BRING IT ON! Self-righting, able to recover if capsized by large breaking seas and capable of ‘all weather’ operations, ‘Svitzer Oued Martil’ is a new 15m Interceptor 48 Pilot from Safehaven Marine. She is the third of her kind supplied to Svitzer for pilotage operations in Tangier, Morocco, and Safehaven’s 47th pilot vessel delivered worldwide. ‘Svitzer Oued Martil’ will be delivered after completion of commissioning and sea trials after another challenging but successful COVID build for Safehaven. No client visits were possible due to travel restrictions and handover was undertaken remotely by video conference aboard; recognition of a yard trusted in its abilities to deliver high quality pilot vessels without extensive client supervision.
Powered by a pair of Volvo D13 500hp engines, ZF gearboxes and conventional shaft drive, ‘Svitzer Oued Martil’ has an operational speed of 25kts. Accommodation comprises a crew/ pilot capacity for 7, all on KAB suspension seating in her comfortably 27,000btu air-conditioned main cabin, with additional seating for 5 provided in a spacious forward cabin. The vessel’s central helm position, with all navigational screens and instrumentation easily viewable and accessible, gives excellent all round visibility and control of the craft when undertaking ship pilot transfers alongside. She is fitted with a sacrificial shoulder fender system, protecting the main boarding area and cushioning the inevitable
hard impact that can occur in poor conditions. The larger fender enables a purpose-made gap for the ships boarding ladder to sit safely when alongside without it getting trapped. The new pilot has a new Safehaven design sliding boarding ladder/platform with an adjustable reach, raising the pilot approx. 1.2m above deck. Accessing the platform from the opposite side to boarding, the pilot is able to cross the foredeck area quickly and safely; the boarding platform is adjustable in 3 stages and can be set according to the distance to the ships side, the prevailing sea state and likely roll of the vessel. FEATURE: VESSELS The first of three Multi-Mission Inshore Patrol Vessels (MMIPV) vessels for the South African Navy (SAN) was launched 25 March by Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT). The vessels will augment South Africa’s maritime security by enhancing the country’s capability to respond effectively, rapidly and cost-effectively to threats such as illegal trafficking and fishing. DSCT Project Manager, Ian Stewart says the launch is an important milestone for the shipyard. “This is the culmination of three years of hard work by a dedicated team of people. Ultimately, more than one million man-hours of work will be invested in the construction of the three MMIPVs.” The more than 600-ton vessel was transported from the DSCT shipyard on the evening of 23 March 2021 to the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) synchrolift at the Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront Basin. The move was conducted by Mammoet South Africa, using 48 axle lines of Self-Propelled Mobile Transporters (SPMTs) to provide precision movement. Mammoet Project Manager, Uzayr Karimulla, says while moving the vessel at night meant less impact on traffic, the reduction in light came with its own challenges. “Through careful planning, close collaboration, and the teamwork between DSCT and Mammoet South Africa, our team made this move a success. We are very happy to have been part of the project, contributing to the advancement of safer waters in Southern Africa.” Once the vessel was raised onto the synchrolift, the team waited for high tide to come in before moving it out of the V&A Basin via TNPA tugs towards the Elliot Bason. The testing of the ship systems will now commence before the vessel will officially be delivered to ARMSCOR/SAN, before the end of the year. The MMIPVs are built according to the patented Damen Axe Bow design, which ensures low resistance, high sustained speed in waves and superior sea keeping characteristics in the toughest conditions. As vertical accelerations are reduced significantly and bow slamming almost eliminated, the safety of the vessel and crew

DSCT fully supports the transfer of technology, inclusion of local companies in the execution projects, and stimulation of export transactions under the Defence Industrial Participation (DIP) programme, which particularly focuses on benefiting SMMEs, Military Veteran (MV) Owned Entities and Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) Compliant Entities. The partnerships formed during this project have led to the successful launch of the MMIPV. One can truly state that the MMIPVs have been built in South Africa, by South Africans for South Africa,” she adds. The engineering of the vessel commenced in 2018 and the keel was laid in February 2019. “Despite the COVID lockdown period, our local skills and partnerships, resilient production schedule and advanced planning capabilities of our Cape Town team, allowed the different subcontractors and teams to work on the vessel in a safe manner,” notes Moloi.

