Proposed Islamic Center in Bay Shore Sparks Debate By Matt Meduri Montfort Missionaries was founded in 1926. It’s called 26 South Saxon Avenue in Bay Shore its home for years. Although the Catholic seminary closed in 1972, the structure still served as a retreat and residence for Catholic priests. The United American Muslim Association, currently linked to the Suleymaniye Mosque in Dix Hills, agreed to buy the 13-14-acre, waterfront property for $5 million from Montfort Missionaries. The proposal includes an Islamic boarding school for about 120 male students in grades 7-12. It would combine secular academics with Islamic studies and students would live on campus.
