A ’60s Icon I very much enjoyed reading Dan Pulcrano’s piece on the late William J. Craddock, local writer, raconteur and iconic character of the culture of the ‘60s (“Our Sixties,” Cover story, July 11). I had the good fortune to count Billy as
a friend from those early days until his passing in 2004, at first primarily due to his admiration for my father, Neal Cassady, and other writers in his circle, such as Jack Kerouac, from whom I think Billy patterned some of his own work. Adverse Adverts Hi Metro, I read your paper cover to cover weekly. I race to get it every Wednesday after work—thanks for putting it out there! I do have a small complaint, unfortunately, about having to have to wade through all the cannabis ads and the sex adverts.
I realize advertising is advertising and the bills have to get paid, but there is an ethics level in question here. I am not religious nor do I compulsively come down hard on these topics. I’m merely pointing out that when you advertise the sex ads, you gather more of this kind of person reading your paper. Sex is awesome but with a person you love. Where there’s addiction and perversion, I recommend not to capitalize on this “mental disorder” for money reasons. This just validates those conditions, which degrade a society. Facebook Meets Expectations in Earnings Report Today Facebook announced its first ever earnings as a public company and met analyst expectations with a report of $1.18 billion in sales and a profit of 12 cents a share. Although positive, this report didn’t satisfy investors, with the company’s shares dropping 10 percent afterward. “Our goal is to help every person stay connected and every product they use be a great social experience,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO, in a statement. “That’s why we’re so focused on investing in our priorities of mobile, platform and social ads to help people have these experiences with their friends.” Analysts expected $1.15 billion in revenue and profit of 12 cents. According to the report, Facebook now has 955 million users, up 29 percent from last year, and 543 million mobile users, up 67 percent. Revenue from advertising was $992 million and represented 84 percent of Facebook’s total revenue. This report comes a day after Zynga, the social gaming platform used by Facebook, reported losses that it blamed mostly on Facebook. Zynga, which in March accounted for 15 percent of Facebook’s total revenue, watched its stock fall 40 percent today. This put pressure on the social media giant’s shares, and also had analysts looking to Zuckerberg for a strategy.
According to sources close to Reuters and Bloomberg, Apple is preparing to unveil a new project at a major event on Sept. 12, which is expected to be the newest version of the iPhone. Reports from many tech blogs and AllThingsD have also confirmed that the Cupertino-based tech giant will unveil the iPhone 5 at the event. Apple launches like this are some of the biggest events in Silicon Valley, and if the next iPhone is released in September, it could help boost Apple’s quarterly numbers come this fall. Last week, photos of what the iPhone will look like were constructed from leaked parts assembled outside of a manufacturing plant, according to CydiaBlog. Tech bloggers expect the “iPhone 5” (if that is its real name) to have: 4G LTE connectivity; a larger 4.0inch screen; a taller, thinner body; a

Google Fiber Is Here—in Kansas City at Least This past Thursday, Google announced specifics on its hyped-up, super-fast Internet. It’s called Google Fiber, and at 1000 Mb per second it’s 100 times faster than your average, old, non-Google Internet. Fiber features cable-style TV service, but it’s Internet-only (no cable) plan is really affordable at only $70 a month. The problem is that as of now it’s only in Kansas City. KC beat out more than 1,100 other cities to be the testing zone for the project, and Google said it was because of the enthusiasm of the residents. Even though we’re all bitter and jealous toward Kansas Citians (if that’s even what you call them), it will be really interesting to see how two of Google’s experiments play out. Since Google Fiber is offering an entire city Internet that’s faster than any broadband can produce, this could highlight the widespread need for quick Internet connections, and innovations in providing it. Google predicts that this could unlock a number of new business opportunities. “It’s easy to forget how revolutionary high-speed Internet access was in the 1990s,” the company said in a blog post. “Not only did broadband kill the screeching sound of dial-up, it also spurred innovation, helping to create amazing new services as well as new job opportunities for many thousands of Americans.” Google Fiber also is the search giant’s wild dive into providing a cable-style TV service—a move that must be terrifying for Internet and cable providers like Comcast.—MM

