2026 MERCER BEARS FOOTBALL GAMEDAY PROGRAM

THE BEAR ESSENTIALS CB CAMERON GOGGINS returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown to give 17th-ranked Mercer a 23-0 advantage heading into halftime, but visiting East Texas A&M nearly battled all the way back before succumbing to the Bears, 23-15, on August 29 at Five Star Stadium. u Sophomore transfer K SIMON ZEIDAN kicked a trio of field goals, including a school-record 55-yard boot in the first quarter, and converted on both of his point-after attempts to add 11 points to Mercer’s total. Zeidan also averaged 65.0 yards on six kickoffs, including five that resulted in touchbacks. u HC JOEL TAYLOR notched a win in his debut as Mercer’s head coach and moved to 2-0 in his programs’ head coaching debuts after also posting a victory in his first game as West Georgia’s head coach in 2024 (38-29 home win over Samford on Aug. 31, 2024). u The Bears limited the Lions to just 60 yards on 28 plays (2.1 yards/play) in the opening half and got interceptions from Goggins and CB JUSTIN FERGUSON, but East Texas A&M turned the table in the second half, out-gaining Mercer 303-104 to get back into the contest. u Mercer is now 55-22 (.714) all-time in Five Star Stadium after last week’s victory over East Texas A&M, including a 19-5 (.792) record against non-conference opponents. The Bears captured their first 12 non-conference games in Five Star Stadium from 2013-18. u The Bears have captured 21 of their last 25 home games heading into tonight’s matchup with Presbyterian, but had their school record 10-game win streak snapped with a 15-10 setback to the Blue Hose in last year’s season opener. u Presbyterian snapped a three-game losing streak in the series with last year’s win at Five Star Stadium, while also snapping the nation’s fourth-longest home win streak as well.

SCOUTING PRESBYTERIAN u Home-standing Presbyterian racked up 576 yards of total offense, including 295 in the second half alone, to fuel a 47-37 victory over visiting UVa.-Wise (NCAA II) on August 27 in Clinton, S.C. Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week QB LANDON SHARPE threw for 367 yards and three touchdowns on 30-of-43 passing, while also carrying the ball 18 times for 94 yards and an additional score, to pace the Blue Hose offensive attack. u The Blue & Garnet was able to nearly reach the 50-point plateau despite committing three turnovers, offsetting those miscues with 31 first downs and a 6.2 yards per play average. Presbyterian scored points on seven of its eight trips inside the red zone. u Freshman WR ANTON SMITH caught six passes for 105 yards in his collegiate debut, including a 57-yard reception in the second quarter that set up the go-ahead score for PC. The Blue Hose also got 92 all-purpose yards (55 receiving) and two touchdowns from RB JACKSON BURLESON. u The triumph over the Cavaliers marked the ninth-straight home win for Presbyterian - a streak that dates all the way back to the 2024 campaign for the Blue Hose. Presbyterian registered a perfect 6-0 record at home last season. u HC MATT RAHL notched a win in his head coaching debut as well. Rahl was named as PC’s 18th football head coach in December after serving as the offensive line coach for the Blue Hose for the previous two seasons. u Despite turning in, arguably, the greatest season in the 113 years of Presbyterian football last fall, the Blue Hose were picked to finish seventh in a preseason poll of the Pioneer Football League’s 11 head coaches that was released in late July. Points were awarded on an 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis and coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. u San Diego claimed the top spot in what the league’s coaches see as an extremely tight race for the league’s 34th championship, with only three points separating the Top 3 teams in the poll. Drake nestled in the runner-up position in the poll, while St. Thomas, Dayton, Butler and Marist also preceded Presbyterian. u Senior OL MARCELLO COLEMAN was the lone Presbyterian player selected to the Pioneer Football League Preseason All-Conference squad. Coleman started all 11 games for the Blue Hose last season on the way to picking up an honorable mention on the postseason All-PFL team. u Few teams can equal the influx of youth on Presbyterian’s roster this season as the Blue Hose rolled into last week’s season
