Letter from the Publisher

Why corporate philanthropy and small business service to community matters

One of my favorite publications produced by Midlands Business Journal and ALH Publications is our annual Giving Guide. I started covering nonprofit events and news over 35 years ago, photographing thousands of charity events, reporting on millions of dollars being raised, and interviewing business leaders, entrepreneurs, owners, nonprofit executives and volunteers who truly do extraordinary work in the Omaha metro.

Corporate philanthropy and community engagement are significant and complementary aspects of responsible business practices that play crucial roles in shaping the social fabric and well-being of our society. While corporations and small businesses differ in size and resources, their commitment to community service reflects a shared dedication to positive impact. Here’s why it matters:

1. Strengthens community ties

Corporate and small business giving fosters strong relationships within the community. Small businesses often serve as the backbone of communities, and their active engagement creates a sense of belonging and solidarity. Larger corporations, with their broader reach, can amplify this impact by supporting multiple communities across regions.

2. Addresses local needs

Businesses participate in philanthropy to address the unique challenges and opportunities in their communities, tailoring their efforts accordingly. Whether sponsoring youth sports teams, donating to food banks, or providing scholarships, businesses play a vital role in meeting needs close to home.

3. Reflects responsibility and enhances reputation

Philanthropy and community service demonstrate that businesses are committed to more than just financial gains. These initiatives enhance a company’s reputation and standing in the eyes of consumers, employees and investors.

4. Promotes employee engagement and satisfaction

Companies of all sizes benefit from increased employee engagement when they actively participate in community service. Employees appreciate working for organizations that give back to society, and opportunities to volunteer or support charitable causes can be personally fulfilling.

5. Supports local economic growth

Small businesses are often integral to their communities’ financial growth, stimulating local economies and contributing to job creation and fiscal stability. Corporations can have broader economic impact by supporting initiatives that promote education, job training, and entrepreneurship in the communities where they operate.

6. Fosters collaboration and partnerships

Philanthropic efforts often lead to collaborations with local nonprofits and community organizations. These partnerships are mutually beneficial, helping businesses achieve their giving goals while assisting nonprofits in fulfilling their missions.

7. Sets an example

Businesses of all sizes serve as role models within their communities and industries. When they prioritize philanthropy and community service, they inspire others to follow suit, encouraging a culture of compassion, kindness and giving back.

In summary, corporate philanthropy and small business community service matter because they represent a commitment to making a positive impact beyond the bottom line. Regardless of size, businesses have the power to be forces of good in their communities, fostering a more prosperous and caring society.

We hope you enjoy our mid-year Giving Guide Express. Look for our 2026 Corporate Giving Guide to be published early next year!

Thank you for all that you do for our community!

Gratefully,

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT

Kids Can Community Center believes all children deserve impactful and educational experiences, regardless of their family’s socio-economic situation. At Kids Can, younger children will be better prepared to enter kindergarten, and elementary students will enjoy a wide-ranging and enriching experience via the STEMsmart Academy (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Strength, Music, Art, Reading, Tutoring).

Annually, programs benefit over 1,400 children across North and South Omaha via two core programs: Early Childhood Education and Out-of-School programs.

For children 6 weeks to 5 years old, the Early Childhood Education program prepares children to be ready and successful in school. Kids Can is proud to be one of only four Omaha centers with the highest rating awarded by the Department of Education in the Nebraska Step Up to Quality Program.

For children 5 to 13 years old, Out-of-School programs offer a variety of opportunities. The new center at 4768 Q Street offers programs including mentoring, before school, after school, full-day programs when school is closed, and an uninterrupted summer program. Kids Can also runs eight school-based sites at Mandela, Miller Park, Minne Lusa, Wakonda, Gilder, Benson West, Conestoga Magnet, and Druid Hill Elementary Schools, and a second summer program in Miller Park Pavilion.