30 YEARS OF AZIPOD First seen on the Finnish icegoing vessel Seili in 1991, ABB’s Azipod® electric propulsion has clocked over 20 million running hours at an impressive availability rate of 99.9 percent, while saving about 1,000,000 tons of fuel in the cruise segment alone. Today, over 25 different vessel types rely on Azipod® technology – from cruise ships to cargo carriers, icebreakers, ferries and superyachts. In total, ABB has sold over 700 Azipod® units over the course of three decades. Azipod® propulsion was initially designed as a future-proof system able to adapt to virtually any energy source. With the electric drive motor at its core, the Azipod® system can be powered by electricity drawn from different energy sources including batteries and fuel
cells, and vessel owners can add or exchange power sources as they evolve. Electrical power minimizes engine noise and vibration as well, ensuring a smoother, quieter ride. With the electric drive motor housed within a pod outside the vessel’s hull, the Azipod® system can rotate 360 degrees, increasing manoeuvrability and allowing even the largest vessels to dock in harbours where turning circles are restricted. Crucially, Azipod® propulsion also improves operating efficiency, boosting a vessel’s hydrodynamic performance and cutting fuel consumption by up to 20 percent when compared with a traditional shaftline setup. Space saved by locating the motor outside the ship allows for more flexible design and frees up space for other features.

Dyena’s new release enables the skipper to monitor all motion parameters and make an objective assessment of the conditions; altering plans or course accordingly to increase efficiency or reduce risk, critical in transit and transfer phases. The intuitive layout is simple to read in all conditions, with current and peak readings displayed graphically and numerically. With shock mitigation technology enabling boats to be driven harder and faster, determining the effect of impacts on the machinery or electronics is important to their long-term operation. Data can be downloaded for reporting or analysis. The SeaTRAX compact base unit is mounted to the vessel and a remote sensor attaches to the coxswains seat. Offshore wind kudos A British crew transfer vessel operator has kitted out its latest CTV with DuroWiper pantographs commercial marine windscreen wipers, benefitting from ease of installation and reduced maintenance. Manor Renewable Energy Ltd took delivery of the Manor Endurance offshore support vessel in September and since then its six Class 90 pantograph units (three front and three rear) have been put to the test at Scottish Power’s East Anglia ONE offshore windfarm. “Our unique selling point as a CTV operator is that we provide accommodation for the crew 24/7 on the windfarm without the need for a mothership,” said Michael James, Marine Superintendent at Manor Renewable Energy Ltd. “So every part of the vessel, including the equipment, has to stand up to being based offshore. We have had no problems with the DuroWiper pantographs. They were the right product for us, we could mount them externally, there is a washer system integrated into the arm and they are easy to install. They ticked all the right boxes.” Lessons were learnt from the fit-out of the
Manor Endurance’s sister ship, “The Manor Venture has internally fitted wiper systems which meant that we had to fabricate hosing inside the vessel to contain the systems which involved a lot of time and effort. The wiper
systems had no integral wash system and we have had to replace the wiper panels more than once since installation,” Michael James added. “DuroWiper pantographs on the new vessel have solved these issues.”

