Two men have been sent for trial in connection with the death of a girl after a high-speed sightseeing RIB crash. Emily Lewis, 15, was a passenger on the speedboat Seadogz during an excursion on Southampton Water in August 2020. She was injured when the RIB hit a buoy in Southampton Water and died later at Southampton General Hospital. The speedboat was driven by Michael Lawrence who is charged with gross negligence manslaughter. The owner of the boat, Michael Howley, is charged with failing to take all reasonable steps to secure that the boat was operated in a safe manner. Both men have been bailed to appear at Winchester Crown Court on 2 March following a hearing at Southampton Magistrates’ Court in February 2022. Mr Lawrence, from Blackfield, Southampton, entered a not guilty plea to the gross negligence manslaughter of Emily.

Mr Howley, from Hordle, Hampshire, indicated a not guilty plea to the charge of failing to take all reasonable steps to secure that the boat was operated in a safe manner. He also indicated a not guilty plea to an alternative charge of failing to operate the Seadogz Rib Charter Ltd company in a safe manner. An MAIB report released at the time stated Seadogz carried out high speed manoeuvres up and down Southampton Water, zigzagging across the main channel, passing close to navigation buoys and conducting figure-of-eight turns in order to cross its own wake. After jumping over the Red Falcon car ferry’s wake, the RIB collided with a buoy causing all those on board apart from one to be thrown from their seats and sustain injuries.
Almost 140 exhibitors at new show Almost 140 exhibitors will be taking part in the UK’s newest boat show, BoatLife Live, taking place at Birmingham’s NEC from February 17. The four-day show will be opened by Pip Hare, the eighth woman in history to complete the Vendee Globe solo round the world yacht race who will then take to the stage to talk about her experiences and take questions from show visitors. Boats on show will range from powerboats to narrow boats, speedboats to smaller watersport craft with more than ten UK boat debuts, including the RYCK 280, Seven Seas Hermes Speedster, Swordfish F80 and Polycraft Tuffy 300. Alongside the boats there will be a number of equipment and engine companies, including Quick UK, B&G, Elite Teak, Seaglaze Marine Windows, Pirates Cave, Honda, and
Mercury Marine that will be complimented by other marine leisure brands including Vanclaes Trailers, Flexisail and ProMarine Finance. “We are very proud of what we have achieved, particularly with the challenges of Covid and stock availability,” said Richard Dove, BoatLife Events MD. “The new year announcements that relaxed the Covid rules and the Düsseldorf cancellation really helped our show and we’ve seen a surge in bookings even in the last few weeks.” He added: “The support from the industry and media has been incredible and we are absolutely sure that the industry wants a show in the Midlands.” Other show attractions include a replica traditional pub and a VR feature for visitors to try extreme kayaking or wakeboarding.

AUTONOMOUS NAVIGATION PROJECT
Mixed picture for all Early sales reports show consumer demand for new boats and outdoor recreation remain strong; however stock availability and supply chain woes look set to last several more months. Dealers are blaming boat builders for lack of supply and boat builders in turn are blaming their suppliers. Lead-in times for many products have more than doubled – in some cases orders are taking months to fulfil. We’ve all got used to the ‘just in time’ philosophy but in today’s world, this is just not feasible for the marine industry. And with inflation soaring, the question being asking by many is ‘will consumers be priced out of the market’? And with other events and attractions rapidly coming on stream, will the demand witnessed over the last couple of years continue? It’s all pointing to a mixed picture. However, on a positive note, as Boating Business goes to press, the UK’s newest boat show, BoatLife Live, is about to take place. As we’ve all seen, over the last couple of years boatbuilders and boat owners have adapted to the lack of large face to face events. We’ve all got used to virtual or more recently, hybrid events and the success of these does lead to questions about the viability of boat shows. Just last month, Princess Yachts held its own event in lieu of boot Düsseldorf. The invitation only event was held over ten days with the boatbuilder declaring it a great success and an event that would be repeated. And Sunseeker International – while declaring there is still a place for boat shows - has had a showcase of its models set up at its base in Poole for many months now and is supporting its worldwide distributors to set up similar facilities. So it’s refreshing to see the BoatLife organisers taking the plunge with their inaugural show. Only time will tell as to how successful the event will be, but early indications are positive. The organisers appear to have listened to what exhibitors want – a short, sharp boat show that their customers have been asking for and in a location in the middle of the UK with good transport links making it easily accessible to most of the UK’s population. The show has no doubt benefitted from the lifting of many Covid restrictions that have encouraged exhibitors to sign up – so far there are 138 exhibitors and 124 boats. And the pent-up desire to attend an ‘in-person’ boat show will no doubt help visitor numbers as well. Organisers say they have listened to their trade customers and, recognising how important boat shows are for trade business, introduced a reduced cost trade ticket. Judging by the reaction of those I’ve spoken to, this could prove to be a smart move. And while it’s too soon to say if the show will appear on the international boat show calendar, for a first attempt, the organisers should be very pleased with what they have accomplished.

