MSJ 9.1: "1980s Redux"
A "1980s Redux" themed edition, Issue 9.1 is headlined by Andrew Hageman's reconsideration of David Lynch's Dune (1984) as A Masterpiece in Disarray. It further evokes the contours of the '80s with two in-depth reviews: a Sundar Prize Film Festival review spotlighting Gail Maurice's dramedy Rosie (2022) by Ian Frayne and a film review of Ava Maria Safai's horror short ZIP by Kelly Doyle. Both films rely on the '80s as a storytelling device. The issue's other highlights include a feature article on masculinities in "Hollywood's Portraits of the Artist as a Kept Man" by Joakim Nilsson; an interview with Monica Director Andrea Pallaoro by Paul Risker; and a film festival review of KDocsFF by Carolina Mesquita Rocha and Amy Tremblay.
In memoriam: Issue 9.1 is dedicated to Neil Patrick Kennedy, a KPU colleague who was larger-than-life, iconic, and beloved, much like 1980s cinema.
