When did you immigrate to the United States and how old were you?

In '85 I was 18 years old

¿Cómo fue tu infancia y cuáles son algunos momentos mayores?

Pues yo era niña feliz Para no tener cosas No tuve mucho como niña, ¿no? No tuve juguetes, pero fui feliz.

How was your childhood and what are some major moments?

Well, I was a happy child I didn't have much as a child, right? I didn’t have toys, but I was happy.

¿Qué recuerdas del pueblo o ciudad en la que vivías?

Recuerdo, por supuesto, la comida, la música, y mis amigos. La familia que todavía está allá. Recuerdo bastantes

What do you remember about the town or city you lived in?

I remember, of course, the food, the music, and my friends My family that is still there I remember quite a lot.

What did you do for fun while growing up?

Well, in those times, one could go out and play outside with their friends. And I have always danced I liked it, but I was always one to be outside with friends playing

¿Cuáles son tus mejores memorias de tu juventud?

Pues, yo tuve juventud ¿cómo te diré? Yo era feliz, pero siempre tuve muchas dificultades Al crecer en Colombia, mi familia, porque yo era el número once de catorce… Entonces, nos faltaron muchas cosas, ¿verdad? Y fue muy difícil, ¿verdad? Porque mi papá murió cuando yo tenía siete años y mi mamá tuvo que levantar a todos, por cierto Pero, como te digo, como no iba a la escuela tenía que hacer lo que tenía que hacer. Esos momentos creo que yo era más… cuando yo llegue a la escuela yo era como la payasa del salón Yo arremedaba los profesores Creo que era como mecanismo de defensa por no tener muchas cosas, y yo creo que eso me sentía bien Me acuerdo que me gustaba ir a la escuela, y creo que los momentos de mi juventud eran esos momentos de la escuela

What are your best memories of your youth?

Well, how can I say this? I was happy, but I always had many hardships Growing up in Colombia, my family, because I was number eleven out of fourteen, we lacked many things, right? And it was very difficult. My dad died when I was seven years old, and my mom had to raise us all, of course But, as I told you, since I didn’t go to school, I had to do what I had to do When I went to school I was the class clown I mocked the teachers. I think it was a defense mechanism for not having much stuff, and I think that it made me feel better I remember that I liked going to school, and I think the significant moments of my youth were those at school

What are some important moments from your adulthood?

The most important, I think, was when I had my daughters.

¿Cómo entiendes el mundo de manera diferente debido a lo que experimentaste al crecer?

Pues, como les dije antes, como yo crecí con tantas dificultades con no mucho. Me ha hecho ser humilde y dar gracias por lo que yo puedo tener ahorita Lo que me ha podido dar el mundo, ¿verdad? Y cuando digo “el mundo” el mundo en que vivo ahora en Oklahoma Me encanta y tengo la pasión de mostrar por medio de la danza mi cultura. Y no solo de Colombia sino de otras. Y eso, por supuesto que me llena a mí

How do you understand the world differently because of what you experienced growing up?

Well, as I told you before, I grew up with many difficulties and did not have much. It has made me humble and thankful for what I have right now, for what the world has been able to give me And when I say “the world,” I mean Oklahoma I love it here, and I have the passion to show, through dance, my culture… and not only from Colombia but from other places And that fulfills me

¿Qué te hizo quedarte en Oklahoma?

Pues, me acostumbré a todo lo de Oklahoma. Porque cuando.. creo que… mi historia es de dos partes. Cómo vine acá, eso es una historia La historia de muchos inmigrantes que nos pasa, verdad? Buscando el sueño Americano entonces uno tiene que inmigrar, ¿verdad? Y Se me dio que fue en Oklahoma

Entonces, aquí fue que empecé todo, verdad? Se me hizo fácil quedarme en Oklahoma. What made you stay in Oklahoma?