this book exists in every single branch of the San Jose Public Library system, as well at offices in City Hall and its Russian equivalent. It is an amazing volume to flip through. In the book, Yekaterinburg City Councilmember Yevgeniy Porunov writes that the relationship between his city and San Jose, launched in 1992, is not just for politicians but also for artists, business representatives and everyday citizens: “I hope that the urban landscapes included in this book will pique the reader’s interest in the other city’s people and culture, while encouraging a fresh look at one’s own home town.” Amen. I could not have written that any more succinctly. I usually avoid politicians, but when it comes to travel, I will be the first one to suggest that experiencing and writing
about another locale helps one to contemplate ones native turf. If the two locales in question already have an established Sister City relationship, then another dimension emerges to the experience. What’s more, the timing here is key, because San Jose was just selected to host the Sister Cities International (SCI) 2014 Annual Conference. Held every year for more than five decades, the conference will return to California for the first time since 1998, even though the state has the greatest concentration of sister-city relationships in the United States. I say it’s well deserved. San Jose, of course, has a much richer sister-city operation than many might realize. Twenty-six years ago, former San Jose Mayor Tom McEnery, along with Dublin Mayor Bertie Ahern, had a pint and launched the San Jose– Dublin relationship. That scenario has now either directly facilitated or formed a symbolic backdrop to an entire generation of exchanges, whether it’s high-tech companies moving into Ireland or some clown from San Jose’s weekly paper writing about Dublin

Besides Dublin and Yekaterinburg, San Jose is also sister cities with Okayama, Japan; San Jose, Costa Rica; Veracruz, Mexico; Tainan, Taiwan; and Pune, India. In many cases, artists are starting to participate even more. Folks behind the ZER01 Biennial, for instance, have already collaborated with their equivalents in Yekaterinburg on the Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art. Tim Quigley, president of the San Jose–Dublin Sister City Program, led the effort to bring the SCI 2014 conference to San Jose. Although he was in front, waving the flag, so to speak, an entire regional collaborative network of folks made the whole thing happen. Many Northern California cities, arts and education leaders as well as elected officials all prov provided human and logistical support support. Even better, a huge youth compon component just may emerge in the whole sshebang, proving a mechanism for high-school-age high kids to travel and particip participate in the sister-city program. All of th the above convinced the powers that be in our nation’s capital that San Jose was the right choice for 2014. “It was a very innovative, typically Silicon Valley—you know, a chaos, creativity and collaboration sort of model—that just totally wowed the selection committee in Washington,” said Quigley. Robin Lasser, one of the SJSU faculty artists who went to Yekaterinburg, said it was one of best things she ever did. She’d recommend it for any artist at any stage in his or her career. “To have the exchange, with some of us going over there, and having the Russians come over here, and having both cities fully back that exchange, really meant a lot to the Russians,” explained Lasser. “It meant a lot to them that the city cared enough about the arts to do this. And we felt likewise, when we went to Yekaterinburg.”

David Speakman is a freelance writer and in 2008 he and his partner were the first gay couple to be legally married in Santa Clara. He raised more than $1,000 from 44 donors on the crowd sourcing web site WePay [https://www. wepay.com/donations/no2chik] to appeal the restaurant’s zoning application to open a drive-thru restaurant on El Camino. “But being a bunch of hateful bigots is no crime in America where the First Amendment protects the rights of bigots to be evil…” Speakman wrote on the online petition. “But, we can fight the land use change and the increased danger to our population from cars diving up and over the sidewalks to get to fast food—a danger that is not worth the risk to our otherwise bicycle and pedestrian friendly city.” According to Speakman, the restaurant would not only contribute trash and the noise of idling cars close to a residential development, the development “exponentially” increases the number of cars driving over sidewalks, putting pedestrians and bicyclists at risk. According to Think Progress, the blog for the left-leaning Center for American Progress Action Fund, Chick-Fil-A has given at least $5 million to anti-gay organizations and has a 0 rating from the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, meaning the company offers no benefits or protections for gay employees. Company president Dan Cathy has had some choice things to say about gay marriage including: “We are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say ‘we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage’” and “I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about.” Last week, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee jumped on the Chick-fil-A dog pile and tweeted: “The closest Chick-fil-A to San Francisco is 40 miles away & I strongly recommend they not try to come any closer.” In response to the criticism Chick-fil-A said that the company will “treat every person with honor, dignity and respect—regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender.” The restaurant may not get a chance to make good on those claims if Speakman and his supporters get their way in Mountain View. Growing up at our family gatherings it was always full of great Portuguese food cooked by my mom, uncles, aunts and friends. I would stand next to them and help when it was need. The food was the focus point most of the day. I remember before the gathering the talk was “today we are going to eat good� and after the gathering the talk was “I’m stuffed, that was really good.� Those two statements are the drive and satisfaction for me today. If I can have our customers come into Bacalhau Grill saying that they are going to eat good today and after they leave they say “I’m stuffed and that was really good� it makes my day.

