is to put yourself in their shoes. Let’s suppose you dedicate yourself to healing the psychic wounds of others. Are you probably nuttier than average? Depends how we define nutty. I haven’t seen good evidence you’re statistically likely to hear voices or otherwise show signs of clinical insanity. On the other hand, are the odds decent that you’ll show signs of what we might call maladjustment? No question, they are. Psychiatry and psychology, like police work, have long been recognized as highstress fields of practice due to constant exposure to humanity’s dark side. In interviews with medical students about their perceptions of psychiatry, researchers found a common concern was that “working with crazies will make you crazy.” For all that, the prevalence of mental disorders among mental-health workers didn’t receive much attention until the 1980s. A widely noted study from 1980 found 73 percent of psychiatrists had experienced moderate to incapacitating anxiety early in their careers, and 58 percent had suffered from moderate to incapacitating depression. To some extent this is simply a result of working in medicine—physicians in general suffer from higher stress levels and depression than the general population and have a higher suicide rate. But research suggests mental health specialists are particularly at risk. One British study found psychiatrists had nearly five times the suicide rate of general practitioners, and U.S. research indicates psychiatrists commit suicide at two to three times the rate of the general population. Similarly, depression, stress and burnout are high among physicians but higher among psychiatrists; the same is true of alcohol and drug abuse. Psychiatrists have a divorce rate 2.7 times that of other physicians and as much as five times that of the general public.

just been calling this “love” to cover for a bad decision that you let give birth to a whole litter of bad decisions. You did have help: the ﬂawed machine known as the human brain. When we do something dumb, our brain encourages us to ignore evidence we’ve made a mistake so we can hang on to our shiny image of ourselves as smart people making wise choices. This feels good in the moment but can, say, leave a person working hard to convince herself that she’s shallow and materialistic to want her equal. If you can accept making mistakes as a normal part of being human, you can put your braying ego on mute, critically assess all your decisions and admit your mistakes instead of getting into a committed relationship with them. As wonderful as it is to feel needed by a man, it’s best if it’s simply because he loves being around you, not because without you he’d have to eat raw hotdogs out of the package and take two buses to make the meeting with his parole officer.
