Andrus Aljas,

P

ärnu has been the summer capital of Estonia for the past twenty years now. Although Estonian leaders and government are not going to move to Pärnu for summer, we nevertheless take our role very seriously and make maximum effort in order to be worthy of this title. Pärnu Music Festival and Järvi Academy, Weekend Festival Baltic, August Insomnia, Pärnu Film Festival and Pärnu Fringe Festival are just a few examples of the vast variety of events arranged in Pärnu during summer time and attracting visitors from all over Estonia and abroad. Believe me, every company and undertaking of our town strives at all times – including tender autumn and crisp winter – to do their best to make our guests' stay as memorable as possible. This is our ambition too. The ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa opened its doors a year ago on the 1st of July and thus we are celebrating this summer our first anniversary. We believe that we have grown beyond the age of an infant and

This spring our first steps were officially recognized: the Estonian Hotel and Restaurant Associaton granted us a rating of a 4 star hotel for five years. The rating alone, however, doesn’t make a hotel a good one. Therefore, we keep on going with our efforts in a hope that you like staying with us, have a good holiday and enjoy everything that the summer capital has to offer. And when the weather happens to be poor, then at our hotel you will always find warm pools and hot saunas.

Jakob Kullberg: Tundsin end Pärnus oodatuna

Ma reisin palju ja kohtan palju imelisi inimesi, aga see isiklik ja sõbralik viis, kuidas mind võeti vastu Pärnus, oli erakordne, tõdes tuntud Taani tšellist Jakob Kullberg. Tekst: HELE-MARIA TAIMLA Fotod: ANU HAMMER

H

6 | RESORT MENU

Pärt on „meister näiliselt lihtsas, mis polegi tegelikult lihtne“. Pärdi loomingust on Kullberg lindistanud oma versiooni teosest „Fratres“. Tegu on 1970ndatel kirjutatud 10-minutilise ansambliteosega.

UNISTAB JA MÕTLEB AINULT MUUSIKAST

Koos Pärnu linnaorkestriga esitas Kullberg 20. sajandi klassikute loomingut.

Neidki kontserte dirigeerib Kaisa Roose, kelle käe all mängis Kullberg ka Pärnu linnaorkestriga. Järgmisel aastal plaanib Kullberg Tallinna külastada vähemalt kaks-kolm korda, sest siinse muusikaeluga seoses on tal juba hulk plaane. Enne siiatulekut teadis Kullberg legendi sellest, kuidas Taani lipp just Tallinnas taevast alla kukkus. Väidetavalt juhtus see 13. sajandi esimesel poolel, kui Taani kuningas

8 | RESORT MENU

Valdemar II Tallinna vanalinnas lahingut pidas.

Jakob Kullberg: I felt really welcome in Pärnu

“I travel a lot and meet many wonderful people, but the personal and friendly way how I was welcomed in Pärnu, was unique,” Jakob Kullberg, a well-known Danish cellist noted. Written by: HELE-MARIA TAIMLA Photos: ANU HAMMER

R

enowned cellist Jakob Kullberg held a concert with the Pärnu City Orchestra. He stayed at the four star spa hotel ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa, where he was provided with a cozy hotel room – and that was exactly what he loved best about the hotel: its rooms and interior design. “I really enjoyed my room. There was something about it, which made me feel like this was my private space away from the rest of the world,” Kullberg said.

WONDERFUL LOCALS

40 years old Kullberg was in Estonia for a third time. A few years ago he performed a couple of times in Tallinn, this year he visited for the first time the Estonia’s summer capital Pärnu. He was most impressed by the way he was welcomed by the director of the Pärnu City Orchestra, Mr. Tõiv Tiits, and by Helen Erastus. “I travel a lot and meet many extraordinary people, but the personal and friendly way how they took care of me, was extraordinary! Never have felt so welcome.” Out of famous Estonians Kullberg knows Arvo Pärt, who has been the most performed living composer for several years now. “Sure, I know Arvo Pärt – who wouldn’t?” Kullberg remarks and adds that “Pärt is a master of seeming simplicity, which actually is not that simple at all.” Kullberg has recorded his own interpretation of Pärt’s

DREAMS AND THINKS ABOUT MUSIC ONLY

Together with the Pärnu City Orchestra Kullberg performed the compositions of 20th century classic composers. The famous cellist was invited here by conductor Kaisa Roose, who has stood in front of all professional Danish symphony orchestras and performed as a guest conductor in Sweden, Lithuania, Italy, Ireland, Costa Rica and Ecuador. Kullberg performed cello solo in Cello Concerto No 1 by Dmitri Shostakovich, which is widely considered to be technically one of the most difficult great masterpieces for cello. Before the performance in Estonia, Kullberg played the same repertoire in Lithuania with the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra. In the near future Kullberg plans to record this concerto with the reputed BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. He is currently working with the orchestra on two CD recording projects comprising two cello concertos by Shostakovich and compositions of Kaija Saariaho from Finland and Per Nørgård from Denmark. Kullbergs collaboration with Per Nørgård is a unique and close one: the composer has composed and dedicated numerous works to him. Jakob Kullberg also enjoys good working relationships with Saariaho – this collaboration is one of the reasons why Kullberg resides currently in Paris. Apart from collaboration projects with the BBC philharmonics, Kullberg is managing the career of a young Danish guitarist Jakob Bangsø, and is planning to record his works on a wider scale. In Estonia Kullberg has established a connection with Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and he is coming with Jakob Bangsø next year to Estonia to perform with the orchestra. Those concerts will also be conducted by Kaisa Roose, who directed Kullbergs performance with the Pärnu City Orchestra. Next year Kullberg intends to visit Tallinn at least two to three times, because he has already a number of plans with Estonian musicians. As for what he has experienced and witnessed in Estonia, Kullberg liked our people most. He also enjoyed the meals he was having. Before his visit Kullberg had heard the legend about the Danish flag falling from the sky over Tallinn. This happened allegedly in the first half of the 13th century, when Danish King Valdemar II held a battle in the old town of Tallinn. The event took place at the foot of Toompea hill and the place was consequently named the Danish King’s Garden. “I think most Danes know the story of our flag and its connection with Estonia,” Kullberg says. Does he dream of something else besides music? “Well...” the interpreter takes some time to ponder. “I always dream and contemplate about music. I have multiple lives inside the music, being at the same time both interpreter and composer and also a teacher,” Kullberg says. He admits that he is living his dream and therefore doesn’t fancy himself in some other situation. “My love for music is infinite and I feel that there are so many different aspects in the world of music to immerse myself in, that I sometimes don’t need anything else,” he says. And at those rare moments, when he has a feeling that music alone is not enough, Kullberg grabs a good book to read.

Danish cellist – RENOWNED ALL OVER THE WORLD

Music and studies have given Jakob Kullberg lots of opportunities to travel. He began his high school studies over 20 years ago at the Royal Academy of Music in Jutland. After graduating, he moved to the Netherlands in order to study at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, after that to Croatia to study at the Zagreb Academy of Music. Kullberg took his masters degree at the London Royal Academy of Music and then private lessons from a professor in Vienna. Then he moved back to Denmark and, as the life of a musician means constant learning, continued his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Jakob Kullberg lives currently in Paris and is one of the most active young Danish instrumentalists. He has gained international appraisal and attention for his interpretations of contemporary cello concertos. Kullberg has played solo cello with many noted orchestras, such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ensemble Intercontemporain, which is one of the leading ensembles focused on contemporary music. Kullberg has won several international solo and chamber music competitions and is twice a winner of the Danish Grammy. He gained a lot of recognition in 2013 for his CD Momentum, which was also nominated for the coveted Gramophone Award in London – one of the most prominent awards in the music business.

