Haiti: The Sad Truth 0G B/: 03< ;=@2316/7

T 2AM THE RAIN started pouring in the Mission of Hope Camp, where most people sleep in shelters constructed from bedsheets and sticks. Six hundred people crowded into a shed already serving as a church and recovery room for injured people, trying to get out of the rain. With so many people crowded into such a small space, nobody could sleep. Everyone got wet and babies were crying; it was one of those nights when you just lose hope. Then, at 5am, the people started singing, using their voices to send up a strong prayer. In that moment I learned that the one thing the earthquake cannot take from the Haitian people is their spirit. During my five weeks in Haiti working as a freelance volunteer, I attempted to fill the gaps between the big relief organizations and the people in the field. I tried to coordinate delivery of food and supplies for shelters to those camps. I mapped the locations of camps and shared my information with any organizations in the area that could help. I also spent time just being with the people in those dirty, swampy camps, so they would know that someone cared. I traveled between hundreds of camps, mostly in the Leogan and Grand Goave area, where the earthquake originated. I was working with some small NGOs, the World Food Program, UNICEF, local organizations and freelance volunteers like myself. In some places like Leogan and Grang goave, all schools, orphanages and hospitals were collapsed, and the only places that were offering medic care were field hospitals operated by the American military, the Canadian military and groups of private volunteers. Meanwhile, thousands of American and Canadian soldiers, U.N. people and NGOS (non-governmental organizations) f looded the small island of Haiti. Port-Au-Prince airport had hundreds of tents, with thousands of aid workers, hundreds of laptops, faxes and copy machines. These were all supported by two huge generators that could have easily supplied the electricity of an average city. However, even with all this international support, nothing was moving forward to help these people! There were hundreds of new SUVs driving over every road and still, six weeks after the quake, most Haitian people were still sleeping under the stars with only bed sheets as covers and getting wet on a daily basis. The lack of impact by the U.N. and other big relief organizations bordered on a crime against humanity! I spent many nights sleeping in the camps in Haiti and driving between them on a motorbike while U.N. employees stayed at their base, claiming it was not safe for them to venture out after 5pm. Many U.N. officials have never even been in a camp after dark. When employees do leave their base, it is only to go from one meeting to another. Some organizations working in Haiti only handle coordination; their employees stay in expensive hotels, eat and drink well, and spend all their time on their laptops. I feel that 95 percent of monetary donations are going to unnecessary salaries, the purchase of new SUVs and logistics expenditures. I know for sure that even with all the logistic difficulties transferring aid into the island and the local corruptions, the international aid failed once again. I have worked in other disaster areas, such as Sri Lanka after the tsunami, and run into similar situations of wasting resources and time. However, the reality in Haiti crossed all limits. HE OVERFLOW CROWD at the opening of “Surf City Santa Cruz: A Wave of Inspiration� was a tsunami of positive energy. The Museum of Art and History’s three jam-packed f loors of galleries held some 700 excited people greeting each other warmly in their outdoor voices as if after long separation: telling stories, promising to meet, exchanging opinions, issuing invitations, dropping names that even the uninitiated recognized—Jim Phillips, Boots McGhee, Eddie Aikau, Doug Haut—and swapping accounts of recent events at places like Steamer Lane, Mavericks, Manresa and Four Mile. A sunny bonhomie was the order of the evening. Towering over the crowd in MAH’s imposing lobby, a score of streamlined totems stood upright, vivid of color and gleaming with an exhibition shine. On view through July 25, they are formed of balsa, redwood, fiberglass, styrofoam, resin and no doubt something like spaceage spiderwebs—all light, buoyant and smoothed to a mirror surface. “These are big wave guns, straight and fast, for making slow bottom turns,� explained Mike DeGregorio of BigWaterProductions the day before the opening, taking a few minutes away from helping install the boards to give me the lowdown. The history of board building in Santa Cruz is the story these boards tell, featuring shapers like Johnny Rice who’ve been active here since the 1960s. “This is an old redwood board,� DeGregorio said. “See the hole filled with resin?� Rice built such surf boards over

