One such individual, a 19-year-old transient from Portland who goes by “Rags,� can often be found begging for change and food downtown or hanging out at SubRosa. Asked if he supports vandalism in order to spread anarchy, he says he’s “fine with it.� “Places like Urban Outfitters, they deserve to have their windows smashed,� he says. “This kind of thing happens every May Day. People shouldn’t be surprised. I just hope it woke people up that their corporate greed isn’t welcome.� Nonetheless, anarchist violence and those who support it are relatively rare in comparison to previous eras. Today anarchists break down into a myriad of different subsets based usually on their motivations and long-term goals. According to Wikipedia, collectivist anarchists, for example, vie for a world where small productionbased collectives frame society, anarcho-primitivists call for a return to huntergatherer communities and Christian anarchists hold that all earthly governments are a sham. As radicals, the groups often intermingle both socially and in organized marches with animal rights and environmental activists. For many Santa Cruzans, it’s an easy leap to link the May Day vandalism with the 2008 firebombings and the sabotage of construction equipment by eco-activists in Scotts Valley and at UCSC last year. Detective Dave Pawlak of the Santa Cruz Police Department investigated each of the latter incidents and says that defining the profile of a dangerous activist is easier said than done. He also says Santa Cruz is located on a radical “thoroughfare� that runs from Southern California through Berkeley, Eugene, Portland and up to Seattle.
“You can’t put these people into a mold,� says Pawlak. “You can have young people that are taught by Mom and Dad and you can have older people that are Mom and Dad.� Capt. Chuck Tilby, a 32year veteran of the Eugene Police Department, agrees that both violent and nonviolent anarchists come in all shapes. He also says the anarchists on the East Coast differ from those on the West. “On the East Coast, the anarchists are often tied to the labor movement. That’s not the case here. The West Coast seems to have the most active anarchist communities when it comes to elevating protest activities to criminal levels,� he says, “You saw this in Eugene in the mid-’90s and it got popular around the county after WTO. You can’t lump nonviolent protesters with the bad guys, however. One size does not fit all. These guys are often hijacking legitimate social protests and making it something it wasn’t intended to be.�
A Teaching Moment As Malkin’s compassionate anarchy meeting winds down, Mia Duquet, a longtime Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation employee who came curious but skeptical about the philosophy, hasn’t changed her opinion that taking government out of society’s equation is “too idealistic.� “What happened on May 1 reverberated and now the city is hiring eight new police officers that it can’t afford,� she says, referring to a recent announcement by Santa Cruz Mayor Mike Rotkin that, because of recent gang violence and the May Day riot, and despite an estimated budget gap of $3 million to $4 million,
the city will spend another $1 million boosting its force. “This could cause layoffs in departments like Parks and Rec. So when it starts affecting my family, I get concerned.� Modes, Malkin and other anarchists also concede that inspiring a city to hire more police officers is counterintuitive to anarchism’s widespread tenet of self-policing. Malkin, in fact, uses the upcoming hirings as a prime example of the benefits of nonviolent activism. “There is an inclination to want to force change,� he says. “The most violent word in the English language is ‘should.’ And telling people they should or shouldn’t do something, whether by governments or activists, can be coercive and cause harm.� For Modes, who still faces questions from FBI agents over the May Day incident, an upcoming court hearing over his role in an unsanctioned New Year’s Eve parade and what he says are daily death threats from angry residents, “shitstorm 2010,� as he’s called it on his Facebook page, will continue for some time to come. For business owners like Diane Towns of Velvet Underground and the vast majority of Santa Cruzans who have strongly condemned the destruction and the philosophy it’s been attached to, no amount of peaceful anarchist marches or courteous debates will erase the stain that the black-clad vandals left on the town and their cause anytime soon. But for Malkin—and, he hopes, for some of the more open-minded residents— May Day’s destruction has created an opportunity to teach people about the other side of anarchy. “Before May first, I don’t think you would have been calling me to talk about anarchy,� he says. “There’s always a positive side.� 0

Gov. 6WZa BVaYdcVYd’s 15th District Senate seat—but hoooooold your horses, cowboys! A lawsuit filed last week is trying to delay the June 22 special election and names one of the counties in the district, Monterey, as a defendant. The document says the special election ordered by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last month would put Monterey County in violation of the Voting Rights Act. Lawyers for the plaintiffs will argue that the special election needs federal approval from the Justice Department and that the dates set—a June 22 primary and an Aug. 17 runoff—do not allow enough time for the county to prepare. “They’re required to get the pre-clearing, and they haven’t gotten it and they need to get it,� says Gay Crosthwait Grunfeld, a San Francisco–based lawyer for the plaintiffs. The California Democratic Party is reportedly backing the suit. The complaint also says the election ought to take place in November, placing it on the ballot with higher