GreetingsandSalutations,
As 2025 started barreling downhill, the 280E pictured above reminded of the many reasons why we are so dedicatedtooldervehiclesbearing thethree-pointedstar.
The primary drawcard is their festidious engineering, timeless charm and understated elegance. You should find plenty of delicous content (also on young-timer models) in this latest edition of the BenzLens.
Next in line, and even more important, are the many bonds of friendship and camaraderie which this club breeds prolifically; across all regions, generations and backgrounds. In this issue, you can find examples of that by browsing articles ranging from museum visits to dress-up rides, a snoek
braai or heritage day celebration, chauffeured champagne outings and scenic multi-day tours, car show displays plus cowboy antics, the many year-end functions and evenanOktoberfest!
Typing of which, my Mom’s W 23 you see above had its 40th sales anniversary in late October andIpurposefullychosethisimage because the rear passenger window is open; for good reason. My seven-year-old daughter fell asleep during the shoot so we let her take a cat nap while the photographerandIranaround. Only when compiling this text did it dawn on me that I was seven years old when Mutti bought this car. How silly and sentimental is that? Very, but it showcases how resilient the 23-Series is and — with just a bit of dedicated care —
the Smoke Silver 280E Automatic should easily make it to its 80th anniversary photoshoot. Perhaps then I’ll be the one having a snooze onthespongybackbench.
Have you got any childhood memoriesofagleamingMercedesBenz, orperhapsafamilyheirloom which you’re keeping for the next generation? Please send me an email, a WhatsApp, or tap me on theshoulderwhennextwemeet.
Because it’s a delightful part of being a classic Benz custodian: to interact with fellow owners and hearthemanybackgroundstories. Bonuspoints:ifIseeapairofyoung eyes admiring our beautiful cars. Longmayitbeso!

• An exclusively designed capsule collection of six carefully designed outfits for men and women translates the essence of the show car into fashion
Stuttgart/Shanghai. Mercedes-Benz has entered a new era of iconic design. Representing this evolution, Vision Iconic show car embodies the freedom to think beyond convention - as a creative impulse that opens new perspectives and builds a bridge between past and future. Besides an opulent yet timeless presence, a central feature is the reinterpretation of one of the most recognisable elements in automotive history: the iconic Mercedes-Benz radiator grille. This so-called iconic grille, first introduced with the all-new electric GLC, expresses both emotion and intelligence, and enables Mercedes-Benz to stand out from the sea of sameness.
The Mercedes 35 hp is considered the first modern automobile and is the very first vehicle bearing the name Mercedes. Designed with impulses from motorsport, it’s equally suitable for racing and everyday use. The overall design was revolutionary, just 14 years after the invention of the automobile it featured a high-performance engine, honeycomb radiator, low centre of gravity and long wheelbase.

Mercedes-Benz Classic continually produces parts for classic car series, in order to ensure the long-term availability of a full range of such parts. The parts portfolio comprises around 160,000 genuine parts.
To render the availability of these genuine parts transparent to everyone, the Classic Online Parts Search has been established as a swift and simple means of presenting the availability of parts with their valid prices in Germany, promotion parts and newly produced parts in a clearly arranged manner. Once the user has found the part they’re looking for, it can be ordered from any authorised Mercedes-Benz service partner, as the Group‘s own sales and logistics network guarantees the swift supply of a comprehensive scope of parts worldwide.

It is that time of the year again time flies when you are having fun with the classics! We had a full programme for the last trimester of the year and in total we look back on a busy year.

After the tour we all got together for our customary worsbroodjie braai
with Annalie's “world famous” secret family recipe onion mix to topitoff.
In October we spruced up our cultural knowledge with a visit to NALN (Nasionale Afrikaanse Letterkundige Museum en Navorsing sentrum) located in Bloemfontein. Our member Gert Coetzee, a previous Volksblad newspaper editor, made all the necessary arrangements for this visitwhereWynoSimes, thecurator ofthefacility, sharedhisabundance of wisdom on all things Afrikaans literature.

It was heartwarming to see the magnitude of the cultural heritage being preserved for future generations.Thereactuallywasnot enough time to view everything on display, and the evening ended with tasty snacks and a yummy Amarulachocolatecake.