At the center of MAH’s lobby, a graceful persimmon lozenge stretches skyward. “A summer board,� DeGregorio offers. It’s flatter, blunter, longer and
wider than the “guns,� a mellower ride than the cheekier boards shaped for speed. A battered old veteran leans against a far wall, great chunks knocked off its edges, its surface gritty from decades of sand, salt and sun. At the top of the deck is a West Side Longboard Coalition logo and a dozen names. “It’s our town and it’s our turn,� the writing proclaims. Through all the grit, the maker’s name still declares that it’s shaped by Johnny Rice. “The board builders are the core of
the surf industry,� says Trace Tift of Old Skool Surf boards, crafting a wall display for his own 15-foot “homage to the hollow wooden boards of the 1930s.� The board is a graceful impossibility of hydrodynamics, a salute by one board builder to all who went before. “It’s appropriate that these boards and these people are represented in an art museum, this art museum,� Tift says. Power of the Primordial “Surf City Santa Cruz: A Wave of Inspiration� is not so much about surfing but about how surfing is connected to the creative spirit of the greater Santa Cruz community. Curator Susan Hillhouse has been working on the exhibition since she arrived at MAH in 2006, when executive director Paul Figueroa asked her to curate shows responsive to Santa Cruz art and culture. Beyond the stunning lobby display of surf boards, fins and surf paraphernalia, MAH’s galleries are filled with art by more than 50 Santa Cruz County artistsurfers. Hillhouse writes at the entry: “Some [works] are clearly about surfing and being on and in the water. Others are more subtle in their connection; however, because every artist in this exhibition is inextricably, profoundly connected to surfing, each work radiates
the euphoric flow of creativity found in the power of the primordial tidal pull.� Two surfers are bucked off one of these primordial waves in a humorous mural painted by Dave Gardner on the wall behind MAH’s grand staircase. “It is better to regret something you have done than regret something you haven’t,� Gardner writes as a meditation for the climb to the second floor galleries. Here one finds a wall of new works by Stan Welsh. In steel-framed diptychs he pairs large black and white photographs of a horizonless, glistening, unbroken ocean with a second panel made of unpainted plywood the concentric grains of which mimic the watery pattern. A steel shelf mounted amid the vastness holds a shiny white porcelain figure. In one, a woman looks into ¨

the distance. In another is an island, conveying stillness, immeasurable space and a human’s perspective on it. I asked Welsh how surfing influenced his work. “When you surf you are generally facing away from the land, staring out into a vast empty space, waiting and anticipating the next set of waves,� he said. “I am trying to capture that sense of space and anticipation: symbolically, the idea of ‘facing the future,’ wondering what is going to happen next and the anxiety that goes
along with that. Surfing didn’t have a direct inf luence on much of my past artwork, but surfing always inf luences how I feel, and helps me have a positive attitude about my life.�

1=D3@ AB=@G >3/9 3F>3@73<13 Packed with imagery—water towers, trails of cartoony ants, ripples and roads, listing diagonals of graceful bamboo branches, Japanese characters, calligraphically painted trees, busy clouds of charming f lies over f loating f lowers—the complexity of content is organized within a fascinating surface using both transparency and opacity, a sense of watery, deep images almost lost beneath the surface. I asked him about the process. With the paintings years in the making, Kaneg works to keep each one open. He says he starts out with lines, then applies an acrylic wash followed by a medium that pushes some areas back. Then the action starts. “Sometimes I bring forward what the medium pushed back,� he says. “It’s hard to push away images that I think are pretty, or good— hard to let go, but I trust they’ll come forward again. “I’ve spent 50 years surfing, staring at the water, water covering my eyes,� he continues. “When I begin to compose a painting I stare at and enter that space with single-pointedness. After so much water in my life, I see it washing things away and bringing things back. The movement in my work is pretty much that—like life itself.� Ea Eckerman’s giant “wave� of tree branches crests above the MAH staircase, while Don Fritz’s 122 raku’d ceramic tiles bespeak nothing of the water but everything of a playful look at life. Christian Zajac paints us into an impressionistic rising swell, while Morning Paddle by Reid Winfrey takes us along in the mist. A Who’s Who of surf photographers fills the ArtForum gallery. The familiar locations show just how close the sport is to life atop the cliffs of Santa Cruz. One memorable Randy Brown shot of Russell Smith at Mavericks finds the yellow-clad surfer plunging down an icy green cliff of water into the blue. Right now at conferences all over the world, curators are discussing how museums can be more relevant to their audiences: How to sound the right note, excite popular enthusiasm while educating, maintaining standards and drawing people back again in the future. This time MAH has found a clear note that rings like a gong.

Miracle Bro Man/Miracle frontman Dylan Travis on the band’s Santa Cruz beginnings and recent acclaim 0G 1/B 8=6<A=<
A
T ONE OF Man/Miracle’s very first shows, people were jumping around, breaking glass and generally going crazy. “Who knows what the genesis of that was,� lead singer and guitarist Dylan Travis says, “but we decided it was the most fun we could have within the context of a rock band.� As they continued to play, becoming regulars in the Santa Cruz indie music scene, they found their audiences getting bigger and wilder. “Suddenly, people were making us crowd surf at our shows,� says Travis. “It was then that I finally realized what punk was all about. The energy was amazing.� Four short years later, Man/Miracle is on the rise. The noise-pop quartet, now based in Oakland, has been mentioned on NPR, released a critically acclaimed album, received a positive review by the notoriously scathing Pitchfork, played its first SXSW Festival and embarked on a national tour with indie-rock fixture Rogue Wave. According to Travis, all the attention is still a bit surreal. “All this stuff is happening and it’s really exciting, but it’s also a little mindboggling,� he says, speaking by phone from his rooftop in Oakland. “We’ve been putting it all together for such a long time, and things are finally starting to take form, but it doesn’t feel real yet.� Before Man/Miracle was being touted as one of the great Bay Area up-andcomers, it was a Santa Cruz party band that cut its teeth playing local house shows and coffeehouses. It had a