profile, national contests, something Democrats had hoped Schwarzenegger would do on his own. The general consensus seems to be that a November election with a higher turnout would play out better for a Democratic candidate—in this case, John Laird. So they were necessarily incensed when Schwarzenegger stamped out those hopes hours after Maldonado’s confirmation, issuing the executive order for the June primary. Laird responded to the news by writing a letter to Blakeslee, asking him to temporarily put the competition aside and join forces in asking the governor to delay the election. “Because Monterey County is a Voting Rights Act county, there are serious issues about whether minority voters are being disproportionately disenfranchised because of the special election date,� Laird wrote. “Enough is enough. We will be spending millions of dollars that our counties desperately need on an election at the same time essential services are being cut.� The suit was filed in U.S. District Court and has already been assigned to Judge Jeremy Fogel in San Jose. —Jessica Lussenhop

Pretty Pathway It was a big old-fashioned Santa Cruz–style lovefest last Friday morning at the ribboncutting for the new segment of W^`Z eVi]

The sun was shining, the bicyclepowered blender was blending, the Derby Girls were preening and the politicians were politicking, which in this case meant explaining how much the thing cost ($1.1 million), who paid for it ($400,000 came from state Props. 40 and 50, $400,000 from the redevelopment agency and $300,000 from the city’s none-too-popular traffic impact fee) and whom to thank (former mayor and Tannery champion :b^an GZ^aan, Assemblymember 7^aa Bdcc^c\, Redevelopment director 7dcc^Z A^ehXdbW and city government, as represented by Mayor B^`Z Gdi`^c and Councilmember Ancc GdW^chdc). A lot of hoopla for a ribbon of asphalt. But then, the Highway 1 underpass has many charms, chief among them that it spares pedestrians and cyclists the horror of crossing the county’s busiest intersection (River Street and Highway 1) should they wish to travel from the Tannery or Harvey West to downtown, or vice versa. Now walkers, joggers and cyclists can cruise, easy as you please, from downtown to the Tannery along the levee bike path without so much as a middle finger from an impatient motorist. And the stretch of path from the underpass to the far end of the Tannery is a charming walk on the wild side, a brush with nature just 10 minutes from downtown. Tannery folks are also hoping it becomes a cultural thoroughfare. Once the next phase of the development is complete and the Performing Arts Center goes in, the path could become a route for concertgoers taking the quick walk from downtown eateries and apartments to the new venue. To Tannery resident 8]ZgnaZ L^cc, a practitioner of the quilting arts, the occasion held significance beyond greater convenience. “We’re so excited to have this,
because it really feels like for the first time we’re part of the community,� she said. “This has bridged us, and now we can welcome the community to us.� It was all so pleasant that we hated to contemplate the unbidden thought that came next, which is: how long before this gorgeous little piece of infrastructure becomes an expressway for the drug-addled and the furtive? Casting our eyes upward, we looked for lights. While lamps stood at regular intervals along the far end of the trail behind the Tannery, the stretch from the Riverfront Plaza to the underpass was illuminated by a lone, insufficient streetlight. We asked Rotkin, who was poised on his bicycle sporting helmet and reflective anklestrap, about it. “More lights are coming,� he assured. “By next week.� It’s good to know they’re on top of it. We’re thinking they’ll need to be. —Traci Hukill
Oil and Water The vulnerability of the oil-blooming waters of the Gulf of Mexico—where some 5,000 barrels a day are gushing into the sea from a broken wellhead—resonates deeply with residents of the Central Coast. Monterey Bay, one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world, shares striking similarities with the Gulf. Tourists craving ocean sports and marine life flock to its shores. A prime difference, however, is that there is no oil drilling off the Central Coast, and there won’t be soon: following the Deepwater Horizon debacle, Gov. Schwarzenegger backed off a plan to authorize oil drilling off the coast of Santa Barbara. And the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is off-limits no matter what the governator says. But a different petroleum product plagues our waters: plastic pollution. Save Our Shores executive director AVjgV @VhV says that 151,699 plastic pieces and 18,296 plastic bags have been collected through the group’s local beach and river cleanups since 2007. After a countywide plastic bag ban goes into effect, she predicts these numbers will decrease, just as the quantity of styrofoam on beaches declined sharply after it was banned in 2007 and 2008. Sea turtles are particularly vulnerable to oil and plastic floating on the ocean’s surface, as they often mistake plastic bags for their favorite food, jellyfish—a mistake that is often fatal. And now turtles are facing a new threat. Last week, CNN documented the first sea turtle caught in the growing oil slick in the Gulf. Davenport-based marine biologist LVaaVXZ ?# C^X]dah identified the turtle as an endangered loggerhead that had come to the surface to breath, and was struggling to do so in water laden with globules of oil. “From the time they are babies, sea turtles gravitate towards floating algae and kelp,� says Nichols. “An oil slick is not something they are used to, and they don’t move away from it; they may actually move into it.� —Maria Grusauskas