MUSICAL EXPERIENCES

Pärnu offers memorable musical experiences throughout the year and everyone can find here a music style that is just a music to his or her ears. Speaking of Pärnu’s music summer we just can’t get past Raimond Valgre and his captivating melodies. The traditional concert “Tribute to Valgre”, which revives the romantic atmosphere of 1930s, will be held on 9th of July. In Ammende Villa the well-known Estonian singers Jüri Pootsmann, Karl-Erik Taukar, Saara Kadak, Kaire Vilgats, Robert Linna and accordionist Henri Zibo will pay their respect to the beloved composer. One of the highlights of Estonian music summer, the international Pärnu Music Festival (Järvi Academy) will take place 09. -17.07. 2016. The Festival’s program includes highlevel concerts performed by orchestras and chamber music ensembles from Estonia and abroad. The family of conductors: Neeme Järvi and his sons Paavo and Kristjan Järvi take care of the artistic side of the concert. The array of classical music events will continue with an Organ Music Festival in the Pärnu St. Elisabeth’s Church, during which every Friday night till the 26th of August very special organ music concerts can be enjoyed. 8th to 9th of July is the time for soft saxophone tunes, for this

is, when the fourth international Pärnu saxophone music festival, the Sax. Fest 16 is held. The concert program contains a non-stop concert lasting from midday till midnight; master classes, classical music concerts in the Pärnu Town Hall and a jazz-concert in Pärnu Yacht Club open air stage. From 26th till 28th of July the town is “conquered” by blues music festival the Pärnu Blues Days. On long autumn nights, when the sky is dark blue, it’s just the right time to head to the Pärnu Concert Hall where exciting events are arranged. For instance on 25th of September the Latvian cello trio MELO-M with our own cello quartet C-JAM step on the stage with their concert program „Black Cello Sabbath“. They shall perform together evergreen pop and rock music classics with a modern twist. If you, however, are more into jazz music, then visit the Concert Hall on the 29th of September, when its stage is occupied by French jazz virtuosos Vincent Peirani and Émile Parisien. You can also enjoy thrilling jazz language on 23rd of October, when a new interpretation of George Gershwin’s opera “Porgy and Bess” will be performed. The leading roles in „Porgy & Bess in Jazz” shall be performed by Nils Landgren and Liisi Koikson. N.B. Check also out the musical menu of the ESTONIA Re-

SPORTS IS THE SOURCE OF BEAUTY

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to glide across the waves? Why not fulfil your dream about kite surfing here in Pärnu? The Pärnu Surf Club is open both for the beginners and advanced surfers. The Club offers initial training to familiarize you with the basics of kite surfing in order to let you figure out, is this sports to your liking or not. You will also see, what kind of equipment is required and learn what risks you will have to take into account when being at the sea. And for sure, you can fly the training kite board during your training sessions. When visiting the summer capital it is worthwhile to go sailing. Spend a couple of hours sailing on the picturesque Pärnu Bay or even sail to our authentic and romantic Kihnu and Ruhnu islands. Why not surprise your beloved one and go sailing under the setting sun, take your kids on a sea adventure or arrange a summer getaway for your company listening to the rhythmic sound of waves. By the way, there are even two charming golf courses near Pärnu: Pärnu Bay Golf Links and White Beach Golf are both opened from April to October and are located only 15 minutes drive away from the town’s centre. Pärnu Bay Golf Links is a links course in the true sense of the word. The course was designed by golf architect Lassi Pekka Tilander. The course is characterized by grandiose fairways and multilevel greens with bold movement. The 72-par course plays from 4500 to 6200 meters. The course also features a par-three course of five holes, a driving range and a putting green. Close to the Valgeranna village and Villa Andropoff Resort and Conference Centre there is an 18-hole golf course White Beach Golf. This links type golf course is perfect for the beginners. The driving range is open for everyone who is interested in getting acquainted with golf, but in order to play 18 holes, initial training is required. The course is built on the banks of the winding Audru river and features a number of artificial lakes. Soil excavated for the purpose is used to build artificial slanting slops and cupolas, which bring excitement to the game and are a pleasant to look at. Motor sports fans should definitely check out the calendar of the Audru racetrack, for interesting events take place there till the end of summer. For instance an international Porsche track day is held there on 5th to 6th of August. In autumn Pärnu welcomes enthusiastic runners. From 3rd to 4th of September a Two Bridges Race, which was initiated by Olympic medalist Jüri Jaanson, takes place. It’s not just a

ACTIVESPA Another way to reload your batteries is to visit the ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa's Activespa, where you can take your time to concentrate on balancing your health, body and mind. Activespa’s lessons and classes include yoga (such as hatha and yoga flow), dances and muscle training (such as BodyJam and Zumba) and classes for body and mind (Body Balance and Shindo). Active vacation has a relaxing effect, brings you joy and is a nice alternative to lying on the beach or in the spa.

race, but rather an event in support of active lifestyle, which brings the whole family to the tracks regardless of age and athletic abilities. On 23rd of October a starting pistol is fired to start the Pärnu Beach Race. The runners are going to enjoy an attractive track, which winds through beach areas, the falling leaves of the autumn, a pleasant company – all of it resulting in a bunch of good emotions. In additions to runners the kids, walkers and Nordic walkers are welcome, too. In other words, welcome are all who love the clean, crisp air, a just training load and bright colors of autumn.

EXHIBITIONS REALLY ARE WORTH VISITING!

Pärnu provides art lovers with interesting exhibitions to spend time during those cloudy afternoons. In Spring, an Estonian-Latvian joint exhibition “The Resort Fashion” was opened, which focuses on the beach wear and casual clothing. The exhibition will be opened till 31st of August and presents beach wear trends from the belle époque period in the 19th century up to the crazy nineties. The exhibition is of special interest, because the clothing is viewed not only as something to wear, but also as an eloquent historical evidence – it tells not only about the personality of the wearer, but also about the times reflecting the dominant ideology, taboos, dreams and hopes of the period. Once you have finished the funny and educating tour through the history of fashion, pop into the Museum of New Art, where an international nude art exhibition “Man and Woman” is open until 5th of September. This exhibition is extremely popular with the visitors of the town and held already for the 23rd time. Although the exhibition has each year a different subtheme, be it then the sea, expectations, dreams or even aliens, it always targets various tunes of the relationship between men and women, which drives the creation of exciting art pieces. The Pärnu Museum offers another treat for pop art lovers: until 14th of August the art of pop icon Andy Warhol is in the spotlight – his selected videos, films and installations from the collection of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Andy Warhol’s world famous 40 m2 spatial installation “Silver Clouds” is also displayed. During autumn you can visit at the Museum of New Art, the exhibition of works by a group named FREE WILL (open 7.09–23.10), the exhibition “Iranian Illustration” (7.09– 2.10) and international exhibition “2D”, which displays works of various glass artists (27.10–4.12).