HIGH EXPECTATIONS FROM LOW VOLTAGE The move towards electric drives and more marine systems now operating at 48VDC has led to the UK’s largest Victron distributor, Energy Solutions, seeing an increased requirement for power electronics in that extra voltage range. Energy Solutions offers an unparalleled range of extra-low voltage products operating at 48 VDC, from inverter chargers, solar charge controllers and DC-DC converters; all of which are key components in these systems. Associated control systems and 48 VDC lithium battery banks are also available. Rather than stretch 12V systems beyond practical application, the benefits of a 48V system include much more efficient components such as chargers, the ability to install larger capacity inverters, manageable cable sizes, and of course higher output alternators in reasonable package sizes. SAFE AND SECURE The next generation of InteliLite single-gen-set controllers, InteliLite 4, is now available from ComAp. The new platform builds on its predecessors success with market-proven design and additional features such as fully remote communication, high focus on cybersecurity, configurable U/I/R analogue inputs, drag and drop PLC or easier communication interfaces with RS485 onboard. InteliLite 4 controllers can communicate remotely via ComAp´s plug-in module system. The range is also compatible with the latest version of WebSupervisor that allows users to manage and monitor ComAp controllers (and third party devices) online. WebSupervisor runs securely on Microsoft Azure network servers, and coupled with the security features of AirGate 2.0, ComAp says users can rest assured their generators are safe. Security was a main focus for the new InteliLite 4, designed with respect to ISA62443. The security on the InteliLite’s communications cards has been improved with connection via the new AirGate 2.0 connection protocol. Locally, the controller
features multi-user password-protected accounts, as well as extensive history and change logs to ensure accurate reporting and employee access logging. Administrators can allocate levels of access to users, with varying levels of password-protected access available for different users on the same controller.
Next generation on deck units After an extensive R&D, design and testing phase Nauplius Workboats is expanding its services; creating a new range of on-deck units for aquaculture. A new oxygen generator, built into a 20 ft standard container specifically for the marine environment, will be delivered to leading marine farmer MOWI in 2021. Using an air-receiver the oxygen will be dissolved, via an ejector, to create oxygen-enriched seawater which can be released into the fish pen. With a capacity of 55 Nm³ per hour of 93% pure air, the system is also capable of filling oxygen packs on board. Included in this new range of products are a Falmosan dosing unit and Hydrogen Peroxide dosing units that require minimal space occupation. All units can be integrated with new or existing treatment systems - skidbuilt or containerised. Founded in 2006 by marine engineer Jaap van den Hul-Kuijten, and Gerrit Knol, now Technical Director Nauplius, the company decided to change the way in which it offered its vessels; rather than start by offering a client a standard product, the conversation starts with the ‘needs and wishes’ guiding the design. Nauplius Workboats is constantly developing designs to address practical needs. “We are grateful for the developing

Listening out A JFC Marine Data Buoy is to monitor how noise impacts whales and dolphins. The buoy was deployed some 9km off the coast of Baltimore, west Cork, as part of Ireland’s first ever real-time acoustic monitoring project. The Smart Whale Sounds project is being undertaken by Ocean Research and Conservation Association (ORCA) Ireland, a non-profit organisation based in Cork, in partnership with Rainforest Connection and supported by Huawei Ireland. The specially designed Data Buoy will gather data over the next year. Lead researcher and marine mammal ecologist Emer Keaveney of ORCA Ireland, said: “Increased levels of marine traffic from container ships, pleasure boats, speedboats, and eco-tour operators has created a significant noise pollution issue. Sound pollution causes as much damage to marine life as overfishing, pollution and climate change, and is believed to cause behavioural changes that interfere with the health and survival of the animals.” An autonomous hydrophone, akin to an underwater microphone, will be attached to the buoy. It will record whale species in real-time and train sophisticated machine learning models to identify different species calls. The data will be used to create a marine wildlife detection and classification model, with the potential to be applied to other projects across the globe Researchers said that the project will provide a much greater understanding of what is happening on Ireland’s ocean floors and will assist with the identification and classification of species in Irish waters, their distribution and behaviour, and how noise pollution is changing these patterns.

Katy Ware Training Standards working group to look at establishing high standards of training in MASS. The group consists of representatives from European and International maritime authorities. Maritime Minister Robert Courts said: “Autonomous vessels offer significant opportunities for the UK’s economy as well as helping meet our carbon reduction targets. “This is unchartered territory, and with the UK’s global expertise in shipping safety standards, the UK is best-placed to set the global benchmark in the development and rollout of safe, autonomous shipping.” Katy Ware, Director of UK Maritime Services said: “Seafarers
and their safety is something we take very seriously and that includes making sure they are trained in all aspects of the maritime industry that they work in. “As new technology is introduced and new ways of working with it, we want to make sure the training standards keep pace with it so that our seafarers stay safe while they work. “This working group will not only set the benchmark for qualifications required by operators now but also in the future.” The standards currently in place in the International Convention of Standards on Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) do not currently adequately provide for standards for the operation of MASS. It will include such aspects as specialisms, competencies, training structures and qualifications. Damen Shipyards Group strengthens Executive Board As of April 1, Ronald Suhlmann is now Chief Financial Officer of Damen Shipyards Group. He succeeds Tom Touber, who held this position ad interim for two years. Ronald started his career at Ballast Nedam and moved to Damen in 2015, where the Register Controller was both Financial Director of the Naval and Yachting divisions. With his appointment as CFO, Suhlmann becomes a member of the Executive Board of Damen. The new role of Chief Counsel strengthening the areas of risk, compliance and legal on the Executive Board has been filled by Mario Herrebout, current general counsel and company secretary. Mario joined Damen Naval in 2009, moving to Damen Group at the end of 2019.