IENNA TENG hasn’t lost faith in the power of music to change the world, but she’s not putting all her eggs in one basket. The Saratoga-raised singer/ songwriter has earned a passionate following over the past decade with a series of albums distinguished by her luminous voice, poetically evocative lyrics and incisive melodies. While her songs tend toward introspection and character study more than advocacy, she has sought to align her politics with her art, whether partnering with
Habitat for Humanity on her 2007 Green Caravan tour or offering ecologically friendly merchandise. For the next few years however, Teng is putting music on the back burner. Her Saturday and Sunday shows at Yoshi’s San Francisco and Monday performance at Kuumbwa are the last in the area before she heads off to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to pursue a dual master’s degree in business administration and natural resources and environment, a program that will enable her to address environmental and social
issues working with for-profit companies. “My interest in this stuff shouldn’t be surprising,� says Teng, 31. “It shows up in songs from time to time and the organizations we donate tour proceeds and CD revenues to. . . . But there’s a limit to how effective I can be without further education. I want to know more, and do more. The ultimate goal is to somehow integrate what I’ll learn over the next few years with making music. Or at the very least, create a life where they exist alongside each other.� ¨

About three years ago she relocated from the Bay Area to New York City, and you can hear the impact of the teeming metropolis’s bustle all over her ambitious 2009 album Inland Territories. “The tempo’s kicked up a few notches, something to do with running after subway trains,� says Teng, who has also upped her game at the piano. While some Inland songs explore familiar Teng territory, using romantic relationships as metaphor for the existential condition, she also gets far outside of her own head. She credits her New York experience with inspiring her first venture into thematic songwriting, exploring politically charged issues such as illegal immigration and the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis. “New York is a very dense space and there’s a certain ever-pervasive awareness of all the different perspectives and cultures at any given time,� Teng says. “You’re surrounded by people who’ve immigrated from all over the world, with very specific identities, and it kind of seeps into your subconscious.�
Rhythm Fusion Just as important for Teng’s recent musical evolution is her creative relationship with percussionist Alex Wong, who produced Inland Territories and tours with her as a duo. Like Teng, he’s a New York transplant from the Bay Area. They first met in 2002 when his band The Animators played an open mic night at Red Rocks Coffee in Mountain View, and they all ended up hanging out together after the gig. “Two weeks later we turned on the TV and saw her on Letterman,� recalls Wong, who grew up in Palo Alto. “We’re like, ‘Who is this girl?!’� They stayed in touch over the next few years, and when Teng decided to expand her trio with cello and violin she recruited Wong to add a more assertive rhythmic sensibility. He has greatly expanded his sonic palette in the duo, traveling with an unorthodox percussion battery that includes one cymbal, glockenspiel, shakers, a snare drum with brushes and mallets, and a large boxlike cajon that he modifies with an effects pedal. “I approach drums from a writing standpoint, not as if I’ve got to express myself through them,� Wong says. “I can sit out for 16 bars and just play a cymbal splash, and I’m OK with that. Vienna’s music has a wide dynamic range. It’s very delicate sometimes, but sometimes
it wants to rock. I do a lot of stuff with time delays, giving it a produced, almost electronic sound, implying the drum kit without sounding too rocky or folk.� Teng’s more assertive sound has gone hand in hand with delving into the dynamics of her upbringing. Her grandparents fled mainland China during the communist revolution, and the family made its way from Taiwan to the United States in pursuit of opportunity for their children. She fulfilled the expectations of her immigrant parents as an academic high achiever with a computer science degree from Stanford. But Teng decided to walk away from a job at Cisco Systems in order to pursue her passion for music. Just as Teng shed her given name, Cynthia Yih Shih, her embrace of an economically unstable life in the arts signaled her rebellion against a career path that felt pre-ordained by her family. “I went through a period when I needed to declare my independence and I rejected what my parents stood for, writing off what they’ve accomplished and done,� Teng says. “I’ve had enough time to calm down and see that they’re deeply impressive people who have been through a lot.� On pieces like “Grandmother Song� and “In Another Life,� she uses her music to make an empathic leap into the lives of her relatives. Teng still faces disapproval, but in accepting her family as her foundation rather than her foil, her music has taken on another layer of emotional complexity. “When I see my grandmother, the disappointment is visible,� Teng says. “She wishes I got an advanced degree and married someone with a similar pedigree, with kids and a house. She had to run to air raid shelters. Her education was interrupted, and she didn’t have many options. That’s why she’s so desperate for me to take advantage of everything.� Her grandmother might not realize it, but that’s exactly what Teng is doing. She may not be pursuing the academic degree her family hoped for, but she’s embracing freedom and responsibility, choosing a path that leads to entrepreneurial spirit, self-expression and social consciousness.

