Dr Colin Davidson Rev Dr Harold Good OBE You Can’t Stop the Beat (from Hairspray) by Marc Shaiman, arr. Ted Ricketts
All pupils and guests are asked to remain in their places at the end of the ceremony until the academic procession has left the hall. All guests are then invited to join us for refreshments in the College.
SCHOOL SONG LATIN WORDS BY PROFESSOR RM HENRY MA DLITT MUSIC BY FH SAWYER MUSBAC FRCO MA (Solo) Omnes condiscipulos confidenter oro, celebrant Collegium carmine canoro; optimum pulcherrimum ludum qui habemus, hilari, laetissimo cantu celebremus
(Solo) Confidently now I beg scholars here before us, celebrate our College with tuneful praise and chorus; best and fairest MCB honours still await thee: now with joyful mirth and song let us celebrate thee
(Omnes) Situs in monticulo callide delectus, omnibus rivalibus invide conspectus, omnibus fautoribus solitus amari, prohibet scientiae lumen occultari
(All) Pile of beauty, fitly placed on a site commanding, thou, on whom thy rivals gaze envious of thy standing, whom thy sons regard with love, fealty and affiance, thou dost radiate afar culture, art and science
(Omnes) Floreat Ultonia; floreant Hiberni; floreat Collegium nominis aeterni Dumque cum laboribus vitae concertamus, semper in memoria ludum habeamus.
(All) Let our Ulster flourish well, all the Irish flourish; flourish our most famous school which the arts doth nourish While we fight together the toils of life that claim us, let us ever keep in mind Methody the famous. 3

DR COLIN DAVIDSON Colin Davidson is a contemporary artist, living and working near Belfast. He is a former pupil of Methodist College Belfast and graduated in 1991 from the University of Ulster with a first-class honours degree. Since then he has structured his practice around a series of themes, and since 2010 has focused on painting grand-scale portraits, which have won widespread recognition and many international awards. As well as numerous commissions, Davidson’s portrait sitters have included Brad Pitt, Ed Sheeran, Liam Neeson, Brian Friel, Sir Kenneth Branagh, Christy Moore, Edna O’Brien, Gary Lightbody, Anthony Boyle, Mark Knopfler and Seamus Heaney. His work is held in many public and corporate collections worldwide, including Queen’s University Belfast, the Ulster Museum, the National Gallery of Ireland, the Standard Chartered Bank of Asia, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery London. Davidson’s exhibition of portrait paintings, entitled ‘Silent Testimony’, reveals the stories of eighteen people connected by their individual experiences of loss through the 58 Troubles in Northern Ireland. This
critically acclaimed body of work was shown at the Ulster Museum Belfast in 2015, before touring to the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris, Dublin Castle, the United Nations NYC and the National Portrait Gallery in London. In 2015 he was commissioned by TIME Magazine to paint German Chancellor Angela Merkel for the cover of its ‘Person of the Year’ issue. In 2016 Davidson was invited to paint an official portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II. In 2019 his official portrait of President Bill Clinton was unveiled in New York. Colin was installed as the 6th Chancellor of Ulster University at St Anne’s Cathedral in 2022, a fitting honour for an expectational artist who will inspire generations to come.
THE REV DR HAROLD GOOD OBE Harold Good was born in the city of Derry/Londonderry but grew up in Belfast where he attended Methodist College Belfast, with which his family has had a long association. Many years earlier, his father was a student in what was known as the Theological Department of Methodist College. Harold, his brothers and his five children all attended Methody. Later in life, he returned to serve as a Governor, a role he fulfilled with distinction for twenty years. Following ordination, Harold studied in the USA, served congregations across Ireland and was Director of the Corrymeela Centre in Ballycastle. In 2001, he was elected President of the Methodist Church in Ireland. From the early years of our troubled past, Harold has been one of those actively involved in the search for an end to violence and for reconciliation. While much of this was unseen, he came to public attention when, with Fr Alec Reid, he was asked to be an independent witness to the decommissioning of IRA weapons, and later to witness the decommissioning of weapons belonging to the Basque separatist group that had waged a long and violent campaign in
northern Spain, a significant step on the journey towards peace. In recognition of his pastoral ministry and his contribution to the wider community, Harold has been the recipient of several awards including an OBE, honorary doctorates and the World Methodist Peace Prize. But for him, none is greater than this second invitation to be a guest on Prize Day! Of even greater importance to Harold has been his marriage to Clodagh, who sadly recently passed away, along with his five children, twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. 59