LET’S GO FEST

Although our summers are short, they are the most beautiful in the world and accommodate a great number of colorful events that even several months later put a smile on your face. During two weeks in July you can spend your days from morning till late night attending the Pärnu Film Festival, which this summer celebrates its 30th anniversary. The festival that takes place from 11th to 24th of July is a true feast of films, one of the main themes of which has been from the very beginning the survival of indigenous peoples and their cultures. However, not only. The festival program also includes social interpretations of contemporary society, portraits of interesting people and human relationships as well as films about music and art. The program contains also students’, children and youth films. The dark nights of November will be enlightened by the high quality film program during the world famous PÖFF film festival, which this year will take place from 11th to 27th of November. Surfers and other lovers of winds and the sea can test their skills in kite surfing and surfing and enjoy musical performances of different bands. The Festival summer would be incomplete without good food. From 5th till 7th of August Pärnu’s vivid Supeluse Street transforms into an Alley of Tastes of Pärnu, in other words into the Festival of Pärnu’s Street Food. The festival will gather together big and little food trailers from near and afar to offer a fascinating journey to the paradise of flavors. Appetizing bites can also be enjoyed at the beginning of October (1.–9.10), when a popular Pärnu Café Week takes place. Pärnu Guild Days also offer exciting moments both for small and not so small. The event takes place from 5th to 6th of August and showcases authentic Estonian handicraft. During the days various workshops are held, and a Farmers’ Market takes place. The free entertainment program adds to the atmosphere. Exciting events unfold in the Mary Magdalene Guild, in Steiner garden and in the neighboring historical

streets of Downtown. If you plan to drive around Pärnumaa, consider visiting the Sunset Festival at Kabli Beach. The festival takes place in July and lasts for the whole four weeks inviting to relax at the marvelous Kabli beach and offering a superb selection of music, exciting encounters, enchanting sunsets and a cozy atmosphere. The program includes various concerts from jazz to folk music (performed by Taavi Peterson, RaivoTafenau and Ramuel Tafenau, string quartet Prezioso, Jäääär, Argo Vals, Koit Toome and Sarah, Teele Viira, Seitsmes Meel and Henry Laks and many others), pleasant salon nights, genuine village parties and literature and film events. The festival takes place in picturesque coastal villages of South-Pärnumaa. Driving along the Romantic Coastline takes you amongst the fresh sea air, steep and mysterious walking paths, healing dunes and pine groves, peaceful swamps, idyllic fishing villages and breathtaking sunsets. Lazy walks on lonely paradise beaches are something not to be missed. It’s not just a certain road or path – it is a journey in the whole Pärnumaa, which takes wanderers along the 250 km coastline from junipers of Varbla to the sandy beaches of Kabli and Treimani and from there up to the Kihnu island. Romantic Coastline offers something to everyone, you just name it: beaches, sea, fishing, surfing, clay modelling, nature walks, sports, exciting workshops (such as how to cook delicious fish dishes), hidden beaches – and this all can be enjoyed with your family, friends or beloved one. On 13th of August you have a possibility to experience the Midsummer Night’s Dream Pärnu way – on Supeluse Street and at the beach area the August Insomnia Festival takes place. If you feel that summer nights are too short to miss them, this spirited festival is just for you. The hustle and bustle of the Festival’s art and culture program takes over the whole romantic Downtown and winding waterfront. The menu of the Festival offers a mouthwatering bite to everyone. It includes literature, art, music, theatre and food events. Enjoy arts and enjoy life for you know how it is – there are things in the night.

Traditsiooniline kontsert „Kum-

„Porgy & Bess in Jazz“ jõuab melomaanideni Nils Landgreni ja Liisi Koiksoni esituses. Uuri lähemalt ka ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa à la carte restorani NOOT muusikalist menüüd – nii mõnigi kord saadab kolmekäigulist õhtusööki mahe kontsertelamus.

SPORT TEEB ILUSAKS

Pärnu Bay Golf Links on kõige ehedam links-tüüpi väljak, mille on kavandanud golfiarhitekt Lassi Pekka Tilander. Par-72 väljaku pikkuseks on 4500 kuni 6200 meetrit.

Suvitajate seas

menukas väljapanek toimub sel aastal juba 23. korda. Kuigi igal näitusel on kindel alateema – olgu selleks siis meri, ootused, unistused või hoopis tulnukad –, püüab see alati tabada erinevaid toone mehe ja naise suhetes, mis annavad tõuke põneva kunsti sünniks. Kuni 14. augustini ootab Pärnu muuseum külla ka popkunstifänne – rambivalguses on ikoonilise Andy Warholi videokunst, polaroidid ja installatsioonid Pittsburghi Andy Warholi muuseumi kogust. Publikuni jõuavad popkunsti isaks tituleeritud mehe rariteetsemad filmid, videod ja telesaated aastatest 1966–1987. Lisaks on eksponeeritud maailmakuulus, ca 40 ruutmeetril paiknev ruumiinstallatsioon „Hõbepilved“ („Silver Clouds“). Sügisel saab aga Uue Kunsti muuseumis uudistada kunstirühmituse VABA TAHE loomingut (7.09–23.10), teha tutvust väljapanekuga „Iraani illustratsioon“ (7.09– 2.10) ning vaadelda rahvusvaheliste klaasikunstnike töid näitusel „2D“ (27.10– 4.12).

FESTIVALIMELU

Festivalipaikadeks on maalilised rannakülad Lõuna-Pärnumaal.

22 | RESORT MENU

EESTIMAISED TAIMED HOOLITSUSTES Taimed on olnud eesti rahvameditsiinis peamised turgutajad.

Meestele on soovitatav kanepiõli massaaž. Kanep on üks iidseimaid taimi, mida on sajandeid kasvatatud vastupidavate kiudude ja õlirikaste seemnete saamiseks. Kanepil on välispidisel kasutamisel vananemisvastane toime.

with the might of ancestors

Did you know how ancient Estonians used to relax after a day or a week of hard toiling? From the very old times Estonians have given high appreciation to the efficiency of sauna, body “kneading”, and the healing effect of plants and herbs.

O

ur ancestors have known for centuries that sauna is good for your health; it is also a revered and a holy place. Today it has been proven that sauna strengthens your immune system, hot steam, which is generated by throwing water on hot stones, destroys bacteria; sweating helps the body to get rid of toxins, sauna relaxes muscles and after sauna your skin is just beautiful and smooth. Sauna has always been recognized for its healing properties and has also been used to find help in case of fatigue, depression and stress. Sauna is known as well as a place to relax and enjoy, to keep in good health and prevent diseases. Going to the sauna usually involved whisking, which has an effect of a good massage softening the skin and improving blood circulation. In the old days people used to whisk in order to relieve a great number of disorders. With regards to whisking it is essential to know how to do this and which plants are best to use for making a whisk. On the mental side the sauna is connected with multiple beliefs, traditions and customs. It has even been compared with a temple and there is a theory, according to which the Estonian

word leil (throwing water on hot stones) has meant soul or spirit – as the leil cleanses and relaxes the body and mind. Magic incantation and spells have also been a part of the sauna tradition, for instance in the region of Urvaste and other regions of South-Estonia mothers used to sing to their children when giving a leil: May your hands be light and eyes be clear, And feet run quickly free of fear, Let magpie take your pain And crow your other strains, Let black bird have all other woes, And you’ll be rid of those.