But that’s simply not good enough for Iron Maiden fans, some of the most rabid in the entire metal universe. So rather than playing, say, their 1982 album The Number of the Beast, this “Maiden England World Tour” will see the British metal legends actually re-create the 1988 concert video Maiden England, which was shot on the tour for the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son album. That means not only playing mostly the same set list (although some newer songs will be added), but also, as much as possible, recapturing the look and feel of the original video. (SP)
MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD Mountain Winery, Saratoga Fri– 5:30pm; $45-$85 Michael Franti has come a long way since his days with socially conscious political rap group the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. After he disbanded the group in 1994 and formed Spearhead, he introduced elements of funk, soul and reggae into the mix. Through the years, Spearhead have become less hip-hop and more of an amalgam of reggae, Afrobeat, soul, island music, rock and dancehall— kind of a catch-all dance band. But the biggest change to modern day Spearhead is the tone. Franti’s music is downright joyful. He may still be a major political advocate interested in drawing attention to the injustices of the world, but
songs like 2008’s hit single “Say Hey (I Love You )” are happy toetappers. (AC)

Then she gained a bit of notoriety in her Runaways-esque group the Hollywood Harlots for Iggy-Poptype antics, like running across the tables at one restaurant gig, eating off the audiences’ plates and guzzling their drinks. So what’s so weird about her latest project, Alexandra & the Starlight
Band, is that it’s so refined. She still has plenty of attitude, but it’s been channeled into hooky, funky neo-soul, driven by her powerful vocals that are somewhere inbetween Tina Turner and Amy Winehouse. (SP)

D@B< ?L>L<EFI Dana Street Roasting Club Sun – 7pm; $5 Mike Huguenor, known as the longtime lead singer/guitarist for local indie-jangle-pop group Shinobu, has released his first entirely solo EP. When Huguenor says solo, he means solo, as in he recorded all the instruments, drums included, himself. Well, the
one exception is a trumpet line on the opening track, but otherwise it’s all him. The EP, called Bardamu, was released digitally today on Quote Unquote Records and will be available on vinyl from Suitors Club Records later this month. For fans already familiar with Huguenor’s quirky, brainy, selfdepreciating songwriting, the songs from Bardamu come off a little straightforward, at least on the first listen, but repeat spins reveal an understated weirdness different than his previous work. The show will also feature the Taxpayers, Dan Potthast and Happy Birth D-Fect. Some of the artists, including Huguenor, will be also doing some readings from their fiction and nonfiction writings. Heavily influenced early on both by Arthur Janov’s primal scream therapy and Brian Eno’s audio experiments, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith made music that was every bit as interesting as their alterna-peers like the Cure and New Order. Tears For Fears just happened to have more pop hits. Ironically, it was Gary Jules’ brilliant cover of “Mad World” (used in Donnie Darko) that made everyone re-evaluate the group’s talents as songwriters. (SP)