Well, I got used to everything about Oklahoma My story has two parts When I came here, that’s one part It’s the history of many immigrants You have to immigrate because your looking for the American Dream. And I was given that in Oklahoma. So, here was where I started everything It made it easy for me to stay in Oklahoma

What was the biggest hardship you faced when you arrived in Oklahoma?

The language because... of course... communication. I didn't know how to drive either.

¿Cómo fue ser una inmigrante en un país extranjero?

Difícil Yo creo que nosotros los inmigrantes Bueno yo quisiera, si yo hiciera lo que hago aquí me quedaría en Colombia Si yo pudiera hacer, lo que hago aquí en Colombia Por supuesto que me quedo en Colombia It’s funny, como, porque a veces por ejemplo uno ve Colombia tan hello Ooh Aah! Porqué se viene la gente? Porque es diferente cuando tú estás allá, es difícil mantenerse. Entiendes, el trabajo no es no mismo, no es fácil Una persona como yo, es difícil encontrar trabajo allá La cultura es bello y todo pero es diferentísimo Acá, tú tienes más oportunidades de hacer algo, de trabajar Yo sé qué hay gente de acá que se queja. Pero yo digo, “Uy, no! Ustedes lo tienen bien!” Porque si ustedes estuvieran en mi país ¿Por qué creen que yo estoy acá? ¿Entienden? Uno tiene que estar allá para entender

What was it like to be an immigrant in a foreign country? Difficult If I could do what I do here, I would stay in Colombia Of course, I’d stay in Colombia It’s funny because sometimes, for example, people see pictures of Colombia, and they’re like “Oh, WOW! Why do people leave?” Because it's different when you're there, it's hard to stay. You must understand, work is not the same there; it is not easy. For a person like me, it’s hard to find work there The culture is beautiful and everything, but it is very different Here, you have more opportunities to do things, to work I know there are people here who complain, but I say, “Oh, no! You have it good!” Because if you were in my country… Why do you think I am here? Do you understand? One has to be there to understand

¿Cuál fue la circunstancia concreta que te trajo a Estados Unidos?

Si, precisamente por esa misma razón que vivimos Por la pobreza, económicamente porque nosotros como te digo, siendo numero 11 de 14 hijos. No teníamos a veces mi para comer. Fíjate tu aun te digo que yo fui feliz, pero, a veces estando en la ‘high school’ yo iba a la escuela y llegaba a la casa y no había que comer Mi estómago ‘making noises ’ Porque tenía hambre y todo eso yo estaba y por supuesto ya cuando salí de la escuela yo dije ‘no quiero estar aquí más.’ Aplique hice un examen para ir a la universidad, a ver si me daban beca pero es difícil Estudiar allí es difícil Entonces, yo gané el examen pero no había cómo pagar ir a la universidad Entonces, yo personalmente la parte económica y siempre el sueño americano depende de lo que quieres tu A mi siempre me gustaba la danza En Colombia la danza… también uno tiene que pagar nunca tuve esa oportunidad para ir al escuela de danza La parte económica para estar aquí y trabajar en lo que uno pudiera hacer

What was the concrete circumstance that brought you here?

Precisely because of what we lived through in the past. Because of poverty, because, as I said, I was number 11 of 14 children Sometimes we didn't have anything to eat I can still tell you that I was happy, but sometimes being in ‘high school,’ I went to school and came home and there was no food to eat. My stomach was ‘making noises’ because I was hungry and all that. So, when I finished school, I said ‘I don’t want to be here anymore ’ I applied to take an exam to go to college, to see if I could be given a scholarship, but it was difficult Studying there is difficult So, I took the exam, but there was no way to pay to go to college So, for me personally, the Financial issue, and also the notion of the American Dream I always liked dance In Colombia, dance costs money, so I never had the opportunity to go to dance school

¿Conocías a alguien cuando viniste aquí? No

Did you know anyone when you came here? No.

¿Encontraste una comunidad hispana con la que sentías que podías identificarte?

