MATTHEW SCHOFIELD THERE, THERE

There, There is a contemplation of the act of revisiting, of seeing familiar spaces anew through the quiet lens of care and attention. Often this “re-looking” at places in Schofield’s life was brought on by small, inconspicuous changes or inspired by the humour in a place not being used for its intended purpose: a pair of tires and a traffic cone placed obscurely on a basketball court or Niagara Falls enrobed in winter ice and snow, devoid of its summer time visitors.

Schofield captures these curious moments on his phone in passing. Later, in his studio on the edge of Trinity Bellwoods, he transforms these moments into paintings by carefully selecting a scale that allows him to enhance key details in his chosen subject matter. For this new body of work Schofield began experimenting with expanding the scale of his works, highlighting his remarkable ability to make his paintings appear as though lit from within.
