executed by ‘the Beatles’
THE killer referred to as ‘John’ in the grueseome beheading video of US journalist James Foley could be the ringleader of a trio of British-born extremists known as ‘the Beatles’. A former hostage, who was held for a year in the city of Raqqa by the Islamic State (IS), told a newspaper he and ten other kidnap victims were guarded by the gang and they nicknamed them ‘the Beatles’ because of their clear British accents. Masked knifeman ‘John’ is said to have been the main rebel negotiator during talks earlier this year to release them. The hostages were eventually handed to Turkish officials after ran-

som demands were met. Prof Paul Kerswill, a linguistics expert at the University of York, told The Guardian he believed the man spoke in ‘multicultural London English’, an accent most commonly found in the East End, ‘a new kind of cockney’. The family of Mr Foley, 40, reportedly received an email from his captors last week outlining their intention to execute him. The email was ‘full of rage against the United States for the bombing’ said a spokesman for the family. ‘[We] explained to them that Jim was an innocent journalist, had done no harm to the Syrian people. Sadly they showed no mercy to Jim.’ Mainstream Muslims, including parents of suspected British jihadis, have vowed to work with police and security services to root out extremists. Mr Foley’s family has urged people not to watch or share the video of his death, with an online campaign to instead share pictures of him at work. #RespectJamesFoley. Supporter, actress Mia Farrow, tweeted: ‘Don’t share video. Give them nothing. #RespectJamesFoley.’
