Over the Top Last night, I read Gary Singh’s article on Dennis Erectus (Silicon Alleys, June 20). I remember the Golden Age of FM radio very well. Those were my college days. There was a lot of creativity back then. It’s sad

that the corporate monsters have so tightly controlled every thing. These days, there appears to be a plethora of vapid, bland stuff on the airwaves. We now have an overkill of massproduced stuff in pop culture. There is precious little in originality or uniqueness. Dennis Erectus was unique, to say the least. Guys like Dennis have been squeezed out by catchy, fast-buck, use-once-and-throw-away types. I grieve the loss of Dennis the same way I grieved the loss of Hunter S. Thompson. You can’t replace dudes like that. When they were made, the molds were broken. By the way, not all ’70s hippies were mellow. I was a ’70s hippy with an irreverent sense of humor. With that in mind, you should be able to appreciate

why I have an avowed taste for the obnoxious over-the-top rants from Erectus. I have a lot of fond memories of my younger days with KOME as the background music. With that in mind I think we are long overdue for another cool radio station like KOME. KEN STOUT | SANTA CRUZ

early ’70s, I was troubled by the waste. L.A. has plenty of water already, and it is cheap. People worry about gas prices and electric bills, but no one worries about their water bill, so conservation is practically nil, both at the personal and public level (though I do meet a few mindful people there). When you fly over the L.A. apocoplex, you can’t ignore the tens of thousands of unused pools evaporating away and the water-hungry perfect lawns. Culminating in the 32nd annual Fountain Blues Festival presented by Metro this Saturday in St. James Park, Blues Week will attract fanatics from all levels of the social spectrum: luxury types and gutter snipes. This year, Chef Ramon has orchestrated a magnificent multiplicity of music for all to experience. If everything went as planned by presstime, the openingnight madness took place on Tuesday, July 10, at Johnny V’s, a glorious dive bar on the least-fashionable, emotionally emptiest block of Santa Clara Street, between First and Second. If any stretch of downtown San Jose exemplifies the blues, it would be that block. This Saturday, following the main festival, the official pro-jam afterparty will transpire at a polar-opposite venue: the Fairmont Lobby Lounge.

A new martini bar is currently being installed as I write this. Everything else occupies a space between those polar opposites. Poor House Bistro will feature music and events all week long, including the legendary Ron Thompson on Wednesday (July 11) and Chef Ramon’s annual Talking Blues discussion and conversation on Thursday, from 6 to 9pm. A Perfect Finish Wine Bar, San Pedro Square Market and even the Caravan Lounge will offer music in conjunction with Blues Week, even if the bands aren’t entirely bluesrelated. Everyone supports the idea of people actually having live music wherever they go, not just within a pair of headphones as they walk down the street. Blues Week should be a destination concept, not just for locals, but maybe even someday for those blues fans who attend festivals everywhere. “I have this vision for our city, and instead of sitting back and bitching about it, I actually want to try to do something tangible,” Chef Ramon told me. “In this case, I have a certain vision of our city embracing live music and

San Jose becoming a music destination like Seattle was, Austin, Nashville, Memphis and, yes, San Francisco, the city that has always given San Jose a complex. As someone who has been in San Jose since 1963 and sometimes found this city wanting, I think of something I believe Gandhi said, and that is, ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.’” If there exists a blues equivalent for “Hallelujah” or “Amen,” please insert it after that last bit. It may help, as Chef Ramon’s passion for the blues and its benefits for the community is such that he may not even be able to pay his phone bill after this whole thing is over. His out-of-pocket contribution to the affair is significant, but he also claims that San Jose City Councilmember Sam Liccardo was instrumental in helping to pull things together. Most of aall, Blues Week is not just local to dow downtown San Jose, in case that neighb neighborhood just isn’t your thing. More venues have now been added throu throughout the valley, enabling live music fa fans to participate and support the cause. The Cats Restaurant and Tavern, that historical venue right off the freeway in the cold green shadows of tthe Santa Cruz Mountains, will particip participate in Blues Week for the first time. And over in one of the more concrete industrial arrondissements of Campbell, the Grand Dell Saloon will host several acts. All in all, more than 15 venues are showing their support. But Chef Ramon is not stopping after this week. He has grand plans for the long haul. In addition to various Blues Week–affiliated events throughout the rest of the year, he plans to ratchet up the awareness. It will take an effort, but he is up to the cause. “The long-term thinking would be to have San Jose be almost like a Memphis West,” he says. “Where you walk down the street and blues is coming out of every restaurant. Clubs that don’t traditionally play the blues would all come together, where, if you were a blues fan, you’d go, ‘Hey, I want to go to San Jose because there’s something happening there.’”