• The original motor show vehicle in the special exhibition "Youngtimer" at the Mercedes-Benz Museum
• Design appearance of this young Mercedes-Benz brand icon with special exterior colour "Satin alubeam silver", 19-inch multi-spoke wheels and elegant interior
• CGI direct injection: Higher power and lower consumption
Stuttgart. "Close-up" – the name of this series from the Mercedes-Benz Museum says it all. Each instalment tells surprising, exciting and interesting stories about vehicles from the exhibition. In the spotlight this time: the Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 CGI in the special exhibition „Youngtimer" (Young Classics), Collection Room 5. Until 12 April 2026, ten vehicles from the 1990s and 2000s will be on display here in a colourful and lively presentation.

In the CLS 350 CGI at the Mercedes-Benz Museum, the designers also made strong statements on the inside. When you open the door of the vehicle in the special exhibition „Youngtimer", you are surrounded by a pleasant aroma, even after almost 20 years: The interior is trimmed in fine semi-aniline nappa leather, which is soft and luxurious with a black-anthracite tone – contrasting perfectly with the cool, silvery exterior. Burr wood inlays round off the ambience, creating an extremely cosy and prestigious interior. Sporty elegance and fine craftsmanship come together perfectly in this four-door coupé.

This Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 CGI is quite stationary – and yet appears to be in motion. The extraordinary "Satin alubeam silver" exterior paintwork contributes significantly to this special effect. It was composed exclusively for the 2006 motor show vehicles and was never part of the official delivery programme.
The 19-inch multi-spoke wheels in shiny silver aluminium harmonise perfectly with the colour and design. They fill the wheel arches, while the low sidewalls extend the profile, making the car look dynamic yet also elegant. It is precisely this blend that makes the CLS one of the latest design and brand icons from Mercedes-Benz. The one-off Vision CLS vehicle was presented in 2003. The response was overwhelming, so much so that an almost unchanged production version followed in 2004.

What else makes this Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 CGI special? In 2006, it was a technology platform. Not least of all because this show car marked the first appearance of CGI petrol injection in front of a large audience at the Geneva Motor Show
The abbreviation CGI stands for "charged gasoline injection" – which signifies a technology that provides additional power and reduces consumption. The V6 engine developed 215 kW (292 hp) from a displacement of 3.5 litres, with the top speed limited to 250 km/h. After its premiere, this petrol injection system went into series production, and the CLS 350 CGI was built on a regular basis from 2006 to 2010.

After the usual yearly planning, we had Saturday 22 November booked for our year-end event, to accommodate members’ requests to avoid the busy season in December.
Watching the weather, what
was forecast to be an overcast and rainy day turned out to be just the opposite. The plan was for us to all meet at the Port Alfred old train station at h00, to give the guys and gals a not-too early start in getting there from East London, Port Elizabeth and surrounds.
The Port Alfred Choo Choo is a privately owned concern and they have a lease arrangement with Transnet to use the old train line from Port Alfred to Bathurst; but currently about 7km have been opened up. The locos are custom built on an F250 chassis with fourwheeldriveandpoweredbyasingle cylinder diesel motor; not fast but powerful enough to get the four loaded carriages and the second trainupthehillandbackdown.

50 years of Mercedes-Benz model series 123: First everyday hero and rally winner, now a classic
•World premiere half a century ago: Mercedes-Benz model series 123
•Maximum safety and dependability as the core concept
•Versatile performance – from long-haul taxi to rally winner
•One of Germany's most popular classic cars today
•Newly reissued Mercedes-Benz Classic Genuine Parts reliably ensure operation

Stuttgart. From the first moment on, this automobile inspires great confidence: after the press premiere of the new Mercedes-Benz Saloons of the 123 model series in January 1976 in Bandol in the south of France, and even before the official market launch of this upper mid-range model series, the entire first year's production is already sold out. In particular, reporters focus on the objective qualities of the vehicle: its outstanding levels of active and passive safety, embedded in a calm, well-balanced design.
The predecessor of the E-Class indubitably embodies the Mercedes-Benz brand values in its basic form – providing timeless substance and self-evident solidity. Today, this feeds into a passionate affection for one of the most popular and widely distributed classic cars inside and outside Germany

The W 123 reflects many concept and style elements of the W 116 S-Class of that time. These include its high-quality finish, the excellent suspension tuning, the generous sense of space in the interior, a newly developed safety steering column and seat-belt buckles mounted directly on the seat fittings.
From 1980 on, Mercedes-Benz already offers the ABS anti-lock braking system in the 123 model series, and the driver airbag from 1982 on.

