Great People Make Favorite Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place. ◆
July Staff Member of the Month Jared Hedrick, Server We congratulate Jared on being named July Staff Member of the Month! Jared has been a key ingredient to the Club's Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. He has a strong passion for the Hospitality and Food & Beverage industry. When he's not at the Club, he's in school studying Culinary Arts or working at his family's restaurant in Pennsylvania. He is consistently one of our strongest servers and always commits to the training of our new staff members. We are very grateful to have Jared as a part of our Food & Beverage Team.
Exceptional Leadership Award Shaun Skeen, Restaurant Chef We congratulate Shaun for receiving the Exceptional Leadership Award! Since his promotion to the role, the restaurant has not missed a beat! Despite the staff shortage due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Shaun shows his leadership skills through his persistence and commitment to the Club, even working in the pantry alone and producing his clerical work in a timely fashion. Additionally, he exhibits excellent composure when delivering food from the kitchen to our members and guests. It is easy to see why Shaun is a very well-respected staff member at the Club!
Simple Truth Award Justin Gladhill, West Course Superintendent Mark Jones, West Course Assistant Superintendent We congratulate our West Course Superintendent Justin and West Course Assistant Superintendent Mark for receiving the Simple Truth Award! One day following thunderstorms and lighting, Justin and Mark inspected the West Course to survey the property and assess any damage. On the way back to the Grounds Maintenance facility, they noticed a tree down on Jenifer Road. They grabbed two chainsaws and the appropriate safety gear without hesitation and returned to the road where a county police officer met them. Justin and Mark offered to clear the tree from the road, much to the officer’s delight. The officer then blocked the road and turned on his lights, allowing Justin and Mark to safely remove the tree, permitting traffic to proceed safely around the community. Justin and Mark’s quick action to help following the disruptive storm showed that they are invaluable assets to BCC and the surrounding community! 1

THE KEY TO AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY LIFESTYLE By BCC Health, Wellness, & Life Coach Vanessa O’Brey
Everyone who has had a sore throat, rash, hives, or a sprained ankle knows about inflammation. Those are normal appropriate responses of our defense system to infection or trauma. We need inflammation to survive. The trouble occurs when that defense system runs out of control. Most people are familiar with overactive immune responses and too much inflammation in common conditions like allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune disease, or asthma. But few people know that hidden inflammation can be at the root of all chronic illnesses: heart disease, obesity, diabetes, dementia, depression, and cancer—to name a few. We may feel healthy, but if this inflammation is raging inside of us, then we have a problem. So what is the best way to control inflammation while we’re still upstream? First, identify the triggers and causes of inflammation and then help the body’s natural immune balance reset by providing the right conditions for it to thrive. Unfortunately, everyone is treating the downstream effects of inflammation instead of addressing the cause: multiple problems linked together by inflammation. Check out our helpful tips on how to lead an anti-inflammatory lifestyle! ◆
Lifestyle Tips
1. Eat a whole food, high fiber, plan t-based diet which is inherently anti-inflammator y 2. Eat healthy fats from olive oil, nuts , avocados, and Omega-3 fats from small fish like sardines, herring, sable, and wild salmon 3. Exercise 4. Learn to actively relax to engage your vagus nerve, the powerful nerve that relaxes your whole body and lowers inflammation, by doing yoga, meditation, deep breathing, or even taking a hot bath 5. If you have food allergies, find out what they are and stop eating those foods

GOLF
How Golf Changed My Life By Danny Murphy, PGA, Junior Golf Director
In the summer of 2006, my family moved to Timonium so I could attend The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland for 6th grade. Little did I know, the property just beyond my new house would forever change my life. For those of you who do not know, I moved into the house just behind the tee box of hole 17 on the East Course. I didn’t play golf growing up and had no interest in playing, but every day during the summer, I would look outside my window and see the most beautiful view of the East Course. I became more and more curious about golf as time went by living there. One day as my dad was mowing the lawn, a man approached him. It was BCC’s General Manager at the time, Michael Stott. He let my dad know that he’s seen a young man playing lacrosse in the backyard and that BCC has a growing Caddie Program. My father grew up as a caddie and valued the lessons it taught him, so not too long after that, I was being trained to be a caddie at Baltimore Country Club.

