Merchistonians Take on Challenge for Charity

Hector Dunn (MCS 2016–2021) recently completed a remarkable 41day hike across Scotland to raise funds and awareness for the charity Papyrus The journey tested him physically and mentally, but knowing it could make a difference kept him going

Hector was joined at various stages by fellow Merchistonians Zach Thom (MCS 2019–2021), Thomas Camy (MCS 2014–2021), Adam Briggs (MCS 2016–2021), Matthew Baird (MCS 2011–2021), and his father Andrew Dunn (MCS 1983–1990)

A particular highlight was passing through Colinton Dell, bringing back fond memories of their time at Merchiston.

So far, the walk has raised over £3,000 for Papyrus. Hector hopes that sharing his journey will inspire others in the Merchistonian community to take on challenges for causes they care about.

You can follow Hector’s journey and support the cause via his JustGiving page or on Instagram.

Merchiston Links Celebrated in Scottish Rugby Hall of Fame

The latest Scottish Rugby Hall of Fame announcements brought welcome news for the Merchiston community, with two strong connections recognised during the centenary celebrations

Former Merchiston coach and former winger Rob Moffat was among the new inductees Rob worked at the school alongside, Roddy Deans in his early years as Assistant Director of Rugby, contributing to the coaching culture that has shaped so many young players His induction highlights the influence of those who have supported and developed rugby talent within our own environment.

Also honoured was former Scotland captain David Sole. Although David did not attend Merchiston himself, his family has close ties to the school. Both his sons, Chris and Tom, are Merchistonians and both represent Scotland in cricket.

Their achievements provide another proud link between the school and Scottish sport at national and international level.

Celebrating Merchistonian Achievements

Merchistonians continue to make their mark across a wide range of fields, from sport and the arts to academia and history. Among them, Peter B Gunn (MCS 1960–1965) stands out as a distinguished historian and author of eight books on aviation and military history

Peter has recently been elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and his research has brought new insight into notable historical figures, including Alastair Denniston, head of GCHQ from 1919 to 1945

His work is a reminder of the lasting impact Merchistonians have in shaping understanding and scholarship around the world.

We were very saddened to hear of the passing of the following Merchistonians:

An Evening Filled with Laughter, Memories and New Connections

The Merchistonian Club Dinner on 7 November lit up the Royal Scots Club with exactly what makes our community special Fifty members gathered for an evening that blended nostalgia, good humour and genuine warmth, creating a lively atmosphere from the moment the first guests arrived.

The drinks reception buzzed with conversation as year groups mixed freely. Old friendships quickly rekindled and new friendships formed just as easily One of the highlights was seeing a full table from the Class of 2022, bringing brilliant energy from some of our youngest vintage and reminding everyone that the Club continues to grow and thrive.

Dinner was thoroughly enjoyed, with plenty of time for stories to be shared across the tables. The raffle added a playful edge and there was no denying that Table 4 had remarkable luck! They left with an impressive haul of prizes and more than a few laughs from the rest of the room.

This dinner also carried a moment of significance It was the final Club event for Mr McDonald in his role as President. The room joined together to offer warm thanks for his leadership and the generosity of spirit he has brought to the Club throughout his service.

The evening was everything a Merchistonian gathering should be: friendly, relaxed and full of the kind of conversations that remind us why this community remains so strong. With plenty of photos captured throughout the night, we couldn’t resist sharing some snapshots with you all - see next page.