¿Cuando llegué? Cuando vine acá? Pues, gracias a dios, que pues en el ‘85... cuando yo vine a Oklahoma no había mucha comunidad hispana Pero, cuando estába en Colombia, yo conocí a la iglesias de los Mormones y ellos siempre dijeron, “Si usted va a alguna parte, a cualquier parte del mundo, usted llama a la iglesia y allí, le ayudan ” Entonces cuando yo vine acá, yo llamé a algien cuando había “Las Paginas Amarillas,” y encontré La Iglesia de los Santos de los Últimos Dias. Llamé a alguien una señora me contestó y lo dije que estaba acá sola Entonces, acudieron a mí pude hacer esa relación entonces me empezaron a llevar a la iglesia y todo así fue que conocí a gente hispana En ese entonces…éramos…uuy…diez. Pero no conocía… Yo no venía para Oklahoma. Yo iba para Houston. Pero con lo que me pasó en la venida vine a Oklahoma

Did you find a hispanic community that you felt you could relate to?

When I arrived? When I came here? Well in ‘85... when I came to Oklahoma, there was not much of a Hispanic community But, when I was in Colombia, I knew of the Mormon churches, and they always said, “If you go somewhere, anywhere in the world, you call the church and there, they will help you ” So, when I came here, I called someone, back when there were, “The Yellow Pages,” and I found the Church of Latter-Day Saints. When I called, some lady answered me, and I told her that I was here alone So, they came to my aid I was able to form that relationship, then they started taking me to church, and that was how I met Hispanic people. At that time… there were about ten of us. I hadn’t planned on coming to Oklahoma; I was going to Houston But with what happened to me along the way I came to Oklahoma

¿Qué es tu profesión?

Soy una estilista e instructora de danza

What is your occupation?

I am a stylist and a dance instructor

¿Qué te inspiró a continuar tu carrera de baile en Oklahoma y convertirte en maestra?

Pues, la verdad después de que tuve mis hijas y siempre lo he hecho que, por medio de la danza, pueden conocer mi cultura Entonces, así les puedo enseñar por medio de la danza de donde viene su mamá A ellas, no? Yo siempre, les he dicho a ellas (yo tengo 2 hijas, una 27, otro 18) a Cristina y Leyla Leyla ahora va a la OU y ella está en la academia de danza de la OU. Entonces, yo creo que eso me ha ayudado, para que ellas conozcan más de su mamá Y pues, me encanta y tengo la pasión no soy la mejor pero tengo la pasión para hacerlo y mostrar a Oklahoma Como dije allí, que nosotros tenemos algo que ofrecer.

What inspired you to continue your dancing career in Oklahoma and become a teacher?

Well, the truth is… after I had my daughters, I have always taught them about my culture through dance I can teach them, through dance, where their mom comes from I have always told Cristina and Leyla this (I have 2 daughters, one is 27, the other is 18) Leyla now goes to OU, and she is in the OU dance academy So, I think that dance has helped them learn more about their mom And well, I love it, and I have the passion for it I am not the best, but I have the passion to do it and show Oklahoma As I said, we have something to offer

¿Cuándo empezaste a bailar?

En Colombia uno desde niño lo tiene eso como que está en la sangre Entonces, uno lo que yo vi diferente (de acá) a Colombia (digamos una fiesta) right? Un cumpleaños. Acá con la familias, encuentran una niñera que las cuide En Colombia, they take the kids with you So that 's the difference Una la diferencias Entonces, yo estaba alrededor de la música, siempre de niña, entonces siempre me ha gustado bailar. Entonces yo creo que desde niña.. Ya cuando vine aquí en Oklahoma mis primeros años (por supuesto) que no bailaba porque estaba enfocada en trabajar en lo que pudiera hacer yo y la danza era como “A qué horas?” Tenía que trabajar Entonces, me encanta que mi trabajo es lo que amo y me pagan por bailar! Me encanta eso Pero desde niña yo he bailando

When did you begin dancing?