MARINA TAX CHANGE CALL Marinas should be taxed in the same way as hotels and other hospitality accommodation, according to a paper published by ICOMIA Marinas Group (IMG). Two-fifths of countries surveyed by ICOMIA have a reduced VAT rate for hotels and campsites that is not applied to marinas, making nautical tourism less attractive and creating a barrier to growth in the industry. Martinho Fortunato, IMG chair, argues that
marinas are a boost to local economies, providing more than just a place to moor boats. “Marinas are not just resorts, they are clusters of companies, an attraction by themselves, a centre of activities and a hospitality infrastructure,” he said. “Knowing all this, why aren’t marinas considered like that in terms of tax? Why don’t we have a bigger harmonisation between activities and countries?” The paper, which has input from the European
Boating Industry (EBI), recommends marinas are reclassified as tourism organisations, and as such have the same levels of VAT applied to them. “EBI is advocating for a level playing field in the tourism sector at EU level which must include VAT rates to be adapted for the entire nautical tourism sector,” said Philip Easthill, EBI SecretaryGeneral. “This can further increase competitiveness and incentivise economic growth and jobs.”

US BOAT RETAILERS WARN OF MARKET FRAGILITY Retailer sentiment is more optimistic in 2022 but there are some big hurdles to overcome. That’s according to the December 2021 Marine Retailer Pulse Report produced by the financial services firm Baird, the Marine Retailers Association of the Americas and Trade Only. Retail dealers reported better trends in December, with 44% reporting growth versus 26% reporting a decline. Sales of new powerboats in the US are expected to exceed 300,000 for the second consecutive year, according to figures released by the National Marine Manufacturers Association. Record highs in 2020 were surpassed in 2021 by around 4% to 6% and fiveyear sales averages were up by 7%. “Following record sales in 2020, recreational boating remained the leading outdoor recreation sector in the US in 2021 with new powerboat sales exceeding 300,000 units for only the second time in 15 years,” said Frank Hugelmeyer, NMMA president. “The pandemic created shifts in how Americans prioritise their time, and boating is an activity they’re doing with family and friends to escape from stresses on land. As a result,
than supply, even though many report that sales have slowed down from a year ago. Some caution that this is at least partly due to price increases and there is concern the public will not continue to pay the increase. Parts and product delays are hurting dealer reputation and the cost of product is getting extreme according to some of the respondents. Inflation is again pricing families out of boating both in purchase and usage. What’s not working is a ‘total lack of inventory and boat deliveries running way behind’ with the concern that when the manufacturers finally get their operations up and running to deliver stock boats again, the market will have lost its demand.

The first test vessel to be powered by Artemis Technologies’ Artemis eFoiler(R) electric propulsion system is an 11m workboat that is expected to take to the water in a few weeks. “It’s incredibly exciting to announce a major milestone for Artemis Technologies, moving into our new facility here in Belfast Harbour,” said Artemis Technologies commercial director, David Tyler. “From this new facility, we will be able to directly An investigation into a fire on board a motor cruiser on the River Shannon in Ireland has exposed possible shortcomings in legislation governing pleasure craft. On 6 September 2020, four people set out in X4, a Linssen Grand Sturdy 35.0 motor cruiser rented from boat hire service, Carrickcraft. After around 45 minutes a fire broke out in the engine compartment. The passengers were rescued by a passing charter boat and no one was hurt in the incident which caused the motor cruiser to sink in around eight metres of water. An investigation by the Marine Casualty Investigation Board found that the seat of the fire was in the engine compartment but the vessel was so badly damaged the exact cause of the fire was impossible to determine.

