“Solito” is a memoir by Javier Zamora about his dangerous journey from El Salvador to the United States when he was nine years old. Through the eyes of a child, Zamora shares the fear, hope, and challenges he experienced while traveling to reunite with his parents. This book is especially meaningful during Hispanic Heritage Month because it celebrates the strength, resilience, and experiences of many Hispanic families. Zamora’s story helps readers better understand the sacrifices immigrants make and the importance of family, culture, and hope. I enjoyed this book because it is emotional, honest, and easy to connect with. Zamora’s writing helps readers understand the human side of immigration and the importance of family, courage, and hope. Overall, “Solito” is a moving and inspiring memoir that I would recommend to anyone looking for a meaningful true story. As they travel Route 66 on foot to escape the atrocities, they land at the Threatt family filling station in Luther, a place known to be safe for blacks in Oklahoma. The Threatt family takes them in, nurtures them, and gives them the strength they need to move forward. The reader gets a glimpse into the physical and psychological struggles faced by these two strong Black women. Through resilience and faith, the sisters overcome many challenges endured in the five years following the destruction of Greenwood. This work will draw you in quickly, and you will come away with your own strengthened resilience as you walk along with Margaret and Evelyn during their journeys. This is an absolute must read. She is raised to think for herself and writes dime novels before her role as a columnist for the “Daily Examiner.” Her sense of adventure and spirit leads her to cover the brewing civil war in Chile. This offers a look at the disparity of power in Chile and sheds a light on the hierarchy of skin color, last names and the various classes of mestizos, rotos and aristocracy.