The Palo Alto–raised trap master
presents his latest project tonight for Los Gatos’ Jazz on the Plazz. “I’m not the kind of drummer you would think of as being a real stylist,” says Tana, 60, from his home in Belmont. “I don’t dream of putting myself in the same breath as guys like Tony Williams and Jack DeJohnette. Their styles are so strong, and they’re innovators. I’ve spent my whole career being supportive in different situations.” It’s true that Tana has thrived as a first-call sideman. Since he graduated from New England Conservatory in the early 1970s he’s performed and recorded with an array of jazz legends, including saxophonists Sonny Rollins, James Moody, Jimmy Heath, Zoot Sims and Sonny Stitt. But he’s also distinguished himself as a savvy bandleader and canny talent scout starting with TanaReid, the stellar band he co-led led through the 1990s with bass virtuoso Rufus Reid.
Tana’s latest album is the highconcept Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (Sons of Sound), a session exploring title themes from James Bond films, covering songs like “Nobody Does It Better,” “Live and Let Die” and “Gold Finger” set to an enticing array of rhythms. The band, called Secret Agent Men, features a fascinating cast of operatives, such as Japanese Hammond B3 organist Akiko Tsuruga, who’s been making a name for herself in New York City through her work with octogenarian bop-and-blues alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson. Tana draws mostly on a reliable cast of Bay Area players like reed master Melecio Magdaluyo, guitarist Jeff Buenz, and bassist Gary Brown, all-purpose sidemen well versed in Latin American grooves. Percussionist Kenneth Nash, who rounds out the ensemble, has been a true secret agent in recent years. A pioneering world jazz drummer with a vast range of credits, he’s largely been absent from Bay Area stages since he started devoting most of his time to production in his Oakland studio. The only musician featured on the album who’s also on the upcoming

gigs is Nashville jazz vocalist Annie Sellick. She’s been most visible outside of Tennessee touring with fiddler Mark O’Connor’s Hot Swing combo. But her most recent album, 2010’s Street of Dreams, pairs her with unimpeachably swinging trios led by pianist Gerald Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton. “She’s a jazz singer, but you can hear all these pop and country influences,” Tana says. “She’s got a certain vibe that’s really attractive and sophisticated.” Like in many jazz projects, the real secret agent behind Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is the arranger, pianist Larry Dunlap. He took the assignment seriously, immersing himself in the 007 filmography, listening closely to the incidental music for ideas he could incorporate into his arrangements. “I’m really into Brazilian music so there’s some of that in there, and it gets a little bluesy sometimes,” says Dunlap, whose latest album Um Renovo Musical explores the songs of the great San Francisco–based Cape Verdean composer Amandio Cabral. “I just tried to keep it interesting, tried to get a feeling of movement since the movies are full of action sequences.” Tana traces the Bond concept back to an album he recorded in Japan in the early 1990s, Secret Agent Men, featuring Hammond B3 legend Dr. Lonnie Smith. Another high-concept album, the session focuses on TV and film themes like “Mission Impossible,” “In the Heat of the Night” and “Charade” set to insistently funky grooves. An arrangement of “From Russia With Love” planted the seed for the Bond project, which was spearheaded by Sons of Sound, the New York City label that licensed Secret Agent Men for U.S. release in 2002. “It’s really in the jazz tradition to take pop songs and movie music and reimagine them,” Tana says. “I remember an album of Benny Golson playing film themes, and Sonny Rollins playing ‘Alfie.’ Jazz players are constantly looking for new material to interpret.”