BUSINESSMATTERS NATHAN TALBOTT is a partner at Wright Hassall LLP
It’s so easy to make payments. We can use contactless, PayPal, Apple Pay, BACS, CHAPs and others. But there is always a nagging concern – what if I make a mistake? Will I recover my money. A mistaken payment is usually an accidental transfer of money to someone who has no entitlement to it. This may happen because of a mistake made by the individual or business making or requesting a payment, or by their bank. It is also called a “misdirected payment”, or, in banking terminology, “misapplied funds”. Mistaken payments can be made to people or businesses who are known to us, but who are not in fact owed money - a standing order may not have been revoked, or a direct debit may be made after an account has been closed. The mistake when making payment may be one of fact - such as thinking that a bill is outstanding when it has already been paid, or a mistake of law – for example, paying tax without realising it is not legally allowed to be charged. Even though the mistake may be entirely your own the law allows you to recover your money. “Restitution” is the legal remedy that allows the reversal of such an injustice. The recipient of the mistaken payment may repay you voluntarily, or you may have to institute legal action to successfully recover your loss. Full value You can recover the full value of the monies that have been enjoyed at your expense. This means both the amount of the money that was paid and possibly its use value while it was erroneously

A GUIDE TO MISTAKEN PAYMENTS
held; courts have allowed interest and bank charges to be reclaimed. As almost all payments these days are made directly or indirectly from our bank accounts, the first thing to do is to contact your bank. In most cases it cannot simply reverse the payment but should begin acting within the sector’s misdirected payments recovery framework to give you the best opportunity to recover the money. Banks processing digital transactions through the payment services Faster Payments and Bacs must act within two working days of being alerted. Where the recipient does not dispute that the money was sent to them by mistake, it will be returned within twenty working days. If, for some reason, this is not possible, your bank should advise what action you may take. Reversing a payment ultimately needs the cooperation of the recipient of the money, so success may depend on whether you know the identity of
the recipient. If you know the payee contacting them as soon as possible will probably resolve the situation. However, if you mistakenly transferred money to a stranger’s account, they need to consent to a reversal of the payment, and you therefore need the support of your bank and the receiving bank to contact that person, and to persuade them to allow the money to be repaid. The receiving bank may also freeze an amount equal to the mistaken payment in the recipient’s account. Pursue If the recipient refuses to return the money, you need their details to pursue the matter. These should be requested in writing from your bank. If the bank refuses to provide these details on data protection grounds, you will need to get a court to order compelling the bank to disclose this information. Once you have these details, you may contact the recipient directly. If the
recipient continues to refuse to repay, you need to take legal action against them. Employment law protects employees from unlawful deductions from their wages, but expressly allows employers to recover overpayment of salary or expenses. However, if the overpayments were made over a long period of time or was made some months before and has only recently been discovered, an employer is advised to work out with the employee how best to repay the mistaken amounts. Those that refuse to return monies, or spend it, may face a criminal charge. So, if you notice an unexplained payment in your account, you should contact your bank immediately to investigate it and have it reversed. Failing to do this may not only result in a charge of theft but may be assisting in money laundering if the funds have been obtained illegally. However, there are some situations where a recipient
may keep a mistaken payment. The first is if the recipient has experienced a detrimental change of circumstances linked to the monies since the payment was made and it would be unfair to force repayment. Usually this means that the money has been spent, and the recipient has no way of repaying the money. However, there must be a credible argument as to why the recipient believed that the money could be kept and spent – otherwise it would simply be theft. Another defence to a claim for repayment is that the recipient assumed that the money was “good consideration” for a debt that was owed. In summary, as cash continues to decline as a payment method, both the banking industry and government are under pressure to provide better safeguards to protect customers. Nevertheless, vigilance and quick action also continue to be the best defences against mistaken payments.