Everyone has a view about barbecue because it is one of our most emblematic regional cuisines. At one point or another, most of us have had really good barbecue, and that experience has become the benchmark we use to compare all others. If you once reveled in great pulled pork in rural North Carolina, for instance, that meal become your standard of

excellence. And if you’re from Texas or some other barbecue hotspot, your barbecue prejudices are baked in from birth. While California does have its own style of barbecue (Santa Maria red oak– smoked tri-tip rubbed with salt, pepper and garlic salt with a side of pinquito beans), it’s not well represented in general, especially not in Silicon Valley. There is good barbecue, just not much of it. I think that’s because we don’t have a native barbecue culture here, so it’s rare to find skilled pit masters and exemplars of a particular barbecue style. But everybody loves barbecue so when a new restaurant opens the fans come out of the woodwork to parse the restaurant’s regional style, depth of smoke rings and kind of wood used—and just generally geek out on barbecue. Redwood City’s 10-week-old Woodchuck BBQ is geekworthy. Woodchuck is the rare barbecue

restaurant that doesn’t profess allegiance to any one style of smoked meat but rather offers an array of influences and nails them all. Woodchuck excels with a dream team of barbecue styles—smoky Texas brisket, wonderful Carolina-style pulled pork, meaty St. Louis pork ribs, chicken, sausage, and unclassifiable, Fred Flintstone–size beef ribs. The restaurant is an enterprise between friends Tony Jensen and Mike Brown. As their story goes, they met at their last job and discovered a mutual love of carefully smoked meats that grew from competition into collaboration. Ultimately, they quit their jobs and took the plunge into the barbecue business. They clearly know what they’re doing. Brown apprenticed at Ole Hickory Pits in Cape Girardeau, Mo., under pit master Mike Mills, the only three-time competitive barbecue grand world champion. The restaurant is a welcoming, straightforward place with a long bar and views of happening Broadway in Redwood City’s reinvigorated downtown. The meats are smoked over white oak and apple. Everything I tried was excellent.

Smoke Rings

Most of the items come with a light glaze of the restaurant’s house-made bourbon barbecue sauce, made with fresh tomatoes instead of canned or catsup. There are four other sauces to choose: a molasses and brown sugar sauce, a spicy habanero and Thai chile sauce, a Carolina-style mustard-based sauce and, my favorite, a red pepper and vinegar sauce. The red pepper and vinegar-based sauce is superb with the pulled pork ($12.95), but I liked it with the brisket ($12.95), too. And speaking of brisket and pulled pork, those two were my ffavorites. The brisket is sliced a bit thicke thicker than I prefer, but the dry rub and slow ccaramelization of the exterior create a thic thick and flavorful bark and deeply ssmoky, juicy interior. The pink smoke rring extends a good quarter inch into the meat, proof of the meat’s time in the p pit. The pork is well shredded, moist and ssuffused with smoky flavor. Woodchuck serves three kinds of ribs: baby back ribs ($13.95 for a half slab/$23.95 for full), St. Lou Louis ribs (the same price as baby backs aand a meatier cut that’s closer to the belly belly) and the massive beef ribs ($14.95). The “Woodchuck bone” beef ribs are a beauty and a beast to behold, meaty, juicy, smoky but not smoked out. Baby back ribs are fairly common, so I went for the St. Louis ribs. The meat pulls away from the bone with the barest of nibbles, and the combination of fat, smoke and spice produced succulent mouthfuls of pork. The smoky smell on my fingers lingered for hours. I love that. Side dishes are good. I would have liked to see some collard greens on the menu (my Southern roots, I can’t help it), but I’m more than happy with the burnt-end baked beans. The burnt ends are trimmed off the brisket, and their crispy, smoky meatiness balances what would have otherwise been an overly sweet pot of beans. As is, they’re great. The creamed corn is quite good, while the vinegar slaw is decent, but unremarkable. Desserts? There aren’t any. But there’s good beer on tap, so enjoy that and some of Silicon Valley’s best barbecue.