Ivy League Exorcist (which can be seen on the website, cultjampro.
com) had been planned sometime before the Louisiana governor’s political possibilities heated up. Today, however, Jindal has been short-listed for the Republican vice-presidential nomination. Jindal may be a heartbeat away from becoming Exorcist in Chief. Last year, Ivy League Exorcist’s writer/producer Troy Davis saw a news aggregator’s mention of Jindal’s 1994 essay in the New Oxford Review: “Beating a Demon: Physical Dimensions of Spiritual Warfare.” The essay related the governor’s first-person experience of the 1990 exorcism at Brown University of a fellow student named Susan. David read the Jindal story and thought, “I’d really love to see this as a mumblecore film, made just the article described the events.” Making the film, said Glaviano, “was pretty speedy process—we got some really talented people who knew what
they wanted and what they were doing. It made direction easy.” Mark Balunis, with a black wig and some walnut-toned makeup, plays a very worried Jindal. Susan is played by Caitlin Dissinger, who shrieks Linda Blair–worthy blasphemies: “You whinyass titty-babies! … I queef at your Bible!” Terrifying, yes, but scarier still is the fact that they are aware of the film in Louisiana. Reporter Michelle Milhollon of Baton Rouge’s The Advocate got no response from Jindal, but the governor’s spokesman, Kyle Plotkin, went on record: “That movie is insane. It’s just plain absurd.” “We don’t know if Bobby Jindal has seen the film, but we sure hope he does,” says director Glaviano “Something happened in that classroom that was very real to Jindal— all we did was translate that happening into something visual.” The dialogue may be fanciful, but CultJam’s staging is just as Jindal described the incident: “It appeared as if we were observing a tremendous battle between the Susan we knew and loved and some strange evil force.”

And Jindal’s question, “Did I witness spiritual warfare?” has merit for audiences who take their exorcisms seriously enough to buy tickets for The Rite and The Devil Inside. Glaviano met writer/producer Troy Davis and cinematographer Francesca Stonum at San Diego State. Davis and Glaviano were students of theorist Larry McCaffery. Also involved as assistant director was San Jose’s Mark Schwab, known for his award-winning shot-in-three-days film The Last Time I Saw Soap. Producer/writer Davis is a West Virginian who hopes to shoot his and Glaviano’s upcoming feature film, Insect Fear, in Wheeling. “It’s influenced by David Lynch and Cronenberg, with a little Harold and Kumar thrown in,” Davis explains. Davis had just got the news that Jindal’s people had seen the film: “‘Insane and absurd’!—that’s music to my ears! I didn’t see this as a hatchet job,” Davis says via phone from Los Angeles. “I think this exorcism was a manifestation of this satanic panic in the ’70s and the ’80s. There were fantastic claims of satanic abuse. Former satanic priests became bornagain preachers, claiming they took part in human sacrifices.” Although he produced the film, Davis wasn’t actually at the six-hourlong San Jose shoot of Ivy League Exorcist. “I had full confidence in Fran, Mario and Mark. Even though I have no prob with a writer on set, I thought, ‘Let them do it’.” Davis suggests: “People do stupid things in college. My stupid things were more like waking up on the shower floor of the girl’s dorm. In Jindal’s exorcism, nobody ended up being hurt. It wasn’t very thoughtful behavior. When they saw Susan having a fit, they should have called the paramedics. But it wasn’t like Jindal was trying to do anything bad. Even Obama and Biden did stupid things in school … but they weren’t cinematic stupid things.”

PerďŹ dious Albion has struck again, recolonizing “the Lucky Country,â€? which is now like the set of Blade Runner, complete with rain and sampans. To escape these all-too-plausible hardships, Doug decides to partake in ďŹ ctional memories through the Rekall Company, which is seemingly both forbidden while also advertised on huge billboards. Fremont-bred director Len Wiseman emulates the Bourne movies in cutting; he cast wife Kate Beckinsale in the part Sharon Stone played in the far superior and funnier original. Jessica Biel is the helpful rebel who aids Doug in his quest to ďŹ nd reality.