EXCITING RITUALS

ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa has built a bridge between the old and new. “We have taken the wisdom of the ancient times that still works today,” Jana Kivi, the Spa manager of the ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa says. The traditional Estonian sauna is upgraded to contemporary environment and the old time sauna effects are experienced through exciting sauna rituals. At the beginning of a sauna ritual the guests are greeted by

Spa & Sauna a sauna host (or hostess) who introduces them to the old customs and different kinds of whisks. In the hotel ESTONIA’s spa you can choose between oak, birch and juniper whisk. Whisks used in the sauna are fresh, in winter time frozen, and have kept even in midwinter their freshness and aromas. During “leil” (throwing water on hot stones) it is customary to wish your co-bathers “Jätku leili!” (May steam never end) and “Jätku tervist! (May you always be healthy) and other good wishes. After a proper “steaming” you should go to cool down in the shower or on the terrace. The host will demonstrate how to whisk to get maximum effect for your bones and muscles, or what will happen, when you start whisking from your foot soles or, for instance, from your left hand? Sauna traditions have been different in different regions of Estonia and, for instance the smoke sauna customs of the Old-Võrumaa have even been added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. After whisking it is important to thank for the sauna. At the hot stove of the sauna it is also good to get rid of your bad thoughts and wish well for yourself and all the others. Our sauna ritual contains also body peeling with herbs, the whole ritual is finished by an herbal bath. Everyone can pick an herbal mixture to liking, depending whether the preference is given to meadowsweet, lime flower or to the delightful effect and benefits of pine and spruce tips and rose hips. After the herbal bath your skin feels pleasantly soft and silky, whereas you yourself feel free of stress and relaxed. “After the sauna ritual our guests feel emotionally elevated and are extremely positive minded,” Jana Kivi remarks. People whose health can’t take high temperatures, should beware of sauna rituals. However, everyone who can go to the sauna, can also enjoy the rituals. If desired, your children, too, can have here their first sauna experience – ESTONIA offers for kids an introductory sauna ritual “My first sauna experience.”

OLD TIME ESTONIAN MASSAGE

Alongside with sauna, massage has been an ancient healing method. In Southern-Estonian language, it was named “paying back” and considered to be the best help in case of bone- and muscle ailments. Old Estonians used to lie down after coming home from field works and children crawled all over them, stamping on their spines, for instance. “And so they shook, stretched out, rocked, twisted and kneaded themselves,” the spa manager Jana Kivi knows. “Old Estonians just used what they knew and had.” The massage menu of the ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa is developed by Alar Krautmann, a teacher and a collector of Estonian traditional medicine, who has combined the elements of classical massage with old Estonian wisdom and generated a healthy type of massage, which takes into account today’s requirements and knowledge. You can find from the menu of the ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa treatments, for instance a treatment called “soonetasumine” (vein massage). It is and primeval Estonian massage, the roots of which extend perhaps several thousands of years ago. In different regions of Estonia massage was named differently. Vernacular words used for it were kneading, ironing, touching, paying, etc. The word massage is a late loan. Ancient Estonian massage had its own distinctive handwriting – it was characterized by efficient body treatment and a unique rhythm reminding that of old folk song regilaul (runo-song). Massage has been created to keep the body balanced and in

good working order, to heal both physical and mental problems. The shoulder massage is both exciting and relaxing. At first warm oat bags are placed over the shoulders and after that the warmed-up shoulder area is given a massage. “When the massage area is warmed up in advance, the effect of the massage is better and more efficient,” Jana Kivi explains. Recommended for men is the hemp oil massage. Hemp is one of the most ancient plants, which has been grown for centuries to get durable fiber and oil-rich seeds. Externally used hemp has an anti-aging effect. Due to the vitamins and oils found in hemp seeds, hemp is perfect for moisturizing skin and relieves muscular tensions that result of strenuous sports activities. Spa visitors are very fond of our Estonian power tree body treatment, during which you can enjoy the healing effect of power whisks, which also cleanse your energy. At the beginning of the treatment the body is warmed up by dry power whisking, which has also a healing effect. This is followed by a warming massage, done through a linen and including rocking, swaying and napping. Once the mind is calmed down, the body is covered with hemp and carrot oil. After being massaged with open massage movements with a peeling glove you will feel excellent, your skin will be silky soft and you will be very relaxed and have a good night’s sleep. To complement the treatment, the massage is finished up with a calming head massage. The empowering herbal cup massage is done with warm herbal cups using traditional old Estonian massage techniques. Cups filled with Estonian herbs and nourishing vegetable oils result in maximum relaxation of muscle and nervous tensions, empower your mind and feelings. Massage stimulates blood circulation, strengthens muscles, calms mind and feelings and eliminates stress. Herbs for this massage are selected according to the seasons, the massage is good for relieving of painful joints, stomach problems, colds, ulcers, cramps, nervousness, infections, pains, insomnia, or skin problems. It is also good after sunbathing.

ESTONIAN HERBS USED IN TREATMENTS Herbs have been the principal remedies in Estonian traditional medicine. Herbs were cooked into a tea or ointments, herbs were soaked, used for wrapping and in many other ways. Herbs used as main components in the treatments of the ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa are all Nordic and grow in Estonian fields and forests – be it a cornflower, meadowsweet, lime flower or rose plant. The herbs and plants we use have a very natural and pleasant scent. The scent of hemp oil is delicious and delicate, the scent of honey oil reminds of honey. ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa treatments use also a lot of peat, which is deposited in Estonia, and Estonian honey or honey products, such as honey balls, made of honey and linseed oil, and beeswax.

Imeline hoolitseja

Eestimaa rabadest Tekst: MARET EINMANN Fotod: ANU HAMMER, SHUTTERSTOCK

Aeg on turvas taasavastada!

S

TERVISLIK TURVAS

Turbaprotseduuril laienevad soojuse mõjul nahas veresooned, selle tulemusel on vereringlus kiirem. Erinevad turbas sisalduvad ühendid imenduvad läbi naha ja mõjutavad mitmesuguseid protsesse. Balneoloogilisel turbal on põletikuvastane, mikroobide, viiruste ja seentevastane toime. Turbas olev humiinaine

SIIDISE NAHA NIMEL

Eriti soovitatakse turvast kasutada nahamurede korral. Pikemaajalisel kasutamisel suureneb naha niiskus- ja rasusisaldus. Turbamaskid aitavad leevendada sügelust, alandavad põle-

Eesti ökoloogiliselt puhas ja spaahoolitsustes kasutamiseks sobiv peenestatud balneoloogiline turvas sisaldab inimorganismile kasulikke bioaktiivseid humiinaineid väga suurel määral – isegi kuni 60% ulatuses. Eesti turba balneoloogilise kasutamise uuringud algasid 2005. aastal, mil määrati nende bioaktiivsete ainete ehk humiinainete sisaldused.

Maailmas on turvast kasutatud juba iidsetel aegadel, teaduslikumalt on sellele lähenetud viimased 200 aastat.

tikku, vistrikud taanduvad kiiremini. Turbal on isegi kaalu langetavaid omadusi.

Turbas olevad aktiivained aitavad viia mees leiduvad head komponendid sügavamale nahapinda. Mesi pehmendab ja toidab nahka, kuna sisaldab erinevaid mikroelemente, vitamiine,

aminohappeid jms.