In Colombia, since childhood it’s been in my blood So, what I saw that was different than in Colombia let’s say a party, right? A birthday Here with the families, they find a babysitter to take care of the kids. In Colombia, the parents take the kids with them. So that’s the difference, one of the differences Therefore, I was always around music as a child, so I always liked to dance

When I came here to Oklahoma, my first years (of course), I did not dance because I was focused on working on what I could do and dancing was like “At what time of day?” I had to work. So, I love that my job is what I love to do, and I get paid to dance! I love that But since I was a child I have danced

¿Cuál es tu tipo de baile favorito?

Todos los bailes tienen su cosa, como decimos, su encanto Pero me gusta mucho la salsa Me encanta la salsa y por medio de la salsa he podido conocer mucha gente… muchas gentes especiales en mi vida. Uno de ellos es Kelly Forbes El es uno persona que yo quiero mucho Ha sido parte de mi vida, no? Y habla español creo que mejor yo El es de Tulsa, Oklahoma El se graduó de aquí Entonces, por medio de esa he conocido gente especial en mi vida. Los últimos tres, cuatro años me llaman del Botanical Gardens para ser la profesora de para hacer una noche de salsa en ‘The Gardens’ (el Jardín Botánico) y yo soy la instructora Y enfrente de mucha gente Entonces, me encante hacer eso porque yo veo 300-400 gente bailando y digo yo “Wow!” yo haciendo todo esto Nunca me lo imaginaba cuando yo vine en el ‘85, que yo iba hacer eso. Entonces, por medio de la danza he tenido mucha oportunidad de cosas que nunca creo que hubiera podido hacer Pero me gusta la danza folclórica también Me gusta el folklor colombiano, me gusta folklor latino americano Porque yo bailo de Puerto Rico, también bailo algo del Perú, de Venezuela. He enseñado cosas de El Salvador. Me encanta. No sé mucho pero me encanta. Me encanta que la gente represente su país por medio de la danza Pero me gustan todos Pero, yo creo que mi “OOh!” la [favorito] es salsa

What is your favorite type of dance?

All of the dances have their thing, as we say, their charm But I really like salsa I love salsa, and through salsa, I have been able to meet many people many special people in my life One of them is Kelly Forbes He is a person I love very much He has been part of my life, right? And he speaks Spanish, I think, better than me He is from Tulsa, Oklahoma He graduated from here (OCU) So through that, I have met special people in my life The last three or four years I have been called by the Botanical Gardens to create a salsa night at the gardens, and I am the instructor. And in front of so many people. I love to do it… because I see 300-400 people dancing, and I say “Wow!” I'm doing all of this I never imagined when I came in ‘85 that I was going to do that So, through dance I have had a lot of opportunities to do things I never believed I could have done. But I like folkloric dance too. I like Colombian folklore; I like Latin American folklore. I do dances from Puerto Rico, I also dance some things from Peru, from Venezuela I have taught things from El Salvador I loved it I don't know much, but I love it I love that people represent their country through dance. I like them all, but I think “ooh!” my [favorite] is salsa.

¿Cuánto tiempo has sido instructora de baile?

Yo creo que quince anos Desde que tengo “Clips and Hips,” es el salon que tengo How long have you been a dance instructor?

I think fifteen years Since I've had "Clips and Hips," the salon that I own

Cómo ha influido OK en tu carrera profesional?