Some might have thought he was set up to fail, but what Elzhi did with that double-edged opportunity took the group to whole new level. Born Jason Powers, Elzhi was only 12 when Slum Village was formed in 1991, but as a teenager he saw the trio of rappers behind the group—Dilla, Baatin and T3—battling at open mics like the one hosted by Proof at the Hip Hop Shop on Seven Mile Road (dramatized in 8 Mile and immortalized on Proof ’s debut album, I Miss the Hip Hop Shop).
Over the course of 1996 and 1997, Slum Village recorded Fantastic, Vol. 1, which was as underground as underground gets. Officially, it never even saw the light of day for eight more years, but with bootlegs everywhere, the Detroit scene went crazy for it. This was almost entirely due to the production from Dilla, who recorded the album in his home studio. It also put the group in the odd position of releasing volume two of Fantastic before they had officially released volume one. To make things even weirder, they used an alias (J88) to release Best Kept Secret. Both Fantastic Vol. 2 and Best Kept Secret featured re-workings of songs from their unreleased debut. Maybe they would have stayed Detroit’s best kept secret if it wasn’t for Dilla’s breakout success as a producer. He was on A Tribe Called Quest’s production team and the group opened on Tribe’s farewell tour, linking them in fans’ minds with the De La Soul/Tribe alt-hop movement. This was a fair enough assessment
sonically, as they had a similarly soulful sound with completely unique beats. But as emcees, they couldn’t touch the depth of Tribe or De La—they just didn’t seem to have much to say. That’s where Elzhi came in. In 2002, Dilla was focused on his solo career, and Elzhi was brought in to more or less take his place. His lines and rhymes were more complex and interesting, a better match for the always-impeccable production. This single “Tainted” became an underground hit. Their self-titled 2005 album saw Elzhi’s lyrical talent in full bloom, as seen on “05,” maybe the group’s most powerful song. Baatin’s erratic behavior got worse and he was finally diagnosed as schizophrenic, so Elhzi and T3 took over, celebrating the group while also expressing bewilderment at the chaos around them. Dilla died in 2006 after a battle with various illnesses, and after a brief return to the group, Baatin’s body was found in his Detroit home in 2009. Despite all attempts to determine his cause of death, it remains a mystery to this day. Perhaps the snowballing effect of record-deal double crosses and personal tragedy finally caught up to them (or maybe, as Elzhi claims, that Barak Records label head RJ Rice (whom Elzhi called “poison”) is responsible, but in 2010, Slum Village finally gave out. With T3 not having released a solo record since 2006, Elzhi seems to be the last Slum Village member still actively making music. His output so far has been unusual to say the least, with last year’s impressive mixtape Elmatic putting his own spin on Nas’ debut album Illmatic (“Detroit State of Mind,” for instance, replacing “N.Y. State of Mind”). But it’s really his full-length debut that longtime fans are waiting for. Expected out later this year, its status is a bit up in the air thanks to Elzhi’s infamous perfectionism, but it has the potential to fulfill the promise of Slum Village once and for all.

Culo a Boca SEEING San Jose’s Culo a Boca live for the first time can be loosely akin to seeing Gwar live for the first time: it requires just as much time spent trying to figure out their costumes and obscene props as their music. “It’s harmonious chaos,” says Fista NoGagreflexa, one of the two singers, donning an outfit that can be best described a demonic ragdoll. Culo a Boca has taken its mesh of punk rock and theatrics to all kinds of extremes. The other vocalist, Poncho Verde, wears Caravan Lounge skin-tight leopard pants, no shirt and a Mexican wrestling mask. The rest of the band, Sideburns McBlood (bass), Rev. 9pm; free BJ Gums (guitar), Herpe Hancock (drums) and newcomer Dick Rigormortis (guitar) all do their best to look like fleshSat., Aug. 4 eating zombies. Their audience can be as wild as the band itself sometimes. Stories of people trying to take a dump onstage, GG Allin–style, and things breaking are not uncommon. Fista has had a personal request from an audience member for her to punch him in the face, which she gladly obliged. Another patron carried her around on his shoulders, and took some convincing to let her down. Culo a Boca utilizes props to enhance songs. One is called the Fear Boner. This is basically a leaf blower fashioned into a giant erect penis with a roll of toilet paper on the end. There are also two more props called The Clungholes; two flat, wooded cut-outs that look like two women bending over. It’s also rigged to shoot liquids out. “This chunky pair of nude vixens don lucho libre masks and generously bend over to shoot filth to whoever dares approach. Unfortunately sometimes this means one of us onstage,” McBlood explains. In fact, the last time they played the Caravan, the bartenders thought the second story had flooded, because of all the liquid dripping from the ceiling. McBlood claims they’ve never failed to win over an audience. “But our show has gotten us on the blacklist at more than a few venues, and every now and then there’s someone who doesn’t appreciate what we have to say about their shitty band,” he says.—Beau Dowling