“Evolution to measure" is the headline of the first road test report in the specialist magazine "auto motor und sport" in Issue 3/1976. The verdict is unequivocal: Mercedes-Benz has succeeded "well above average" with the new W 123. The article mentions "balanced progress, targeted further development and the uncompromising commitment to quality" as decisive factors.
From 1976 on, the W 123 rapidly shapes the face of the Mercedes-Benz brand – and what appears on the roads. It becomes a new symbol of German automotive culture and, from the late 1980s on, successively develops into a popular modern classic and finally into a versatile classic in its own right.

Fans of the Mercedes-Benz 123 series have long been able to choose from a wide range of body styles. About a year after the international premiere of the W 123 Sedan, the Coupé (C 123) follows in the spring of 1977 In September 1977, the model series gains its first Mercedes-Benz T-Model (S 123).
With this new addition, the brand places the focus on leisure and sport, thereby fundamentally redefining the estate car segment. Further body versions include long-wheelbase saloons (V 123) and chassis with partial bodywork (F 123).
With a total of almost 2.7 million vehicles produced by 1986, the Mercedes-Benz 123 model series becomes the most successful model series to date. Of these, 2,375,440 units are saloons.
The most produced 123 model is the 240 D sedan with 448,986 vehicles. The rarest is the 280 C coupé with 3,704 vehicles.

In 1977, the model series even takes centre stage in the international motorsport arena: at the London–Sydney long-distance rally, a gruelling race lasting six and a half weeks and covering 30,000 kilometres across Europe, Asia and Australia, two Mercedes-Benz 280 E vehicles prevail in the face of strong competition. This triumph impressively demonstrates the uncompromising durability and reliability of the model series.
The winning vehicle of the team Andrew Cowan/Colin Malkin/Mike Broad from 1977 can now be seen at the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

In July, members of our region were hosted by the regional chairman, Avish Maharaj, for a hands-on technical gathering. The focus of the day was the legendary M120 V12 engine, sourced from a W140 600 SEL that had unfortunately suffered flood damage.
The spanner day’s session
centred on disassembling the top end of the M 20 motor. Members explored the intricate layout of this V 2, gaining insight into Mercedes-Benz's mechanical excellenceofthe 990s.
What began as a technical exercise soon became a lively exchange of ideas, with members sharing different techniques and perspectives on how best to approachtheteardown.
Beyond its mechanical curiosity, the M 20 served as a powerfulsymbolofMercedes-Benz engineering prowess — an icon of performance and craftsmanship. The experience reminded all present of the innovation which definesthebrand.

August saw several of our members proudly presenting their vehicles at the Retro Rides Revival, held as part of the Hilton Arts Festival.
True to its philosophy that
classic cars are more than machines — that they are rolling works of art — the event offered a striking display where automotive heritagemetculturalcelebration.
An array of marques adorned the lawns, with models ranging from graceful to rugged, each one commanding admiration from festivalgoers. The atmosphere blended artistry and engineering, reminding all in attendance that the automobile is as much an expression of design as it is of mobility.
This showcase, organised by members of our very own KZN Region, was not only a highlight for visitors but also a valuable platform for enthusiasts to connect. It provided a space for meaningful conversations, the sharing of restoration stories, and thecelebrationofasharedpassion formotoringexcellence.■

The KwaZulu-Natal Region marked Heritage Day with a relaxed and memorable Saturday lunch at the home and private collection of the Geyser family.
Under the clear spring skies,
members gathered to celebrate both the diversity of South African heritage and their shared admiration for the Mercedes-Benzmarque.
The event featured a variety of traditional meals supplied by members — from fragrant curries andjuicychickenwingstodelicious puddings — each dish reflecting a pieceoflocalcultureandflavour.
The lawn transformed into a beautiful display area, with members'vehiclesarrangedacross the green, offering the perfect setting to admire everything from elegant classics to modern-day examples.
Conversations flowed easily as members caught up, exchanged stories, and discussed all things Mercedes-Benz.
It was a special day that reminded everyone why the KZN Region is known for its warmth, camaraderie and passion — not just for the cars, but for the communitytheycreate.■

A repeat invitation to a special Mercedes-Benz display saw our Northern Region members visit the Vintage and Veteran Club.
This year we received another

