Test Comments: This was the first plot planted in the region, and it experienced some challenges. The week after planting, 4.5" of rain fell which put a strain on the pre-emergence herbicide effectiveness. Parts of the plot encountered grass breakthrough, causing an impact on the early test. The region showed heavy rust - many farmers reported reduced standability and a loss of top-end yield. This plot stood well but showed signs of early dry down, especially in the ultra-early test. Test Comments: Multiple factors conspired at this plot to challenge stalk health. Wet early conditions, multiple windstorms in season, high rootworm pressure (as shown in soil tests), and strong winds before harvest led to higher lodging scores. Many plants that weren't lodged still had prominent goosenecking and signs of southern rust and tar spot, with smaller ear size. Test Comments: At the Plathe farm, there was no shortage of rain events. With a total of nearly 28 inches of precipitation throughout the growing season, it seemed as if there was a rain event nearly every week. Conditions were also favorable for southern rust to settle in. An aerial application of fungicide was applied to this trial. With uniform emergence, adequate moisture, and good weed control, good yields were observed. Stalk quality was still strong during harvest, and yields were consistent among hybrids. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Test Comments: This field started out with uniform emergence. Prior to pollination, plants were looking very strong and healthy. Adequate amounts of precipitation throughout the remainder of the season followed. With good plant health at pollination and other considerations, no fungicide was applied here. Much to the surprise of the area farmers, yields did not top out near 2024 levels, attributed to the onset of southern rust and other fungal pathogens. This was evident in the drier moisture content of the grain at harvest. Stalk quality remained acceptable, and standability ratings were negligible. The overall average yield of this plot matched the yield of the surrounding field. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Test Comments: Respectable yields were observed here in Paullina. In comparison to nearby Sioux Center, which had the same wind event sweep through, lodging was noticeable but less severe. Hybrids will respond differently depending on the stage of growth and the timing of the wind event. Fungicide was applied at this site, and the plants did have noticeable tar spot lesions. Test Comments: Good conditions at planting were followed by a number of challenges here. Consistent and heavy rains through the first portion of the year resulted in the nitrogen that was applied being leached away, and roots staying shallow. The back half of the season became dry, which stressed the plants with shallow roots before they were finally finished off by heavy southern rust pressure. Test Comments: Planted in dry conditions on May 10th, this plot showed great emergence after receiving some rain. Consistent precipitation throughout the season supported healthy, sturdy stalks with excellent root structure and no lodging. Rainfall tapered off by mid-September, leaving the site slightly below average in total accumulation. During harvest, a small amount of tar spot and minor tipback were observed. Test Comments: While this site traditionally is high-yielding, this year Mother Nature had her way with the outcome of this trial. A severe wind event at the end of July swept through, bringing winds over 90mph. At this site, there was noticeable damage to the corn in several of the hybrids with lodging, goosenecking, and green snap. Careful notes were taken for lodging scores, and some hybrids tended to yield higher in relation to the lodging score that was given. The grain was dry, and no fungicide was applied at this site. Test Comments: Central Iowa saw disease pressure this year, and our Waterloo plot was not spared. Tar spot and southern rust were noted in the plot. Following planting, heavy rains delayed the first herbicide pass, which resulted in this plot emerging into standing rye cover strips. After the rye was successfully terminated, the plot took off and saw timely rains and good heat. Thanks to Rottinghaus Farms for hosting this plot. Test Comments: This site was also another replant site due to mis-application of post emergent herbicide. Ultimately the yields were favorable and the plot was very consistent. A bit more lodging to note at this site. In late July a severe wind event swept across Northwest Iowa and at Clints farm, the weather station clocked in at 90 mph. Surprisingly the beans were not severely lodged and there were some differences among varieties. The surrounding field that was planted in April averaged 75 bu/acre while this plots average came in around 64 bu/acre. Test Comments: In the scenic Loess hills near Kinglsey Iowa, this bean site did not come without challenges. As with other sites in the region a misapplication of post-emergent herbicide terminated the initial planting of this trial. Arrangements were made to replant and this was accomplished in Mid June. A heavy population was planted to promote quick canopy closure. The yields of this trial are what one may expect in a replant scenario. Adequate precipitation and uniform emergence higlights the performance of this trial.

Test Comments: Early-season moisture has been the story for the northern portion of Iowa this season. Klemme saw 6.6" of rain above their historical average, with 12.3" more rain in June and July than normal. This plot made it through the early moisture and produced a uniform site. An accidental application of Enlist resulted in the termination of the XtendFlex entries at this plot. Due to this, the test will be excluded from the region summary. Test Comments: The Lu Verne site started off the season with good planting conditions, and rain came steadily after it was in the ground. These rains delayed the post-application of herbicide, which allowed some waterhemp to escape. A second spot spray of Enlist on the E3 varieties, coupled with manual weeding of the plot, got weed pressure back under control. A late-July application of fungicide was completed to control some leaf spot that came on as a result of the frequent rains. Test Comments: This plot came in almost exactly at the historical average. Good planting conditions were followed by steady moisture for the first half of the season. In the late season, it dried up. Weeds were effectively controlled with the pre-emerge app followed by two different post applications. No fungicide application was made. Test Comments: Variability at this site is high; therefore, this data should be used lightly when making decisions. This is the final site in the region that was replanted on June 13th due to herbicide misapplication. Following replanting, there were some heavier rain events. Some areas of this site had much lighter stands than others. The canopy closure was not as thick, and weed escapes occurred in the back end of the plot.