Precisamente lo que estaba hablando yo que estoy agradecida que OKC Ha podido darse cuenta por fin que estamos acá y que pueden abrazar esa parte de nosotros. En dos mil once, creo, estaban celebrando el mes de la hispanidad en la Corte Federal Entonces, me llamaron a mí Para yo bailar algo y fui enfrente de los jueces y abogados porque apenas era para ellos Estaba hablando con alguien, ‘and telling them about “Clips and Hips, my American dream!”’ Yo siempre llamado ‘my American dream.’ A los 3 dias, me llama alguien Me preguntaron si yo quería ser la juradora para las personas que se hacen ciudadanos Porque yo “quien soy yo para ?” Yo dije “si” pero dije “OMG ” Porque es un evento muy especial Es una cosa muy especial para los inmigrantes Y hay mucha gente de diferentes países del mundo. Una de las cosas (como inmigrantes) cuando tú te haces ciudadano. “Wow!” Es una cosa importantísima Entiendes? Entonces, en OKC, me conocieron por medio del baile y me preguntaron a mi que hiciera eso Me eso me lleno mucho a mi Me dio un poco de pena o vergüenza por mi acento, ahorque yo tenía que hablar enfrente de mucha gente. Y a Kelly Forbes, yo le dije todo eso, con mis palabras y él me lo tradujo Y entonces, yo lo estudie en ingles y español Yo lo decia todo en espanol; mi hermana me ayudo Y Kelly me lo tradujo Asi pude hacerlo Y you le dije a la jueza si ella lo podia leer un poco, para que no se me olividara. Entonces, me dijo que si. Y yo lo hice… Con acento y todo, lo hice. Eso me gusto mucho, verdad?

Y tambien, otro evento especial que Oklahoma nos ha acogido (y me gusta eso) es que nuestro grupo bailo en la mitad de tiempo del juego de basquetbol de “Los Thunder” Nosotros bailamos en la mitad del tiempo Nunca en mi vida hubiera pensado que yo bailara en “Halftime NBA ” Nunca! And then got paid!

Entonces, todos esos momentos y muchas mas. Han habido muchos. Me siento muy orgullosa de poder hacer lo que yo hago Y ahorita (imaginense!) una entrevista aca, en OCU Tal vez, para ustedes es otra entrevista, pero para mi es mucho Estaba con una de mis hijas y dije “me van a entrevistar en la OCU!” Y le dije a Kellito también y dice a “Chevere!” Todos estos momentos son gratos para mi. Gracias!

How has living in Oklahoma affected your career?

Precisely as I was saying, I am grateful for OKC The city was able to realize, finally, that we are here and can embrace that us. In 2011, I think, they were celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in the Federal Court So, they called me to dance something, and I went in front of the judges and lawyers because it was mainly for them I was talking to someone, ‘and telling them about “Clips and Hips, my American dream!” I always call it my American Dream ’ 3 days later, someone calls me. They asked me if I wanted to be the juror for people who become citizens. I was like, “Who am I ?” I said “Yes,” but I said “Oh My God ” Because it is a very special event It is a very special thing for immigrants, and there are many people from different countries around the world It is a big thing (as immigrants) when you become a citizen. “Wow!” It is a very important thing. Do you understand? In OKC, they met me through my dancing and asked me to do it That gave me great satisfaction It made me a little bit embarrassed of my accent, as I had to speak in front of many people. I told Kelly Forbes what I wanted to say, and he translated the words for me. Then, I studied the words in English and Spanish I said it all in Spanish; my sister helped me And Kelly translated it for me That's how I was able to do it And I asked the judge if I could read it a little, so that I would not forget anything, and they said yes And I did it with my accent and everything, I did it. I liked it a lot.

Also, another special event in which Oklahoma has hosted us (and I liked it) was when our group danced during the Halftime of a “Thunder” basketball game. We dance in Halftime. Never in my life would I have thought that I would dance in “Halftime NBA ” Never! “And then got paid!”

So, there are all of those moments and many more. There have been many. I feel very proud to

be able to do what I do And now (imagine!) an interview here at OCU Maybe for you, it’s another interview, but for me, it’s a big thing I was with one of my daughters and I said, “They’re going to interview me at the OCU!” And I told Kellito too, and he said, “Cheers!” All of these moments are gratifying Thank you!
