ACL PREVENTATIVE TRAINING PROGRAM

Sports injuries fall into two categories: acute and overuse. Acute injuries happen suddenly, often due to a misstep or collision, and include sprains, ACL tears, and fractures. Overuse injuries develop gradually from repetitive motions that strain the body over time. Proper technique and conditioning are key to preventing both types of injuries—especially for teens. Girls, in particular, are at greater risk of ACL tears during certain phases of their menstrual cycle, making prevention strategies even more important.

OF THE MONTH

With Jessica Taylorson, Personal Coach

THE GORILLA ROW

A gorilla row is a strength training exercise that’s a variation of the bent-over row. It’s typically done with two kettlebells or dumbbells.

▶ Place two kettlebells (or dumbbells) on the floor, shoulder-width apart.

▶ Stand with feet about hip- to shoulderwidth apart, hinge at the hips, and grab the handles so your torso is leaning forward about 45°. Your back should stay flat and core engaged—similar to the setup for a Romanian deadlift.

BENEFITS:

1. Strengthens rotation

2. Strengthens upper back muscles

3. Isometric contraction of lower body

4. Helps improve posture

CURTAIN CALL

LGA Member-Guest & MGA Five Farms Cup

As summer came to a close, members gathered for two marquee tournaments that served as the perfect seasonal send-off: the LGA 18-Hole Member-Guest, showcasing camaraderie and competition among our women golfers, and the inaugural MGA Five Farms Cup, which kicked off a new tradition for our men’s program. Both events highlighted the spirit of the game and the fellowship of our community, setting the stage as we transition into an exciting fall season. Ahead, members can look forward to more competition with the Club Championships, Member-Member tournaments for both the MGA and LGA, and more.

LGA 18-HOLE MEMBER-GUEST

September 10, 2025

57 women came together for the annual LGA 18-Hole MemberGuest on the East Course. Despite the rainy weather, the event carried on with enthusiasm, showcasing the resilience and spirit of all those who participated. While the conditions added an extra challenge, the day was still filled with great golf, camaraderie, and the kind of connections that make this event a favorite each year.

A sincere thank you to Tournament Chair Rebecca Krimski and everyone who joined us for this memorable event.

MGA FIVE FARMS CUP

September 18 & 19, 2025

The inaugural Five Farms Cup is officially in the books, marking a tremendous start to what promises to be a lasting tradition. We’re already looking forward to next year and many more Five Farms Cups to come.

After 36 holes of regulation play—plus two playoff holes in the shootout—the first-ever Five Farms Cup Champions were crowned: Michael Mulieri and Michael Sheridan. We also congratulate the inaugural Senior Division Champions Mark Huston and Bob Wineholt.

THE CADDIE CORNER

Building Leaders on the Course & Beyond

At the time I am writing this article, we just finished our summer season of golf and caddying, and what an exciting summer it was. So many things are happening with the Caddie Program— not just here at Baltimore Country Club, but at area clubs in the community, as well as nationally at the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club.

As part of our Youth Caddie Program, we offer the Youth Caddie Speaker Series for our high school and middle school caddies, including First Tee Caddie Squad members. In July, WGA Director and BCC member Mark Kenyon led a class on public speaking. It was an excellent seminar, and I believe he won a bet with his wife about whether he could hold all the students’ attention for more than 40 minutes. Several youth caddies even gave quick speeches about what they learned.

awarded both a Gross and a Net Champion. The winners were Mike Crowley, who took the gross title with a score of 68 on our Championship East Course, and Marcus Bailey, who won the net award in a two-hole playoff.

The championship is named in honor of Joe Hamilton. Joe started caddying here at BCC in 1992 and continued until 2019. After retiring, he became the friendly face greeting golfers in his concierge role. Joe was deeply touched that we named our newest event after him, but I couldn’t think of a better person given his dedication to the Caddie Program.

Our fourth annual Member-Caddie event was held on a gorgeous day, where 20 members and 20 caddies competed. Non-playing caddies forecaddied for each group. It was an 18-hole competition followed by a cookout on the East Lawn. Congratulations to Overall Net Champions Michael Clark and Ethan Coleman and Overall Gross Champions John Burton and Nick Cannon Again, a great day was had by all.

In May, our seminar focused on careers in healthcare, and I want to thank Dr. Brenda Jews for coordinating that informative evening with professionals from various fields. For our September series, our own Kent Johnson spoke to our student caddies about leadership.

This year, we held the inaugural Hamilton Cup Individual Stroke Play Championship for our caddies. They participated in a one-day event; those not competing served as caddies for our playing caddies. It was a fantastic day of competition, where we

Our Youth Caddie Speaker Series featured Mark Kenyon on public speaking and Kent Johnson on leadership—two inspiring sessions that helped our caddies grow on and off the course.

As mentioned earlier, the Youth Caddie Programs at the Country Club of Maryland (CCMD) and Green Spring Valley Hunt Club (GSVHC) continue to grow thanks to many efforts. We’re grateful to the Head Golf Professionals at both facilities, Mike Healy (CCMD) and Mike Adkins (GSVHC), as well as their memberships, for welcoming youth caddies. We also thank Matt Bassler and Mike O’Neil for their work, since the caddies at both facilities are part of the First Tee Caddie Squad initiative that began this past winter with classroom and on-course training.

