Merchistonian Newsletter

March 2026
March has been a month of momentum for Merchiston, with a number of exciting developments both at the School and across our wider Merchistonian community
From recruitment events on campus to international visits, it has been wonderful to see Merchiston continuing to strengthen its global reach and connections. Whist we were incredibly disappointed to have to cancel our trip to Hong Kong due to the travel disruption in the Middle East, we look forward to re-scheduling this as soon as possible, so that we might re-arrange our alumni event.
There is also plenty to look forward to in the months ahead. We have a growing calendar of events, both in Edinburgh and further afield, offering more opportunities for Merchistonians to come together, reconnect, and share in the spirit of the School
In this edition, you will find a dedicated section highlighting what is coming up We very much hope to see many of you over the coming weeks and months
We are delighted to highlight the achievements of Merchistonian Andy Hadden (MCS 1993–2000), founder of Lost Shore Surf Resort, who has been named Director of the Year at the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Business Awards
Andy was recognised for his vision and determination in bringing Lost Shore to life, transforming an ambitious idea into Scotland’s first inland surf resort and Europe’s largest wave pool Located just outside Edinburgh, the £60 million development has quickly established itself as a world-class destination, attracting visitors from across the globe
Speaking after receiving the award, Andy described the recognition as a reflection of the team effort behind the project and its ambition to create something truly special in Scotland. His success is a fantastic example of entrepreneurial spirit and vision in action, and a proud moment for the Merchiston community.
We look forward to following your progress and cheering you on

Best of luck to the Merchistonian Golfing Team as they take on Repton in the First Round of the Halford Hewitt Cup (9–12 April 2026).

Merchistonian Chef Competes on Great British Menu
We are delighted to see Merchistonian Jun Au (MCS 2011-15) appearing in the latest series of Great British Menu, representing Scotland in one of the UK’s most prestigious culinary competitions.
Jun is the chef-patron of Pomelo (https://pomelocafe.co.uk/ ), a modern Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh which has quickly built a reputation as one of the city’s most exciting dining destinations. What began as a small neighbourhood noodle spot has grown into a highly regarded restaurant known for bold flavours and a confident approach to modern Chinese cooking, blending Asian techniques with high-quality Scottish produce
His journey into food is a personal one Having moved to Scotland at a young age, Jun has spoken about wanting to create the kind of food culture he felt was missing growing up, with strong influences from his family and heritage His work has already earned significant recognition, including being named Best Asian Chef in Scotland and receiving an Acorn Award for rising stars in hospitality.
Speaking about his appearance on the show, Jun described it as “one of the highlights of my career”, having grown up watching the programme and now representing Scotland himself.
We wish Jun every success in the competition and look forward to watching his journey unfold on screen.
The Class of 2016 will be holding their 10-Year Reunion on Saturday 20 June.
All those interested in attending but yet to notify the organisers should get in touch with Benn Morris (09-16) b.morris28411@gmail.com or Charles Soutar (10-16) charlessoutar@icloud com for further information.
Coffee Morning with artist Robbie Bushe
We recently emailed the database directly, but just in case you missed it: we are delighted to invite Merchistonians to a special Coffee Morning with our Artist in Residence, Robbie Bushe (OBE). Robbie is currently working on a series of narrative artworks that draw upon the rich heritage, memories, and lived experiences of the Merchiston community. His pieces thoughtfully weave together reflections from students and staff, capturing the spirit and character of the School.
This gathering is a unique opportunity for alumni to share personal memories of their school days and contribute to a meaningful artistic project that honours the collective story of Merchiston Your recollections will help shape Robbie’s work and ensure the voices of former pupils are represented