VESSELS A working relationship of over thirty-five years standing has resulted in the handover of the largest vessel ever delivered by Macduff Ship Design; Stern Trawler MFV ‘Endeavour V’ is the fifth vessel from the yard for skipper Peter Lovie of Knockhead LLP. Keen to further improve fuel efficiency, service speed and sea keeping from the existing vessel, an early study concluded that a longer vessel, free from the constraints of registered length, would probably be required. At this point the Wolfson Unit, based in Southampton UK, was contracted to complete an initial trial using CFD technology to assess the differences in calm water hull resistance between the existing model and a new longer concept model. As expected, the data showed that a significant reduction in hull resistance could be achieved with a longer hull form, however, the computational based analysis could not assess the differences in sea keeping qualities. Over to the Solent University Towing Tank facility for scale model towing tests at a range of speeds in both calm water and head seas with wave properties reflecting those found in the north Atlantic where the owner typically operates; conclusively proving that the longer hull experienced considerably less pitching motions along with lower bow impact from wave force. With the research complete, one final review saw the hull lengthened by a further metre to seek further improvements in hull

efficiency as well as affording a little more space within the vessel. With the hull lines faired and stability assessed the construction plans were then drawn up and submitted to Bureau Veritas classification for approval along with the outfitting and engineering drawings. Finomar Shipyard based in Szezcin, Poland were sub-contracted to fabricate the hull and wheelhouse which upon completion was
towed to Macduff for full outfitting to MCA and BV regulations. Sea and fishing trials were conducted in the Moray Firth before the vessel was signed over to the new owners who departed their maiden trip, fishing off the west coast of Scotland. Early indications are that the hull is performing as anticipated with increased speed, reduced fuel consumption and improved sea keeping evident.
New additions to enable year-round operation High Speed Transfers (HST), the crew transfer vessel (CTV) operator supporting offshore wind energy and oil and gas industries worldwide, has confirmed its order of two BARTech 30 CTVs and an additional hybrid Chartwell 24. The vessels will be built at Diverse Marine, on the Isle of Wight, UK. HST’s order will ensure that the business is able to continue to provide the highest standards of comfort for passengers during voyages to wind farms even in regions that typically see higher sea states such as the US. The two BARTech 30 vessels will offer HST the flexibility to operate year-round, benefiting from a significant reduction in vertical acceleration to ensure optimal performance. The proven Chartwell 24 vessel formula will be further enhanced with BAR Technologies’ FOSS, offering improvements in seakeeping and boosting efficiency. With decarbonising the vessel supply chain becoming a key imperative for wind farm owners and operators, BAR Technologies’ CTV is set to provide HST with fuel – and therefore emissions – savings of up to 30%. EXPANDING COMMITMENTS
Armada Engineering, the Falmouth-based leader in marine hydraulics, has expanded its workshop in Barcelona as part of its commitment to deliver worldwide services to the growing superyachts sector. The new workshop is located at MB92 Barcelona, one of the largest superyacht refit shipyards in the world, with a 220m dry dock and 4,800-tonne shiplift among its service facilities. Armada Engineering Managing Director Joff Collins says: “In August 2019, Armada Engineering opened a new facility inside MB92 Barcelona, in order to offer an even better service to our key superyacht customers. After just one year of operation, we had begun to outgrow our workshop and started to look for larger facilities to service our growing number of customers.” “We are happy to announce that we are now fully functioning in a new larger workshop inside
MB92. This new space offers a 5 tonne crane and better access through a 15m entrance, so we can now service even larger vessels. Project Manager Jon Else said: “Since opening in Barcelona, we have worked on over 20 superyachts, including some of the most luxurious in the world. We have provided the full range of services, everything from fault finding to overhauls and complete refits. The new facilities allow us to work more efficiently, especially on large equipment. It is a really exciting development for the company and will enable significant further growth over the years ahead.” A total contingent of 5 staff from Falmouth are currently based at Barcelona. This the latest development in a period of rapid growth for Armada Engineering, which has seen a string of new contract wins since its management buy-out in 2017. It comes at a time when the global market
for superyachts has experienced impressive growth. Over the last 20 years, the worldwide fleet of superyachts above 24 metres in length has almost quadrupled, from 2,000 in 1999, to nearly 8,000 in 2020. Joff Collins says: “We are continually building on our experience in this area, having worked on some of the world’s largest and most sophisticated superyachts. The new workshop is part of our strategy to grow this part of our business even further. With the current disruption with air travel, having key staff based locally in the Mediterranean is a further asset for us. “Over recent years Armada has carried out projects in Europe, USA, South America, Egypt, Japan, China, and South Korea. This is a truly global customer base. Our team thrives on the tough technical challenges created by this market and can be mobilised to any location in the world.
Buyout creates one stop solution The Pontoon and Dock Company has been bought and rebranded by one of its founding directors. Following the retirement of co-founder Dan Bryant, Simon Nadin takes full control of the business. The new company P&D Marine Group, will encompass the five arms of the business: The Pontoon and Dock Company, P&D Environmental, Multi-Mover UK, P&D Marine Services and PDMS Trailers. Sub-surface reaps investment Long-term partnerships, service agreements and an understanding of the ‘life-time value’ of customer relationships are at the heart of recent investment in diving and sub-surface engineering according to The SMS Group. Supporting recent sector growth, the business has invested in new plant and equipment, and relocated legacy equipment, to create four new Diving and Sub-Surface Engineering ‘Hubs’ at its existing marine engineering bases in Dover, Lowestoft, Portsmouth and Avonmouth, whilst simultaneously expanding its subcontract diving database of SQEP. The SMS Group previously supported its core customer diving and sub-surface engineering needs via a single location in Dover, Kent. Diving and Technical Manager, John Webb said: “The provision of support to core SMS customers around the Group is very, very important. To better look after our existing customers we’re proud and pleased to make this investment. It’s great news at the right time.
“Our service offering remains exactly the same. Next step in £250k investment A £250k investment in machinery and testing facilities at Sea Sure has taken the next step with the arrival of a new machining centre. The HURCO 5-axis machining centre is one of the company’s largest single investments to date and will be used for R&D, rapid prototyping, safety-critical components and to speed up the manufacture of existing products, maintaining the high quality which is Sea Sure’s hallmark. The new 5-axis machining centre will be