Tickets, tickets –all aboard for the Great Train Race!
This event was founded in 20 6
and draws its inspiration from the historic showdown between Woolf Barnato's Speed Six Bentley andLeTrainBleuin 930.Thisisthe first time our club has officially supported the event and it will surelynotbethelast!
From the exhilarating sight of a steam train powering alongside a cavalcade of vintage cars and motorcycles, tobreathtakingaerial displays and vintage aircraft, every momentwasdesignedtocaptivate andinspire.
Hosted at the Heidelberg station, the highlight must have been the arrival of the Rovos Rail steam train that departed from Pretoria and arrived at Heidelberg to the delight of all who were present. Admittedly the weather was not great, but this did not deter some of the members or the enthusiast who attended this event.
We thank the organisers for a very well coordinated event and also for the complementary bottle of wine that each exhibitor received. ■

This was the second year that our regional committee added this event to the calendar and it was unique in the sense that the event not only provided drives throughout the world, or even all over South Africa, but in particular provided several drives in our region: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Klerksdorp and Polokwane. This offered all our members the opportunity to participate in the closestdrive.
As with the Great Train Race hosted the previous day, the weatherwasunfortunatelynotthat
good, but that did not deter our members from attending. In total, 7 drivers attended the Johannesburg run, 64 went on the Pretoria drive, 33 joined the Polokwane event and 3 participated in the Klerksdorpdrive.
The Johannesburg run started in 4th Avenue, Parktown, and ended at Fangios Restaurant in Kyalami, where participants were treated to a complementary lunch. We can't wait for the next drive scheduledforSeptember2026. ■

The meeting point, with a fresh cup of coffee generously sponsored by Itoo, was at the National Museum of Military History in Saxonworld. From here, our host, National Secretary and Northern Region committee member,Jan-WillemWielsma,took us on an unbelievable and scenic drive through the historic parts of Johannesburg.Thisincludedupper Hougton with a brief stop at the MunroDriveviewpoint, providinga breathtakingviewoftheJacaranda trees below in Houghton and surroundingareas.
Fortunately the 94.7 cycle challenge (that took place on the same day) did not affect the route too much and the drive ended at the Wanderers Gulf Club for lunch, wherememberscouldenjoyawelldeserved bite to eat, something to drink, and of course catch up from ourlastevent.
Thank you to Jan-Willem for organising this very pleasurable drivethroughJohannesburg. ■

This year marked a very special day, not only on the club’s national calendar, but also on our regional event calendar with the celebration of the 40th anniversary of our club.
For this reason we decided to
host our AGM and year-end function on the 22nd of November 2025.
Thisdateisofbigsignificancein the Mercedes-Benz history as on thisveryday 25yearsago,thefirst car produced under the Mercedes name was taken on its inaugural drive in Germany The Mercedes 35HP is considered to be the first modernautomobileandisthevery firstwitha“Mercedes”badge.
Mostofyouattendedourclub’s 40th National Gathering and AGM function in Franschhoek this year, but it is only fitting that we in the NorthernRegionalsocelebratethe 40th anniversary of the club in our region, as on 23of November 985,
exactly 40 years ago, the club was formallyinauguratedandlaunched inPretoria.
For the above reason we decidedtomakeitanextraordinary affairandinvitedourclubpresident together with past presidents. Invitations were also extended to the national committee and we were delighted when Waldo and RenéScribante, togetherwithSteve Rademeyer, (the first president of the Club), and Ettienne Geel (the second president of the Club) acceptedourinvitation.
DuringourregionalAGM,Johan Krogh and Koos du Toit were re-elected as chairperson and secretary; yes, youarestuckwithus foranotheryear!

Following this was a formal welcome and ceremony, at which timeourregionhonouredtheclub’s current and past presidents, and presented each of them with a specialgift.
A big highlight of the day’s proceedings was when our gracious host and member, Pius Mokgokong, unveiled three new additions to his collection at the impressive Makotopong Car Museum; where the event was hosted.

In closing, he invited members tovisithisrestorationshop, andwe willmakesuretotakehimuponthis offerinthenewyear.
The formalities were closed off with a delightful lunch and a welldeserved opportunity for all members to mingle, discuss and reminisce, not only about the events of the past year, but also of the past 40 years! Herein lies the secret of a club like ours — the camaraderie and fond memories thatwillforeverremainwithus.