The typical romcom hunk has been greenwashed here; Stan runs a gourmet cheese stall and has a herd of goats upstate. He apparently milks them through osmosis, because the farm goes on the backburner. The movie is a bizarre mix of the bland, expensive and clinical, yet Zoe goes into labor with perfect makeup on and an orchid behind her ear. Niels Arden Oplev and screenwriters Nikolaj Arcel and Rasmus Heisterberg recognized that more important than any of the hype swirling around the book is the protagonist at its center, Lisbeth Salander. She is the girl with the dragon tattoo, and she’s maybe the best fictional character to come around yet this century. Swedish actress Noomi Rapace is absolutely incredible in her ability to bring Lisbeth to life. She is a force of nature, pure and simple. Lisbeth is hired to dig up dirt on Mikael (Michael Nyqvist) but ends up helping him investigate the disappearance many years ago of Harriet, heiress to a creepy, feuding family of millionaires. Though it may use the U.S. title, the movie doesn’t shy away from the book’s unrelenting critique of the violence that society allows men to perpetuate against women, and though the scenes with certain unsavory characters may have been cut down in number, they are still surprisingly graphic. Probably indefensible but far better than the average customary raginggeezer vigilante movie; we’ve seen this movie before but rarely done this crazy, almost halfway to Gaspar NoÊ in its fatefulness, grim urban surfaces and misanthropy. Michael Caine as Harry Brown—a cautious, ill old Londoner with little left to lose—gives us everything Caine ever had in his prime: here is both the decency and the steel beneath it. It’s a happy experience watching Brown slowly decide to do what this movie assures him he needs to do. But Harry Brown isn’t dead from the neck up. Gwyneth Paltrow shows a nimbleness previously unseen (she has to act fast to get up to Downey’s speed). Broad, playful, well-cut and economically done, this movie isn’t just the first of the summer blockbusters—it’s the model for how they all should work. (RvB) 9719 /AA (R; 117 min.) Dave, a home-brewed costumed vigilante (Aaron Johnson), meets up with real professionals in the field: a Batman and Robin–esque fatherand-daughter team (Nicolas Cage, and the excellent Chloe Moretz, who was the wise little girl in (500) Days of Summer). Entertaining in parts, but director Matthew Vaughn has no feeling for the romance and mystery and vigilante lore: the movie has a nasty fan-boy quality, a hermetic focus that doesn’t see anything beyond the purpose of beating bad guys bloody. deftly—he’s enough of a serious comic book reader that he knows it’s a dreadful thing when a father bends his child to revenge. Bloody-minded little girls (thank heaven for them) may like Moritz. It’s nuts to call Kick-Ass the next Watchmen. The slamming violence and the dullard noms de guerre these superheroes pick for themselves show a comic-book tradition at the end of a line. Che’s outright rage at his son’s sexuality is tempered by the attentions of his lovely new neighbor Lena (Erika Alexander). Any positive representation of Aztlan has to be
applauded; the scenes of highly polished lowriders gliding through the Mission make their own statement of beauty and pride. Bratt is the definition of moviestar gravity: a man doing nothing but thinking about stuff and making it look interesting. The film, then, is a celebration of San Francisco. Problem is, San Francisco may be San Francisco, but it is still a city. So some hard-to-credit idealization mixes uneasily with real, street-level violence. (And it’s one thing to make a Sundance movie, another to openly filch a scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.) La Mission is a kind of overexemplified view of San Francisco as a city of healing and refuge: a vision of a place where everyone is wounded, and almost everyone heals each other. The dearth of narrative thrust and useful informational tidbits are a downside—the creatures swimming by are sometimes identified, sometimes not. They’re arranged by cuteness, color and shape rather than by districts of the ocean, as in the sturdy zonal structure of Earth. Bruno Coulais, the rising composer whose work was key to the success of The Secret of Kells and Coraline, is adept with musical scoring: the organ is never too heavy and the harp is never too light. You’ll want to miss most of the text; because this is Disney, the anthropomorphic angle is heavy; narrator Pierce Brosnan salutes the ancient wisdom of a sheepshead wrasse,
the smoochiness of a walrus and the smiling face of our friend the Great White Shark. Oceans’ cuteness is, you know, for the kids; it’s moments to clutch like a blanket when seeing the bottomless appetites underwater: a horrorsequence of a school of sardines under Scud attack by plummeting cormorants, frigate birds picking off a beachful of baby tortoises as if they were popcorn and a vicious crab/langouste bout that’s as bad as any streetfight.