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT

LLS is the largest not-for-profit health agency dedicated to finding cures and better treatments for people with blood cancer, funding cutting-edge research worldwide to advance breakthrough therapies and bring them to more patients faster. With the size and scope to fund research on a scale that makes progress happen, LLS funds more blood cancer research than any other organization. Advised by leading biomedical research and clinical experts, LLS identifies and funds the most promising blood cancer research found anywhere and has invested more than $1.8 billion in research to advance therapies and save lives. Unlike corporations that invest in drugs offering the best profit potential, LLS funds research based on unmet medical needs of blood cancer patients, without restriction by commercial return, market size or geography.

We must ensure that patients have access to the treatments they need. Through diverse and extensive outreach initiatives, we advocate, educate, assist, and support patients and fight for them at the national and state levels. With the help of trained volunteers, our

policy team influences crucial legislation to accelerate research and break down barriers to treatment. Each year, our Information Specialists, all master’s-level health care professionals, respond to more than 25,000 inquiries, and that number continues to grow.

Our Leadership:

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT

Make-A-Wish creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. We are on a quest to bring every eligible child’s wish to life, because a wish is an integral part of a child’s treatment journey. Research shows children who have wishes granted can build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight a critical illness. Wishes are the driving force behind all we do because, simply put, wish experiences transform lives. Not only do wishes impact our wish kids, but they also have far-reaching, positive impacts on wish families and local communities. There are few experiences more powerful than making a wish come true.

Make-A-Wish Nebraska serves the entire state of Nebraska with headquarters in Omaha and satellite offices in Lincoln and Kearney. Our goal is to reach every eligible child in Nebraska.

Thanks to the incredible support of the local community, Make-A-Wish Nebraska has granted more than 3,300 wishes across the state over the past 42 years. On average, we grant between 115 and 120 wishes per year.

Let a wish begin with you.

Since our inception, Make-A-Wish Nebraska has granted the wishes of more than 3,300 Nebraska children with critical illnesses each year. But our work is far from done. In the next 20 minutes, a child will learn that they have a critical illness. And 20 minutes later, another. As long as children face this devastating reality, they’ll need local supporters – or WishMakers – to help give them a piece of their childhood back.

When you help grant a wish, you restore hope for a child and improve their mental well-being. You empower them to reclaim their childhood, and experience transformative joy.

We need YOUR help to ensure every eligible child receives the power of a wish at a time they need it the most. Refer a child, donate, volunteer and help give local wish kids hope for tomorrow!

Our Leadership:

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT

At Omaha Home for Boys, we transform lives and strengthen communities. OHB’s mission is to support and strengthen youth, young adults and families through services that inspire and equip them to lead independent, productive lives. Individuals and families often come to OHB in a state of crisis, but with the life-changing programs and services offered at OHB, they are able to grow to become self-sufficient, productive individuals, making the community we all share a more thriving place to live, work and play.

Together with the community’s support, OHB first helps individuals and families meet their basic needs and stabilize so that they can begin to focus on achieving their long-term goals. Core programs at OHB are aimed at helping clients grow in a number of areas including housing, employment, education, basic life skills, mental and behavioral health, and transportation.

Vital community support allowed OHB to expand services in recent years and help even more people in need of housing support and mental health services. The doors opened to three new programs that filled a critical need in our community for affordable housing for young families and mental and behavioral health services in North Omaha. OHB remains committed to adapting to meet the everchanging needs of the community, just like it has for more than 100 years!

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT

Omaha Performing Arts (O-pa) is dedicated to creating a vibrant arts and entertainment experience in Omaha and the larger region. O-pa has grown to become the largest arts institution in Nebraska and consistently ranks among the top venues in the country and world. More than six million visitors have experienced world-class Broadway, jazz, dance, family and popular performances at the Holland Center and Orpheum Theater. O-pa’s latest venue, Steelhouse Omaha, opened in May 2023, attracting national performers who traditionally skipped over Omaha on their tours.

