From the Chairman – Spanner, DECember 2025 Our Annual General Meeting was on Saturday, the 29th of November 2025. More than a mere meeting, it is an occasion to celebrate our collective enthusiasm, reflect on the year’s motoring adventures, and look forward to the promising roads that lie ahead. Our Club's financial matters have been managed diligently by Mr. Willie van Zyl. Our new Treasurer. We thank Philip Kuschke and Naas van Zyl for their dedicated service to the club and especially to the committee. The following nominations were received and elected unopposed to the 2026 committee of the SCOCC: Chairman: Waldo Scribante Treasurer: Willie van Zyl Secretary: Rensche Kühn Events Chris Kühn Congratulation to the elected members and thank you to Pierre Malherbe and Japie van Rooyen, for continuing to serve our club. Following the AGM, we celebrated our Yearend with a delightful Skaapbraai at Die BENZ. This cherished tradition, where we share good food, fine company, and, of course, our beloved classics, perfectly embodies the spirit of our club – a family united by a shared passion for vintage vehicles. Thank for all the members that attended. Looking ahead, preparations are well underway for the 29th George Old Car Show, which is set for Saturday, the 13th of February 2026. This year’s event will pay homage to the Pioneers of Motoring, celebrating the 140th Anniversary of the BENZ Patent-Motorwagen as well as the 100th Anniversary of Daimler-Benz AG with a special exhibition featuring Benz’es and pre-WWII Mercedes-Benz cars. Unfortunately, we decided not to have the GOCS eSCape Tour & Rally, planning to have this later in the year. Philip’s Vettoer is also happening for the 20th time from the 12-13 February 2026, starting at Prins Albert. We are looking forward to another successful tour, sponsored by SCRIBS BENZeum. The tour will end with a special skaapbraai at “die BENZ” for Vettoer participants. As we embark upon yet another year filled with spirited drives, stimulating technical discussions, and unforgettable moments, I encourage you all to stay safe, keep those engines finely tuned, and embrace the exhilaration of the open road. Just a friendly reminder, we will again have the traditional NEW YEAR’S brunch braai at Peter Boshoff’s farm “Panorama” In Waboomskraal! Here’s to another splendid year of vintage car adventures! Chairman’s Report 2025 Annual General Meeting 29 November 2025 Protea Hotel King George, GEORGE Honorary Members, Committee Members, Members, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is my privilege to deliver the Chairman’s Report for the Southern Cape Old Car Club for 2025. As we reflect on the past year, we pause with respect and gratitude for the members we have lost. Their passion for classic motoring will always remain part of our club’s story. We think also of those who have faced illness or hardship, and we extend our support and friendship to them and their families. This year has been one of remarkable activity, teamwork and enthusiasm. The dedication of our members has ensured that the SCOCC continues to grow in stature and influence within the classic motoring community. 1. Committee First, I wish to express appreciation to our Patron, Mr. Kobus Harris, and to our President, Mr. Chris van Staden, for their continued leadership and loyal support of our Club. 2. Membership Membership in the SCOCC continues to be a privilege that attracts passionate motoring enthusiasts. Our current total stands at 188 members, made up of 171 paid renewals and 17 new members. Sadly, 39 members did not renew their membership for the term ending December 2025. We also respectfully acknowledge the loss of three members since our previous AGM. The committee has resolved that membership will now run according to the calendar year (January– December), while the Club’s financial year will remain July–June. 3. Events Our calendar once again offered a mix of tradition and excitement. We began the year with the much-loved New Year’s brunch in Waboomskraal at Pieter Boshoff’s farm, followed by another highly successful 28th George Old Car Show. Warm thanks go to Alewijn Dippenaar for his leadership and to every volunteer who contributed. Our tours continue to strengthen our culture of motoring fellowship. Special thanks go to Philip Kuschke for organising the Vettoer, and to Chris and Rensche Kühn for their commitment to the Erfenistoer. 4. Finances Our financial affairs have once again been diligently managed by Mr. Willie van Zyl. We look forward to his presentation of the Club’s financial statements shortly. 5. Clubhouse Our clubhouse at “die BENZ” remains a vibrant home for the SCOCC. It has played host to events such as Bonnets Up, Brood & Sop, and our much-enjoyed Potjiekos days. It is also the base for our monthly committee meetings and for the George Old Car Show organising team. My sincere appreciation goes to Marlize Herholdt for the exceptional way she manage the facility and its activities. 6. Spanner The first edition of our Spanner newsletter has been published. However, the workload associated with its production remains a challenge. At present, the second edition remains overdue, and a third edition must still be completed before year-end. I am meeting a person with In Design experience to help me designing the Spanner and hopefully the second edition will be available shortly.