NEW VARNISH FROM SKIPPER’S LINE Tropical UV is a new varnish from Skipper’s Line that is now available in the UK after two years of testing on motorboat-taxis in Venice alongside other products. Tropical UV has a new oil-based formulation and replaces Skipper’s Starwind. “The application testing on the Venetian taxis has shown that there is an improved resistance to marine exposure and UV protection,” explained Kelly Tolhurst of Skipper UK. “Tropical UV has been formulated to achieve a more superior high gloss finish, with characteristics to help improve the practical application of this type of varnish.” In the development and testing phases, focus was given to the improvement of flowing ability of the varnish for brush application, particularly for
vertical application and its ease of use in a boatyard or onboard environments, whilst still achieving a rich high gloss finish. The product is also suitable for spray application.
The varnish can be used directly on to bare wood, or it can be applied on top of Skipper’s two-pack priming varnishes Poliglass and Poliglass Gel UV. Tropical UV now provides

FLAG Paints partnered with Pip Hare Ocean Racing for her Vendée Globe campaign, with the round the world sailor using the company’s FLAG Performance Extra antifoul on her boat Medallia. Pip became the eighth woman in history to have completed the solo race, pushing her old IMOCA 60 to a performance few thought possible. “We’re proud to have been able to support such an epic and amazing achievement,” said Martin Noon, FLAG Paints MD. “FLAG Performance Extra is a high-performance coating, and it contains very high copper content - one of, if not the highest in the UK - and is free from booster biocides.” The semi-hard antifouling is suitable for most craft up to 40 knots in all areas of fouling. It is also suitable for trailered craft and drying moorings.
It is available in light blue, dark blue, red, black, steel white in 2.5 litre cans. FLAG is continuing to work on the approval of dicopper oxide being allowed to be used in European Antifoulings (EU Biocidal Products Regulation 528/2012). Along with other
manufacturers, FLAG has been working on the research and development for the approvals for many years. “The final hurdle appears to be the environmental studies, what will be acceptable from an environmental point of view,” explained Martin.

ASAP, part of the Arleigh Group, has expanded its range of marine coatings for above waterline applications with the addition of Raptor Marine from U-POL. The polyurethane coating has been designed for durability and ease of use. It is suitable for all types of vessels, especially those requiring a product to stand up to harsh elements and working environments. “ASAP believes that Raptor offers many extra benefits to the end user and professionals over existing products in the market,” explained Kirsty Sutcliffe, marketing coordinator, Arleigh Group. Key products include a two-pack marine protective coating, suitable for different marine painting applications, such as decks, engine bays, and transoms. It is supplied as a fourbottle kit which contains 0.71 litres of Raptor per bottle and 0.95 litres of hardener, typically covering around 4m2 per litre. Aerosols are available in 1 litre and 5 litre options. The product can applied with a roller, spray gun or aerosol, is watertight and highly resistant to impact, chips, abrasion, UV light and salt spray. Due to its strong adhesion properties, in many cases it can be directly applied to substrates, making preparation and coating process easier. It has a fast-drying time between coats and can be customised using a colour tint or suitable gel coat pigment. For added safety, a slip resistant additive can be added to the bottle kits. “U-POL Raptor products have been widely used in the marine market for more than 75 years and their kits are widely recognised among other industries for their protective coatings,” added Kirsty.

New combined undercoat and primer Two of International’s latest topside products are One UP and Toplac Plus. One UP offers boaters a faster application time by combining the benefits of an undercoat and primer in one coat, reducing the number of coats required while maintaining substrate protection. The formulation is suitable for multiple substrates and the product will help enhance the finish of International’s one-part finishes. Toplac Plus is a silicone alkyd gloss topcoat suitable for all substrates above the waterline. The coating is available in a range of colours and can be applied using a brush or roller. It has been developed to have good flow and levelling with tipping by brush no longer required. “The development of One UP and Toplac Plus continues our commitment to developing solutions that save time and money,” said Matt Anzardo, AkzoNobel global yacht segment manager. “This system requires fewer products and coats, while delivering an excellent, high-quality finish, while its expanded range of colours is in direct response to what we know our customers want.” He added: “One UP and Toplac Plus have been a great addition to our industry-leading range of coatings, with the perfect blend of convenience and performance in colours we know boat owners are going to love.”