O-pa’s mission includes enriching the community through education and engagement initiatives. Each year, students and adults from across the region and state engage in a variety of programs, including student matinees, master classes, Disney Musicals in Schools, Musical Explorers, Omaha Wolf Trap, Nebraska Theater Academy, Voices AMPLIFIED!, Hip Hop Lab, Broadway Day Camp, and more.

The organization isn’t slowing down! O-pa’s Dick & Mary Holland Campus is expanding with the Tenaska Center for Arts Engagement, now nearing completion and opening in the spring of 2026. The new building will fill a need for additional rehearsal, workshop and classroom spaces to accommodate growing education and engagement activities.

Partnership 4 Kids (P4K) is a youth development nonprofit with more than 35 years of experience supporting Omaha students through every stage of their educational journey. We provide wraparound support from early literacy to career readiness so students from under-resourced communities can grow, thrive and lead.

P4K currently serves over 2,400 students, from prekindergarten through postsecondary education, at no cost to them or their families. Our goal is simple: to walk alongside students from the classroom to their career by combining mentoring, goal setting, academic support, post-secondary planning and career exploration

Through this comprehensive approach, we help students build essential life skills like self-advocacy, conflict resolution, and healthy decision-making: tools they need to succeed in school, in the workplace, and in life. With consistent support, our students gain something even more powerful: hope and trust in their future.

We engage. We enlighten. We encourage.

Engage through mentoring, evidence-based programs, and strong relationships

Enlighten through goal setting, academic and career exploration

Encourage through long-term guidance, scholarships, and postsecondary preparation

The Salvation Army

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT

The Salvation Army of Omaha is a faith-based nonprofit organization. Its three community centers — Omaha Citadel Corps, Omaha North Corps and the Omaha Kroc Center — as well as the Burrows Center and Renaissance Village, are uniquely situated to meet the diverse needs of our metro-area neighborhoods. The Salvation Army is often the last resort for thousands of the most vulnerable people in the metro area. The need is extremely high right now as the ongoing inflation crisis further stretches families’ budgets for basics such as food, clothing and gas. The organization sustains the bodies, minds and spirits of our most vulnerable neighbors through its core programs: food and material assistance, youth development, housing, behavioral health, older adult services, anti-human trafficking and emergency disaster services.

Giving Opportunities

• Online donations: When you give locally, you ensure your neighbors get the help they need.

• Red Kettle Campaign: Give to the red kettles at locations throughout the Omaha metro during November and December

• Planned gifts: Bequests, charitable gift annuities, and gifts of stocks, bonds, mutual funds or property are some of the legacy gifts that will impact lives for years to come.

Volunteer Opportunities

• Bell Ringing: Choose your preferred location and time by visiting registertoring.com.

• Winter Night Watch: Serve the hungry and homeless December through February.

• Back-to-School Backpack Program: Help organize and sort school supplies, and stuff backpacks.

• Food pantry: Sort food items, stock shelves or assist clients with shopping.

• Disaster Services: Help respond to local disasters by distributing food and supplies, aiding clean-up efforts and more.

Wish List

• Monetary donations — give online at salarmyomaha.org

• Corporate partnerships

• Nonperishable foods and bottled water

• New backpacks and school supplies

• New summer fans

WOMEN SERVED BY SANTA MONICA SINCE 1972

89% OF WOMEN REMAIN CLEAN AND SOBER THROUGHOUT OUR TWO-YEAR PROGRAM 75% OF WOMEN OBTAIN AND MAINTAIN GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT DURING THEIR TREATMENT AT SANTA MONICA

Santa Monica, Inc.

