Security fears: Snapchat images have been stolen

by dominiC yeaTman The €8billion company denied its security was at fault and pinned the blame on third-party apps downloaded by users. A spokeswoman said: ‘We can confirm that Snapchat’s servers were never breached and were not the source of this leak. ‘Snapchatters were victimised by their use of third-party apps to send and receive Snaps, a practice that we expressly prohibit in our Terms of Use precisely because they compromise our users’ security. ‘We vigilantly monitor the App Store and Google Play for illegal third-party apps and have succeeded in getting many removed.’ The leak will pile pressure on Snapchat, which has come under intense scrutiny amid claims it is allowing an epidemic of underage sexting. Earlier this year a group of hackers published the phone numbers of 4.6million Snapchat users in the US, claiming they wanted to raise awareness of security issues.

Half may be pics from child accounts AT LEAST 200,000 Snapchat photos – some of children as young as 13 – have been stolen and posted online by hackers, along with some usernames. Many of the nude images appeared on the Internet message board 4chan, where stolen explicit images of Jennifer Lawrence were posted last month. The app allows users – at least half aged 13 to 17 – to send photos which are supposed to be automatically deleted within seconds. But it is feared hackers have been collecting images for years after accessing a Snapchat client app containing a 13GB library of messages which people thought had been wiped.

Roman Catholic gay rights groups around the world hailed it as a breakthrough, but church conservatives called it a betrayal of traditional family values. The document, prepared after an assembly of bishops, said the

church should challenge itself to find ‘a fraternal space’ for homosexuals without compromising its doctrine on family. While the text did not signal any change in the church’s condemnation of homosexual acts or gay marriage, it used less judgmental and more compassionate language than that seen prior to the 2013 election of Pope Francis. ‘Homosexuals have gifts and qualities to offer the Christian community: are we capable of welcoming these people, guaranteeing to them a further space in

our communities?’ asked the document. ‘Are our communities capable of accepting and valuing their sexual orientation without compromising Catholic doctrine on the family and matrimony?’ it asked. The Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (Glen) here welcomed the document, saying: ‘We hope that the Vatican and the Irish Catholic Church will take the opportunity to support current proposals by the Irish Government to bring legal certainty and security to these families.’