7. SAVVA Thank you to Naas van Zyl for his excellent representation of our Club at SAVVA. We also congratulate Mr. Philip Kuschke on serving as Secretary of SAVVA—a proud achievement that reflects well on the SCOCC. 8. PERSVERKLARING 2026 George Oumotorskou bring hulde aan die Pioniers van die Motor Vier die 140ste herdenking van die wêreld se eerste motorvoertuig Vier die Eeufees van die stigting van Daimler-Benz AG Die 29ste George Oumotorskou, die grootste skou vir ou en veterane motors in die land, vind plaas op Saterdag 14 Februarie 2026 by Eden Tegniese Hoërskool in George. Die Suid-Kaap Oumotorklub, organiseerders van die skou, nooi hiermee alle veterane motorklubs en klassieke motor-eienaars hartlik uit om deel te neem aan hierdie jaarlikse viering van motorgeskiedenis, ingenieursvernuf en tydlose motor-skoonheid. Die 2026-uitgawe, wat op Valentynsdag plaasvind, sal nie net Suid-Afrika se liefde vir en waardering van ou en klassieke motors vertoon nie, maar ook hulde bring aan die Pioniers van die Motor – ter herdenking van die 140ste bestaansjaar van Carl Benz se uitvinding van die perdelose motorwa in 1886. Om hierdie historiese en wêreldveranderende gebeurtenis te gedenk, sal besoekers getrakteer word op ’n spesiale uitstalling van vroeë Benz-voertuie wat die moderne motorbaan help baan het. 12 November 2025 2026 GEORGE OLD CAR SHOW “VETERAN TOUR” Dear Veteran Enthusiast The 20th VETTOUR is planned to start from Prince Albert to George on Friday 13 February 2026. The tour is being arranged for the day before the 2026 George Old Car Show. These tours have been a great success over the past 19 years, and we are therefore excited to again arrange such an event for 2026. Thanks to everyone who in the past has made it possible for these VETTOURS to take place. It is a great honour for the Southern Cape Old Car Club to welcome these special cars from across the country, to the Southern Cape. Information regarding the 2026 George Old Car Show’s Veteran tour is as follows: DATE: 12 & 13 February 2026 TARGET GROUP PARTICIPANTS: All vehicles manufactured without front wheel brakes as well as motorcycles manufactured before 31 Desember 1936. ROUTE: The route covers an approximate distance of 170 km. We will depart from Prince Albert hrough the breathtakingly beautiful Meiringspoort, through De Rust back to George. ACCOMMODATION: We will be staying in Guest Houses in Prince Albert. We will be having dinner and breakfast at the Irish Bush Pub restaurant on Thursday evening and Friday morning. The cost is R1150.00 per person sharing and includes the following: Dinner and overnight facilities on Thursday 12 February 2026. Breakfast on Friday 13 February 2026. Afternoon tea and sandwiches at Deacon House in George. Spit braai on Friday evening at the clubhouse. Stuttgart. The new Mercedes-Benz GLC inspires with its powerful reinterpretation of the classic Mercedes radiator grille introduced in 1900. This iconic face of Mercedes-Benz automobiles traces its origins to the very first Mercedes, which was also the first modern automobile ever built – the Mercedes 35 hp. On 22 November 1900, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) in Cannstatt completes the first vehicle of this type. This highly innovative automobile is created at the request of Emil Jellinek, a DMG business partner and an enthusiastic motorist. The extremely well-connected entrepreneur is the company’s most important customer at that time. In 1900 alone, he orders a total of 72 new vehicles, which he sells to buyers from Europe’s upper classes. The Mercedes 35 hp is a high-performance vehicle of its time. It covers several segments, as is common at the time: as a sports version, it excels in races. Or, fitted with a prestigious body, it is suitable for comfortable journeys. Accordingly, customers use the Mercedes 35 hp both in races and in everyday life – and enjoy an impressive presence everywhere. Just 14 years after Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler independently invented the motorcar in 1886, the Mercedes 35 hp from 1900 was a revolutionary overall design. It set the standard for the future development of the modern motorcar. The story behind the Mercedes 35 hp: Jellinek demands from DMG chief engineer Wilhelm Maybach a modern, powerful and safe vehicle that would overcome the limitations of earlier automobiles with its innovative engineering. The request is triggered by the fatal accident of racing driver Wilhelm Bauer, who was driving a Daimler Phoenix 23 hp racing car, which was entered by Jellinek during the Nice–La Turbie hillclimb during the Nice Race Week in 1900. Jellinek’s racing car competes under the pseudonym “Mercédès”, the first name of his eldest daughter. Shortly afterwards, this name becomes the brand designation for DMG automobiles.
