Long Island’s First Oyster Jamboree
By Aiden Lorenzo
If you live in a seaside town or work in the seafood industry, you know that the oyster industry is crucial to not only the environment, but also the economy. Long Island, and especially Suffolk County, most definitely knows that, as this past Saturday, Suffolk County held the first ever Long Island Oyster Jamboree at Smith Point in Shirley. The event kicked off with a ceremonial oyster shuck at 1:00p.m. and the event continued with many different festivities including live music and contests, as well as fresh oysters from exclusively local vendors on Long Island. Of course, the oyster industry has had significant growth over the years. “The oyster industry continues to grow every year and in the last ten years, it’s grown over 400%... they’ve harvested over 9.5 million oysters in 2024 alone,” said Suffolk County Legislator Jim Mazzarella (R-Moriches).

Zeldin Encourages Local Control for BESS Facilities
Continued on page 4
By Matt Meduri As New York continues to grapple with energy concerns, an alternative is on the horizon: Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities. BESS facilities use batteries, typically lithium-ion, to store energy for later use. The aim of these facilities is to help stabilize the grid and provide a consistent power supply during periods of renewable energy fluctuations, reduce demand during peak usage hours, and provide backup energy during outages. Batteries are charged during periods of excess electricity generation and discharged when the grid needs the extra power.