Viirushaiguste ennetuses takistab humiinaine viiruse seostumist rakuga. Stressi ja unetuse korral toovad turbaprotseduurid rahuliku une ja täieliku lõõgastuse.

Miraculous caregiver from Estonian bogs Written by: MARET EINMANN Photos: ANU HAMMER, SHUTTERSTOCK

Did you know that the peat of Estonia’s heavenly, tranquil and beautiful bogs has been from the ancient times in the service of beauty and health? The time has come to rediscover the secrets of peat.

Treatment

T

he peat that is suitable for spa treatments, i.e the balneological peat, is used to treat and relieve a variety of health problems starting from joint and muscle disorders through improving the condition of skin and even for the purpose of reducing the cellulite. The healing effect of peat has been proven scientifically and is based on studies of peat’s physical and chemical properties. Peat’s physical impact is related to temperature and the chemical effect to various bioactive substances.

HEALTHY PEAT

During peat treatment warm temperature extends skin’s blood vessels, which in turn accelerates blood circulation. Various compounds that can be found in peat are absorbed through the skin, having an effect on different processes in the body. Balneological peat has an anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antiviral and antifungal effect. Peat contains humic substance that is capable of producing and binding activated free oxygen radicals. “This important feature facilitates healing of wounds and even helps to destroy cancer cells,” Monika Übner, the environmental scientist, who studies natural bioactive compounds, explains. She has written her doctoral thesis on the subject on humic substances. Several scientific studies have proven the useful properties of peat: its biochemical effects have been verified both on cell level and as a result of medical tests performed on humans. Other biologically active compounds in peat are magnesium, manganese, iron and sulfur compounds, although the content of those is not very high.

FOR THE SILKY AND SMOOTH SKIN

Peat is considered to be particularly useful in case of skin disorders. Prolonged use increases the moisture and fat content of the skin. Peat masks relieve itching, reduce inflammation and help to get rid of pimples. Peat also reduces redness and has a peeling effect. Monika Übner explains, that the acidity of peat is

Peat can be used for treatment of all patients, who don’t have any contraindications such as fever, high blood pressure, acute inflammations, blood disorders; or when skin is not too thin, fragile or sensitive to temperature. Peat is also contraindicated for women, who are pregnant, and in a case when a patient has an allergy of a specific compound present in the peat. Peat has even weight losing effects. “Peat alone does not lose weight,” admits Monika Übner, “you also have to change your diet and physical activity. However, a study has been published in scientific literature, in which a conclusion may be found, that two week peat and mineral water procedures enable to reduce body mass index, the thickness of hypodermic fat (cellulite), it also improves skin elasticity and removes excess water from the body mass index,” Monika Übner adds.

ENJOYABLE PEAT TREATMENTS

Efficient peat has found its way into the treatment menu of the ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa. Peat and honey body treatment helps to fight cellulite. The joint effect of peat, honey and warmth speeds up metabolism, which in turn helps to eliminate

Estonian granulated balneological peat is ecologically clean and good for spa treatments and therapies. It contains a large amount - even up to 60% of bioactive humic substances that are beneficial for human body. The studies of balneological use of Estonian peat started in 2005, when the content of bioactive substances, also called humic substances, in peat was determined. Based on these studies the peat deposit containing peat with highest content of humid substances was selected. The study focused primarily on prevention of health disorders, after the study several companies manufacturing organic cosmetic products started to use peat in the development of their products. Peat has been used for health improvement for ages, but only during the past 200 years has it been dealt with in a more scientific way.

Jooga

“I

Õige hetk ongi just praegu.

ERINEV TEEKOND JOOGANI

Inimestel, kes astuvad sisse joogasaali uksest, on erinevad ootused ja häälestus: see võib olla teadlik samm vaimsel teekonnal, kuid ka huvi eelkõige joogaharjutuste vastu. „Me võime joogat praktiseerima hakata ükskõik millisest lähtekohast vaadates,“ märgib Tiina Sarapuu. „Jooga on eelkõige teekond, mis on alati väga individuaalne. Iga muutus on jooga.

ESIMEST KORDA JOOGASSE

Aktiivspaas on loodud suurepärased võimalused tegeleda teadlikult tervise, keha ja meele tasakaalustamisega. Joogatrennide nimistust võib leida näiteks vinyasa flow jooga, hatha-jooga, yin-jooga, yoga nidra, yogaflow, flyhigh yoga. Mille järgi otsustada, mis sobib just mulle? Seda on oluline teada, sest me ju areneme läbi praktiseerimise.

TULE JOOGASSE! Tule trenni mugavate riietega, mis võiksid olla pigem puuvillased ja liibuvamad ega takistaks liikumist. Ära söö enne tundi kõhtu täis, söömisest võiks olla möödunud kaks tundi. Tunnid toimuvad paljajalu, matid on treeningusaalis olemas.

Võib-olla saab just ühest-kahest puhkuse ajal külastatud tunnist elu muutva teekonna algus.“ Enne tundi on kasulik lugeda joogastiilide kirjeldusi spaa kodulehel. „Kartma ei pea midagi!“ julgustab Tiina. „Joogatund pole kindlasti võistlus, kes on ilusam, osavam või painduvam.“ Kui inimesel on mõni tervisemure, peaks õpetajat sellest enne tunni algust teavitama.

JOOGA MUUDAB ELU

Jooga mõjust inimese vaimsele ja füüsilise tervisele on kirjutatud lugematul hulgal artikleid, jooga kasulikkust on tõestatud teadusuuringutega. Jooga mõistele on eri seletusi, kuid kõige sagedamini tõlgitakse seda „ühenduseks“. Jooga on elustiil. Jooga on rõõm, uue avastamine, enda avastamine, areng.“ Aktiivspaa pühendunud tundide juhendajad on sulle toeks sellel teekonnal. Ole vaid avatud uuele kogemusele!

ÄRA HÄBENE MIDAGI

2|

AVA OMA SÜDA JA ÕPI HINGAMA

3|

SINU TUND ON SINU TUND

4|

SINU KEHA ON KÕIGE ILUSAM TÖÖVAHEND, MIS SUL ON

5|

IGA PÄEV ON ERINEV

Sinu tund on sinu tund.

Yoga WELCOME TO YOGA CLASSES! Wear comfortable clothes, preferably skin tight and made of cotton. Classes are conducted barefoot, mats are provided by Activespa. Keep your mind open and be ready to accept new experiences. Inform the instructor, if it is your first class or you have some health problems.

5 Tips for Every Yoga Beginner 1|

YOU HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR

2|

YOU WILL OPEN YOUR HEART AND LEARN TO BREATHE

Your outfit. How deep you can go into a pose (or if you can’t get into a pose). The cellulite on your thighs... No one really cares. Push past your fears. Take the class and allow yourself to focus on what really matters: your breath, your intention, and your connection with yourself. You have nothing to be afraid of.

If you came with the purpose of opening your heart, you will. You may even discover that your heart can open up more than you ever thought it could. This happens through the connection of breath and movement. Here, you slow down and learn to practice more self-kindness. And once you’ve practiced long enough, you’ll discover that your newfound sense of calmness and kindness radiates from the inside out.