UNDERCOAT PRODUCES A HIGH GLOSS FINISH International’s Perfection Pro Undercoat from International is formulated for use with Perfection Pro Topcoat. The undercoat has received great reviews from satisfied painters, says one of the UK’s distributors, Marineware, with praise being received for its high gloss finish. “This product is time effective; it dries quickly meaning you can apply three coats in one day, it’s also easy to sand which offers time saving benefits in comparison to the previous Perfection undercoat system,” explained Marineware technical representative and former painter, Glen Keefe.
“As we all know labour and time in boatyards are the main cost factors in painting boats.” The product can be
applied using brush or roller application methods and is designed for use by professional applicators only.

CREW SAFETY IS PRIORITISED
Salmon Power Sports has been contracted to supply 12 Anti-shock Variable Ballast (AVB) systems to Palfinger Marine for the new Netherlands KNRM lifeguard rescue fleet. The safety of the KNRM volunteer crews was prioritised throughout the design process, resulting in a vessel that will be equipped to handle any conditions. “This contract is especially meaningful for Salmon Power Sports, as our AVB system was included in the vessel specifications at the request of the volunteer crews, who have experience with our system on their current Atlantic 75 fleet,” explained Joseph Salmon

MD, Salmon Power Sports. “We thank both the KNRM and their crews for their continued trust and support and applaud the KNRM for involving their volunteers so heavily in this process.” The AVB ballast system works by trimming the RHIB in all speed and weather conditions, reducing slamming on fast craft and providing safer conditions for crew. The system is mechanical with no power draw and no associated running costs.
“Palfinger looks forward to have the opportunity to integrate the Salmon Power Sports AVB system for the first time ourselves to see the advantages of this system in certain operations and gain experience of its benefits,” explained Arnoud Straakenbroek, Palfinger global sales director governmental and professional boat and davit system. The first boat is expected to be completed by the end of 2022, and will then undergo testing for three months, after which the remaining 11 boats will be constructed.
NEW PLBS AVAILABLE FROM LALIZAS Lalizas is now able to supply ACR’s ResQLink RLS and ResQLink 410 RLS. The personal locator beacons (PLB) require no subscription for use and includes the new Return Link Service (RLS) feature which provides confirmation to the user that their beacon’s emergency distress message has been received and that their location has been detected. RLS works by sending a signal back through the Cospas Sarsat satellite network to confirm to the beacon user that the distress message from a
beacon has been received and their location has been detected. User confirmation is distinctly indicated by a flashing blue light. With three levels of integrated distress signalling technology – GPS positioning, a powerful 406 MHz signal, and 121.5 MHz homing capability – the ResQLink 410 RLS will relay the users’ position to a worldwide network of search and rescue satellites. Additionally, a built-in strobe and infrared strobe facilitate night-time, or other low visibility, rescues. Simply deploy the
antenna, press the on button, and the beacon will provide you with confirmation when your distress message has been received and your location detected, while also effortlessly guiding rescuers to within 100m or less of your position. To use the PLBs, the antenna is deployed, and the button pressed. It will guide rescuers to within 100m or less of your position. The product has multifunction clips that provide several wearability options.

NEW RACING LIFERAFT FROM LALIZAS
A good marketing strategy aims to reach customers at all points of the purchasing cycle to maximise chances of finding new potential customers and engaging with them in a variety of ways – a 360°approach. Below are some top tips for developing a successful 360° marketing plan. 8 Research and define your target market Study your audience, get inside their minds. Know where they hang out (online and offline), what problems they have, what solutions they want and how much they are willing spend. Consider the buyer cycle: awareness, consideration, purchase, post-purchase. At each stage, take a unique approach to communicate with your audience – considering different methods, channels and messaging. 8 Include online and offline methods For every stage of the cycle, consider the use of digital and traditional marketing. Remember audiences may vary from channel to channel, so make sure your messaging is appropriate for the audience you are talking to. 8 Don’t stop after the first purchase It’s far harder to find new customers than it is to build and maintain relationships with existing ones. Consider your post-purchase experience - what does this look like? Ask for reviews and feedback. Entice higher spending and repeat purchases with discounts, loyalty rewards, or even just simple reminders to repurchase. Make it easy for them and most importantly say thank-you.

