SCAVA’s “Boundless Realm of Creativity”

Year - End Exhibition

SCAVA’s Year-End Exhibition, titled "Boundless Realm of Creativity," has commenced with a vibrant array of artworks on display. It run from the 13th of November 2023 until the 31st of January 2024, together with the “Object” Exhibition. The exhibition showcased the talents of 45 artists, including several newcomers who were exhibiting for the first time. This exhibition was a celebration of creativity, and the indomitable human spirit that drives us to create, innovate, and connect through art. It featured a total of 71 artworks, each a testament to the diverse and boundless creativity within SCAVA. From paintings and sculptures to mixed media, the collection was a captivating journey into the artistic minds.

The opening evening was filled with good food and laughter, and of course incredible art to look at.

All in all, this was a very successful exhibition and we thank the members for their participation and also for the way they did duty at the exhibition. It is commendable and we are very proud of our SCAVA members!

CAP Institute for Contemporary Art Practice

Professional Artist Workshop by Prof Elfriede Dreyer

On 17 January 2024 Prof. Elfriede Dreyer, founder of the CAP Institute for Contemporary Art Practice and Vice president of SANAVA, presented a one-day workshop in George. The in-depth workshop aimed at equipping artists with the professional skills necessary for marketing oneself. The numerous topics covered were setting up a studio space and finding the right working methodology as an artist, networking with galleries, marketing strategies and how to promote oneself as an artist, how to write an exhibition or project proposal, how to write an artist biography and artist statement, the various funding opportunities that are available to artists for art projects, and the best techniques to employ for exhibition design, curating, and installation. A powerhouse of experience and knowledge, Prof. Dreyer’s instruction was both dynamic and adept. Her workshop revived a sense of pride in oneself as an artist, amateur or professional. Attendees were reminded of the importance of keeping abreast with the trends of the art world, and to seek out exhibition opportunities online and at galleries. Artists left the workshop encouraged to take risks and continue developing their craft.

SCAVA presents Art Workshop Opportunities!

Hein Botha Motion Mark- Making Workshop 17

February & 2 March 2024

On 17 February 2024 and 2 March 2024, SCAVA’s own Hein Botha presented a workshop comprising of two successive modules at the George Museum. While professional dancer Lynette Du Plessis created swirls of grace and contorted herself into haunting poses, artists were invited to challenge perception and shed restriction by loosening their hands, inspiring a sense of flow and playfulness. Both modules dared artists to challenge their own beliefs of art and “what is.” While Lynette transformed her stage into an otherworldly landscape, she occasionally held pieces of charcoal in each hand and elegantly translated her movement onto a canvas upon which she danced. With Hein Botha’s mystical dialogue floating above the music and motion, a wonderful dynamism and poetry occurred. This invited artists to paint along to the music and movement and helped them perceive both positive and negative spaces contained within their work. A simple examination of line, content and form resulted in a greater collaborative dance and a deep meditation on the heft of a single mark on paper. Selected works from the workshop will be exhibited at SCAVA’s next exhibition, ‘Collaborative Flow” during 14 March – 2 May 2024.

Member Participation in Exhibitions

“Friends & I Exhibition”

René Scribante Loft Studio presented “Friends & I” at 6 Spin Street, Cape Town

An exhibition of our journey to belonging, through colour.

We were a group of 10 friends from the Garden Route, who have found joy in putting together an art exhibition, as a collective whole. Our shared love of art wove our paths together over time. Our purpose and sense of belonging stems from the unity we have as friends and this was an exhibition of our journey to belonging, through colour.

We are extremely grateful and honoured to Dr Samuel Isaacs, the president of SANAVA, who delivered the opening words on Thursday, February 1st, to our “Friends & I” Exhibition. Thank you for the valuable contribution you made to our journey.

The exhibition ran from January 30th until February 10th, and we incorporated a programme to our exhibition. Some of the organised events included poetry readings, book readings and a piano accompanied tea party.

We had a QR link to information about our participating artists. Please follow the link for more information about the artists:

Kala Combrink, Liezel du Toit, Magda Faul, Chantal Gerber, Tersia Hoffmann, René Scribante, Gerda Smith, Ian Tainton, Vandana Premchand, and Ester Zonnestein

We had a truly amazing and successful exhibition and are grateful to all that were part of our story.

Swellendam (e)scape Exhibitions

Cathy Fourie & (e)scape exhibition

Recently I saw on Instagram that a gallery I follow, the Bruise Gallery in Swellendam, was calling for submissions for their February exhibition entitled '(e)scape', 'an exhibition of new works capturing a sense of place'.

One of my watercolours, Kirstenbosch Reflections, was selected for the exhibition which opened on 15 Feb and runs until April.

It was very exciting taking a trip to Swellendam for the very well attended opening night and meeting some of the local artists as well as from further afield in the Western Cape.

The same painting was submitted , and accepted, to Fabriano in Acquarello as part of the Watercolour Art Southern Africa community. The actual event takes place in Fabriano and Bologna in Italy from April, but 'far-off' countries like us are part of the world-wide watercolour platform and take part digitally with an online exhibition on big screens. The whole exhibition is moving to Texas USA as well for the first time in October.

All very exciting!

De Rust and Freek’s Sculptures on Exhibition

Freek Steenberg Sculpture Exhibition De Rust

Why a sculpture exhibition in the Klein Karoo town of De Rust?

About five years ago I end up in De Rust. I was searching for a new form of life. A form in which I could exist and evolve.

In my search I found space, living, breathing, walking space. I found something pure and real, life simply for the sake of living, something authentic. I found so much beauty, gentle sensitive beauty, but also powerful and expressive beauty. I found time to experience and to contemplate. Above all I found freedom, freedom to live, to be, to create art, to be art and let art be.

The Klein Karoo has change my way of seeing reality because it created a new reality for me to see. It changed me. That's exactly what I'm looking for in art.

With the organic matter of the Klein Karoo I can create sculptures that are an expression of life, my inner life but also the inner life of the Klein Karoo.

Art is to exist.