3|

YOUR PRACTICE IS YOUR PRACTICE

4|

YOUR BODY IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL INSTRUMENT YOU HAVE

You don’t need to be in full-on headstands or splits to be a yogi. As long as you’re in the room—breathing—you are doing yoga. Your practice is your practice. There’s no need or point in comparing yourself to anyone in the room. Yoga is about your connection with yourself and your breath.

Whether you have a pear, apple, or hourglass shape, or you’re slender or muscular—it doesn’t matter. Yoga is for all body types. Your body is the most beautiful and valuable instrument you have. Yoga will allow you to see this.

5|

EACH DAY WILL BE DIFFERENT

We all have our good days and bad days and inbetween days. And as human beings, we feel differently— physically and emotionally—each and every day. If you can’t do something in one class that you did in another class, understand that’s totally normal. Don’t beat yourself up about it. Have fun with it. When you go in to yoga with these five things in mind, you can’t have a bad practice.

am I heading for? Our rushing way of life, doing too many things at the same time, anxiety, stress, tensions, dissatisfaction - all these put together can lead sooner or later to health problems.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO DISCOVER YOGA

People come to yoga classes with different expectations and anticipations: this may be a conscious step on their mental journey, but it may also be just an interest in yoga exercises. “We can start practicing yoga from any starting point,” Tiina Sarapuu underlines. “Above all yoga is a journey, which is always very individual. Every change is a yoga. Yoga is not just physical exercises. It is also meditation and breathing - the way each person gets there is certainly special and unique. Yoga is like life. When you trust it, believe in it, then you find your own truth and the right path,” Tiina explains. She likes the idea, that yoga is not just trying to touch your toes, but rather every step on the way. “Yoga helps to create a condition on presence – you feel being “present” in what you are doing, present in the moment. Yoga is a growing trend in the whole world, because the hectic pace of our modern life makes us search balance and peace and for that purpose practicing yoga is very good. When you practice yoga, you can soon notice changes in your way of thinking and in your physical development.”

FIRST YOGA CLASS

In Activespa you’ll find great possibilities to enhance your health and balance your body and mind. The menu of yoga classes contains vinyasa flow yoga, hatha yoga, yin yoga, yoga nidra, yogaflow, flyhigh yoga. How do decide what’s best for me? Tiina Sarapuu recommends to be curious. “In yoga, as in

Yoga TIINA’S JOURNEY TO YOGA My journey to find yoga has been a long and curved one, but on the hindsight, so very natural. One thing led to the other. At first it was just an interest towards yoga, a wish to experience something new, to develop and not just physically. I am still on the journey and it is an exciting one. Yoga is an endless development with its rises and falls, it makes you laugh and cry and just breathe. For me yoga is a journey to balance, to notice changes, to reach deeper. Yoga has always taken me further in life, it has brought me a lot of new and warm encounters and I have met so many great people.

life itself, you should be ready to experiment and to try. That way you find your path and the right practice.” According to Tiina Sarapuu, it’s hard to tell, what suits you best, based just on the first visit. Some guests find that the physical side is more difficult, for the others the mental aspect and concentration are more complicated. “You have to trust your instincts and be less serious about life and yoga. Every yoga class makes you stronger and takes you one step further. It is important to understand, for we all develop through practice. You have to give yourself some time and be patient – eventually you’ll reach there.”

NEW BEGINNING DURING HOLIDAY

Usually guests stay at the hotel just for a couple of nights and attend the class for one or two times. Aren’t you afraid that someone can’t manage or gets hurt? “You can start yoga practices during a holiday and that is even recommended,” Tiina Sarapuu suggests. “On vacation the mind is open and body relaxed and it is easier to adopt something new. Maybe just those one or two classes during a holiday are the first steps on a life-changing journey.” Before starting yoga, it would be useful to read the descriptions of various yoga styles on the website of the spa. “Don’t be afraid of anything,” Tiina encourages. “Yoga is not a rivalry for being the most beautiful, skillful or supple.” If you have some kind of health problem, you should inform the instructor before the class.

YOGA CHANGES YOUR LIFE

Maybe just those one or two classes during a holiday are first steps on a life-changing journey.

Numerous articles have been written on yoga’s impact on our mental and physical health, the usefulness of yoga has been proven scientifically. Concept of yoga has been interpreted in may ways, but most often it is translated as a “connection”. Yoga is a lifestyle. But what if someone feels that is not yet quite ready for it and wants to deal with the physical side only? Tiina explains that yoga changes anyway practicer’s lifestyle and way of thinking. “Physical side has always an impact on us, and thus physical practices shall change the way we think and bring often along changes in our diet, physical activities and the ways we spend our leisure moments. Yoga practices change life and lifestyle, the changes are not external only, driving us towards development and deeper understanding of ourselves and the life. Yoga is all about joy, discovering something new, discovering yourself, development.” The devoted yoga instructors of Activespa support you on this journey. Be open to new experiences!

PART TATRAGA, BISKVIIT KISSELLIGA

Populaarseks roaks on restoranis NOOT algusest peale olnud pardifilee, mille lisandiks pakutakse tatart.

IGA ROOG ON KUNSTITEOS

Seenesupp, mis iseenesest on tagasihoidliku välimusega, serveeritakse krõbedaks küpsetatud riisitainast kaane all. Omajagu show’d kuulub ka peedisupi juurde: kõigepealt tuuakse suitsuga täidetud klaaskupli all lauale taldrik tahkete koostisosadega, siis eemaldatakse kuppel, võimaldades kliendil nautida hõrku suitsuaroomi, seejärel valab ettekandja taldrikule puljongi.

Koos foie gras’ga praetult on see pardifileele eriliselt hõrguks lisandiks.“

andnud. Järjest paremini on hakanud edenema koostöö kohalike talunikega, kellelt peakokk ostab värskeid ürte, kurke, tomateid.

R

Tunnustuseks kauaaegse tegevuse eest Eesti toidukultuuri arendamisel on ta välja teeninud toidumaailmas kõrgelt hinnatud rahvusvahelise Cordon Bleu auraha, mida Eestis on välja antud vaid kaheksa.

When we ask, whether the name of the restaurant NOOT refers to music (noot = note) of fishing (noot = also a fishing net), the answer of Rudolf Visnapuu, chef of the restaurant, is diplomatic. According to him, it is related to both. Association with music indicates the glamour and glitter of the restaurant, reference to fishing reminds of the fact that the sea is just a few hundred meters away and the menu always contains dishes made of local fish.

O

n the 1st of July 2016 the ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa together with restaurant NOOT celebrate their first anniversary. As the hotel is named Estonia and the interior design of the restaurant is based on national motifs, the menu of the restaurant is also Estonian. The majority of ingredients used are of domestic origin and the dishes are based on local food traditions - however, the chef Rudolf Visnapuu interprets the meaning of Estonian origin and roots in his own way, modifying old recipes with new technologies and pushing the boundaries of what is considered to be Estonian. “In a country that is as tiny as Estonia, it is hard to determine, what can be considered truly authentic,” contemplates the chef as we sit in the restaurant. Our food culture has been throughout the ages influenced both by our neighbors and by invaders from different countries. The biggest impact has been left by Germany. There is also a lot of Russian influence, for example, we have started to consider solyanka and borsch, the two “big” Russian soups, almost our own.