These solutions will utilize SPBES’ innovative lithium-ion technology, designed and approved for use in both inland and seagoing vessels, ports, harbours and in the offshore sector. Sales surge in high-spec systems
Norwegian davit supplier Vestdavit saw its sales surge to a record Nkr165 million ($19.2 million) last year - up 25% on 2019 as global orders for its proven high-specification boat-handling systems defied a downturn in the overall maritime sector amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Naval force fleet renewals are driving increased demand for davit systems to deploy boats for rapid military response. Fresh orders have rolled in mainly from the US, Europe and Australia, with demand coming primarily from navies and coast guards within the public
procurement sector that account for more than 75% of Vestdavit’s davit turnover, according to managing director Rolf Andreas Wigand. Wigand says there is in particular strong interest from the US for computer-controlled dual-point davits, part of Vestdavit’s extensive range of robust bespoke systems supported by a global after-sales network as it moves in step with clear market trends going forward. “There is growing interest from both the military and commercial segments in our systems able to handle unmanned surface
vehicles and autonomous underwater vehicles that can carry out tasks 24/7 without risk to human life,” he says. “There are also many new ship projects on the horizon centred on a mission bay able to handle multiple craft - such as MOB boats, workboats and USVs, as well as containers - for which our MissionEase system is well-suited.” Wigand sees the orders surge as vindication of Vestdavit’s focus on technological innovation, with sales on a similar upward trajectory this year.

