Elise Stefanik Jumps in 2026 By Matt Meduri

Gubernatorial Race By Matt Meduri After months of speculation, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R, NY-21) has formally declared her candidacy for Governor of New York in the 2026 midterm elections. The Schuylerville Republican began posturing for the seat in April. She was originally teed up to become President Donald Trump’s (R-FL) Ambassador to the United Nations. While her nomination was not nearly as controversial as some of his other selections, Stefanik was withdrawn from the process. Continued on page 4

Residents Speak on Closure of Holtsville Ecology Site By Matt Meduri At the November 6 evening board meeting to discuss the Town’s FY2026 budget, many public comments were dedicated to the beloved Holtsville Ecology Site, founded in 1979 by then-Brookhaven Superintendent of Highways Harold H. Malkmes - for whom the site is formally named. Malkmes was known as a florist who was urged into politics. He served as the Town’s Highway Superintendent from the 1970s until 2000. The site was constructed at the Town’s compost facility, and the ecology aspect came in when the Highway workers tended to barnyard animals to entertain children while their parents received their compost.