DUCK BREAST WITH BUCKWHEAT, BISCUIT WITH KISSEL

Duck breast with a buckwheat accompaniment has been from the very beginning one of the most popular dishes in the restaurant NOOT. Buckwheat is often considered to be rather a Russian dish than Estonian. Chef Visnapuu disagrees: Buchwheat has always been grown in Estonia and Estonians eat a lot of it. When seared with foie gras it is an unusually delicious accompaniment to duck breast.“ combinations, this gives me a joy of discovery,” he explains his choices. In order to create his dishes, Rudolf Visnapuu has thoroughly examined old Estonian recipes, but not with the intention of copying them. He wants to modify old recipes in a contemporary key, harmonizing these with today’s flavors and possibilities and bringing into the dishes more excitement, a twist perhaps. For instance, one of the most popular summer desserts, the Nostalgia dessert, was inspired by the traditional cream roll. The ingredients are more or less the same, but in the case of cream roll, the sponge is rolled up, whereas in case of Nostalgia dessert, it is cut into squares, covered with quark and served with kissel.

EVERY DISH AS A PIECE OF ART

The food doesn’t have to be complex, but it should be served with a small performance or some kind of twist. For instance, in case of nostalgia dessert the kissel is poured over the sponge at the presence of the customer. Mushroom soup, which in itself is a modest looking dish, is served under a cover made of crispy rice dough. Rudolf Visnapuu is well aware, that we eat not only

“Our food culture has been throughout the ages influenced both by our neighbors and by invaders from different countries.“

with our mouth but also with our eyes, and aims to make every dish into a piece of art. Therefore, he never agrees to halve his servings: the composition is a whole and shouldn’t be broken. If guests insist on a sharing a portion, extra plates are taken to the table, so that guests can share the dish themselves, incomplete dishes are never served. “The customer is a king, but chef always has to have the last word,” Rudolf grins from the kitchen. Beetroot soup is likewise served with a show: first a soup bowl, containing solid ingredients only and placed under a smoke filled glass cupola, is served, then the cupola is removed, allowing guests to enjoy the delicious smoke aroma and only after the broth is poured into the bowl by the waiter. Restaurant’s beet-root soup is inspired by Russian borsch, which through the influence of Russian cuisine has become very popular in Estonia, but Rudolf Visnapuu has uplifted this traditional dish completely. Apart from smoked salmon and seafood, the beet-root soup also contains bacon and celery dumplings. And why not serve meat and fish together in one dish, as the Spanish do in their paella? Restaurant NOOT uses mostly domestic raw materials and ingredients, but as Estonia is a Nordic country, where harvesting and picking can be done only once a year, fresh vegetables and fruits have to be imported in winter time. with local farmers is expanding, the chef purchases fresh herbs, cucumbers and tomatoes from them. Local fish is not a problem either. The problem is rather in amounts – fishermen would like to sell much more than the restaurant needs. While playing with flavors and techniques and developing domestic cuisine, Rudolf Visnapuu hasn’t yet forgotten his old love – the molecular gastronomy. He was one of the first to start experimenting with it in Estonia and you can see some indications of this in the menu on restaurant NOOT – such as a small amount of lemon caviar giving a little punch to the trio of three fishes or a bright colored beetroot caviar and chicken fillet complementing a fresh salad – all untraditional, but delicious and beautiful looking. The first year has proven, that the food Visnapuu serves is to his customers’ liking. It is a worldwide trend that instead of dining at the hotel, the guests have a dinner for a change rather in some other local restaurant. In case of restaurant NOOT, however, this is not a problem. When the hotel is full, the restaurant is full as well: the guests of ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa like to have their dinner in the hotel restaurant. It is also characteristic of a small town like Pärnu: hotel restaurants also have to fulfill the role of fine dining restaurant. Beyond any doubt it is also a recognition to the work of Rudolf Visnapuu, whose culinary creations are loved and appreciated.

FROM THE CARGO SHIP GALLEY TO ROYAL HEIGHTS

A

nother Pärnu related project of Rudolf Visnapuu besides restaurant NOOT is the launching of the Pärnu Restaurant Week. „Together with chef Vladimir Upeniek, who also moved to Pärnu from Tallinn, we figured that we should find a way to enliven Pärnu’s restaurant life,“ he recalls how the idea was born. The first restaurant week was held last spring and it was a great success. As the restaurant NOOT was at that time not yet opened, a pop-up restaurant with magnificent panoramic view on the 8th floor of another hotel belonging to the ESTONIA Spa Hotels Group, the ESTONIA Medical Spa & Hotel, was opened for the event. This year the number of participants is even bigger. Statistics show, that Pärnu Restaurant Week has even more visitors than the Tallinn Restaurant Week. “We’ve beaten Tallinn,” is Visnapuu pleased. Opening of a first class restaurant NOOT and launching of restaurant week are the latest gems in Rudolf Visnapuu’s cooking career, that has lasted 20 years. And why wouldn’t everything he touches turn into gold? Rudolf Visnapuu is a man of great experience: he has headed for five years the Association of Estonian Chefs, organized for 15 years’ competitions for cooks and for 10 years’ competitions for young cooks. He has also gained experience in an impressive array of restaurants including the former Saku Rock Hotel (now called Tallinn Seaport Hotel), restaurant Mannerheim, Primavera of the hotel Central (now called Park Inn), Dominic and last but not least restaurant Kolm Õde, where he had the honor to cook for Queen Elisabeth II. The Queen was very satisfied. “From all the superstars I have had an honor and opportunity to cater for, the

Queen was the most pleasant one,” the chef says with a little smirk. However, as many other cooks, Rudolf Visnapuu started his career on a freighter. When he graduated from the cook school in 1992, Estonia had more ships than restaurants and thus it was only natural to go and work with the marine. Romance, faraway countries... Only after he had seen his share of the world and only after he had created a family, Visnapuu decided to settle down. Not suspecting that his adventures, culinary at this time, were only beginning. In the view of the more than modest conditions of that time – the exotic being represented by canned pineapple and spices being limited to salt and pepper only – we can say that during the past few decades Visnapuu alongside with the development of Estonian gastronomy as a whole has travelled a journey that could be compared with a trip from the Earth to the Moon. Rudolf Visnapuu has been granted for his long lasting accomplishments in developing the Estonian food culture with one of the most prestigious culinary awards, the international Cordon Blue medal, which in Estonia has been given to eight chefs only.

Egert Kamenik

BREAKING THE ROUTINE Do you believe that you have used all possibilities to strengthen the team spirit and motivate your employees? It pays off to break the routine every now and then. What if you would arrange your meetings, seminars, conferences and events in a totally new manner: sitting or lying down, in a sauna or in a kitchen, on the water or under the water? For instance, in the ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa you can book an underwater photographer, who captures vivid images of your team under the water. If desired, we can stage an underwater work meeting at the bottom of the pool and take memorable photos of the event. Konverentside puhul on oluline erineva suurusega ruumide valik, tänapäevased tehnilised vahendid ja kiire internetiühendus, samuti on tähtsad hea ventilatsioon ja valgustus ning loomulikult personal, kes on valmis koostööks. Mitte vähem olulised pole vaba aja veetmise võimalused pärast tegusat konverentsipäeva. ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa konverentsikeskuses on palju erinevaid konverentsiruume üksteise lähedal − see lihtsustab grupitööde juhtimist.

