car•pel \Çk‰rpÑl\ n : modified leaf forming part ofthe ovary ofa flower car•pen•ter \Çk‰rpÑntÑr\ n : one who builds with wood — carpenter vb car•pen•try \-trá\ n

car•pet \Çk‰rpÑt\ n : fabric floor covering vb : cover with a carpet — car•pet•ing \-iä\ n

The essence of the English language is the sentence. A sentence is a grammatically self-contained group of words that expresses a statement, a question, a command, a wish, or an exclamation. It is composed of a subject, about which something is said, and a predicate, which expresses what is said about the subject. The subject can be a single noun, a noun phrase, such as the strong wind, or a noun clause, such as what he decides is important to all of us. The predicate can be a single verb, a verb phrase, such as will be going, a verb and all its modifiers, such as will be going as soon as the bus arrives, or a verb and its complements, such as gave his client the bad news.

In English, word order is important. The subject usually comes first, but not necessarily:

An amusement park is across the river.

car•port n : open-sided automobile shelter

Across the river is an amusement park. Is an amusement park across the river

car•riage \Çkarij\ n 1: conveyance 2 : manner ofholding oneself 3 : wheeled vehicle

The grammar of English is concerned with the structure of these elements that make up a sentence. Every word in a sentence can be classified as a particular part of speech noun, verb, adjective, etc., according to its function in the sentence. The major parts of speech are briefly discussed in the following guide to basic English grammar.

car•ri•on \ÇkaráÑn\ n : dead and decaying flesh

car•rot \ÇkarÑt\ n : orange root vegetable

THE ADJECTIVE

The adjective gives information about a noun or pronoun, such as what kind the black cat a joyful occasion or which one a first draft that suggestion or how many ten players few new ideas

car•tel \k‰rÇtel\ n : business combination designed to limit competition

The positive degree is the basic form of the adjective. It gives basic information about the noun without reference to anything else a white house. The comparative degree relates a noun to anotheras having more or less of some quality this house is whiter than that the superlative degree relates the noun to all others of its class this is the whitest house in the neighborhood. When the adjective consists of a single syllable, the suffix -er is added to form the comparative degree, and the suffix -est is added to form the superlative degree. When the adjective consists of two syllables, the suffixes are often used to form the comparative as gentler and superlative as gentlest, but the adverbs moreless can also be used to form the comparative as more skillful and less skillful, and likewise,