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT

Santa Monica provides a full continuum of care that partners with women on their journey to recovery. Our model thoughtfully steps women down through four levels of care that decrease in intensity and increase in independence. Women under the Santa Monica umbrella of care can be with us for up to two years as they gain stabilization mentally, emotionally, socially and physically. Our programs utilize evidence base curriculum combined with strength-based therapeutic approaches. Studies show that the longer women remain in a structured and accountable setting, they have an exponentially increased chance for long-term sobriety. We provide a home-like setting that allows for a gradual reunification with loved ones, creation of a new sober foundation of support, and practice implementing life skills on a daily basis. These are all integral pieces of the journey to recovery. At Santa Monica we embrace a holistic experience, so we are treating all areas of the women’s lives, not just the substance misuse, mental health and trauma. A dedicated, professional and passionate team of staff see their work with the women as an opportunity, not a job. The ripple effect of impact carries from Santa Monica to the farthest reaches of our community.

This work touches the lives of people who do not realize it, to those who live it and to those without reprieve.

Giving Opportunities

Giving opportunities with Santa Monica can meet every type of donor. While monetary donations are always welcome, we are consistently in need of all hygiene products, linens such as new or gently used towels and bedding; household items to furnish one of our supported transitional living apartments; clothing, shoes and undergarments for all sizes; and seasonal needs like winter and summer wear.

Volunteer Opportunities

• Preparation of a fully furnished apartment; cleaning, staging

• Yard work including weeding and spring planting

Wish List

Our Leadership:

Scouting America, Mid-America Council

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT

For more than 115 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citizenship skills that will influence their adult lives.

Scouting America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to:

• Try new things

• Provide service to others

• Build self-confidence

• Reinforce ethical standards

While various activities and youth groups teach basic skills and promote teamwork, Scouting goes beyond that and encourages youth to achieve a deeper appreciation for service to others in their community.

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals. It is communicated to them that those in the Scouting family care about what happens to them, regardless of whether a game is won or lost.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Scouting promotes activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.

Board of Directors:

Giving Opportunities Your charitable donation is more than a gift to the Scouts—it’s an investment in the success of your community. Scouts in the MidAmerica Council rely on the generosity of charitable individuals, corporations, and foundations to help them grow into the next generation of leaders. Giving opportunities include:

• Financial assistance and scholarship funds

• Annual gifts

• Event sponsorships

• Major gifts

• Endowment and planned giving

• Memorials and tributes

Volunteer Opportunities Scouting is a youth-led, youth-run program, but the youth must be trained to be leaders. The average Scout volunteer gives 20 hours of service each month, and 96 percent of volunteers say they would recommend volunteering for the Scouting America to other adults. Opportunities include:

• Scout leader

• Event and service project coordinator

• Merit badge counselor

• Administrative support

• Fundraising

• Board members

Wish List: fishing poles, 10 ATV helmets/ goggles, climbing helmets, harnesses, rope, EQ Helmets, lake inflatable pieces, 18 SUPs and paddles, 8 disc golf baskets, 6 rowboats and oars, accessible pool lift

Our rebranding to ScoutingAmericais not just a new name, but a renewed commitment to fostering the development of young people across our nation…[to] ensure that Scouting remains a vital and impactful force in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

Stephen Center’s goal is to increase housing stability for Pettigrew Emergency Shelter and Permanent Supportive Housing clients with a focus on supportive services, case management, therapeutic and crisis intervention services to address critical mental health, addiction and housing issues of clients. United Way of the Midlands

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT

At United Way of the Midlands (UWM), we understand there is great need across the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro, and an enduring urgency to come together. So, we continue to welcome all voices as a neutral bridge between government, nonprofits and businesses — committed to strengthening local support and exploring collaborative solutions.

Unity is embedded in our name, but to us, it is much more than a word. It is a call to action. That’s why we don’t just talk about coming together — we put it into practice every day — creating a broad circle of supports and a safety net of essential services. Through our community investment process, we address challenges, fill gaps through direct services like 211 and JAG Nebraska, and strengthen systems people rely on.

As we continue to look ahead, UWM will keep showing up for our metro — through crisis and recovery, through challenges and opportunities. We will actively listen, swiftly respond and transform care for community into results that make a difference — right here where we live and work.