I want to extend a huge thank you to the regional committee — thank you for your time and commitment, expecting nothing in return for this club, this region and the members. A special word of thanks to Christopher Dooley who helped to make the event such a hugesuccess.

• 140 years ago, Gottlieb Daimler applies for a patent for the riding carriage on 29 August 1885
• Equipped with a high-speed four-stroke engine, the riding carriage is the world's first motorcycle
• The technological transfer to the automobile follows in 1886
• On 31 August 2025, an authentic replica of the riding carriage can be seen in action at Classics & Coffee at the Mercedes-Benz Museum

Technology platform: There are two simple levers in front of the driver of the Daimler riding carriage from 1885. The metal handle on the left controls the mixture formation, the wooden knob engages the drive system or decelerates the rear wheel via a block brake.
These controls represent the two fundamental innovations that revolutionised individual mobility 140 years ago: the development of the high-speed, compact combustion engine to series production readiness and its successful integration in a road vehicle. This two-wheeler, developed by Gottlieb Daimler and his colleague Wilhelm Maybach and patented on 29 August 1885 (DRP No. 36 423, issued on 11 August 1886), was the first functional road vehicle with a combustion engine – a milestone in the history of individual mobility

The small brass tank with hopper and pump behind the driver looks like a petrol tank It also contains fuel – but not for driving the engine. Instead, the small tank supplies the flame of the Daimler engine's glow-tube ignition. This is the heart of the two-wheeler. On 3 April 1885, Gottlieb Daimler filed a patent application for the high-speed engine with vertical cylinder The nickname because of its characteristic appearance: "grandfather clock".

The Southern Cape Region enjoyed a truly memorable mid-winter escape when members set off for an unforgettable stargazing weekend to Sutherland in the Greater Karoo from 15 to 17 August 2025.
Combining superb driving
roads, rich Karoo history and thewondersofanightsky, this tour appealed to both the curious mind andtheadventurousspirit.
From George to historic Matjiesfontein
We departed George early on Friday morning, heading north via the spectacular Meiringspoort Pass. The amazing scenery never disappoints, and a relaxed coffee stopinPrinceAlbertsetthetonefor the journey ahead. From there we joined the N and continued to Matjiesfontein, where a light lunch awaited us at the historic Lord Milner Hotel, followed by a visit to theTransportMuseum.
At Matjiesfontein we were joined by André and Tineke du Toit fromCapeTown, aswellasStephan and Daleen du Toit from Montagu, adding to the camaraderie that characterisesourregionaloutings.

Founded in 884 by the energetic Scottish railway man James Douglas Logan, Matjiesfontein began life as a fashionable Victorian health spa. Today it remains a rare oasis of peace and timelessness, renowned for its beautifully preserved historical buildings.
The village's colourful past includes visits from international cricketers, Olive Schreiner's residency, and a significant role duringtheSouthAfricanWar,when it served as headquarters of the Cape Command. The doublestorey, turreted Milner Hotel, built by Logan in 899, functioned as a military hospital, with its central turret used as a lookout and machine-gun post. At the height of the conflict, some 0,000 troops werecampedaroundthevillage.
In 968 the village was purchased by legendary hotelier David Rawdon, who lovingly restored it and reopened the hotel in 970 as The Lord Milner Hotel. Thanks to his vision — and continued stewardship by the Rawdon family — Matjiesfontein was declared a National Heritage Site in 975, thereby ensuring its preservation for future generations.