reputation for stirring audiences into a frenzy with its high-energy balance of pop, rock and noise. But the momentum the band was creating came to an abrupt halt when Travis broke his back in a mountain biking accident. He was unable to play his guitar for six months, and it was a year before he could walk normally. “When you can’t move, all you want to do is get up and run around, dance to some music and do a push-up or something, but you can’t,� he says. “It definitely put us on a different track for a while.� Once Travis was back in playing form, the band members decided to stretch their wings and move to Oakland. Santa Cruz live music laws had been enacted, with their accompanying $800 fines, and the band was wondering where it was going to play. “The problem you keep running into as a rock band is that you need space to play where things can be loud and crazy,� Travis says. “Oakland provides that.� Once they moved, however, things weren’t exactly as they had imagined. Their first place was a moldy basement full of cockroaches. “It was a crazy transition from the coastal villages that we had come from,� he says. “But there was a lot of creativity there, and in the end, it was really a good thing.� The first full-length Man/Miracle album, titled The Shape of Things, is tight, catchy and full of energy, and people are taking notice. Its mash-up of pop and
experimental noise rock, Afropop and highlife has garnered the band numerous comparisons to Talking Heads, which doesn’t bother them at all. “There’s no denying that we love Talking Heads,� says Travis. “They’re an amazing band and we’re incredibly influenced by them.� The band’s goal, however, is not to appropriate music, but to deconstruct it and do interesting things with the elements. “We’re taking these disparate influences that seem irreconcilable and incorporating them into pop music and trying to make something listenable out of it.� The band also relies heavily on audience feedback to see what is working, what makes people dance and sing along. “Our music is not just collaborative with the band, but with the audience as well,� says Travis. “It’s about everybody getting through hard times, overcoming your situation and making the best of it.�

with its tiny locked chambers and prowling sardonic cat, still feels like magic. Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is more of a fashion show and a forced march. Screenwriter Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast) is sensibly trying to do a Wicked on the famous tale, complete with rivalry between witchy queens: the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) and the ghostly yet sugary White Queen (Anne Hathaway). The now 19-year-old Alice (Mia Wasikowska) is meant to quest for good in “Underland,� a place she misremembered as Wonderland. I’m a helpless Burton fan, but the colors here aren’t state of the art, and compared to Coraline’s solitude and thoughtfulness the finale turns out to be

Due to a wormhole, observed by a hot tub repairman or a Time Lord or something (Chevy Chase), three idiots (Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry and the ever soulful John Cusack) are transported back to their happier past at a ski resort in 1986. Accidentally transported with them is 24-yearold Jacob (the hilarious Clark Duke), a depressed middle-aged-man-intraining whose life may depend on the events of the night to come. Certainly the funniest and grimiest film since The Hangover. Director Steve Pink scripted High Fidelity; Cusack and Corddry do things here that you will still be laughing about 10 years from now, like Cusack’s monologue about the day life went wrong for him, a tale as funny as the story in Gremlins about the Santa who ruined Christmas. It went on like this for a while. I was suspicious. It seemed to contain too many pop platitudes to have been uttered by the Dalai Lama. With Google’s help, I did some research and discovered that the passage was actually the handiwork of pastor Bob Moorehead, who resigned from his Seattle church under a cloud of allegations about misconduct. I urge you to make similar investigations of the ostensible truths you receive this week, Taurus. You may find discrepancies as major as the differences between the Dalai Lama and Bob Moorehead. 53;7<7 (May 21–June 20): A life-long dream of mine came true recently, and I didn’t even know it was a life-long dream until it happened. It struck unexpectedly on a Tuesday afternoon. My daughter called on the phone from her college dorm room, wanting to discuss an essay she’d been assigned for her History of Modern Art class. She really liked it, but there were some points she wanted to understand better, and she thought my input might help. The essay? The “Surrealistic Manifesto,â€? formulated in 1924 by the writer AndrĂŠ Breton. Years ago, it was a crucial document in my own development as a young poet. The opportunity to share its heady brew with the beloved child I used to push on a swing was startlingly blissful. I predict a similar event for you in the coming days, Gemini: the fruition of a life-long dream you didn’t even know you had.