After 15 years immersed in the tech industry, Santoso rediscovered her passion for baking and decided to pursue a Baking Arts & Pastry diploma at the Professional Culinary Institute. In 2007, she began Color Me Sweet, a petite dessert business that quickly attracted nationwide clientele. Riding the momentum from Color Me Sweet, Santoso founded Li’l Puffs in 2010, selling multiple flavors of homemade marshmallows. She can be found at the Evergreen Farmers Market on Sundays with Li’l Puffs in chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, mango, pineapple and a number of other flavors, along with vegetarian and vegan varieties. How long have you lived and worked in San Jose? I’ve lived and worked in San Jose since 1994. What do you like most about San Jose? I love the wide diversity of people and food. There’s no one place in the world where you can find such a wide varying of culture and gastric pleasures than in the Bay Area. The weather is definitely a plus, too. When did you first become interested in baking? Probably when I was old enough to turn on the oven on, about 7 years old. I’ve been baking off and on since. How did you start making your own marshmallows? It was after my culinary classmate introduced me to a homemade marshmallow. It was amazing. I never knew marshmallows could taste that light and they melt in your mouth. I’ve always thought they were chewy like the kind you buy in the stores. What is your favorite thing about your job? Food chemistry. I still have a little bit of a geek in me, so I love experimenting with new flavors and recipes. What are some of your favorite places in San Jose? I love the atmosphere of the Evergreen Farmers’ Market, where I sell my marshmallows every Sunday. It’s a family-friendly community where families hang out for the day. Upright Grand Runs July 11–Aug. 10; Lucie Stern Theatre, Palo Alto; $24–$73 Defying calendric expectations, TheatreWorks begins its new season in high summer with the world premiere of Laura Schellhardt’s Upright Grand. Not exactly a music, but a play featuring live music, Upright Grand keys in on the relationship between a bar-piano-playing father and his daughter, who begins modestly but blossoms into a concert-bound classical pianist. The play was developed last year at TheatreWorks’ New Works Festival, which begins this year in early August with five plays in progress. Upright Grand previews this Wednesday–Friday, and opens Saturday.

Cavalia Cavalia celebrates the majestic beauty of equine and human performers alike. Along with dream-state backgrounds July 18–29; and live orchestral music, the show features 38 artists from $44.50–$129.50 all over the world. The idea for Cavalia came to Latourelle when he was doing another show that called for one horse. www.cavalia.net “When the horse came onstage, it was stealing focus away from the performers,” Latourelle recalls. “That’s the first time a horse attracted my attention. I just realized that the horse is probably the most beautiful animal on Earth.” Latourelle spent almost 10 years studying horses before the first Cavalia show made its debut. “We built our humanity with horses,” he explains. “Without horses, we wouldn’t be where we are today.” With 47 horses in tow, Latourelle and the Cavalia crew do their best to be sure the animals are comfortable both on the stage and in the stable. “Every time they travel between two cities, we give them 10 days of pasture,” Latourelle says. “In total, they have at least 50 days off per year when they go to pasture—so they have time to recoup from the traveling, they have time to relax and then they go to the show.” Latourelle adds, with a smile, “Overall, for a horse, it’s a privilege to be in Cavalia. I wish I could get pampered as they do.” Latourelle also feels that horses have done a lot for humans in the past, and that Cavalia is a kind of tribute to that fact. “I wanted to make sure that the animal was being respected,” he says. “So I think that what is behind the show is a recognition of what the horse has accomplished for man since millions of years.” The show will be located under the White Big Top tent at the intersection of Highway 101 and 87 East on the 101 Tech campus across the street from the San Jose Airport.—Kim Diaz