From Matjiesfontein we continued to Sutherland, passing the impressive Roggeveld Wind Farm, with more than 00 wind turbines turning steadily against the Karoo horizon — a striking contrast between modern technology and ancientlandscapes.
Our base for the weekend was “Die Heks se Huis”, with the main house serving as a central gathering point and members accommodatedinthesurrounding cottages.WinterinSutherlandlived up to its reputation, and after a freezingvisittoSterreland,Erikvan EdenandhisbrotherAndrielitafire in their fireplace — only to be smoked out of their room for several hours due to a blocked chimney, much to everyone's amusement.
Sutherland was founded in 723 as a church and market town serving theregion'ssheepfarmers.By 872 it had just 38 registered citizens living in 9 houses. The imposing DutchReformedChurchinthetown centre dates back to 899 and was used as a fort by British soldiers during the Anglo-Boer War Evidence of this period remains visibletoday, includingtheruinson RebelskopandtheAnglo-BoerWar cemeteryontheoutskirtsoftown.
The area remains a strong livestock-farming region, with some farmers still “trekking” their sheep seasonally between the Tankwa lowlands and higher summergrazing.
Another lesser-known fact is that Sutherland is the most southerly place in South Africa where diamonds were discovered — old diggings can still be seen in thearea.
Friday evening's stargazing was unfortunatelythwartedbyovercast skies — though the freezing temperatures were very much present. Saturday morning made up for it with a visit to the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), an extraordinarypieceofengineering. At 80 tons, the telescope is rotated on just a few airbags — an aweinspiring example of modern scienceintheheartoftheKaroo.
Later that afternoon we visited the planetarium, where the darkness and warmth proved too invitingforsomeofourmembers.A few well-timed snores echoed through the show, to the great embarrassment (and amusement) oftheirspouses.
Saturday evening delivered on allfronts:aheartyKaroobraaiatthe Sutherland Hotel, the Springbok rugbymatchonscreen, andfinallya successful stargazing session at SALT. Under truly dark skies, the starsoftheGreaterKaroorevealed themselvesinbreathtakingclarity
Despite the cold — and perhaps becauseofit—thiswasaonce-in-alifetimeexperience.
From historic villages and sweeping Karoo landscapes to world-class astronomy and warm

fellowship, the Sutherland weekend reminded us just how special our country is, especially whenexploredtogether.
An unforgettable journey under some of the darkest skies in SouthAfrica.■

What began decades ago as a
simple regional gathering has evolved into one of the club's most anticipated social traditions —nowperfectlycomplementedby avibrantshowcaseofretroclassics andmodernsupercars.
Spring once again arrived in Mossel Bay in true Mercedes-Benz Club style with our Annual Spring Snoekbraai, hosted for the second consecutive year alongside the Santos Beach Auto Extremo at the everpopular de Bakke venue.
This pairing once again proved inspired. While gleaming machinery lined the beachfront, the unmistakable aroma of snoek onthefiredrewmemberstogether for fellowship, laughter and good conversation. At the heart of it all stood our legendary Master Snoekbraaier, Kobus Harris, supported by his trusted team, continuingalegacythatdatesback to the very origins of the Southern Caperegion.
A special highlight of the day was the formal recognition of our braai team. Kobus, Naas, Chris, Rensche and Koot successfully
completed their apprenticeships andwereawardedtheirSnoekbraai Chef'sclothingandcolours, aproud momentthatreflectsbothskilland tradition.
Adding a touch of distinction, Rensche also received her chef's clothing and colour as the club's much-lovedSweetPotatoQueen.
Our sincere thanks go to everyone who contributed behind the scenes to ensure that logistics, firesandcamaraderiewereequally well managed. Their dedication continues to keep this tradition aliveandthriving.
As this cherished tradition continues to grow alongside the Santos Beach Auto Extremo, we lookforwardtomanymoreSprings spenttogetheraroundthefire.■

Saturday the 6th of September delivered yet another highlight as wetraversedthedramaticTradouw Pass, carving our way towards Jakkalsvlei Winery in Herbertsdale. On Sunday 7 September, Santos Beach provided the spectacular backdrop for the Santos Beach Auto Extremo — a celebration of both classic
Mercedes-Benz heritage and more modern cutting-edge performance. As guests of the Southern Cape Region's Annual Spring Snoek Braai Picnic, members once again enjoyed a club tradition that has become legendary over nearly three decades.
A defining element of the 2025 event was the generous sponsorship of MUA Insurance Acceptances (Pty) Ltd. We are hugely grateful for their support, which elevated the Santos Beach Auto Extremo into a world-class motoring event in its own right. All motoring exhibitors were welcomed with a glass of champagne, immediately setting thetonefortheday, whiletheMUA hospitality tent proved to be firstclass and was enjoyed by many throughouttheevent.