INVESTMENT & GROWTH Torqeedo has announced a new direct distribution organisation in Norway to address the growing market for its marine electric propulsion systems in that region. “Norway is a world leader in the movement toward electrification of land and water transportation, with broad government support for green initiatives,” said Tommi Salonen, director of EMEA retail sales for Torqeedo. “More than half of new cars sold in Norway are electric or hybrid, and the country is investing heavily in charging infrastructure.” Torqeedo projects in Norway are already underway. Torqeedo supplies Deep Blue electric propulsion systems to Greenline Yachts, a major international builder of electric and hybrid boats, and is working with Canal Boats Telemark to deploy the world’s first 100 per cent electric charter fleet. The new emission-free fleet will commence operation in the scenic Telemark Canal in May, initially with six new Greenline electric yachts. The Norwegian government is setting up a network of charging points for boats in the Telemark Canal and adjacent coastline to support the electric boat fleet. “Our new direct distribution presence will allow us to provide faster response times and better technical support for our growing customer base of builders, fleet operators, shipyards, retail dealers and end-users in Norway and Denmark,” said Dr Michael

NIBC Bank, Damen Ship Lease and Damen Financial Services have digitally shaken hands on a multi-year partnership in the field of ship leasing. The financing from NIBC will be used to enable financial or operational lease solutions for customers of Damen Shipyards Group. This concerns state-of-the-art workships in offshore (wind) energy and (hybrid) tugs for, among other things, port activities. These leases are offered by one of the funds of the A combination of private investment and HSBC has provided £12m to ramp up production of the CXO300 diesel outboard. Cox Powertrain has successfully received £9 million from existing private investors and secured a further £3million loan from HSBC UK Equipment Finance to meet increasing demand for the 300hp diesel outboard following its launch last year. Production of the CXO300 began in May 2020 and has since shipped to more than 16 territories around the globe. Tim Routsis, CEO of Cox Powertrain, said, “2020 was a year of milestones for Cox Powertrain as we entered production of the CXO300 despite the challenges of the global effects of Covid-19. This injection of capital allows us to now scale up our business and fulfill our growing order books.” The CXO300 is built at Cox Powertrain’s HQ in Shoreham, UK, where £6.7 million from preceding investment was used to finance a state-of-the-art production facility, built with flexibility and scalability in mind.

Decommissioning – the view from space BMT has been awarded a project by the European Space Agency (ESA) to assess the feasibility of using space-based data to support the decommissioning of energy assets including oil and gas platforms and wind farms. Decommissioning activities need to be carefully handled to minimise environmental impact as they create operational and financial risk for the asset owner. Oil and gas decommissioning activities are ramping up due to installations developed from the 1970s onward reaching their end of life. The wind farm decommissioning market is also emerging, as assets installed in the 1990s and early 2000s start to approach their end-of-life phase. Earth observation data from satellites can play a key role in the decommissioning activity, providing regional overview of the maritime environment and allowing operational data from decommissioning teams in the field to be interrogated in real-time. This presents exciting opportunities for the European industry to create new commercial decommissioning solutions enabled by space data and through collaboration with decommissioning sector knowledge industry leaders. Funded through the UK Space Agency’s contribution to ESA’s Space Solutions programme, the study will look to provide accurate information relating to hazards such as sea and weather conditions, maritime traffic and environmental pollution. It will enable a reduction in the cost of energy asset decommissioning by providing improved scenario planning in advance of decommissioning, as well as minimising/ optimising vessel usage resulting in a reduction in fuel usage and therefore reduced Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. The results will establish the roadmap for service implementation through follow-on demonstration projects. Saving fuel (and paper) DEIF’s energy management system Blueflow is helping Buksér og Berging AS (BUBE) streamline invoicing and reporting and reducing fuel consumption on 33 tugboats. BUBE is a leading supplier of marine services within port and terminals, ocean towage, offshore work and complex marine operations. “Naturally, the fuel-saving aspect was of interest to BUBE, but from the very start, they were triggered by the way that Blueflow presents data in a clear way. BUBE also saw administrative benefits by implementing the system”, explains DEIF’s Sales Manager Per Ole Sørensen. The Blueflow system contains detailed information on fuel consumption and sailing distances to enable report generation for automatic invoicing. Blueflow also
registers if one of BUBE’s vessels leaves Norwegian waters. Blueflow helps BUBE keep track of its vessels and the Blueflow wallboard at the superintendents’ office keeps them constantly updated on the fleet’s status.

