SPORTS UNIFORM / HISTORY
OUR SPORT UNIFORM HISTORY At Melbourne Grammar School, sport is an unwavering part of who we are. The first recorded game of Australian Rules Football was played between Melbourne Grammar and Scotch College, and the annual match-up, now known as the Cordner-Eggleston Cup, has become one of the longest-running school football fixtures in the world. When our students compete with pride in their navy-blue uniforms, they carry 168 years of sporting excellence with them. This year we are introducing a new range of competition sportswear for Melbourne Grammar School athletes. In an ambitious APS environment, we strive to remain competitive at the elite level while providing a sports program that is enjoyable for all, with a uniform that equips students to perform at their best.
The range has been designed with young athletes in mind, making it practical, functional, flexible, and durable. A contemporary expression of our heritage; it creates a consistent yet distinctly Melbourne Grammar look across the breadth of sports our students play today. As the range is rolled out to students over the coming months, our legacy of sporting excellence continues.

FIRSTS TEAMS UNIFORMS Reflecting the significance of representing the School at this level, select sports now have a designated Firsts competition uniform. These uniforms retain the red socks, and include new items emblazoned with a gold Firsts mitre.

THE STORY BEHIND THE NEW SPORTS UNIFORMS This year, Melbourne Grammar athletes took to the sporting stage with a brand-new look. Behind the scenes, it was a years-long journey to bring it to life. From archival research to design, manufacturing, and now its implementation, every aspect of the new sports uniform has been considered with care. For Director of Community Relations Kate Barnett, who has seen this project through from its inception, one of the most exciting elements of the new sports uniform is the sun protection it offers. “Every uniform in the new range incorporates fabrics rated SPF50+,” she says. “Knowing that students would be competing under the harsh Australian sun, we lent on advice from Cancer Council and leading dermatologists to inform many of our fabric and design choices.” Where possible, upper garments are offered in a long sleeve variety, and many include a functional collar. Some items, such as the long sleeve knit, are transferrable across sports, giving students the option to layer up while staying cool.

“Being able to adopt so many of their recommendations and go above and beyond the APS requirements for sun protection can be a source of real pride for us,” she says.
The School has embraced opportunities where possible to partner with local suppliers such as Interknit in Ballarat, who are producing the new line of knitwear.
Sustainability and sustainable practices have been equally important to the process.
Kate says that from the outset, it was important that the School partnered with suppliers who aligned with our values.
Clever design choices mean that in many cases, items in the new line can be re-worn across multiple sports. For old garments, an extended transition period means that there’s time for students to grow out of their old uniforms and into the new ones. In the meantime, students can continue to wear their old items for training. “We are really proud of the creative solutions we’ve been able to find to give the old uniforms an extended or second life,” Kate says. “Where items can’t be repurposed, we’ve turned to recycling and upcycling initiatives.”
“Through this, we have been able to ethically and sustainably source highquality garments that we knew would be functional, durable, and practical for growing athletes,” she says. At every stage, the community has been central to the process; from tapping into the insights of the students, parents, and alumni to the wonderful ongoing work of FOG Shop volunteers. “We can feel bolstered knowing many ways this uniform has been shaped for, and by, the Melbourne Grammar community, and underpinned by the values we share,” Kate says.

UNIFORM TRANSITION The Melbourne Grammar School sports uniform will undergo a transition period from 2026 to 2028. During this time, a combination of existing and new uniforms will be worn. By 2028, all iterations of the new sports uniform will be compulsory across the School. In March 2026, the Winter range of competition uniforms was launched, and in September, the Spring/Summer range will become available. These tables summarise the rollout periods for all seasons.

The Physical Education uniform has been designed for all students from Prep – Year 12. It comprises a range of dynamic TRACKPANT items that offer choice and comfort for young athletes. The Physical Education uniform is initially optional, but will be compulsory for all students from Prep – Year 12 from 2028. Many students who compete at a non-Firsts level will also do so in the Physical Education uniform.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT THE NEW SPORTS UNIFORM? The new sports uniform range has been designed for high performance sport, with functionality, comfort, and durability in mind. Using technical materials and sustainable fabrics, the range is antimicrobial, moisture-wicking, and features SPF50+ protection for young athletes. This update brings a consistent Melbourne Grammar look and feel to the APS competition, and pays homage to the School’s proud history of sporting excellence.
IS THE NEW SPORTS UNIFORM COMPULSORY? Students in Firsts teams will be required to wear the new Firsts uniform from the start of the 2026/2027 Spring/Summer season. The new sports uniform will be initially optional for students in other teams. For more information, view the transition guidelines on page 6.
HOW MUCH WILL THE NEW UNIFORMS COST? Pricing information is available through the Uniform Shop.

WHEN WILL THE SPRING/ SUMMER UNIFORM ITEMS BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE? Most Spring/Summer sports uniform items will be available for purchase from 28 September in the South Yarra uniform shop. The Rowing uniform will be available for purchase from later this year, and the Cycling uniform from early next. The Physical Education uniform will be available for purchase in January 2027. It will be initially optional, then compulsory for all students from Prep – Year 12 from 2028.
CAN STUDENTS CHOOSE THE NUMBER DISPLAYED ON THEIR GARMENTS? Jersey numbers are allocated randomly, as they are pre-printed onto the garments at the time of production.
WHAT DO I DO WITH MY CHILD’S EXISTING SPORTS UNIFORMS? We recommend keeping your child’s existing sports uniform. All students can continue to wear their existing sports uniforms during training and warm up ongoing. The existing sports uniform can also be worn on game days during the 2026/2027 Spring/Summer season (for those not in Firsts teams). Please refer to the transition guidelines on page 6 for more information.
ARE THE UNIFORMS THE SAME BETWEEN CAMPUSES? Yes! The sports uniform has been designed for all students across Grimwade House, Wadhurst and Senior School.