A sing-along version (10 of the Fab Fourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tunes here) of the story of how the Beatles saved Pepperland from evil blue invaders. It has some weight to it (as in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Eleanor Rigbyâ&#x20AC;? sequence of British despair), and the Blue Glove was real nightmare fodder. Forever Young JONATHAN DEMME once made the best rock concert film ever. Neil Young Journeys, a film of Young’s 2011 Le Noise concert performance in Toronto, is up there with Stop Making Sense. Demme’s 2006 Young concert film, Heart of Gold, hit the nostalgia button too hard. That’s inevitable when you play the famed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. By contrast, this stunning Canadian solo show is a huge improvement, far more spare and upfront. Demme contrasts the baker’s dozen songs with a road trip: an 84-mile journey between Young’s childhood home in Omemee, Ontario, and the brick Massey Hall in Toronto, where Young is set to perform. The Massey stage is dressed like a hippie living room, with a row of amps in frayed yellow tweed, a fringed lamp with glass cabochons and a cigar-store wooden Indian. Around these props, Young works on his Frankenguitar Old Black and that beautiful hollow-bodied Gretch White Falcon. We also see a bare-entrailed upright piano, a painted-up grand and a Gothic pump organ. Seated at the last, with a harmonica holder on his chin, Young plays a knockout version of “After the Gold Rush,” with its spine-chilling, Bradburian last verse: “Flying Mother Nature’s/Silver seed to a new home.”

“Helpless” begins with the line, “There is a town in north Ontario…,” and we finally see that town, and it’s even greener and more peaceful than we might have imagined. The same fearless strength dwells in “Sign of Love” (an ode to an aged lover, E\`c Pfle^ who seems slightly Aflie\pj suspicious of affection) as there is in “Ohio.” On NR; 87 min. that 1970 song, Demme Opens Friday, slaps up big red GodardCamera 12, like capital letters with San Jose the names of the four victims at Kent State. This collaboration (Neil Young Trunk Show, from 2009, filling out a triad) demonstrates a remarkable trust between performer and documentary-maker. Neil Young Journeys doesn’t just sound like art, it looks like it. A scrap of blown-up Super8 turns into a blizzard of pixels, scattered like the embers of a skyrocket. Young becomes a series of thrillingly novel and noble abstractions: the imploding straw hat, the 10-day stubbled, shapeless neck filling up the screen. One drop of flicked saliva turns a circlet of the lens into a funhouse mirror. The cracked, seraphic tenor is a scalpel-edged instrument, but Young is nobody’s swan. To Fountain Blues headliner Elvin Bishop, however, Chicago blues represents an even greater power. It’s an electrical force of nature, and he remembers the first time it struck. “I heard some by accident one

night, driving from Memphis, Tennessee,” says the Oklahoma-raised Bishop. “I heard it on the radio, and it went through me like lightning. I don’t know, I just went crazy for it.” The man he heard on the radio that night was Jimmy Reed, who released his first album in 1958, when Bishop was 16 years old. Though less well known than fellow Chicago bluesmen like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, Reed had as much lasting influence as any of them, influencing Elvis, Van Morrison, the Yardbirds and many more. He was practically an obsession to the Rolling Stones, who have covered many of his songs. He hooked Bishop, too, and after that, Chicago was like a beacon. He was a National Merit Scholar finalist in high school and went to

the University of Chicago on a full scholarship to study physics. Now, however, the truth can be told. “It was kind of my cover story,” admits Bishop of his esteemed academic career. “It was my ticket to Chicago. Gradually, the music just crowded it out.” How could it not, considering that within three years Bishop had met up with fellow student Paul Butterfield and begun meeting blues heavyweights like Waters and Wolf. For five years, Bishop played guitar (often alongside Michael Bloomfield) in the Butterfield Blues Band, whose 1965 debut record would decades later be named one of the 500 greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone. He released two more albums—and played the Monterey International Pop Festival—with the band, before beginning a legendary solo career that has lasted almost half a century. Echoing that first experience he had with the music, Bishop has brought his own power to