The environmental impact from activities within boatyards, marinas, harbours coastal and inland waterways is without doubt a real and ever-increasing problem. Plastic products do not break down but break up into small pieces which can be easily ingested, act as potential traps and can badly injure wildlife that comes into contact with them. P&D Marine Services (PDMS ) has come up with the Waste Rover to help tackle the problem. The P&D Waste Rover is a remote-controlled marine waste robot designed to be easily carried to a work site, at just 70cm long x 70cm Marine plastic waste is a growing environmental issue with a huge amount of mismanaged waste flowing into the oceans each year. The waste then breaks down into microplastics in the ocean’s ecosystem, significantly impacting marine life. Suzuki Motor Corporation has developed the world’s first* Microplastic Collecting Device for installation on outboard motors, focussing on the structure of the outboard motor which pumps up tons of seawater to cool the engine and then returns the water to the ocean. The device can be easily installed to the return hose and does not affect the engine performance since it only utilises the returning water that has already been used to cool the engine. During monitoring research conducted in Japan, a substantial amount of microplastic

The Waste Rover can be driven around marinas, rivers and lakes by a remote operator standing on the shore, whilst it collects floating debris into the specially designed cargo net which holds up to 80L. The collection net can also be fitted with an absorbent layer, so that hydrocarbons (oil & fuel) frequently found on the surface of harbour waters can also be collected. James Burnell, Operations Director explains,

GENERATING INTEREST Marine services provider Williams Shipping has a new Eurocarrier 2209 multicat as the latest addition to the fleet. Built at the Neptune Marine yard in Aalst, The Netherlands, Willchallenge specification includes all Caterpillar machinery, an HS Marine 185 tonnes /m hydraulic crane, a 50 tonnes anchor handling and towing winch and hydraulic anchor handling pins. The accommodation, fitted out to a very
high standard, includes fully airconditioned cabins for four crew. She joins Willendeavour, another Eurocarrier 2209, and the Williams Shipping fleet of Damen Stantugs and Meercat workboats. “Willchallenge is versatile and powerful and has already generated a lot of interest from customers keen to take advantage of her capabilities,” says Philip Williams, Managing Director – Marine at Williams Shipping.

HOPPER DREDGER RANGE EXPANDS
Damen’s impressive array of vessels for different dredging projects has been updated, the renewal and expansion of the Hopper Dredger range confirming Damen’s commitment to being a full service port support partner. The TSHD (trailing suction hopper dredgers) range now covers hopper volumes from 650 m3 to 5,000 m3. The new series has been designed with sustainability in mind; no need for ballast water during operations, including sea voyages, and no fuel tanks in contact with the hull. The engines are fully optimised to
use a minimal amount of diesel and are fitted with SCR systems to meet IMO Tier III. “Practical maintenance is of vital importance on a TSHD. Due to the continuous wear of the sand/water mixture all piping and main components need frequent checks,” Olivier Marcus, Damen product director Dredging, explains. “In the design this has resulted in an efficient pipe routing, the use of high grade materials and ample space around the equipment for inspection and repairs.” “Dredge operators always have a clear idea
on the various tasks their hopper dredger is to perform, whether, for instance, channel maintenance for a Port Authority or efficient sand winning, transport and discharge for a commercial operator.” Olivier explains, “This specific operation requires specific gear; the new TSHD range accommodates this. As hopper volumes range from as small as 650 m3 to a serious 5,000 m3 they fit a multitude of jobs. This standard range can be seen as a platform which can be fully customised by adding various options to ensure the dredger is 100% fit for its job.”

Ascension Islands project complete Build and delivery of a new cargo-carrying barge for the Government of the Ascension Islands has been completed by Manor Marine. The successful project follows the delivery of three almost identical barges, also commissioned for shipping to and use in the Ascension Island waters, in 2018. Construction of the latest barge started in August 2020 and was ready for delivery just four months later. Heavily constructed, the 17-metre selfpropelled barge was built in two halves for shipping to the island. Managing Director Leif Cooper commented, “Manor Marine has been building these types of barges for over 25 years and has exported vessels all over the world. The Ascension Island Government has been a pleasure to work with throughout this project. “The quality of the construction and the finish from the Manor Marine Team was to a high standard and has helped us to firm up several orders with clients booked for 2021/22.