CREWSAVER AND YAK OUTPERFORM MARKET EXPECTATIONS Safety campaigns combined with ever more comfortable lifejackets have had a large bearing on boaters’ attitudes to on-water safety. “We have seen a large increase in the yacht and powerboat markets over the past two years, driven largely by boat owners choosing to use their boats for domestic vacations due to Covid lockdowns and travel restrictions,” explained David Duffin, general manager leisure and business integration at Survitec/Crewsaver. “Also, with staycation holiday makers and, in a lot of cases, an increase in leisure time because of working from home, we saw a boom in ‘off the beach activities’ such as stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking.” As a result of the increase in boating, Survitec has

LESLEY ROBINSON British Marine CEO The pandemic, supply chain shortages and Brexit have all dramatically impacted planning horizons. For two years the focus has necessarily been on addressing the changing circumstances of each day, with little time to take a longer view.. That’s why our National Conference (15-16 March) is perfectly timed. It will run at the start of a year of replanning roadmaps, exploring fresh business development ideas and seeking new contacts. The Conference will focus on innovating to succeed across key business disciplines spanning the full range of leisure marine industry activity. An essential ingredient of any conference is the quality of its content. We were recently pleased to announce former Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls, as our National Conference headline economist. His exclusive keynote and live panel discussion on the economic outlook for the marine industry will be one of several critical scene-setting sessions. The programme will be led by subject matter experts and punctuated by welcome networking opportunities. Continuous development in safety buckle design has led to one of Makefast’s most popular products, the Slimclick Double Action Safety Buckle. The buckle features a ‘marine grade’ stainless steel mechanism, a push click action for quick and easy connecting and a double action release to prevent accidental unbuckling. “The conveniently slim profile disguises it’s
strength, rated to 800Kg breaking load, making it suitable for the toughest environments meaning these are likely to remain in service for many years too,” explained Makefast p roduct manager for safety and marine hardware Bill Caldwell. Another long-standing product from Makefast is its Two-Part Adjuster Buckle which has seen sales surpassing 1.3 million sets.
Plastimo is launching a new performance lifejacket with input from the sailing elite. The new SLR196 lifejacket was designed with the cooperation of François Gabart, skipper of Trimaran SVR Lazartigue and Kevin Escoffier skipper of PRB IMOCA. It’s designed to be the successor of the Plastimo SL180 lifejacket, with a renewed emphasis on performance.
PERFORMANCE LIFEJACKET
High-tech Uniquely, the lifejacket has an exclusive bladder with an ergonomic neck support giving improved comfort and a higher freeboard. It also has deflation and control valve systems in case the need arises to deflate urgently. The SLR196 lifejacket is approved as 150 N category with 196 N actual buoyancy.
The jacket is lightweight weighing 1.1 kg dry and 1.2 kg when wet. The combination of optimal flexibility, lightweight and performance is obtained thanks to the polyurethane film air chamber technology invented by Plastimo and engineered in its liferafts. It has a 3D fit mesh back panel which helps to improve comfort and breathability and it’s equipped with soft housing and a QBZ Zip. The jacket has an integrated design handle with an easy release system, soft straps for accessory attachment points and an adjustable Y-shape dual crutch strap. Its inflator can be an automatic or hydrostatic release. Plastimo’s SLR196 will be on the market in spring 2022.
“It demonstrates the popularity of simple design and a product that just works, many of these can still be seen in use many decades later serving recreational boaters, commercial mariners and rescue services worldwide,” added Bill. Both products are ISO-12402-7 accredited, suitable for use in lifejackets and other personal floatation devices. Makefast Group has