the blues—especially in concert, where he’s defined his career with the relentless energy of his performances. He sometimes goes several years between albums, but recently he’s been at the top of his game, with 2008’s Grammynominated The Blues Rolls On, 2009’s Chicago Blues Buddies (his last collaboration with late Chicago blues great and fellow Butterfield alum Little Smokey Smothers) and 2010’s acclaimed Red Dog Speaks. In all this time, the Chicago sound has lost none of its power. “It’s so strongly emotional,” says Bishop. Canned Heat, which will also perform Saturday at the festival, is best known as the rock band that gave Woodstock its theme song in “Going Up the Country,” one of the group’s No. 1 hits. But all of their most famous work is bluesderived, and the band started out covering Chicago bluesmen like Willie Dixon and Howlin’ Wolf. time of its late-’60s “classic By the ti lineup”—which included current lineup”— members Larry Taylor and Adolfo de member Parra—Canned Heat was mixing la Parra— Chicago blues with psychedelia, including Muddy Waters’ “Rollin’ includin Tumblin’” in its 19-minute and Tum “Parthenogenesis” medley. Harvey “Parthen Mandel, who joined the band in 1969, got his start on Chicago’s South Side with bluesman Charlie Musselwhite. Still, the best Chicago blues primer at the festival might come from, well, John Primer, who performs with Lurrie Bell as part of a set dubbed “The Chicago Blues Guitar Shootout.” Primer was taught slide guitar by Muddy Waters’ sideman Sammy Lawhorn, and then played for both Waters and Willie Dixon. He brings a classic Chicago power to his solo work, and in May won a 2012 Blues Music Award for Best Traditional Blues Artist. Bell, who grew up on Chicago blues as the son of legendary harpist Carey Bell, was named Most Outstanding Guitar Player in 2007 by Living Blues Magazine.

The Supersuckers GOD, I’ve missed Eddie Spaghetti. As leader of the Supersuckers, the guy put out one of the Top 10 rock records of the ’90s with 1999’s The Evil Powers of Rock ’N’ Roll. His anthems, from “Born With a Tail” to “Rock Your Ass” and everything in between, gave country-punk the AC/DC-sized kick in the ass it always needed. Well into the 2000s, he was killing it every night live. The Supersuckers always seemed to me like a model for 21st century indie bands—they put out records on their own label and released absolutely every inch of live tape they could, not to mention that they were masters of merchandising. A lot of what they were able to Blank Club do was thanks to their manager Chris Neal, who ran their Mid-Fi Records, but unfortunately he’s no longer with the Wed., July 18 band. Nor is one longtime axis of their two-guitar attack, Ron Heathman, the yang to Dan Bolton’s yin. Their releases in 9pm; $35/$30 the 2000s were sporadic, and lacked the overpowering rush of their earlier records (although they did allow Spaghetti to show some emotion and range on songs like “Breaking Honey’s Heart”). Finally, the band went on hiatus in 2008, and it seemed like the end. Spaghetti has carried on with his solo records, which are pretty much laid-back and fun country albums, and completely different from the Supersuckers (even in their country incarnation, which was great, too). Sundowner, which he released last year, had him turning “Everybody’s Girl” by sick-punk kings the Dwarves into an actual love ballad, yet another stroke of genius. But the best news was that the Supersuckers were recording again, with Heathman’s replacement “Metal” Marty Chandler backing Bolton and a brandnew drummer taking the place of Scott Churilla. Apparently, they got back on their feet again thanks to Thin Lizzy, a metal hero of the band whom they’ve covered for years. Then came the tour with Nashville Pussy, and now they’re on the road with their longtime pal the Rev. Horton Heat, who brings them to the Blank Club on July 18.—Steve Palopoli

Amy Robbins AMY ROBBINS does a great show on KSJS with Badcat on Thursdays, featuring what she calls “dirty robot sex music.” They are maybe the most overcaffeinated duo on the dial, rattling the halls of San Jose State with yelps and screams and all kinds of ridiculous ramblings. But Robbins’ aggro silliness can’t hide the fact that she has a keen ear for the pop-dance gems that are often lost in the overly fractured, everLos Gatos shifting electronic subgenres. Like the original AM disc Bar and Grill jockeys who plucked the hookiest songs out of obscurity and made rock & roll into good radio, she mines the electro Thursday; 10pm frontier not for its artiest or most technically accomplished statements, but for the rush of its most insistent should-be hits. In this age of endless hot girls going DJ, the 22-year-old Robbins is unfortunately probably better known for having been on the 49ers Gold Rush cheer squad, but hey, in this day and age, you gotta take the followers where you can get ’em.