Boys' Latin Varsity Golf Team—2012
It took me about a year of caddying until I wanted to get my own set of clubs, but it was because of the members that made me enjoy golf and want to pursue it. I’ll never forget some of my first loops with Joe Fields, Jim Groschan, Frank Palmer, and John Leahy, Jr., to name a few of the many members who taught me course etiquette and rules of the game. I also cannot forget my fellow BL Lakers, Coach Shriver, Guy Gemmill, and Richie Taylor, who all helped me socialize and feel at home on the course. Golf now became a sport I could not wait to learn and enjoy playing. On my 13th birthday, I received my own set of clubs and I never looked back since. From that first day, I would hit balls at Pine Ridge all day and night during the summer. The Golf Channel would always be on at home and I read books about golf at night. Golf started to become my life, and I was in heaven living right behind one of the most beautiful views of Five Farms.
I soon started playing more and more and wanted to get competitive. I shadowed the Boys’ Latin (BL) varsity golf team in middle school, started playing for Pine Ridge’s interclub team, and participated in local tournaments. At both Boys’ Latin and Pine Ridge, I would meet individuals that had an enormous amount of influence on my life and where I am today. Those individuals were Mason Champion and Julieta Stack, also known as “Coach J.” They became my golf mentors and helped me become the golfer I aspired to be. Coach J showed me how fun it was to play golf and truly enjoy being out on the course making new friends. She is a huge inspiration for my style of teaching and without her introduction to golf, I don’t think I would be in the position I am in today. Golf became my favorite thing in the world to do because of how fun she made golf for me and I am forever grateful to her. Throughout my four years on the Boys’ Latin varsity golf team, as my
GOLF coach, Mason Champion taught me more lessons than I can think of while on the golf course. Under his guidance, I learned what it truly meant to have integrity, honor, and respect for others. From my time spent with him and my teammates, I learned how to become a leader and more importantly, a good friend.
75th Annual Jimmy Flattery Tournament Champion—2011
I quickly went from shooting 130 to mid-70s in about a year and a half of playing. I became a top contender for local junior golf competitions and was crowned Player of the Year for the Junior Tour of Maryland in 2011. As my skills grew, I knew I wanted to pursue golf in college and remembered the BL golf team went on a trip to Penn
State to visit their Golf Management program back in 2009. At the time, that trip was cool, but I never thought I would actually pursue golf as a career. A couple of years later, I ended up attending Penn State for their Golf Management program. I spent my summers interning at some of the best clubs in the country, including BCC, in 2016 and 2017, where I grew as a Golf Professional. I graduated from Penn State as a PGA Professional in 2017 and was soon hired by Somerset Hills’s Head Professional, Daniel Joseph, to lead their junior program. It was at Somerset Hills that my love for teaching golf evolved. I took everything I learned from all of the members I caddied for, Golf Professionals I learned from, and friendships created to make that program the very best I could. My life became teaching golf and growing the future golfers of this country, and I could not be more grateful to golf to be where I am today. After two seasons spent at Somerset Hills leading their junior program, my golf journey came full circle when I was offered to lead the junior program at the club where my entire golf journey began— Baltimore Country Club.
Baltimore Country Club Junior Club Championship—2021
I am proud to represent BCC today as our Junior Golf Director and I would not be here today if it was not for my days of caddying here. To now come full circle and be the one to teach those lessons taught to me during my caddying days to our juniors is one of the greatest joys I have on this earth. This place is special and this sport is even more special to me. It has shaped my life only for the best and I will forever be grateful for the people who have been a part of it. Golf has a special something about it that connects us all in different ways and I cannot thank golf enough for changing my life. ◆

GROUNDS
GREENKEEPER'S UPDATE Hurricanes Henri and Ida were not what our courses needed in late August and early September. Through mid-September, over eight inches of rain saturated the property. Thankfully we only had minor damage from wind and severe thunderstorms, unlike other parts of the State. Unfortunately, the combination of heavy rain and high temperatures caused a great deal of stress to the playing areas. Under those weather conditions, there is little to no rooting structure. Under bright sunny days, the plant goes under moisture stress and begins to wilt or turn blue or yellow. The only way to keep the plant from dying is to apply light amounts of water multiple times a day. It’s very discouraging to apply water to an already saturated and wet soil, regardless of how light, but it’s necessary for the grass to survive. Unfortunately, the playing surfaces are at their absolute weakest point when activity at the Club remains exceptionally high. The 007 bentgrass will regenerate new roots with favorable weather, but as you can see by the photo, they are currently relatively shallow 1/8 to 1/4 inch. With days getting shorter, the cooler nights and warm days will hasten recovery to allow the rooting structure to recover. Spots in certain fairways will be reseeded or sodded, and where necessary, carts have been restricted from the fairways to enable the seed to germinate and establish. With little to no rooting structure, we need your help. When operating a golf cart, please use caution applying brakes and making sharp turns on the fairways to reduce damage. We appreciate your patience following the work that was completed on the Driving Range tees and fairway. We are pleased with the performance of the IronCutter bermudagrass to date and the contrast between the bermudagrass in the field and the Innovation zoysiagrass target greens at the back of the range. As cold weather arrives, we will be overseeding perennial ryegrass on the range tees for improved playability. However, once the grass stops growing and recovery from divots becomes non-existent, all play will be from the all-weather mats on both ends of the range. The range field will become dormant or brown, and the zoysia targets will be painted green with a green pigment that is safe on the grass and provide excellent definition throughout the winter months.
We will be installing trees and landscaping on the left of the range tee near the Golf House to provide separation between the range and first tee on the West. Director of Horticulture Cathy Wagner and her team will also be installing additional landscaping in the corner as you leave the cart staging area and head to the first tee. These plantings were based on the recommendation of Golf Architect Keith Foster. We also appreciate your patience as we regrassed a number of tees on the West Course to bermudagrass. These include: #1 blue/white, #2 blue, #8 blue, #9 white, red/gold green, #10 green, #11 blue, green, #13 blue, white, red/gold, #14 green, #15 blue, white, green, #16, #17 red/gold, green, #18 gold. These tees were overseeded with perennial ryegrass. We look forward to utilizing a two grass system on these and the other tees converted to bermudagrass in the past. Finally, it’s no secret that our industry has been subject to challenges finding and retaining staff to maintain the type of conditions you have come to expect on the courses and grounds. Staffing challenges have forced us to reduce the level of maintenance on tasks which include, but are not limited to, the following: • Fairway dew dragging • Bunker raking and maintenance • Mowing frequency, course grooming (trimming grass around trees, trimming grass around sprinkler heads, mowing and maintenance of tall grass/native areas), and maintenance of mulch, pine straw, and beds on both courses and grounds • The mowing of East Course walk paths is being eliminated for the remainder of the season • Fairway divot filling will be limited along with maintenance of the Driving Range We look forward to having great weather this fall and seeing you at the Club. ◆
