THE BEAR ESSENTIALS u QB JAYLEN KING threw for four touchdowns and ran for two others to lead a raucous first-half effort for 15th-ranked
Mercer as the Bears racked up 600 yards of total offense in a dominant 62-3 victory over visiting Presyterian last week at Five Star Stadium. Mercer scored touchdowns on nine of its 11 possessions on the night, including a 2-for-3 success rate inside the red zone. The Bears totaled 10 runs of 10 or more yards, while also tallying seven receptions of 15 or more yards. u King threw for 236 yards and four touchdowns on 12-of-15 passing in the first half, while also adding 48 rushing yards and two additional scores by the halftime break as well. He finished the night with a 300.2 passing efficiency rating which ranks as the second-best single-game mark in program history. u Mercer turned in 600 or more yards of total offense for just the seventh time in program history, but the second time in the last two seasons (829 vs. VMI in 2025). The Bears’ 329 rushing yards are the 10th-most in school history, but the ground performance was the best for the Orange & Black since totaling a school-record 539 rushing yards against Point in the 2021 season opener. u Freshman RB DEVON CALDWELL carried the ball 11 times for 152 yards, including a school-record 83-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He also had a 33-yard scamper in the third period. Senior WR BRAYDEN SMITH caught five passes for 132 yards, including a 51-yard scoring reception in the first quarter. u Tonight’s matchup will mark the 25th meeting all-time between the Bears and Furman in a series that dates all the way
back to the 1914 season. The Paladins lead the all-time series, 12-10-2, but the Orange & Black has captured four out of the last six meetings, including wins in each of the last two contests. u Mercer claimed four of the first five games in the series from 1914-25 before the Paladins strung together an 8-game (6-0-2) unbeaten skein in the series that lasted until 2014. The Bears are 6-5 against Furman since, including consecutive victories in 2020-21, and then again the last two years. u The Bears are 6-5 against Furman in Macon, including a 49-23 rout of the Paladins in the 2024 regular season finale for both teams at Five Star Stadium. Four out of the last six series matchups in Middle Georgia have been decided by 10 or fewer points.

SCOUTING TONIGHT’S OPPONENT u Southern Conference rival Furman rolls into Macon tonight sporting a 1-1 record. The Paladins opened the 2026 sea-
son with a 20-3 home win over NCAA Division II rival Anderson at Paladin Stadium, but suffered their first setback of the season with a 56-9 loss last week at NCAA FBS rival and 18th-ranked Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. u Furman’s defense recorded seven tackles for loss and held Anderson to just six rushing yards and 160 yards of total offense in the decisive victory on August 27 in Greenville, S.C. Conversely, the Paladin offense grinded out 268 yards on the ground and outgained the Trojans 451-160 to claim the first meeting between the schools. u Quarterback Faizon Brandon accounted for 294 yards of offense and five touchdowns to power Tennessee to a 56-9 victory over the Paladins before a crowd of 101,915 at Neyland Stadium last Saturday. The Vols posted 329 yards on the ground and passed for 309 yards to compile 638 yards of total offense. The Paladins gained 221 yards, including 178 on the ground. u A member of the Southern Conference for nearly a century (joined in 1936), Furman boasts an all-time record of
655-514-48 across 124-plus seasons of intercollegiate football. The Paladins, who did not field a team from 1897-99 and then again from 1903-12, boast 15 Southern Conference championships, as well as 20 NCAA FCS Playoff appearances. Furman was just two points shy of Chattanooga who finished in the No. 5 spot, while Wofford, Samford, The Citadel and VMI rounded out the top 10. u Eight Paladins were selected to the 2026 Preseason All-Southern Conference squad in July. Leading the way was senior DE JOSHUA STONEKING who was tabbed as the league’s preseason defensive player of the year. Stoneking was joined on the first team defense by LB RALEIGH HERBERT.