Net Zero Carbon in Construction both achievable and necessary Civils contractors have welcomed the UK construction industry’s nine-point plan to deliver net zero carbon in the industry by 2050, saying it was both ‘achievable’ and ‘necessary.’ The Construction Leadership Council has published CO2nstruct Zero, a nine-point plan that will drive carbon out of all parts of the construction sector and enable the industry to play its part in delivering the UK Government’s objective of net zero for the Supporters

Now, as an Incorporated Civil Engineer with the Institution of Civil Engineers and Member of the Association for Project Management, Kevin is responsible for contract management, civil engineering design, and project management for projects throughout the UK and the Falkland Islands. After which he took advantage of a year’s secondment to the Aberdeen Office, followed by nearly three years in the newly opened Southampton Office.

EXHIBITOR PROJECT SPOTLIGHT – FISH DETERRENT Kaymac was contracted to install a fish deterrent system at the new Pembroke Power Station. RWE Power was constructing a new 2000MW combined cycle gas turbine power station at the site and the fish deterrent system was required to reduce the amount of fish entering the cooling water intakes and entering the fish return system. The system consisted of an open steel lattice deck supported on steel legs, which were fixed to the concrete invert in front of the cold water intakes. The installation was carried
out from the sea using two crawler cranes on a pair of pontoon barges positioned in front of the intakes. Divers removed over two metres of silt from the invert to allow the legs to be positioned on the invert. The legs were connected by horizontal and diagonal bracings to give rigidity, and these were attached to the bullnose piers of the concrete structure using saddle brackets. The remaining steel work was then bolted onto the legs working from a man-riding basket
suspended from one of the cranes, and then the GRP decking and handrail were installed. A series of acoustic beacons were then installed which could be lowered from the deck down stainless steel guides to the sea bed on winches. These would emit a low frequency sound which would deter the fish from entering the CW intake structure Finally, to protect the structure from corrosion, each of the sixteen legs were then fitted with two 25kg sacrificial Zinc anodes, installed at bed level by the Kaymac dive teams.
21-point Net Zero plan launched M&CCE Expo supporter CILT (The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport) has launched a 21-point plan for transport and logistics, covering all transport modes and activities, to achieve net-zero by 2050. CILT believes that “we can achieve net-zero by 2050” through a range of measures recommended to UK government and others in its latest report, Routes to Net-Zero 2050: 2020 Year End Summary. Kevin Richardson, Chief Executive, CILT(UK), says: “Transport accounts for 28% of UK carbon emissions and, despite the downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic, transport emissions will grow with recovery unless action is taken. Government is clearly the key player, but industry, organisations and individuals are also urged to take action, and we believe there is plenty to be achieved, starting today.” Recommendations for national government include setting carbon budgets for the

Paul Le Blond, editor of CILT’s Route to Net Zero 2050 Year-End Report, says: “All those within the profession have a key role to play in transport decarbonisation. We must spread the message that transport can achieve net zero by 2050 by a range of measures, some technological, some societal and some through policies.”

DYWIDAG JOINS M&CCE EXPO
With a reputation for providing ‘Special Solutions in Difficult Ground’, Dywidag has completed many challenging projects over the years; including work on the 800m wide masonry and concrete Loch Arklet dam, located north-west of Glasgow and built over 100 years ago to provide water to the city. Due to increasing leakage the dam had to be strengthened using high-capacity ground anchors. In total, 64 vertical DYWIDAG Strand Anchors were installed from the crest of the
existing dam into the underlying bedrock to act as tie-backs. Double corrosion protected, the strongest anchors reach an ultimate strength of 8,100 kN. Logistics was a major challenge for the contractors involved. The only access to the job site was via a narrow and winding single track road south of the dam on which only four DYWIDAG Strand Anchors could be delivered on each vehicle. Installation of the anchors had to be carried out from the top of
the dam, as there was no possibility of working from a barge mounted crane due to the loch level having been drawn down for safety reasons. A special 6,800kN long stroke jack, the highest capacity anchor stressing jack in the UK, was used for both the anchor tests and the final stressing as the DYWIDAG Strand Anchors are some of the highest capacity ground anchors that have ever been installed in the UK.

Sat has been working closely with the GGR board following his appointment as their Board Advisor in early 2020.