PROFILE
BEN WILLOWS
CEO of the UK Sailing Academy
Growing up far from the sea, being born in Kettering, Ben Willows has undergone a journey that differs from many others but is ultimately driven by a non-academic passion for being on the water. “Dad got me into sailing dinghies from a young age, life was centred around sailing and racing,” he says. “Being part of the British sailing team when younger and racing dinghies has always been a major part of life.” The experience took Ben to the sailing charity UKSA when he finished school, with the ambition of becoming a sailing instructor, at the time never dreaming he would be appointed CEO of the sailing association. “I wasn’t academic and didn’t enjoy school, wanting to be out on the water, so going to learn how to teach was really exciting for me. It was the first time I was learning about something that interested me.” After his training Ben travelled to Australia for a couple of years, teaching and sailing professionally. On his return to the UK, Ben took a job with the UKSA running its professional instructor programmes, splitting his time between operations in Barbados and Cowes. When UKSA expanded to Australia, he jumped at the chance to use his contacts and headed back ‘down under’. Starting point When a family illness forced Ben to again return to the UK, his role at the UKSA took on a different turn and he became involved in setting up the GBR Yacht Racing Academy – now the British Keelboat Academy – the starting point for the careers

However, he believes that working with an excellent mentor for several years helped him to transition to the CEO role. He’s now working with a new external mentor to develop further. And he has some key operational thoughts including saying ideas out loud: “Have a clear vision and plan that is created and fully supported by your staff team. Then say it, say it again and then say it some more. People want to be and feel part of something and know they are making a difference. It’s important you show them how and where they are supporting the organisation to achieve its goals.” of many talented sailors. In 2009, Ben moved on to run all UKSA’s operations and training programmes, progressing to director of operations; in 2013 he was promoted to deputy CEO and then in 2016 he took on the top role. “You can transfer so many skills from instructor training and coaching into business management and leadership. Confidence gained in standing up and teaching people has without doubt helped me manage and lead this high performing charity.” UKSA has more than 10,000 students passing through its doors each year, accessing a breadth of aspirational pathways – from inspiring a school child taking part in watersports for the first time enabling them to build confidence, broaden horizons and develop life skills, through to training young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, looking to begin or progress in careers in the maritime industry. Highly regarded “We have the widest breadth of maritime training anywhere in the world,
resulting in a complex delivery requirement which is audited and highly regarded by all the relevant industry bodies including RYA, MCA and Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) and Ofsted.” Being head of 200 staff across a wide range of functions, a four-acre site in Cowes offering 300

residential beds, a large yacht and watersports fleet and a suite of technical classrooms ashore including navigational simulators that teach students to be officers on vessels up to 3000 gross tonnes, Ben has his work cut out.
Qualification routes In terms of the changes and challenges that he has experienced, Ben notes that the marine sector has changed significantly over the last ten years with better training schemes and qualification routes available to access the sector and employment such as maritime apprenticeships, clearer pathways, and qualifications routes to the professional yacht sector. And Ben is keen to point out that the rewards are also great, particularly ‘seeing amazing work supporting and changing the lives of so many brilliant and talented young people, many of which have had a difficult start to their lives’. And he’s quick to add that we spend more time at work than with our friends and family so our jobs should be fun, supportive and in an environment where everyone is treated with respect and brought into the organisation. “Challenge, have fun and smile are some of our key values.” 8 Ben Willows began running the UKSA’s operations and training programmes in 2009

She has worked within the marine industry for the last 20 years, as a journalist for various boating editorial magazine and website titles, including Motor Boats Monthly, YBW.com and Motorboat and Yachting, latterly co-running her own magazine, Motorboat Owner. Claire will be a familiar face at UK boat shows but also out on the water as she used to co-run cruises in company for groups of motorboats. She will be involved in planning of marina events as well as looking after the marina’s social media pages. Jack Trollope has joined Fox’s Marina & Boatyard as marine electronics advisor. Jack has sailed since he could walk and has spent his working life in the marine industry. He brings with him a wealth of experience in the field of marine electronics and engineering. He will be based in Fox’s Chandlery and available every Tuesday and Wednesday to offer advice and product information.