We sincerely hope to see them joiningusagainontournextyear.
Reflecting on the inaugural event, motoring journalist Ferdi de Vos described Santos Beach Auto Extremo as an occasion that rivals leading international classic car events — where iconic vehicles meet one of South Africa's most beautifulcoastalsettings.
With growing participation and an unmistakable sense of tradition taking root, his conclusion remains apt: like the Spring Snoek Braai itself,SantosBeachAutoExtremois firmly established as an annual

The final quarter of 2025 offered members several memorable experiences, including visits to remarkable private car collections, the introduction of a new regional committee, and a superb yearend function in the Boland.
In September, members were
invited to view Yanni Hatzi's impressive collection of modern classic cars. As is evident from the photo above, there are delectably dark specimens of Mercedes-Benz in this collection, with many being exotictwodoormodels, liketwoCL coupés,anSLSAMG,plusasvelteSL Roadster.
The German-themed display was a real treat to members, who also enjoyed delicious boerewors rolls. Yanni's warm hospitality was, asalways, greatlyappreciated.
In October it was finally time to re-visit a popular ladies event from many years ago: Chauffeurs and Champers(Champagne).Whathad started as a jovial suggestion of a ladies-only run quickly morphed
into a chauffeur-driven excursion for our female club members and friends. Rumour has it that a few nervous husbands only agreed to chauffeur duties because they refused to relinquish the keys of theircherishedclassicMercedes!
Back then — about a decade ago—theladiescommandedtheir chauffeurs to visit a vintage Cape Town hotel for high tea, but this time they gently cruised through the Winelands to the charming Sweetwell Restaurant between SomersetWestandStellenbosch.
Andwhiletheelegantlydressed ladies enjoyed a magnificent high tea experience, a jovial bunch of “chauffeurs” sat at their own table discussing the many virtues of the vehiclestheypiloted.
The Western Cape Regional AGM was held in mid November at the JATAN Estate just outside Stellenbosch. A new regional committeefor2026wasappointed, andweextendourcongratulations to the following members on their appointments:
Chairman: JürgenApel
Vice-Chairman: WillemLaenen
Secretary: MarizanneSteenkamp

Membership: DianeLaenen
Treasurer: RynoWilson
Once again, the Long family kindly opened their impressive car and aircraft collection to our members. We sincerely thank them for the generous hospitality they continue toextendtotheclub.
SaronsbergCellarnearTulbagh hosted the region's 2025 Year-End Function, giving many members the perfect opportunity to stretch the legs of their favourite classic Mercedes-Benz. Approximately 70 attendees enjoyed a delightful afternoon beneath the shade of an oldoaktree, complementedbyfine wine, excellent food and lively conversation. Our Club President, Waldo Scribante, also addressed the gathering with a few words in celebration of the Mercedes-Benz Club of South Africa's 40th anniversary.■

Is this the country's most stylish, safe, sophisticated but unwanted mode of transport?
I left the hordes of crossovers behind to take a smooth ride in this beautiful Benz…
You should know: To be more
precise, this is a new W2 4 Mercedes-BenzE220dinPatagonia Red Metallic with obligatory AMG dress-up kit, enormous wheels, zero ground clearance, white blonde leather and a dashboard made entirely out of screens... in other words, a terrible idea for mostofourcrazy, messy, outdoorsy SouthernAfricanfamilies.
More info: Despite its big wheels and low-profile rubber, the rideisvelvety smooth.Orsporty,at the touch of a button. Ditto for the fairly quiet 2L turbo-diesel 4cylinder with mild hybrid boost. It also steers with unexpected gusto or u-turns its 5m length in just over m,nothankstorear-axlesteering.
Why you shouldn't: You get to play with up to 62kW or 440Nm through a lightning-fast 9-speed automatic gearbox... and people will quickly ask you why you didn't buy the GL-insert-letter-here SUV instead? Show them all the spaceage gadgets, triple screens or the manycuttingedgedriveraids…and they'll drift off to the crossover section.
What else? Mercedes claims 0 00 in 7.6 seconds (we got 7.5) and top speed of almost 240km/h, yet nobody buys these accomplished sedans anymore. Nope, not high enough off the ground, and that enormous 540L boot is still inferior to those in our oh-so-beloved SUV's.

Why you should: Have I mentioned its party piece yet? An E220d can average 5L/ 00km from the 66L tank, gifting you a range of ,320kmbetweenfill-ups.Ofcourse that is an ideal scenario, but with thatmildelectricshovebehindyou, thiscarisnotjustsmoothandclever to operate, but can be hilariously efficienttoo.
Insummary:If,likeme, youstill loveagoodsedan, thisisoneofthe best and most advanced ones. Prices start around .5 bar and include a 2-year unlimited mileage warranty with a 5-year / 00,000km maintenanceplan. ■