Finally, I hope everyone had the opportunity to attend the BMW Championship in August at Caves Valley. It was another thrilling finish. Despite the warm temperatures, fans showed up in large numbers, and I believe record crowds attended throughout the week. If you were there, I hope you saw the First Tee at the 9th green selling snowballs. The snowballs were incredible, and you might have recognized some familiar faces—our caddies from the First Tee and Evans Scholars ran the stand. You also likely saw Evans Scholars caddying in the Pro-Am, caddying for TOUR Players, serving as honorary observers, and engaging in various activities.

PGA TOUR professional Akshay Bhatia thrilled fans with a Hole in One on the 17th hole. His ace not only earned him the keys to a new BMW iX M70, but more importantly, funded a four-year Evans Scholarship valued at $125,000 in his name.

Pictured alongside him was our own BCC Evans Scholar Kendall Opheikens, a proud reminder of how this event continues to invest in the lives of young caddies. This marks BMW’s seventh Hole in One Scholarship, further underscoring the Championship’s lasting commitment to education and youth development.

I want to thank our Caddie Committee for their hard work and dedication this past season. More importantly, I appreciate how they encourage members to keep taking youth caddies and making a positive difference in their lives. I am fortunate to witness firsthand how each of them grows from the beginning to the end of the season, as well as from year to year. The life skills they are learning are invaluable and will benefit them into adulthood.

Sincerely,

Akshay Bhatia with 2022 BCC Evans Scholar Kendall Opheikens after his Hole in One earned a BMW iX M70 and funded a new Evans Scholarship.

FALL FROST & FOLIAGE

As fall weather moves in, temperatures can vary in different areas of the property depending on elevation. These photos, taken minutes apart last fall, show the temperature difference between the clubhouse at 51 degrees and the valley near the 10th green at 41 degrees.

As the sun rises, the cold air sinks, and that’s when frost can form. Typically, frost starts to appear in the latter half of October, but this depends on the weather. When frost pops up, it is important to keep off the frozen grass. Any traffic on frozen grass can result in damage to the plant that can last for weeks. Frost will delay maintenance, and as a result, delay tee times. Fall foliage is abundant across the property. This is a perfect time to get outside and enjoy the vibrant colors before the leaves

fall. The elm tree on Hole 14 on the East Course is a sight to behold. Its location north of the green is a perfect placement for this giant. Due to its location, this tree casts no shade on the green at any point of the year, which aids in maintaining a strong, healthy stand of fine turf. Also, note in the photo that the green is still in complete sun. This photo was taken on November 5, 2024, near the time when the sun is at its lowest point in the sky. This is a great example of striking a balance between shade and fine turf.

Lastly, as the leaves begin to fall, they can be a nuisance on greens. We will again place electric blowers on the edges of greens for those blustery days when leaves constantly cover the greens.

MEET DREW BARNETT, DIRECTOR OF AGRONOMY

Drew spent the last 12 years as Golf Course Superintendent at Knollwood Club in Lake Forest, Illinois, forty minutes north of Chicago. Originally from Reading, Pennsylvania, he is thrilled to return to the East Coast to be closer to family.

Drew’s previous experience includes four years as Golf Course Superintendent at Philadelphia Cricket Club and two years as Assistant Superintendent at Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas, California. At Philadelphia Cricket Club, he assisted Keith Foster in the restoration of the A.W. Tillinghast designed Wissahickon course and

completed the renovation of the St. Martins golf course. Since 2014, Drew has excelled in his role as Superintendent at Knollwood Club, providing firm and fast conditions for members and guests. GET

WADE JOHNSTONE

DIRECTOR OF SQUASH

I grew up in Western Australia and began playing squash around the age of five. I moved out of my parents' house at 18 and relocated across the country to Melbourne, where I was offered a squash scholarship at the Victorian Institute of Sport. I got a job as an office administrator at the Victorian Squash Federation to support myself, and I also did some squash coaching on the side.

I traveled around the world playing squash for about nine months before returning to Australia. I then started looking for a coaching job in the U.S. to have better access to squash tournaments, knowing I wanted to coach after my professional playing career. In 2006, I was offered a position at Meadow Mill Athletic Club in Baltimore and have been living in Baltimore ever since. I’ve been at BCC for 11 years.

I hold the following certifications as a Squash Professional Coach: Level 3 US Squash Coach (highest certification), Level 2 Australian Elite Squash Coach (highest certification), US Squash Certified Squash Clinician (teaching coaches how to coach), PTR Certified Tennis, Paddle, and Pickleball Coach, NASM Certified Personal

Trainer. I have also worked with former World No. 1s such as John White, David Palmer, and Sarah Fitz-Gerald, among others.

I have been fortunate to achieve some milestones in squash, including reaching No. 2 on the Professional Squash Tour (PST) rankings. I was a finalist at the 2013 World Championships in Detroit and also at the 2013 Bottini Fuel World Open in New York. During my time on the professional circuit, I achieved a world ranking of 65 with the Professional Squash Association (PSA), all while coaching full-time. I am also the 2025 40+ US Squash National Singles and Doubles Champion, as well as the current (2025) and former Maryland State Champion.

Off the squash court, my wife Heather is an Acupuncturist and works part-time at BCC, and I have a seven-year-old son, Jaxon. I love Honey Graham ice cream and chocolate, as well as video games, Australian Rules Football, and just about any candy.