New vehicle concept for sustained high performance Maybach, the outstanding chief designer of DMG, and his team develop a completely newly designed vehicle. The Mercedes 35 hp is the first car to entirely break away from the concept of the motorised carriage: its low centre of gravity, long wheelbase and wide track provide for a level of driving safety and stability which has hitherto never been achieved. Additional innovations include an angled steering column and a gearbox with a foot-operated clutch – key improvements in terms of ergonomics, and features which remain fundamental in automotive engineering to this day. A key milestone is the new automobile’s drivetrain. The innovative design makes it possible to use a new high-performance engine. This four-cylinder engine, designed by Josef Brauner, delivers 25.7 kW (35 hp) with a displacement of 5.9 litres at 950 rpm – a spectacular figure for that time. Maybach’s invention of the honeycomb radiator enables highly efficient cooling and sustained high performance. The honeycomb structure at the front of the vehicle, initially a purely technical necessity, evolves into an iconic design element of the Mercedes brand from 1926 onwards. In the recently presented Mercedes-Benz GLC, this radiator motif constitutes a contemporary expression which points to the future of the automobile. Process of refinement The first Mercedes 35 hp undergoes several weeks of rigorous testing and meticulous fine-tuning. After this refinement stage, referred to as “running in”, the very first Mercedes in history is shipped to Emil Jellinek in Nice on 22 December 1900. With resounding success, the DMG business partner enters this new type of automobile in the Race Week in Nice, held from 25 to 29 March 1901. The Mercedes 35 hp dominates the competitions, claiming victory in the Nice–Salon–Nice race over 392 kilometres and the Nice–La Turbie hillclimb, among others. Following the Mercedes 35 hp of 1900, DMG launches its sister models, the Mercedes 12/16 hp and Mercedes 8/11 hp, in 1901. This first generation of Mercedes vehicles is succeeded in 1902 by the Mercedes-Simplex model range. The “Simplex” name is a reference to its operation, which is particularly simple for those times. Another strategically pivotal decision is also made in 1900: DMG purchases a 185,000-square-metre site in Untertürkheim – now the main Mercedes-Benz plant. Gottlieb Daimler does not live to see these key developments – he passes away on 6 March 1900 at the age of just 65. Yet the innovative strength of the company he founded remains unchanged and continues to drive Mercedes-Benz into the future.

Neither the rainy weather nor the nearly 100-kilometre-long route were able to rattle the Benz Spider: this more than 120 years old automobile, belonging to the company’s own vehicle collection, completed RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run with flying colours on Sunday, 2 November 2025 and reached the finish: the sea-bathing town on the English Channel coast. “RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is as likeable as it is historically significant. In a diverse field of participants, the Benz Spider from 1901 impressively demonstrated high-tech from a me when the automobile was just beginning its success story. Mercedes-Benz Classic presented the Benz Spider and additionally a Mercedes-Simplex 28/32 hp before the “Run” as part of the St. James’s Motoring Spectacle held in downtown London on Saturday, 1 November 2025. On Friday, 31 October 2025, the two gems were already available for content production work on the circuit of Mercedes-Benz World at nearby Brooklands. With this contingent in England and participation in the oldest automobile event which has remained unchanged, Mercedes-Benz Classic also gave an initial preview of the big anniversary “140 Years of the Automobile” coming in 2026. The patent application filed by Carl Benz for his motor car on 29 January 1886 is considered to be the birth certificate. “100 Years of Mercedes-Benz” is another important anniversary in 2026: Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) and Benz & Cie. merged in 1926 to form the then DaimlerBenz AG and founded the new Mercedes-Benz brand. RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run (LBVCR) dates back to the year 1896. At that time, with the “Emancipation Run”, automobilists applauded the increase in the maximum permissible speed for road vehicles outside built-up areas to 14 mph (22.5 km/h). The “Run” was celebrated as the final farewell to the “Locomotive Act”, also known as the “Red Flag Act”. This act originally stipulated that a person with a red flag had to walk in front of self-propelled road vehicles. In 1896, automobile inventor Gottlieb Daimler took part in the Emancipation Run as a guest of honor, in a Daimler Vis-à-Vis 3 hp belonging to his business partner and close friend Frederick R. Simms. In 1897, Simms and Charles Harrington-Moore founded the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland (ACGBI), the forerunner of today's Royal Automobile Club. The club played a key role in campaigning for the removal of further restrictions on motor traffic in Great Britain. Its events generated public enthusiasm for the new mode of transport, and from the outset the club was an important promoter of the automobile and its supporters. Simms acquired the rights to use Daimler's engine patents in Great Britain in 1890 and founded Daimler Motor Syndicate Limited in 1893. In addition to models from Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie., the starting field in 1896 included several cars from Panhard & Levassor with Daimler engines and at least one Arnold Motor Car derived from the Benz Velo under license. Today, RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is considered to be the world’s longest-running automobile event. Two-, three- and four-wheeled vehicles with various drive concepts built up to 1904 are eligible to participate. Since 2017, bicycles have also been permitted to be at the start. Traditionally, LBVCR takes place every year on the first Sunday in November. In London’s Hyde Park, in commemoration of 1896, a red flag is symbolically torn apart at sunrise before the field of participants of more than 300 vehicles sets off together bound for Brighton in a unique spectacle.