Conference Trust and intention to return Project Manager of Pärnu Conferences, Mrs. Silja Mägi, appreciates the high quality of the services of the conference center of the ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa, their flexibility in collaboration and profound professionalism. Last August the Pärnu Conferences arranged together with the Best Marketing the Balticbest 2015 pan-Baltic marketing festival in this brand new freshly opened conference center for the first time. For ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa it was their first full-house event. “During the first year we have arranged four conferences there.” Silja Mägi notes. “Our aim is to offer the participants not only an a enthralling program but also smooth organization and pleasant environment. This often requires out of the box thinking and unconventional solutions and is a challenge both for the organizer and the venue of the event. “With the conference center of the stonia Resort Hotel & Spa we have managed to handle all kinds of situations,” Silja Mägi affirms. Silja Mägi underlines the big advantage of the Pärnu ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa – it is an all-in-one center of full range on services - in addition to arranging a two day conference for couple of hundred guests, it provides accommodation, delicious catering, free parking and excellent relaxation in ths spa and sauna center. And it is brand new and good-looking „Our collaboration during the year has covered all the services provided by the ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa – we have arranged multiple day conferences with all available servises – up to yoga classes and spa treatments. My trust and intention to return is first and foremost driven by the willingness of the personnel of the conference center to think along the same lines, to find mutually acceptable solutions and their helpfulness.

The ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa has a number of different size conference rooms close to each other - this makes managing the work in groups and teams so much easier. The conference center of the ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa is also outstanding for its excellent service level. We had a very good working relationship with the senior receptionist Aldo Rebane, who is truly professional in everything he is doing – whatever we required, he solved quickly, he could anticipate our wishes and was always there for us.

SOE KOHT kuni 80 kraadi

WARM SPOT Up to 80 degrees Celsius

The warm spot is a sauna with hot and dry air, where the temperature is warmed up to 80 degrees Celsius. This sauna makes you properly sweat whilst steam, produced by throwing water on the hot stones, makes the experience enjoyable and relaxing. The ultimate effect of sauna is in alternate exposure to hot and cold - we therefore recommend to take a cold shower after each session in the sauna. Sauna boosts your metabolism and detoxifies your body.

Spa & Sauna KUUM KOHT

kuni 100 kraadi

Kuum koht on kuuma ja kuiva õhuga traditsiooniline Soome saun, kus temperatuur võib tõusta kuni 100 °C-ni. See on koht, kus saab selja küüru tõmmata ja naabrimehega võidu leili visata.

HOT SPOT

Up to 100 degrees Celsius The hot spot is a traditional Finnish sauna with hot and dry air, where the temperature may rise up to 100 degrees Celsius. This is the place to bury your head between your shoulders and compete with your neighbor in throwing water on the hot stones.

VIHASAUN

WHISK SAUNA

kuni 100 kraadi

Up to 100 degrees Celsius

In the whisk sauna the true whiskers and sauna gourmands can enjoy exciting Estonian sauna rituals and relaxing herbal baths.

SAUNA RITUALS Sauna rituals are carried out under the guidance of a sauna host or a sauna hostess, who knows exactly, how and why old Estonians used to go to saunas. They advise which whisk is best for you, which herbs should be used for the bath and which are the best mixtures for facial masks and body wraps. Traditional sauna incantations help you to forget your worries and prepare you for new challenges.

ÜRDIVANNID Ürdivannis kasutame eelkõige värskeid kodumaiseid taimi. Teraapia ergutab vereringet, rahustab ja vabastab pingetest. Ürdivann on sobiv spaakülastuse lõpus – nii säilib ürtide mõju nahale kauem.

HERBAL BATHS For herbal baths we use primarily fresh domestic herbs. The therapy stimulates blood circulation, relaxes, and relieves stress. We recommend taking an herbal bath at the end of your spa visit, that way the herbs have a long lasting effect on your skin.

LÕHNASAUN

RÕÕMU SAUN

36–40 kraadi

JOY SAUNA

36–40 degrees Celsius

The low temperature in the Joy sauna (also called sanarium) allows you to enjoy the sauna up to 20 minutes. Warm benches are wonderful to lie on and enjoy the sauna with your whole family. This sauna is particularly suitable for children, elderly people, and for anyone, who can't take high temperatures.

AROMA SAUNA

55–65 kraadi

55–65 degrees Celsius

Aroma sauna strengthens the body with the vapors of natural essential oils of various plants and herbs. Aroma sauna has a positive impact on your spirits, it alleviates various diseases, stimulates metabolism and strengthens the immune system. Sauna relaxes and releases tensions in your body. The low temperature of the sauna makes it also perfect for children and elderly.

Spa & Saun AURUSAUN

45 kraadi

STEAM SAUNA

45 degrees Celsius

Steam sauna is a true fountain of youth - it has relaxing and healing effect on your body. Due to heat and high level of humidity, the steam sauna is useful in case of many health problems such as cold, cough, hoarseness, chronic rheumatic problems, bronchial asthma, bronchitis, stiffness of joints and joint pains. Steaming is a great way of cleansing your skin thoroughly. It is the easiest and most convenient way to get rid of toxins accumulated in your body, because steam opens up pores and millions of sweat glands of your skin through which residual substances and toxins are removed from the body. Stimulation of blood supply and boosted metabolism will greatly improve the texture, elasticity, tone and complexion of your skin.

SUITSUSAUN

SMOKE SAUNA

70–80 kraadi

70–80 degrees Celsius

Traditsioonilisel suitsusaunal pole korstnat. Saunaruumis on suur kerisega ahi, mida köetakse mitu tundi. Kasutusel olevad suitsusaunad on suuremas osas Eestis juba haruldased.

The traditional smoke sauna is built without a chimney. It has a particularly large stove, which is topped with stones. The stove is heated for several hours. The sauna is heated both by the stove and the smoke that fills the room. When the sauna is sufficiently hot, the smoke is ventilated out, the room is aired and sauna is ready to enjoy. Each smoke sauna has its own unique character, which is understood only by its owner. Not too long ago, all saunas in Estonia have been smoke saunas. The first saunas with chimneys were built about a hundred years ago, and nowadays most of the saunas are the so-called clean saunas. In modern Estonia smoke saunas have already become a rarity. The majority of the traditional smoke saunas that are still in use are located in Southeastern Estonia, mostly in Võrumaa and Setomaa. Going to the smoke sauna is connected with certain traditions and beliefs, that are passed on from one generation to another. You have to know how to heat the sauna and how to relax in it. When you heat the sauna properly, there will be no smoke and fumes, the air is fresh and the steam, evaporating when you throw water onto the hot stones, doesn’t burn. If you respect the sauna traditions and take your time to enjoy it, the sauna gives you health and strength. In order to understand how our smoke sauna differs from other saunas, you have to pay a visit!

Spa & Sauna SOOLASAUN

SALT SAUNA

40–45 kraadi

40–45 degrees Celsius

In folk medicine salt is known for its extraordinary healing properties. Rubbing your skin with salt has a peeling effect and makes your skin silky smooth. Inhalation of salty air is healthy for your respiratory track. Salt sauna is the mildest type of sauna, it is ultimately refreshing and relieves problems related to respiratory diseases. We recommend to visit the salt sauna after the steam sauna or the hot spot. In the salt sauna, natural sea salt is rubbed onto your skin with massaging movements. The salt is left on for 5-10 minutes, after which it is rinsed off in the shower.
